Religious Education Registration REMINDER! Thank you to the many families who have returned their Religious Education Registration Forms by the August 15
th
deadline. If you haven’t already returned your Registration Form, please do so as soon as possible as classes are filling up. Please remember to include the $30 administrative late fee (not applicable to NEW families). Registration form and cover letter were included with the end of year Progress Report and sent home with the children in April. Additional forms are available in the Rectory, Parish Center, back of Church or on the Parish website at stalscaldwell.org. You will receive a mailing with class assignment and calendar in early September; classes will begin the week of September 22
nd. Please feel free to call the Parish
Center (226-0209 x7 or x9) with any questions or to share your talents by becoming a part of our program. Thank you. ☺
Catechists, Aides and Subs – NEEDED! We are still in need of catechists and aides for many grade levels in all of our Religious Education programs: Sunday mornings (bi-weekly) and evenings (monthly), Monday afternoons and evenings (weekly). It takes a combined total of approximately 60 classes to accommodate the more than 700 children and their families attending Religious Education! That may seem like a lot, but many hands make light work. Please prayerfully consider sharing the love of God with the children of our parish as a catechist or aide. THANK YOU to those who have already answered this call. Full time catechists and aides are eligible for tuition wavier. Any questions please call Agnes Egan 973-226-0209 x7 or Ed Karpinski 973-226-0209 x9 or email us at [email protected] or [email protected]. Thank you!
Catechists, Aides and Subs – SAVE the DATE!
SEPTEMBER 15th – We will celebrate Catechetical Sunday at the 9:00 AM Mass followed by our annual Breakfast Social and Kickoff Meeting in the Parish Center.
September 15, 2013
Dear Parishioners,
In parishes throughout the United States Catechetical
Sunday is celebrated on the third Sunday of September.
This year Catechetical Sunday, September 15 invites us to
“Open the Door of Faith”. Our parishioners who will
serve as catechists this year will be called forth and
commissioned for their ministry. Each of us is called
forth each day by virtue of our Baptism to hand on the
faith to others and to be a witness to our faith by word and
action. When we were confirmed we spoke for ourselves
and we made the promise to continue this mission. Today
is a good day for all of us to rededicate ourselves to this
mission as members of the community of faith. It is a
good day to plan ahead to attend a lecture, read a book, or
take a course to continue our own faith formation. Many
opportunities are available throughout the year. A life of
faith is a journey to encounter Christ and follow him who
loves us unconditionally. Catechetical Sunday is an
important time in parish life and in our own lives to renew
that importance of our own lifelong dedication to growing
in the Catholic Faith.
In our Gospel reading today Jesus again teaches in
parables. The parables have the same structure:
something is lost, a search follows, what is lost is found
and the people rejoice. Like everyone else I can get lost
very easily in my ministry, in what I need to do and what I
plan on doing and the normal everyday chores. We lose
ourselves when we allow the hurts and wounds from life
experiences to close our hearts to love. We try to find
happiness in things, in iPhones, video games, and clothing
with a popular name attached and we often overlook
people as we try to build a lucrative career. How easy it is
for us to lose sight of who we are and our mission to bring
love and healing to the people around us and to our broken
world. In each of the parables when the lost was found-
the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son each of these
people, the shepherd, the woman and the father found
completion in their lives. Our lives too will be complete
when we fulfill our mission.
God never loses us. God is with us always, waiting for us
to wake up and realize who we are. God is patient with
all our weaknesses, ever joyful when we remember our
mission in the world, remember who we are and when we
turn in gratitude to God. This week in gratitude for what
we have can we remember those who are still lost, those
not accepted by others, the undocumented immigrants
who seek earnestly to be good and faithful members of our
country and of our world? Can we help these people to
find their way and feel at home by our call to mission?
Peace!

A note to parents about
Harry Potter
(The following is an excerpt from a book review in
The Tablet of July 23, 2005, by Raymond Edwards of
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling).
What of apprehensions among some Christian
parents, particularly in America, that there is something
unwholesome about these stories? Michael O’Brien, the
prolix apocalypticist, claims the series offers a Gnostic vision
of the world, deceptively portraying occult practices, which
are always illicit, as natural and attractive. He contrasts this
with Tolkien: “Harry’s world is about pride, Frodo’s about
sacrificial love.” American pastors have staged public book-
burnings.
These worries underlie a recent revived news story
claiming Pope Benedict disapproves of the Potter books. A
German pundit, Gabriele Kuby, wrote a book along lines
similar to O’Brien’s, and sent it in 2003 to the then Cardinal
Ratzinger. His polite letter of acknowledgement thanks her
for pointing out that “subtle seductions” can impede
children's growth in faith. He suggests she send her book to
Fr. Peter Fleetwood, than at the Pontifical Council of
Culture, for considered comment. Fr. Fleetwood, an
authority on “New Age” movements, has subsequently
several times stated he believes the books to be profoundly
moral, and indeed Christian; and that they must be judged
not as theology but as imagination literature. It takes
considerable imagination to see a papal “condemnation”
here; but I suppose Frau Kuby too has books to sell.
What, then, is their moral framework? Whatever the
case in the real world, in Rowling’s fictional universe magic
is in essence morally neutral, a talent requiring development
and training (its inner workings remain mysterious, which is
as it should be). As with any other talent, the use made of it
defines its moral content. Dark magic, issuing in death and
cruelty, is explicitly seen as a bad thing and a perversion. At
its most prosaic, magic is simply an alternative to the
developed technology of the machine; at higher (or deeper)
levels, it is something fundamentally mysterious: its highest,
deepest, most mysterious and powerful form, is love. Harry
is protected against Voldemort because his mother, out of
love, died saving him. Dumbledore appears weak precisely
because he allows for potential good even in the apparently
wicked. This is surely, a profoundly moral and responsible
vision, one that has become clearer as the series has
progressed. Sacrificial love is at the heart of Rowling’s
moral universe just as it is of Tolkien’s.
