THE LUNCH BOX

Brief

The film, set in Mumbai, revolves around a mistaken delivery by the Dabbawalas (lunchbox service) of Mumbai, which leads to a relationship between Saajan, a lonely widower close to retirement, and Ila, an unhappy housewife, as they start exchanging notes through the daily lunchbox.

Plot

Saajan (Irrfan Khan) is a lonely accountant about to retire from his job.

Ila (Nimrat Kaur) is a young wife seeking her husband's attention, looking for ways to put romance back in her marriage, and tries to cook her way to her husband's heart.

Her aunt who lives in the apartment above her gives her advice on cooking and marriage through shouted instructions. 

Through a rare mixup of the famous “dabbawalas" (a complicated system that picks up and delivers lunches from restaurants or homes to people at work) of Mumbai , the lunchbox with the delicious food Ila prepared for her husband instead gets delivered to Saajan. 

 When the lunch box is delivered back to Ila empty, she is happy, thinking her husband had enjoyed her cooking.

When at night Ila’s husband comes home and she ask her that how was the lunch, her husband says that it was good as daily.

  Realizing the mistake of the delivery, she writes a note

to the recipient of her lunch thanking him for enjoying the food and sends him her husband's favorite meal the following day.

Saajan (Irrfan Khan)

Irrfan khan had done a great work in movie as compare to the other movies like he do not talk much in the movie Lunch Box wants to keep himself lonely by not been interfering in other kind of things keeping himself bussy , etc.

Irrfan Khan liked the script of the film and the concept of his character, not speaking much but talking through notes.

As we can compare with the other movies like Life of Pie, Slumdog Millionaire, etc. The character he plays or the director says him to act like that he at a sudden makes himself so comfortable that the role he plays is fully good.

Irrfan khan have now become so famous world wide that the directors from Hollywood too wants him to take in his/her movie.

After the grand success of the movie The Lunch Box Irrfan khan became more famous.

If we compare the role of Irrfan khan in the movie ‘Life in a METRO’ and Sunday we will see that one side irrfan khan is serious and the other is an comedian.

Ritesh Batra (Director)

Ritesh Batra, who had made short films, The Morning Ritual, Gareeb Nawaz ki Taxi and Cafe Regular, Cairo.

He started researching for a documentary on the famous Lunch box delivery system in Mumbai.

But after spending a week with them in Mumbai in 2007, he got to know many interesting stories they would hear while waiting outside the apartments. The character played of IIa by Nimrat Kaur, six months’ prior to the shooting , and the character played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui was more further developed and improvised during the time of shoot.

 He got to know of many interesting personal stories they would overhear while waiting outside an apartment. This idea gave birth to the idea of the film, and instead of making the documentary he began writing a film script.

 After seeing Batra's short film and a couple of meetings he agreed to act in the film. Batra wanted to work with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, another principal character of the film, for a long time.

For the female lead, auditions were conducted, wherein Nimrat Kaur was selected. Nimrat Kaur had extensive experience at the Mumbai theatre and worked in films like Peddlers. Some of the dabbawalas who the director befriended while researching for the film, also have been cast in minor roles.

Message

The message movie gave is that how the common man lives in Mumbai the metro city very bussy with its own.

The employee who is alone and how spends the life all alone when no one is with him.

A single man cannot work or can say that every one in the life needs one life partner so that life becomes easy and simple.

If one lives like this all alone life time will be bored with his life.

Ritesh has discribed the movie so simple that there is Drama, Romance both in the movie it’s a different type of movie from others.

The movie was show us the life of Mumbai citizens and the dabbawalas who daily carry the food for the people who are working in the office.
