History of The Loop● Late 1780’s - Jean Baptiste Point

DuSable makes trading post on the north bank of the Chicago River.

● 1803-1804 - Fort Dearborn is established on the other side of the river.

● 1861-1865 - Civil War brings rapid growth

● 1871 - Great Chicago fire hits and consumes central part of the city

History Continued● 1880’s - Skyscrapers are on the

rise. Creates skyline and character of downtown. Also greatly increases population density and creates need for mass transport within city.

● 1897 - Loop is finished and creates integrated intracity transportation system and solidifies the area as a transportation and historic core of the city (not a loop train system at the time)

● 1947 - CTA is created● 1947 - 1970 CTA overcomes

initial problems and takes over public transport

● 1974-1990 - RTA is created CTA struggles

● 1990 - CTA is reinvented to the its current grandeur
