Annabel WhiteheadAnnabel WhiteheadAnnabel WhiteheadAnnabel Whitehead LTC ChairmanLTC ChairmanLTC ChairmanLTC Chairman
It’s a bit late to be saying happy new year but as its what I’d said when
we were first getting the Newsletter out in January, I’ll say it now… Happy
New Year to everyone! I think that the 2011 Show was a success.
Although the numbers were down I feel we can attribute that to an earlier
than usual date and I have every reason to believe that the 2012
Show…being held in Pewsey, so practically on my doorstep…is going to
draw in a large group. It is a vital part of the whole Club to get us all
together. So Pewsey it is and Leslee will be recruiting, under Pamela’s
experienced outline, for Show ‘committee’ members to make it all come
together in a big way!
It had become clear that Baginton was not suitable long-term and as we
started investigating we found, in a vote, that almost everyone preferred
a site in the south. Other strong contenders were The Millenium Hall at
Horton-cum-Studley just outside of Oxford and at Philip and Johnny’s
place near to Eydon, which they generously offered. And if Pewsey
doesn’t seem to suit we will make a shift to another location. The main
thing is that we all come together in support of the Show and our lovely
Lucas Terriers.
I am sure that all of you saw the piece in Country Life and in some of the
newspapers about the dearth of Sealyham puppies. Well, without
Sealyhams there can be no Lucus’ so it is a warning to keep up with our
breeding programme. I hope that we can all make breeding an
objective for 2012.
Look forward to seeing you in Pewsey on September 30th…

A delayed newsletter, the Show, contributors, an LTC
directory, and breeding…
I know that all of you have been rushing to the
letterbox for days now, if not weeks, just hoping that
the new Newsletter would be enclosed. No doubt
there’s been tremendous disappointment as the
post was rifled through, with only the appearance
of adverts, bills or postcards from gap-year children
in need of funds. And so, here it is…the really
important stuff in life…our Lucas Terriers!
Apols to all for the delay but it seemed best to hold
off until we had some idea of where the Show was
headed and indeed we do! AND…..
Pewsey in Wiltshire it is!
My Harry and Freya enjoying a romp
on a snowy day in Oxfordshire!
The Show
As Annabel said other options following the various surveys we undertook included
Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire. However it made sense to try Pewsey this year…its
near to Annabel’s as well as Jo Rodwell’s and as this is Annabel’s last year as
Chairman why not make it dead-easy for the delivering of all those rosettes! And
should anyone have further ideas about Show locations for the future, please speak
up! This might be a moveable feast!
The important thing is to contribute ‘your thoughts’ but more importantly ‘your
presence’. This should be a grand Show!
The judge for 2012 will be announced in the next newsletter as will Kevin’s summary of
the 2011 Show which somehow slipped out of his computer and into the ether! Don’t
we all know the horror of that!
HANDS UP…As Pamela is passing on Show organization, I’m keen to get some of you
interested in undertaking an activity or two. Could you let me know if you might help?
And if so, I’ll forward the list of tasks and you can select one, or some, that suits you.
5
HANDS UP…Again this year, are there any bakers out there for cakes, biscuits (or
cookies as I say!), cupcakes and such to be available at the Show for tea-time?
Heaps of thanks to Pamela for stepping in and sorting out the Show in 2010 and 2011.
It was a process getting used to Jumbo not being around and Pamela’s organization
made the transition easier for all. Thanks as well for her survey which accompanied
the last newsletter and thanks to you for your responses which helped us to make a
decision on the location.
Contributors
Thanks to all who have supplied stories, pictures, articles. I’ve received so many
compliments about the Newsletter and it is thanks to all of you for contributing. This
includes Annabel’s letter each issue and the wealth of knowledge imparted by
Pamela as well as the updates from Sue.
From LTC members Norman Norrington and Spike take the cake (and the biscuit) for
always contributing to the Newsletter. Thank you both!
I hope that more of you will join in. I can’t bear the prospect of there being a lot of
dull dogs out there with no interesting story, no bone to pick or fun picture to show and
tell. So, don’t be a ‘dull dog’…send me something!
LTC Directory
I’m keen to organize a region-by-region directory of services…kennels, vets, food,
hotels that take dogs, etc so if you have any tips, please forward them. I’d like to
compile something by the September Show.
Breeding
In a word, keep it up!
Secretary’s Notes
And in this issue Pamela has provided us all sorts of news…some very very sad…and
she has given us a wealth of information on health and breeding issues as well as
supplying us with a very detailed analysis of her survey in the search for a new show
site. There is also an update on the legacy left by Jumbo.
USA News from the USA is that they are putting together a Lucas Terrier calendar! Also, if you
would like an electronic copy of their Newsletter, do let me know and I will forward your details
to Laurie Crouch.

MEMBERS ONLY
At the Show I was asked if a Members Only section could be put on the Lucas Terrier
Club website. I have done this. In this area there will be back copies of newsletters,
the paperwork to register puppies, a blank pedigree form, a whelping chart so that
you can work out when puppies would be due, an application to be downloaded by
breeders for new puppy owners to join the Club, details of all the Lucas terriers
registered with the Club to date, IVDD radiograph results, PLL test results and various
other bits and pieces will be added as time goes on. The User Name to enter this part
of the site is LTCmember and the Password is Ilmer. The password will change annually.
SHOW SURVEY
As you know, I placed a survey on Survey Monkey asking questions regarding the
Show. The results are as follows:
42 people completed the survey. This was just over one-third of the membership.
With regards to location, the most popular area was South (Buckinghamshire,
Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Greater London, Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey,
Hampshire) with 24 people making this their first choice. Other areas voted for were
East (Lincolnshire, Rutland, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire,
Bedfordshire) with 6 votes; North of England (Northumberland, Cumbria, Tyne & Wear,
County Durham, North Yorkshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Greater Manchester) with 2
votes; Midlands (Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, West
Midlands, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire) with 4 votes; South West
(Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall) with 2 votes; Welsh Border and West Country
(Cheshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire) with 4 votes. I
asked people to score areas 1 through 6 in case there was a tie but the South was, as
you can see, the runaway winner.
People were then asked if they would be prepared to assist in the running of the show.
19 people said that they were prepared to assist, however, of that number 7 identified
tasks they were prepared to undertake but then failed to provide contact details, so I
have not included them in the following breakdown.
The tasks listed were as follows
1) Book a hall in your chosen area
2) Set up the hall on the day (tables/chairs/judging area etc)
3) Book caterers
4) Clear hall after the Show
5) Take entries prior to the Show and type catalogue
7
6) Organise printing of catalogue
7) Deliver and distribute catalogues to exhibitors on the day
8) Order and deliver trophies on the day
9) Order and deliver rosettes, badges and show numbers on the day
10) Distribute show numbers to exhibitors on the day
8 people are prepared to carry out task 1) and 5 of them chose the South as their first
choice of location whilst it was 2nd choice for the remaining 3.
10 people are prepared to carry out task 2) and 6 of them chose the South as their first
choice of location. One person said the South was 3rd choice and would only be
involved in the setting up if it was close to home. Of the remaining three the South was
their 2nd, 5th and 6th choice.
8 people are prepared to carry out task 3) and 6 of them chose the South as their first
choice of location. One had the South as 5th choice and for the other it was 6th.
9 people are prepared to carry out task 4). 5 of them chose the South as their first
choice of location. Two had the South as 2nd choice and the other two put it 3rd and
6th.
2 people said that they are prepared to carry out task 5). Both of these people both
had South as a 2nd in their location choice.
3 people are prepared to carry out task 6). For one South is first choice, for the other
two it is one person’s 2nd choice and 6th choice for the other.
5 people are prepared to carry out task 7). For 3 of them the South is their first choice
of location and for the other 2 it is 2nd choice.
2 people are prepared to carry out task 8). For one the South is their first choice of
location and for the other it is their 2nd choice.
2 people are prepared to carry out task 9). For one the South is their first choice of
location and for the other it is their 2nd choice.
4 people are prepared to carry out task 10). For 2 the South is their first choice and for
2 it is their 2nd choice.
One person said she was prepared to call out the entries, an extra duty not on the list
above. The South would be her 1st choice of location. Another person has offered
sponsorship and yet another said she was prepared to help but was not specific, only
to say that she did not want to be in charge and the South is her preferred location.
So, it would appear that there are people in the preferred area who are prepared to
carry out the required tasks to ensure that the show goes ahead. Some people who
volunteered didn’t have the South as a first choice but there should be enough
people who did to pick up the jobs that need to be done. I have passed on the details
of those who are prepared to help to Leslee to co-ordinate and some of them
sourced halls in various parts of the south where the Show could be moved to.
There is, of course, a budget, and I would not expect costs to be astronomically higher
in the South than they have been over the last couple of years in the Midlands ~ and
in some cases, for example rosettes and trophies, there would be no need to change
the company currently being used. We were very fortunate to have money in the
8
bank before Jumbo died and she left a legacy to the Club which has meant we can
afford to have a show complete with lunch but only because we have been careful
with what we have, and that is a situation that will continue, according to the
Treasurer! I can speak to those who are allocated tasks about what show costs have
been in the past to ensure they negotiate similar prices.
JUMBO’S LEGACY
I mention above that Jumbo left a legacy to the Lucas Terrier Club; there were some
issues to be cleared up before the full amount we were to receive would be known, so
Annabel and I felt that until the situation was absolutely clear we should not discuss it.
We did receive half of the money, £10,000, shortly after Jumbo died but it is only now
(September 2011) that the other half has been released, with 0.3% interest, giving us a
further £10,026.55 . This money will be a very welcome boost and will ensure that the
Club and the Show can continue running for a good few years to come.
STANDING ORDER FOR CLUB SUBSCRIPTION
Members have been asking if they could pay their Club subscription by Standing
Order. This is possible and the information required to do so is provided below.
However, payment for the classes at the Show will need to be made separately
annually by cheque.
Please ask your bank to set up the Standing Order to be paid on 1st of September
each year.

WHAT IS IT?
This photograph appeared on Facebook
and some people thought it was a Lucas –
with THOSE ears, I don’t think so! Rather on
the large side too. It is, in fact, the result of
an accidental mating between an
American Cocker Spaniel and a
Sealyham. Made to look even stranger
with his weird walrus-like hair-do!

MONDAY TO FRIDAY MAN
Earlier this year it was lovely to hear from Alice Peterson, who has one of Jumbo’s
puppies, Darcy (Frost’s Golden Miller). When a teenager Alice had pinned her hopes
on having a successful tennis playing career but
rheumatoid arthritis put paid to that dream when she
was 18 years old. Alice then took herself off in another
direction and is now a published author. Her latest
book, Monday To Friday Man was inspired by her
Lucas terrier and their walks in Ravenscourt Park in
London.
Even though the book is not the sort I would normally
read I fairly whizzed through it and found it both
entertaining and enjoyable.

I was sorry to receive a note from Gaynor Aylward letting me know that she had had
to have Thomas’ Black Eyed Susie put to sleep in August 2011. Susie developed a
tumour on her leg and within 10 weeks it was sufficiently serious that Gaynor had to let
her go. Susie was one of four puppies from a mating of Frost’s Lostmelicence Samson
and Thomas’ Coffee Bean, born in April 1998, and bred by Cathy Thomas. She had
one litter at the end of 1999, sired by Frost’s Lostmelicence Samson. After that she was
placed with Gaynor and from then on we saw them every year together at the Lucas
Terrier Club Show. It was obvious they had a very close relationship. Gaynor says that
Susie was her world and she has some lovely memories. Gaynor has been unwell also
and is undergoing treatment. Best wishes to you for your own recovery, Gaynor, and
sympathy for the loss of Susie.
Also, Linda Finger in Houston, Texas passed away on 1st September 2011. Linda owned
two Lucas terriers, Beau, Thomas’ Beau Regard, bred by Cathy Thomas and Zoe,
Townsend’s Houston Calling, bred by the late Sally Townsend. Linda was a well known
patroness of the arts in Houston and a dedicated supporter of medical research,
establishing with her late husband the Linda and Ronny Finger Research Centre for ALS
and the Research Centre for Lupus. Linda bred one litter from Zoe, sired by Peat’s
Willow, owned by Caroline Farb, a friend and neighbour of Linda’s in Houston.
10
There was very sad news from Anita Freter in South Africa at the end of October that
Chillingworth’s Lillie Langtry had died in a dreadful accident. Lillie drowned in the
Freters’ swimming pool when they think she was trying to drink water from the pool
cover and fell in and under the cover. John and Anita are naturally devastated as she
was a dear dog and very special to them. Leo, their other Lucas terrier, misses her too.
Such an awful tragedy.
HEALTH ISSUESHEALTH ISSUESHEALTH ISSUESHEALTH ISSUES
SPINES
This is a subject I have said very little about in recent newsletters. The reason being that
the majority of those who are breeding have been carrying out radiographs and
breeding from dogs that are clear of any signs of spinal calcification, thus we have
had almost no instances of IVDD related problems for some time (it seems Teddy,
mentioned elsewhere, had a twist, or fall, and his was not a regular IVDD problem). If
you are involved in breeding and have not had your dog radiographed (and
checked for PLL if there is Sealyham close up in the pedigree), you are doing the
breed you claim to love a grave disservice.
The reason I am mentioning spines again now is because I was interested to see in the
Journal of Heredity issue for September – October 2011 details of a research paper on
disc calcification in Dachshunds (the prime contender for research for obvious
reasons). The paper is entitled ‘Genome-Wide Association Study in Dachshund:
Identification of a Major Locus Affecting Intervertebral Disc Calcification’. There were 8
co-authors, so I am not going to list them all.
The Abstract says ‘Intervertebral disc calcification and herniation commonly affects
Dachshund where the predisposition is caused by an early onset degenerative
process resulting in disc calcification. A continuous spectrum of disc degeneration is
seen within and among dog breeds, suggesting a multifactorial etiology. The number
of calcified discs at 2 years of age determined by a radiographic evaluation is a good
indicator of the severity of disc degeneration and thus serves as a measure for the risk
of developing intervertebral disc herniation.
Disc herniation has long been a major health issue in the Danish Dachshund Club
(DDC) and a breeding program has been initiated in order to decrease the
occurrence of clinical disc herniation in the Dachshund population. The program is
based on a radiographic examination of all dogs at 24–42 month of age where the
number of calcified discs is determined. Since 2008, DDC has recommended that
Dachshunds with ≥5 calcified discs were excluded from breeding. This screening prior
to breeding has ensured a cohort of clinically well-characterized Dachshund allowing
collection of samples for genetic studies.’
This is very similar to the regime that I have recommended for Lucas terrier breeding
though the Dachshund Club one is applied much more stringently. This confirms for me
that this is the way forward for the time being and I do hope that those of you who
11
are, or intend, breeding will continue to have your studs and broods radiographed
before producing puppies.
In the Dachshund study GWA (this means Genome Wide Association) using the
Illumina CanineHD BeadChip identified a locus on chromosome 12 from 36.8 to 38.6
Mb with 36 markers reaching genome-wide significance (Pgenome = 0.00001–0.026). This
suggests that a major locus on chromosome 12 harbours genetic variations affecting
the development of intervertebral disc calcification in Dachshunds. Whilst the Lucas
may not have exactly the same genetic markers as the Dachshund it is very possible
that the spinal calcification and herniation in the Lucas is genetic through variation at
the same locus. In light of this discovery it will be interesting to see if we can tag onto
any DNA marker testing being developed. Ours would probably be the marker for
Sealyhams and I know at one time David Winsley of Davmar Sealyhams had been
involved in taking DNA samples for the development of a test and I have passed this
information on to him too.
If anyone is interested in reading the paper then contact me and I will send a link.
IVDD TESTING
Latest dogs to be tested for IVDD are Howell and Sue Rees’ Macfarlane’s Basil, in
Oxfordshire, he is available to suitable bitches and Langford’s Moja, owned by Simon
Smith and living in Brighton he is also available to suitable bitches.
AN ALTERNATIVE TO SURGERY
Theresa Banovic and Martin Pearce who own Lyndonbrook Teddy recorded this diary
of a back problem suffered by him earlier this year:
Thu Feb 17
Teddy was left in the car for a while and upon our return he seemed listless and in pain.
We are not sure that leaving him was the cause, but possible – he may have jumped
and twisted his spine.
Fri Feb 18
He was wincing when his sides were touched.
Sat Feb 19
His back legs started to drag. Visited Veterinary Practice. Vet thought there was a
neck problem, and mild infection. Injected with painkiller Bupracare. Prescribed
antibiotic Synulox and painkillers Rimadyl.
Sun Feb 20
No mobility in back legs. became incontinent. Visited Vet Hospital. They pinpointed a
prolapsed disc. Administered painkiller injection. They advised surgery (at Newmarket)
to be essential, the alternative being termination. We didn’t know what to do - the
cost of surgery (£6-7,000) was too inhibitive so we brought him home. Had to keep him
contained in a pen, as he still thought he was Superdog and capable of anything.
Mon Feb 21
Visited McTimoney Chiropractor, Frances Holt who said there was hope, with time,
complete rest and support for his back end, and subtle exercises to stimulate the back
legs. He received his first treatment.
12
Fri Feb 25
Visited Chiropractor again, pleased with progress. Recommended homeopathic
remedy Lathyrus 30
Sat Feb 26
In the evening noticed a reflex reaction to being touched in back leg, especially the
right. Chiropractor gave us Thallium to tide us over until Lathyrus arrives.
Sun Feb 27
Now putting some weight on his back legs by himself, and when walked with support
was moving back legs to and fro. Continues to be in good spirits. He tells us when
ablutions are pending. Seems to go through the motions of cocking his leg.
Mon Feb 28
Continued progress as above. Becoming very lively.
Tue Mar 1
Started Lathyrus 30. Started to support his own back legs. Continence returns.
Thu Mar 3
Progress good. Supporting his weight on back legs though wobbly and foot flexion still
weak, especially the left.
Fri Mar 4
Visit to Chiropractor. She is surprised at progress. Advises carefulness.
Sun Mar 6
Foot flexion improved. Cocking his leg now and raring to go.
Mon Mar 7
Stronger and livelier. Sleeping/resting quite a lot.
Fri Mar 11
Walking well, even running sometimes. Legs still wobbly when tired. Still quite sleepy.
Appetite has been good throughout the whole episode.
Sun Mar 20
One month from lowest point at Vet Hospital. Getting stronger. Running more. Sleeping
lots.
Mon Mar 27
Stopped Lathyrus. Running well. Energy good .Sleeping less.
August 29
5 months on he is much like he was before his prolapse. He still can’t jump like he used
to, but can do steep stairs now and probably will be able to jump like before in time.
Frances Holt is a McTimoney Animal Therapist in Essex. Her telephone number is 01371

PLL
Jo Rodwell had both Metcalfe’s Lola and Frost’s Sariska DNA tested for Primary Lens
Luxation (PLL) and the good news is that both of them have come back as being
clear of the condition. Unfortunately, Brunton’s Scotch Mist, a son of Jumbeeden
Guinness, has not been so fortunate, and is a carrier.
At the Show I was asked if I would repeat the information on the dogs that may
develop PLL to ensure that those of you who have, or bred, these dogs are aware of
the possibility of the condition being in your line – which you should be concerned
about after reading Kate Bolsover’s piece on the trials and tribulations she and poor
George have been through:

status that has sired PLL carriers:

It would be useful if the owners of the Lucas parents mentioned above could have
them tested and then that may lessen the necessity for the owners of the progeny to
have them done. That is to say, if the parent is clear of PLL then the offspring will also
be clear (known as obligate clear).
I will add results of testing as they are received to the members only area of the Lucas
Terrier Club website.
For information on how to go about having a dog tested for PLL, go to the Animal
Health Trust’s website. The test is done by buccal swab, basically wiping a small
sponge around inside the dog’s mouth, so does not require the assistance of a Vet. I
believe currently the cost is £40 per dog.

From Anita Freter in South AfricaFrom Anita Freter in South AfricaFrom Anita Freter in South AfricaFrom Anita Freter in South Africa………… Chillingworth's Lillie Langtry 2004 - 2011
Lillie was born on 28th February, 2004 in Hampshire, England. Her mother, Thomas' Lottie, was
considered by many in the know to be a perfect example of what Sir Jocelyn had wanted to
breed, a small tan and white terrier with plenty of hunting instinct. Lillie was one of a litter of 6
- something of a miracle in the world of the Lucas Terrier! It was Lottie's second litter. All the
puppies were tan and white, quite a change from today's tan -dominated dogs.
She grew up with her mother and half sister Lulu who was half Norfolk from Lottie's first
litter. When Lillie was ready to have her first litter several attempts were made to get her
mated. The "husband" of choice had been Colville's Luca, who was a fine type of dog, but he
was not so experienced in those days. Finally after a 400 round trip of the South of England
one Saturday she was finally mated to Frosts Friskie at Jumbo's house at Eydon. She produced
2 puppies, a dog, the now famous Chillingworth's Leo, and a bitch, Chillingworth's Lucy. Due to
our impending move to South Africa we decided to let the bitch go to someone who
promised to breed from her. Unfortunately things didn't work out and she was rehomed and
we lost contact with her.
On 28th July, 2007, Lillie and Leo arrived in their separate airline boxes at Cape Town
International Airport after a 12 hour flight from London. Lillie was always the sweetest dog and
adored small children. If she spotted one when she was out on a walk she have to go up to it
and wag her tail and then roll over on her back to have her tummy tickled. She loved the
occasional ride out on The Master's Toy Car when she would attract a great deal of attention
and people would photograph her. She never did any harm to anyone.
Most tragically she suffered a most untimely death when she drowned in our swimming pool
on 22nd October 2011. We shall never know how it happened, but she is now at rest in the
garden under a beautiful purple-flowering Heliotrope bush. I have to confess to going and
having a chat with her each day so she is still around us in spirit.
RIP Lillie

ASPECTS OF BREEDINGASPECTS OF BREEDINGASPECTS OF BREEDINGASPECTS OF BREEDING When to taWhen to taWhen to taWhen to take an inke an inke an inke an in----season bitch to the dogseason bitch to the dogseason bitch to the dogseason bitch to the dog
By Pamela HarrowBy Pamela HarrowBy Pamela HarrowBy Pamela Harrow
One of the most common questions I am asked with regards to breeding is when to
take the bitch to the dog. To be able to tell by observing your bitch takes experience
and it is easy to miss the optimum times. Jumbo had a bitch that was mated on the 4th
day of her season and I had one that was not interested in mating with a dog until the
20th day. These are extremes and it is true to say that standard normals will be ready to
be mated around the 10th to 12th day, but it is not a hard and fast rule.
In recent years a number of dog breeders I know have purchased Draminksi dog
ovulation detectors and report favourable outcomes. This machine indicates oestrus
by monitoring the changes in electrical resistance in vaginal mucous, thus determines
when the luteinising hormone that triggers ovulation has been released naturally by
the bitch and it is time to breed. The Draminski costs somewhere in the region of £300
new, though I have seen them in used but good, working condition for half that
amount on EBay. In fact, £300 is less than the cost of one puppy and for anyone who
has had multiple failures it might be worth investing in such a machine.
Another way of determining when a bitch is ready to be mated is to use a Premate
test which is done by a vet and they generally choose the company that will carry out
the blood testing. However, I recently received an e-mail from Fit and Fertile Ltd who
offer this service and the message says:
We are pleased to announce we are able to offer an in-house newly developed
analysing machine for Blood Progesterone levels to determine the optimum time for
mating your bitch, to help achieve the best results for your breeding programme.
Here’s how it works....
1) Call or e-mail us to request a Progesterone Sampling Kit, which will be sent to your
home address. The kit contains 2 blood tubes, biohazard bags, forms and return
envelopes. There will be sufficient for 3 tests per kit.
2) On day 8 of the bitch's season, take your bitch to your vet for the blood to be
drawn, the blood is required to be put into a blood tube provided in the kit.
3) Send the blood tube with the completed form Next Day Special delivery to Fit And
Fertile Ltd. The testing will be conducted on the day of receipt and a telephone call
will be made to you providing you with the results and a report will be e-mailed to you.
4) The result will be the level of Progesterone measured in ng/ml and a
recommendation will be provided which will either be:
17
* levels of Progesterone are too low and further testing is required,
* bitch is ready to be mated between certain days, or
* bitch has already missed the opportunity to be mated for this season.
The test is based on the bitch's Progesterone level and is not the colour indicator test.
The level of Progesterone will be measured on ng/ml.
The cost is £23.50 per test, cheque or credit card payment payable to Fit And Fertile
Ltd, please see form enclosed with the kit.

Hi Cousins. This is Spike from Suffolk. Some of you ladies may have heard of me! I'm a 7
year old wannabe stud, uhuh (flick fur off face) and I'm just chillin' awaiting my turn.
Life here is pretty cool, lots of walks, sniffs and sq's. Sq's I hear you repeat? Well, my
mum and dad don't actually use the full word as they reckon it drives me
bonkers…you know....... SQUIRRELL!!!!??? I tend to go a little potty if I hear the full word
so they abbreviate it. But, I've learnt to spell (night classes), and now when they spell
out to each other: “walkies: rabbits or squirrels” I understand and begin the traditional
Lucas war dance, you know the one: “bark, bark, woof woof, spin round 3 times, jump
up masters leg” repeat until back door opens.
19
2011 has been pretty good: two stays in Cornwall for rock pooling in the Atlantic, two
stays in Norfolk for swimming in the North Sea, plus visits to forests, and of course my
daily constitutional over local farmland.
Dad read me an article on Lucas fatties and I feel I should chip in with my tuppence
worth in their defence. I am, some might say, a well rounded Lucas of generous
proportions - 25lbs if I'm an ounce. But, how I got so is a mystery, for I have been on
diet food from the day I left my brother and sister at eight weeks old. I must have a
slow metabolic rate or be big boned. Ok I admit I LOVE my food, which comprises
modest portions of chicken breast and diet biscuits twice a day (only a saucer full you
understand) plus a plate of lickin's. My mum has tried to make me slim, but I get so
miserable because as I may have mentioned I LOVE my food. So, what to do? Ladies
still find me attractive, in fact the local floosy, Bella, a cocker spaniel positively throws
herself at me craving my attention, (flick fur off face).
Enough of this food denying mode.....how are my knees I hear you ask? Well, since
having my two synthetic cruciate replacements I have been okey dokey. The sq's still
have to move pretty sharpish to avoid my barrel runs across the lawn and I can nip up
and down the stairs mucho pronto. I do find that sometimes I stiffen up in the winter,
but mum gives me some special tablets from the vet that helps.
Did I tell you about my flea attack? I always have my monthly anti flea treatment, but
I had been out rolling in the paddock before I went to my groomer and she told my
mum I was covered in them. I can tell you that did not go down well at all. All the way
home mum was muttering that her Spike does not have fleas and the groomer must
be mad. But when we arrived home I was plonked on the table and mum groomed
me with a fine comb and kept shrieking “oh” and “ooh” and “ugh” as she nipped
several more little jumping fellas. The next few days were gruesome. A bath a day,
flea treatment, combing, and
continuous finger searching by mum,
anyone would have thought I was a
chimp the way she went at it! But
after three days the all clear was
declared and life returned to normal.
Phew!... must choose my rolling areas
more carefully.
Well that's all the news from the land
of Constable and Gainsborough, bye
my furry chums, particularly the
ladies (flick fur off face).
Love and licks
