FOUNDATION The Los Angeles Valley College

The Foundation Board Elects Executive officers Steven Manning is New President & Jason Schaff is New Vice President

After serving two successful terms, Michael Weinper stepped down as president of the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation and passes the gavel onto the capable hands of Steven Manning. On May 8, the board of directors made it official and elected a new slate of executive officers to lead the Foundation the next two years.

Steven Manning, who is a senior partner with Manning and Marder, was previously the vice president of the Board and also served in the College’s Bond Project District Oversight Committee. Manning looks to sustain the excellent work Michael Weinper initiated in his term. During his term, Manning will also work diligently with the board of directors to elevate the organization’s capacity to better serve LAVC and its students. This includes a goal of reaching $3 million in assets in the next two years.

Jason Schaff, the editor of the San Fernando Valley Business Journal, was elected as vice president. This is Schaff’s first time to serve on the Executive Committee, but he has been involved in a couple of key Foundation

committees. He has been chair of the Scholarship Committee for the last two years and has been on the committee for four years. Schaff agrees with Manning that the Foundation is ready for the next level in its growth to continue to serve Valley College.

Sharon Udkoff was elected to a second term as treasurer. Udkoff, a certified public accountant said that she is honored to serve once again. She cites that one of the things she enjoys about treasurer is that fact that she writes the checks for the student scholarships!

Art Ginsburg was elected to a third term as secretary. The owner of Art’s Delicatessen in Studio City chides that he enjoys being the celebrity in the group, but also says that he enjoys the relationships he has developed with members of the Foundation Board. The group cohesion allows the Foundation to accomplish its tasks and goals and I value that said Ginsburg.

Congratulations to the new executive officers!

In 2006, the LAVC Foundation exceeded a milestone by awarding over $106,000 in scholarships to its students—nearly a 30% increase from the previous year. Large donations to scholarships were primarily the reason for the success last year. This past year, the Foundation Board was determined to repeat the feat, if not, award even more scholarships!

The Foundation Board, and the Scholarship Committee have continued to encourage friends and local businesses and corporations to participate by establishing scholarships. Existing scholarship donors were recruited to spread the word to their friends to encourage relatives and friends to donate to their respective funds, or better yet, start their own scholarship or endowment. Campus faculty and staff also got in the picture by encouraging their students to apply for scholarships; some also have gone so far as to also establish a scholarship.

Scholarship and Awards Night was held on May 17. Nearly 250 people were in attendance. A number of donors joined students, faculty, staff, and the Foundation Board for the evening event.

The Foundation received over 700 applications and awarded nearly 223 scholarships totaling $110,000, which is $4,000 more than last year’s tremendous feat.

If you are interested in establishing a named scholarship with the Foundation, please call (818) 947-2618. Scholarship information forms as well as endowment information forms are also available online at www.lavcfoundation.org.

New Location at Braemar Country Club Garners More Fun and $$$

The Third Annual Monarch Golf Classic was held on June 11 at Braemar Country Club raising over $18,000 for the LAVC Foundation. Nearly 100 people participated at the new location. While some found the course to be challenging, all had a great time. There were a number of great hole-in-one prizes including a Lexus, vacation get-aways, and cash, but sadly no winners; perhaps next year! 1) The gentlemen from Pacific Supply pose with a nice backdrop; 2) Toshiba’s Jo Ann Paugh chipping one; 3) Tim, Steve, & Terry Manning; 4) Bob Oberstein watches Byron Stock putting; 5) Unknown golfer has nice form! 6) Monarch Golf Classic volunteers included the Associated Student Union and members of the Men & Women Water Polo Team—Thank you!

  • Prior to official audits and reports, revenue and support received this past fiscal year totaled $813,676. More than $316,000 has been distributed for various campus programs and projects including our auxiliary groups. More than $110,000 has been distributed for student scholarships.

A number of endowments have been added including the National Notary Foundation, the Carol Caldwell, and the Ed Sugar & Marion Heyn Endowment. Joe Nordmann and Mary Ellen Pangonis continue their support by making donations to their respective endowments. Altogether, the Foundation manages a total of $1.312 million dollars in endowments, and increase of 32%.

The Foundation’s investment portfolio generated over $200,000 in dividends an unrealized gains while maintaining a conservative philosophy in its management.

Valley College is continuing to make progress with its capital projects. The Maintenance and Operations Building and the Monarch Stadium renovation was completed last year. The Allied Health/Science Center will be completed in another year and the Library Building is scheduled for ground-breaking soon after that. With these projects, we continue to seek donors interested in naming opportunities for our campus buildings and establishing endowments to sustain the wonderful venues and programs that Valley College has to offer.

It has been a terrific 2007 for your Los Angeles Valley College Foundation! I would like to thank my Board of Directors for their continued commitment and service, Valley College President Dr. Tyree Wieder, our volunteers who serve on various Foundation Committees, the faculty, staff, and administrators of LAVC, and of course friends like you who support the Foundation financially and morally!

    Sincerely yours,

Raul Castillo Executive Director Class of 1988

    Dear Friends,

This year has been a year of change. No longer are we called the Patrons Association. We are now the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation. The official name change in February has been well-received by everyone; it’s just an easier way of remembering who we are and what we do exactly. Change has also come with our Foundation President. After two terms as President, Michael Weinper passes the gavel on to Steven Manning.

The Foundation is extremely grateful for Michael’s leadership, and for this Executive Director, I appreciate his friendship. I look forward to working with Steve as the Foundation strives to achieve its goal of increasing its assets to $3 million in the next two years.

We have a number of highlights from this past year beginning with your President’s Annual Gala. Co-Chairs Dick Cooper and Elaine Baylor and the committee organized another successful Gala. More than 400 people were in attendance and raised a net of $60,000 as it honored Alumni Sean & Christine Astin, Robbi & Rickey Gelb, and long-time supporter Verizon.

The Monarch Golf Classic had a change of venue at Braemer Country Club as it raised a net of $18,000 this year. Instructor Dr. Alan Cowen produced a Doo Wop concert in March to benefit the Foundation. The concert showcased the Mighty Echoes; the concert brought in 314 people and raised nearly $3,000!

The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee constructed the much anticipated Wall of Fame Mural in January, and had its first induction banquet in June drawing nearly 400 people in Monarch Hall. Nine people, two teams, and one organization were inducted. Since it’s inception, Chairman Paul Sabolic and the committee have raised over $50,000 to cover costs to construct the wall mural, produce the induction banquet, and other materials to promote the program.

IT’S BEEN AN HONOR TO SERVE YOU AS PRESIDENT 4

    THE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT

    Dear Friend of LAVC,

Four years ago, I became the president of what was then called the Patrons Association, the non-profit foundation of Los Angeles Valley College. Such a long and confusing name, wouldn’t you say? I am happy to announce that one of the last things I was involved with as President was to simply change our name to The Los Angeles Valley College Foundation.

After serving my second term, I now humbly step down and pass the gavel to Steve Manning, who moves from vice president to your president. I am happy to have worked with Steve on the Executive Committee for the last two years and I wish him continued success in the growth of the Foundation

It’s truly been an honor to serve you as president these past four years. I’ve enjoyed working with the Foundation Board of Directors as well as Executive Director Raul Castillo and Valley College President Dr. Tyree Wieder. These two individuals are true treasures for Valley College.

During this tenure, I’m proud to report we have accomplished many things. In 2003, we established a much needed investment policy that paved the way to hire a firm to create and manage our investment portfolio. We went from CD’s and Money Market funds that generated around $7,000 per year to a prudent investment portfolio that has generated over $500,000 in dividends and unrealized gains in just four years.

Four years ago, there were but four established endowments with our Foundation totaling about $175,000. With a sound investment policy in

place and good donor stewardship, the Foundation now has a total of twenty endowments totaling over $1.3 million. Our assets hovered around $500,000 four years ago. We celebrated the milestone of passing $1 million mark three years ago, and now we are closing in on assets of $2 million!

Our Board of Directors have also grown. We had core group of fourteen members and now it is twenty. While members have come and gone, it has been a special treat for me to get to know each and every one of them. Their dedication to grow the LAVC Foundation is the reason for our success.

As an alumnus, I will forever be grateful for the good quality of education I received at Valley College. Therefore, I have valued the scholarships the Foundation has awarded to students. Just in the last two years, we have awarded over $200,000 to as many as 440 students.

Yes, this is my Presidential Swan Song, but know that I still enjoy being a part of this organization. I will continue to be involved. In fact, I have been appointed the Chair of the Foundation’s Finance and Investment Committee. I now join the members at large and offer my support to our new President, Steve Manning.

Thank you all for continuing to support the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation. Your generosity allows our Foundation to be successful in serving our students and this wonderful campus.

    Sincerely,

    Michael Weinper

Dr. Jim Slosson, a founding member of the LAVC Faculty, passed away on April 28, one day after his wife Nancy passed away. Dr. Slosson was born and grew up in Van Nuys. He was the chair of the Geology Department at Valley College from 1975 to 1984 as well as coach of the track and field team.

Dr. Slosson also worked for the City and County of Los Angeles and the State of California and helped develop and pass the Seismic Safety Commission Act of 1975 to advise ways to reduce earthquake risk. He also consulted for Erin Brokovich and Alumnus Ed Masry about water tables in their famed litigation against PG&E. The Slossons are survived by their children Bonnie and Thom, and two grandchildren.

Alumnus Bruce F. Whizin received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Hillel 818 on May 21. Whizin is the President of the Whizin Foundation and the Genisis Charitable Consulting Group. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Schecter Institue of Religious Studies in Israel.

Alumnus Ed Begley, Jr. has a new television reality show called “Living with Ed” on HGTV. The show premiered in January with nine episodes. The show looks at the family life of Ed and his wife Rachelle, and how they try to do their part in preserving our environment.

Alumnus Joe Orozco played on the 1974 Valley College Baseball team that won the State Championship that year. Joe is president of Southern Cal Financial in Burbank. He also sits on the Board of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation.

Another Successful PRO LAVC Year! PRO LAVC completed it fourth campaign year bringing in over $145,000 from a number of different campus groups working to raise additional monies for their respective programs and projects.

Thirty-seven groups are now participating in PRO LAVC, which is a matching giving program created by the Foundation four years ago to encourage self-campus fundraising. In it’s first year, the Patrons provided a match of $13,000. Sixteen groups participated and raised a total of $50,000. The recent campaign that brought in over $150,000 has a match of $32,000. “We’re very glad to be a part of PRO LAVC,” said Geordie Wright who established the Dance Program fund and received a match of $1,881.

The Alexis deToqueville PRO LAVC Trophy is given to the group that raises the most funds in the campaign year. For the second year in a row, the honor goes to Keeping Pace Fund, which is the Journalism Fund; it received a match of $7,222. “The match can certainly help us send our students to conferences and seminars by covering their air fare and hotel expenses,” said Journalism co-chair Bill Dauber and Rod Lyons.

Raul Castillo incorprated a public clip art and changed it’s color scheme, size and shape. The image is a sun rising over the mountains of the San Fernando Valley. The sun also represents all the students of Los Angeles Valley College who are bright and rising!
