"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom (or what) shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom (or what) shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1)

Sussex United Methodist Church intends to remain a rock of salvation through this entire COVID crisis. Even though we are not worshipping together on Sundays, the church remains open for prayer. Pastor Jim will be there on Sunday morning for coffee, conversation, moral or spiritual support. Service by PowerPoint will be emailed out.

In Matthew 24, Jesus warns, “Take heed that no one leads you astray." There will always be wars and

rumors of wars (and one might easily add, deadly pestilence). "See that you are not alarmed," advises Jesus,

"For these things happen, but it's not the end." But, sometimes it's harder than others to "keep calm and carry

on." I just reread Psalm 42 in preparation for this Sunday's sermon. "My tears have been my food, day and

night, while people say to me continually, 'Where is your God now?" At times like these, it's useful to

remember other times like these that we came through just fine. At times like these, it's useful to remember

that "if God is for us; who can be successful against us." (Romans 8) God is for us.

And Jesus says, "Let not our hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. In the Father's house are

many dwelling places . . . I go to prepare a place for you." Even at the end of this life-span there is another

beyond it. I believe we are somewhat spoiled by the great advances in medical science to expect practical

immortality. But we shouldn't. Practical immortality would most likely be pretty boring, just as infinity is

mostly empty space. Jesus came to give us something a lot fuller and more abundant. I look forward to the

next dwelling place, and just that thought by itself makes the here and now much richer and fuller. Paul prayed,

in Ephesians 1, "that the eyes of our hearts might be enlightened, and we might know the great riches to which

we are called."

The psalmist concludes Psalm 42, asking, "Why are you cast down, O my soul, why are you disquieted

within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him . . ." Keep calm and carry on; better days lie ahead.

SUMC SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA The purpose of this scholarship is to establish a fund to stimulate and perpetuate the Christian goals as set forth by the Sussex United Methodist Church for the development of strong morals, sound decisions and a sense of direction to serve Christ’s kingdom. 1. Available to all members of SUMC that are entering at least his/her third semester of post high

school education in an undergraduate program. 2. The applicant will submit a 250 word essay that includes the following: A. Why he/she is seeking this scholarship. Financial need not be addressed. B. What are his/her goals in academia and how do these relate to the Christian morals with which he/she was raised. C. How the candidate expects to integrate his/her career goals with their faith journey. D. Where are you with your faith journey? E. What “Christian” activities the applicant has been active in for the past 12 months. 1. Volunteerism/attendance at SUMC or post high school programs. 2. Participation in activities outside of his/her normal curriculum. 3. The scholarship will be tied to evidence of hours of community service, attendance, service, and

talents rendered within the past 12 months. These hours will NOT be linked to any curriculum course studies. Signed documentation must be supplied at the time of application and it will include phone numbers/addresses of appropriate persons that can verify the service(s).

4. Each applicant will submit to a personal interview with this committee regarding his/her fitness for the scholarship.

5. Each accepted applicant will also commit to a formal presentation of the scholarship award at a Sunday worship service amenable to both parties.

6. The scholarship recipient will also agree to give an update of his/her progress and faith journey one year after receiving the scholarship.

7. Scholarship fund dollars will be made directly to the institution of higher education. 8. Scholarship dollars will be granted at the end of SUMC’s fiscal year. (Disposition of funds will be

made for the spring semester.) 9. All applications and documentation for the scholarship are due by the post marked date of June

15th of the current year. 10. Interviews will be conducted during early August of the current year. 11. Notification of the scholarship recipient(s) will be made by October 1st of the current year. 12. This committee makes no decisions based upon age, race, gender, political or sexual orientation. 13. This committee reserves the right to hold funds from one year to the next if a suitable candidate

is not found. 14. There will be no guarantee of the amount of funds allocated each year from this fund. 15. Any party can contribute funds to the scholarship, but the Scholarship Committee will have the

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate students attending vocational/technical, two-year, or four-year higher education programs for general studies, as well as seminary and ministry careers. Scholarships are granted each year from endowment funds established through generous gifts from individuals and families. All applicants must be a member of a Wisconsin United Methodist Church. Recipients are selected based upon academics, leadership and involvement in church, school, and community life. Community Banquet is a free meal offered twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at St. James Church to serve a nutritious hot meal and time of fellowship to any who choose to attend. SUMC’s Saturday, April 4 volunteer day has been cancelled. If you are signed up to volunteer that day or if you are someone who likes to stop in and help if needed, those operations are on hold until further notice. They have a set crew of volunteers and do not want to risk having any others. Thanks for your caring and remember they are still accepting donations of food only. The Food Pantry is open but operates as a drive thru, pre-boxed food pantry. Most needed items include jelly, jam, Hamburger Helper, Ramen noodles, mac & cheese, boxed spaghetti, boxed noodles, Jell-O, pudding, toilet paper, canned peas, carrots, mixed vegetables

We have been asked to move to a no contact food delivery system and less than 10 people in our space when possible. Here is what we are doing: · Closed our lobby and back doors-food donations only, can be left by the back doors, just ring the

doorbell weekdays 10am-noon or leave in barrels at Piggly Wiggly and Pick N Save. · Reduced SOS donation intake hours to 10am to noon, Monday thru Friday. Food pantry remains

open at regular times. · Reducing volunteers and people in our space. · Using gloves and hand sanitizer. Encouraging those at risk and who are ill to stay home. · No longer taking clothing and household items to reduce point of contact. · Continuing to provide food during our regular food pantry shifts: Monday 5:30-7pm, Wednesday 1-

2:30pm and Saturday 10am to noon. · Handing out pre-boxed food, along with a bag of food from our cooler and freezer via drive thru, by

placing food in the trunk or having client put food in car to keep socially distant and have no contact. · If someone needs food, come during pantry hours, they don't need to register and just drive thru. · You can receive food each week. · Bag lunch and breakfast items for kids (age 0-18) available via drive thru at SOS from 11am to

noon. · Civic Center is closed except for voting until April 8th.

Opportunities for SUMC Nurture, Outreach and Witness (NOW)

Crafts for a Cause is a fun and friendly group who meet at the church every other Wednesday evening to make prayer shawls, lapghans, and prayer squares. Please join us! If you cannot join us, please consider taking one of the easy patterns in the folder on the shelf outside the office and making something at home. You can also help by donating yarn. Meetings should resume Tuesday April 28 at 6:30 pm.

Prayer Shawls are available for you to take at any time. The display is set up outside the church office.

Prayer Squares are small knit or crocheted squares (about 18”- 20” square) to offer to those parents whose babies do not survive the birthing process.

Lap Robes are for persons confined to wheelchairs that are often chilly and appreciate a hand crafted blanket to keep their legs and laps warm. Blankets may be knit or crocheted. Size should be from 25” x 36” to 30” x 40”.

Hats, Scarves and Mittens Help decorate our SOS Mitten Tree with warm handmade winter gifts. This is a great way to use leftover yarn from other projects you may be working on.

Kingdom Workers If you need help with a project around the house that you are unable to tackle yourself (cleaning gutters, washing windows, small painting projects), contact Pat Keller, Roberta, or Pastor Jim. Your needs will be assessed and a crew will be established to assist you whenever possible. If you are willing to assist when there is a need, let us know to add your name to the list.

Naomi’s Cupboard This ministry of caring for those recovering from illness or surgery is still active. If you need help as you recover, please contact Verda, the church office or Pastor Jim and meals and other help needed will be arranged. ERAs Senior Network

A faith-based, community-centered nonprofit organization serving Waukesha County, Wisconsin When volunteering with ERAs, you can decide how much or how little you would like to

volunteer. When called for a specific task, you can say no if it does not fit into your schedule.

Spring Yard Clean Up Every year around May, we need volunteers to clean over 80 yards of seniors and adults with disabilities. A one-time event to rake leaves, pick up sticks, clean flower beds, pull weeds, wash first floor outdoor windows, clean out first floor gutters, and/or place lawn furniture. Each yard is different and the tasks will be clearly laid out before you participate. Volunteer individually, with your family, or as a group!

AVID Tutors at Waukesha Horning Middle School from 7:50 - 8:40 am any day of the week. AVID is designed to have tutors help middle school students get to the next step in their thinking by asking guided questions. Volunteers do not need to know the Reading, History, Science, or Math content the students are working on. Jamie Dittman, teacher at Horning, says, “The kids are really motivated to do well in Scholar Groups, and the teacher is always there as well, so the volunteers do not have to worry about behavior, just prompting with questions and being great listeners!”

Minor Home Repair If you’re handy around the house, sometimes our clients are in need of minor repairs. Help with things like changing a light bulb or smoke alarm battery, hanging a curtain rod, or caulking around a bathtub. There is no electrical work, work on a roof, or other potentially dangerous projects. Help those who can no longer do it themselves.

Client Assessments All Eras clients are required to have an in-home assessment before our volunteers are able to provide services to them. Eras staff speaks with the client prior to your visit and performs a background check to ensure your safety. Eras’ staff will provide training on how to perform an in-home assessment. During the in-home visit, you will provide clients with resources given to you by Eras, explain how our program works, fill out a few forms with them, and help us determine how we can be of assistance to the client. Thanks for being the first volunteer to help our new seniors!

Volunteer from Home Call clients to talk with them or just make sure they are doing okay.

Form Help Help clients with administrative tasks such as forms, letters, or bills. Volunteers go to seniors or adults with disabilities’ homes where they assist in reading or helping fill out the documents. Time commitment varies depending on need.

Phone Assistance in Eras Main Office needed Thursday mornings from 9-11 am to call volunteers to give them their driving assignments. We are looking for someone who is comfortable making phone calls, likes talking to people, and is interested in helping with the coordination of volunteers. Thrift Shop Help organize donations for various thrift shops that Eras partners with. Sort clothes, organize the shop and help clients pick out items for their families.

Friendly Visiting Be a friend to a senior or an adult with a disability who is isolated and looking for someone to talk to. Visit with clients in their home on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Contact Judith at 262.522.2411 or JudithA@eraswaukesha.org.

Drive our shared-ride van in Menomonee Falls! Find-a-Ride Network program transports seniors and adults with disabilities to medical appointments at Community Memorial Hospital and Froedtert Town Hall Health Center. We need volunteers to serve on a regular basis, drive our new Dodge Caravan and have access to a mobile tablet with GPS mapping. Only clients in Menomonee Falls will be transported at this time. Urgent Ongoing Need for Volunteer Drivers Transport seniors and adults with disabilities to healthcare appointments and grocery stores. Only drive when you have the time! This opportunity is very flexible and can be scheduled week to week. Areas of need include Waukesha, Menomonee Falls, New Berlin, Oconomowoc, and Brookfield.

Dining Site Meal Packers/Servers Meal Packers work as a team to assemble trays of hot food, seal the trays with plastic wrap and place them in travel containers for drivers to pick up. Meal Servers dish up the meals for seniors dining in and serve them at their tables. Meal Servers will also clear tables and clean the dining room once lunch is finished.

Non-Medical Respite Develop an on-going relationship with a caregiver/care receiver couple in your community. Volunteers provide respite care so the caregiver can have a much needed break. It would require a weekly 2 - 4 hour commitment to visit with the caregiver’s loved one. No medical background necessary. Training is provided. What is needed is your time, a listening ear, and the desire to have meaningful impact on your neighbors.

Volunteers age 18 years and older are welcome to participate in all programs as volunteers of ERAs Senior Network. Volunteers age 55 years and older are encouraged to become RSVP members. Special youth volunteer opportunities are also available.

Just be sure you choose the church in Sussex, WI as there is another Sussex UMC in another state! Scrip gift card purchasing is a great way to benefit the church. There is a six page list of participating retailers that will sell you gift cards then donate a portion back to our church. You can get a copy of the Scrip vendors from the table outside the offices and choose your gift cards. Then give me a list along with a check made out to SUMC for the total and I can order the cards for you. Or, sign on to Shopwithscrip.com and set up an account for yourself. Make your account Presto Pay and order your cards online. Our church enrollment number is FC24B7A136863. You will need this number to designate your orders go to SUMC. The purpose of the prayer families is to share our concern and support at times other than during a crisis. Ways to do that are to include the person or family in your prayers during the week. You may wish to let them know that they are in your thoughts by sending a note, talking to them at church or a telephone call. The names are chosen at random, but sometimes seem by design, in that it has come at a particularly appropriate time for them.
