welcomed only one at a time in

our lobby — if someone is

already inside, we’ll let you

know and ask you to wait

outside for a short time. We’ll

also ask you to print your name

in a visitor’s log for the purpose

of contact tracing in case there

is any report of a Covid

infection.

Hours are:

Monday-Friday: 9am-5pm

Saturdays: 9am -1pm

Sundays: 9:30am-1:30pm

If you wish to speak with a

priest it is always a good idea to

call ahead of time for an

appointment.

Happy Mother’s Day!

We want to wish all mothers a

happy day and pray that God

will continue to bless our

mothers with a year of good

health and happiness, joy and

fortitude, tranquility and hopes

fulfilled.

Fruit that Will Remain

E– mail Father Ralph: [email protected]

Every Christmas a variety of vendors who work with our parish send a fruit

basket to the rectory as a way of thanking us for our business with them. Some

years we get a lot of fruit all at once so we’re sure to eat the most perishable

fruits first and then we can follow up with the more long-lasting fruit in the

subsequent weeks. I refer to such items as “business fruit.” (If it’s from a

funeral home I call it “funeral fruit.”) In any case, I do enjoy the fruit-that-

remains as much as I enjoy the fruit we eat first.

In today’s Gospel (John 15:9-17), Jesus says, “It was not you who chose me,

but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain.”

Even though I’ve been reading this passage for years, it is only now that I’ve

reflected on this concept of “fruit that will remain.” One way to look at it is

that when we act in certain ways, when we say certain things, there is an

instant effect. But there is a lingering, ongoing effect too. “You’ll never amount

to anything....” That hurts immediately...but then goes on to poison someone’s

self-esteem for some time afterward — perhaps even for a lifetime. “You’re

such a help and such a delight....” These words encourage not only at the

moment they are spoken, but they have a lasting, uplifting effect on the person

who hears them.

Jesus points out that he has chosen his disciples — and of course that includes

us — for the mission of bearing fruit-that-will-remain. Consider that this is your

mission for the rest of today! Do things and say things that will have a lasting

positive effect. (And don’t do or say things that will have a lasting negative

effect.) This requires a certain amount of mindfulness — as opposed to

carelessness in our speech and actions. And this weekend gives us the perfect

opportunity to bear good long-lasting fruit since we’re celebrating Mother’s

Day. Saying the loving and grateful things to our moms comes so easily today.

Doing special things for her is also easy on a day like today. After the success

of the loving acts and words toward Mom, keep the trend going on Monday.

Jesus chose you for Monday’s “gift of fruit”. Think of who else needs some

affirmation, some extra help, a gift of some of your time or talent.

Jesus tells us that this is the appointment he now gives us. And that

appointment doesn’t end on Monday.

We finally have an initial drawing and floor plan for the construction of

Happy Mother’s Day!

We wish all our mothers a happy and healthy Mother’s Day!

Loving God,

as a mother gives life and nourishment

to her children, so you watch over your Church.

Bless our mother. Let the example of her faith and love shine forth.

Grant that we, her family, may honor her always

with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Our Lady of Fatima

We celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13.

Mary appeared to three peasant children near Fatima,

Portugal, six times between May 13 and October 13, 1917,

and asked for prayers for world peace and an end to World

War I, for sinners, and for the conversion of Russia. She

entrusted the children with three secrets, regarding devotion

to her Immaculate Heart, a vision of hell, and a “bishop in

white” shot by soldiers firing bullets and arrows. Many

connect the third secret to the attempted assassination of

Blessed Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981, and the pope

thanked Mary for guiding the bullet and saving him. At the

Vatican, Pope Francis has stood before the statue of Our

Lady from the Fatima shrine and formally entrusted the

world to Mary.

Scripture Insights

T he Lectionary’s snippets often drop us into the

middle of a story, like latecomers to a movie.

Today, we are in the midst of the Acts of the Apostles.

From a human point of view this haphazard,

surprising sequence of events in Acts leaves two

impressions about the infant Church: its vulnerability

and its energetic joy. The larger spiritual view sees the

steady hand of providence as God gradually unveils a

master plan of salvation.

These surprises culminate in the greatest shock of

all, as Luke explains in today's passage: the dramatic

shift to include the Gentiles among the People of God.

Since the second century, the Church has been almost

exclusively made up of Gentiles - non-Jews-a situation

that none of the Apostles or New Testament writers

could have imagined. In turn, it is hard for us to

imagine how wrenching this change was for them.

Israel had always expected the Gentile nations to come

to their God (see Isaiah 2:1-4) but thought they would

do so by way of Judaism.

Peter's remark in verse 28 supplies context: “God

has shown me that I should not call any person

profane”. It dawned on him and the young Church

that God was going to save the Gentiles not as Jews

but as Gentiles. Note their astonishment in 10:34. The

Greek phrase calls to mind something like an

overpowering idea suddenly taking hold. Gentiles were

no longer dogs under the Jewish table begging for the

children's bread (see Matthew 15:27) but full partners

and joint heirs with the ancient people of the covenant.

The shift signals a major new theme in Acts. Jesus

says in our Gospel today, “I no longer call you

slaves…. [but] friends.” The reason for this is the

unconditional and total love with which the Father

loves the Son: “As the Father loves me so I also love

you” (15:9). This in turn requires the same surrender

to each other: Now “love one another as I have loved

you” (15:12).
