It’s been an interesting year so far with the fluctuation in temperatures, and the winds that seem to blow 30 mph every day. I guess we always expect the unexpected in the Midwest! We had a great Spring breakfast meeting to start off the year March 20th at Mahoney as speaker Mary Niemiec, Associate VP for Distance Education and Director of the University of Nebraska Online Worldwide, enlightened many of the members on the avail- ability of online courses for everyone that wanted to improve their knowledge and/or wanted a degree. I was pleasantly surprised with the options an individual has from a single class to various degrees that you can earn pretty much from your own home. Next up is the Spring Dinner Meeting on May 15th at the Embassy Suites in LaVista with Bruce Ramge Director of the Nebraska De- partment of Insurance to discuss upcoming Nebraska Insurance legislation that should be very informative as it will impact all mem- bers. Please get your reservation ASAP to your company repre- sentative to attend. This should be a great meeting. We will finish up the summer, first, with a community service activ- ity to be announced. We will try and update everyone with whom, where, and when as soon as we have it lined up. It is a great ex- perience to be involved with your fellow LOMA members and give back to the community. Second, one of our best attended events, the Wine and Cheese at Soaring Wings Vineyard in Springfield, will be held on August 14. Please come and network with other mem- bers and enjoy a relaxing evening. I hope everyone has some great plans for the summer to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. Those who know me already will expect that I will spend some time on the golf course when I can. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Spring Dinner next week. On March 20, 2014 the LOMA Society of Nebraska held its Spring Breakfast Meet-ing at Mahoney State Park. There were 44 Society members in attendance. The Key Note Speaker was the University of Nebraska’s, Mary Neimiec. Mary is the Associate Vice President for Distance Education and Director of the University of Nebraska Online Worldwide. After guests enjoyed a hot breakfast, President, Steve McKern opened the meet-ing by drawing door prize winners. A donation in the amount of $202.00 was raised for the Food Bank for the Heartland from door prize raffle tickets! Steve then introduced all the Society officers and announced that applications for the scholarship were now being accepted. Following the opening, Vice President, Carrie Michelutti introduced the guest speaker, Mary Neimiec. Mary is in charge of the University of Nebraska’s online learning initiative, Online Worldwide. Created in 2010, NU Online Worldwide brings together the online programs offered by the campuses of the University of Nebraska. There are more than 100 accredited fully online programs spanning undergraduate through doctoral. Carrie explained that with more and more LOMA courses being offered online, she thought that Mary would be speaking on a rele-vant topic for the LOMA society.

Mary explained that online learning is very important in Nebraska where there is

sometimes little opportunity for “brick and mortar” classrooms in many parts of

Nebraska. Mary went over all the different types of online classrooms and the im-

portance of online learning. Mary explained that online classrooms allow for diver-

sification by bringing together students that would not traditionally be in the

same classroom due to geographical constraints. Additionally, Mary went over the

online course offerings the University has for those in the insurance industry.

Board Meeting

10:05 am – Board Meeting begins

Membership/Membership Drive Update

At the time of our Spring Breakfast, our membership was at 132. Assurity, Lincoln Financial and Allstate had

membership drive booths. Woodmen is trying to schedule a booth and Dell reps have been attending

manager meetings to promote the LOMA Society.

Could we do a survey of the people that didn’t renew to see why they didn’t?

Our Society has an email account set up through our website so Jennifer can use that instead of her direct

email when contacting folks.

Jennifer sent an email to all the new designees and invited them to the Society. Carrie will pull a list every

quarter and send an email inviting folks to the next event and thank those who attended the previous

event.

Jennifer will print out certificates of everyone who has signed up to be a member so far.

Keep in mind that we may be able to tap into banks with the new designation.

Volunteer Opportunities

In Lincoln, the Center for People in Need has been a good opportunity for us helping distribute food and other

items to needy families around Thanksgiving.

Need to get something set up in Omaha and try to get more communication sent out beforehand. An idea is

the Ronald McDonald House. We agreed that if any of our companies were doing an event, send a mes-

sage to the group, post it on our website and Facebook page.
