School Profile
The Louis Armstrong Middle School (LAMS) opened in 1979 in collaboration with Queens College.
The purpose of establishing the school was to bring together a culturally diverse group of students from the borough of Queens to educate them academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. Over 35 years later we continue to be firmly committed to this mission!
Our students come from over 100 different countries and speak approximately 67 different languages. About 5% of our students are enrolled in ENL (English as a New Language) classes and 14% of our students receive Instructional Support Services in accordance with their Individualized Education Plans. We are proud to be a barrier-free school allowing physical and curricular access for all students. Student selection is based upon a lottery application process. We provide bus services to all parts of Queens.
Louis Armstrong Middle School celebrates strong student achievement and high expectations for all members of our school community. We provide a nurturing and supportive environment with an emphasis on STEM and the arts. New York State Department of Education designated our school as “A New York State Reward School” for five consecutive years. We significantly surpass Queens public schools on the New York State ELA and Mathematics Tests on a consistent basis. For the past three years, New York City Department of Education has recognized us as a “Respect for All School.”
The school was named to honor the great jazz musician and singer, Louis Armstrong. Louis and his wife, Lucille lived in the local area. As the school is named after Louis Armstrong, there is a firm commitment to the arts, which research has shown increases student performance and achievement. Many of our graduates go on to attend The Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, LaGuardia High School, and New York City Specialized High Schools.
We believe in providing every student an opportunity to succeed academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. What happens here at Louis Armstrong Middle School will change the world!
