Transcript of The Luther Rose
Martin Luther, German priest and theologian, helped start the Protestant Reformation in the early
16th century. He made a significant impact on the Reformation with his Ninety-Five Theses (31
October 1517), his translation of the New Testament into German (1521 – 1522), his hymns
(including A Mighty Fortress is Our God, between 1527 and 1529) and his powerful preaching of
the Word of God.
John Frederick I, Elector of Saxony and head of the Protestant Confederation of Germany,
commissioned a seal for Martin Luther in 1530. Luther wrote a letter to the designer, Lazarus
Spengler, requesting the following symbols and colors for his seal:
The Cross – Black
To remind us of the Crucified One that saved us and the pain He suffered.
“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:10
The Heart – Red
In remembrance of the love of Christ.
“For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written,
The just shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17
The Rose – White
To show that faith yields joy, peace and comfort.
“His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow.” Matthew 28:3
The Background – Blue
To remind us of the heavenly joys to come.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27
The Outer Ring – Gold
To signify that heaven is more precious than all earthly treasures and endures forever.
“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they
the prophets which were before you.” Matthew 5:10, 12
