A corporate personality to redefine and a network of services to organize are the premises for the development of Pomilio Blumm’s brand identi-ty. Studying the logo, adjusted in terms of geometric shapes and font sizes, is the first step to produce the design project. The brand aware-ness, developed over the years, is preserved and enhanced, creating a more effective impact in terms of combination between vertical and horizontal lines. The logo expresses the visual elements of the complex

product identity of the company. The company’s historic symbol, a rhinoceros, is destructured and inscribed in a square, so that it be-comes the modular element of this new iconographic system. The result is a contemporary language bor-rowed from the formal aesthetics of the apps; a method that can provide the different units of the company with the necessary visual-semiotic uniformity, in order to convey any present and future declination of the brand identity with great flexibility.

Various Logos

A sample of the many

logos that I have

designed in the last few

years

An effective logo should possess unique characteristics and the branding process should be based on solid foundations. Understand-ing the distinctive elements that the logo should reflect is the first and crucial step in this process, but conducting extensive research into styles and trends is equally impor-tant. The results of the preliminary research should then be elaborat-ed to develop the design brief and the logo concept, using creativity and ingenuity. Signs, symbols and anything that can foster the devel-opment of lateral thinking should be taken into consideration. “A logo is a flag, a signature, an escutcheon, a street sign. A logo does not sell (directly), it identifies. A logo is rarely a description of a business. A logo derives meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around. A logo is less important than the product it signifies; what it represents is more important than what it looks like. The subject matter of a logo can be almost anything.” (Paul Rand)

There are three main areas of in-tervention in the District of Sicily (Ancient crafts, ancient tastes and traditions itineraries). Similarly, the Triskelion (the symbol of Sicily) has 3 legs and Sicily itself has a roughly triangular shape. Therefore, a tri-angle seems to be the most appro-priate picture to develop the logo concept and the pictogram for the District. A triangle that is not static, but rotates around its center and becomes revolution.

Methodological

approach to

the creation of the logo

for “The Municipality

of Siena”,

formal analysis and

development of the

symbol/shield

The Municipality of Siena launch-es its website, whose contents are designed to improve the interaction with visitors. The emblem of the city is a black and white gothic shield. The earliest documents containing representations of the Balzana (this is the name of the emblem) date back to the years between 1262 and 1290. However, it was in 1994 that Andrea Rauch created a system for a coordinated image. In this image, the emblem of the city is associat-ed with the Martini font (created by Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the XV century and later developed by Walter Sardonini). Staying faithful to the shape and history of the logo, in the version for the web, the black line on the shield becomes an hori-zon on which a crease discovers a multitude of contents, chromatically defined. Enjoy your Siena, a city that is able to offer a variety of ex-periences. This is symbolized in the logo by the fact that the black part of the shield becomes a different skyline to adapt to each of the four types of experiences represented.

The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo advertising campaign appears in the most prestigious Scandinavian, Eng-lish and German magazines about wine, travel and tourism. It is impor-tant to mention the English-language magazine Wine Spectator and other popular magazines, such as De-canter, Vinum, The Times Magazine, Falstaff, National Geographic and Scanorama. Montepulciano d’Abru-zzo will also be in the spotlight online, on information websites and on websites concerning wine and leisure, such as the Decanter and Telegraph websites in the United Kingdom and Traveltalk.de and Fvw.de in Germany. The qualities of the wine are written within a bot-tle-shaped picture. The wine talks about itself, describes itself and encourages us to discover it.A copy-based campaign, with a very strong impact. A campaign whose texts and backgrounds change their colors according to the type of wine (rosé, white or red), while the words come alive through the motion graphics technique.

Glamorous destinations, hi-tech architecture, exotic food: none of these aspects embodies the essence of true modernity, which implies the ability to see traditions through different eyes. This is the premise for the creative concept developed for Puglia Promotion, a campaign that goes beyond the conventions of tourist promotion to show territorial and cultural peculiarities, food and wine traditions from unusual stand-points. The campaign is based on an ironic criticism of stereotypes and uses figures of speech and semantic exchanges between text and image. All aesthetic choices are consistent with the idea of break. While there is a general tendency to use images of landscapes in highly saturated colors to promote a territory, the choice of using black and white pictures, with ethereal settings, conveys a desire to show the traditions of the land in an innovative way. Each subject becomes a new tradition and is given a number in order to be associated with a series of events advertised on the social channels of the region.

Gianni Piacentino

Cross Race (1999-2000)

Trained in the dynamic environment of the Turin of the mid-1960s, when the Arte Povera movement begins, Gianni Piacentino starts working with industrial materials, from metals to varnishes and creates his first minimalist sculptures. These cele-brate the dynamism of machines, the myth of speed, engines and movement, resembling cars, bicy-cles, motorbikes and airplanes. In his sculptures, he assembles parts of airplanes and cars, naming the outcomes Trophy, Vehicle, Race. The new logo developed for Turin Airport is based on the study of Piacentino’s work, to make Turin become a protagonist of the interna-tional markets and relationships. In fact, Piacentino and his racing cars embody the idea of dynamism and speed that an airport should com-municate. Cross Race is examined, designed and modified to become a stylized design that symbolizes over-all view, growth and development. A light touch that will make us fly, even if only in our imagination. Turin is going to fly with the sign.

Art book cover

Duplicity is an art book with more than 100 pictures, including illus-trations, drawings, photos, graphic images and unfiltered thoughts. The book is proposed as a reflection on the ambivalences that lie at the bases of its creation: being a design-er to make a living or living to be a designer? An introspective journey: a series of graphic images not ap-plied to work that, though obtained with the use of different techniques (pencil, felt-tip pens, photo editing, vectors), have followed the same in-

ner path, drawing on a state of mind, to give shape and color to a sensa-tion or a feeling, always in search ofstylistic fullness and the perfect trait that can express the emotional intensity of being ambivalent. Love/hate, black/white, good/evil, clean/dirty: Duplicity does not have half measures; it is an art book with no masks or rules, free to express emotions without any fears of being judged, if not as a book in itself. An accurate starting point to reflect and do further research.

The Authority for electricity, gas and water is responsible for the development of competition in the electric power, natural gas and drinking-water supply chains, through the regulation of prices, grid access, functioning of the markets and protection of final consumers. Creating a new logo for a public authority and designing its user manual means taking into account its strong institutional values and the trust that consumers place in its work. For this reason, the symbol of the Italian Republic has been included in the upper part of the logo, sustained by two lines of text that make up the name. In the lower part, three colored lines, symbolizing the three protected forms of energy, produce just as many waves that ideally underline the other elements. Electricity, gas and water meet in the same place and seem to arrange themselves tidily, ready to be dis-tributed. The concept of dynamism is strongly reaffirmed, through a hue that goes from light to dark for each of the three waves.

Advertising upcoming events is crucial for any museums, theaters and, more generally, for all cultural operators. In this field, billboards are among the most valuable, appealing and effective marketing tools. Mak-ing posters for important institutions means somehow becoming part of their history. Indeed, posters have always been the instruments through which Designers make the most of their creative capabilities, trying to convey clear and effective messages to the audiences.

The creative concept that character-izes the brochure has been devel-oped starting from the appreciation of sensorial suggestions, associated with natural resources. The sym-bol of the Spa is water, a beneficial element with healing properties. The environment and the natural scenery, that represent the landscape context of the place, evoke a state of peace and a sense of internal and exter-nal purity. Indeed, water and nature represent the two distinctive features

of the Wellness Centre that charac-terize the experience of beauty and comfort, nourishing the body and elevating the mind. Based on this conceptual premise, the graphic project encourages the visitor to enjoy the pleasure of discovery. All the graphic materials for the Casino de la Vallée have been designed with the aid of precious printing process-es, using fine papers, captivating splash pages, formats and colors that reflect all the above features.

Pompeii is undoubtedly one of the most famous archeological sites in the world. This unique city reproduc-es a ‘slice of life’ from the Roman Empire of 2000 years ago. Visiting those ruins encourages one to think about the eruption of Vesuvius and the consequences suffered by the inhabitants of Pompeii. Flames, lapilluses, explosions in the sky become black felt-tip pen signs that draw the contour of the volcano. At the bottom of the image, the writing Pompeii ideally takes the place of the ruins of the city.

Regions represent the cornerstone of the European Union: the goal of a united, cooperative, developed and strong Europe can only be achieved by reducing structural differences among European regions and promoting equal opportunities for citizens. This is why regional policies play a crucial role in ensuring an harmonious economic and social development of the Union. The Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy

is the “engine” of this growth: in fact, the most relevant investment policies of the European Union are implemented using structural funds. Therefore, it is crucial to raise European citizens’ awareness on DG Regio’s role and, consequently, on the function of structural funds. In fact, given their main objectives, structural funds do not only concern institutions and potential beneficiaries but, actually, the entire population of the Union.

Orbits music video

Beyond genres, new acoustic spaces.

Orbits is the new music project created by Ben Dover and Paolo Di Sabatino. Two music worlds, appar-ently far from each other, meet to form something new. Jazz and electronic music coexist and produce new acoustic spaces. The video features actress and pole dancer Valeria Bon-alume who, at first, appears tired and bored; she falls down, then gets back up. She would rather be anywhere else. The two spectators behind her are incredulous. Then a music starts playing, making the protagonist get her strength back and projecting her into a different situation, in which she is alone with the whirling movements of her dance. The woman’s sinuous dancing creates spirals and swirls that take her and those around her to a new galaxy, on an imaginary journey, making any worries and insecurities disappear. Everything changes, the dark background opens up, uncov-ering bright stars and distant worlds. The music stops playing. Valeria leaves with a smile on her face that wasn’t there before. There is no one around her now.
