    letter !"#$ &'( )*+",

This month, were wrapping up the first full yearof The Lo-Downs print magazine with our firstspecial issue. In 2013, we brought you coverstories on a wide variety of topics, including acontroversial plan to build market-rateapartments on public housing property, thegrowing prominence of Lower East Side artgalleries, the battle to save a cherishedsynagogue on Norfolk Street and the historicdevelopment plan for the Seward Park site. Inthis, our 10th issue of the year, were debutingthe Best of the Lower East Side Awards, our firstannual food survey. For this project, readersvoted online, helping us to identify the toprestaurants in the neighborhood across nearlytwo dozen categories. It wasnt a scientificsurvey, but your opinions gave us really goodguidance about some of the eating establish-ments locals love. Using your responses as aguide, we set out to revisit old classics and tolearn more about some new and interestingarrivals. The results, contained in these pages, offer a little something for everyone. This is aDecember/January issue of the magazine. Weretaking a breather in the next few weeks and

preparing for another fascinating year on theLES. So until February, happy eating and happynew year, and thanks for reading.

    BEST KIDS

    RESTAURANT)*+,*-./ 01234*5

    Cafe Petisco189 E. Broadway

Some of our readers expressed strongopinions as to where kids should be dining. A fewexamples: Park Slope, the Upper West Side,Economy Candy and at home. In all seriousness, though, parents mentioned a wide variety ofplaces, including Schillers Liquor Bar, wherechildren eat free before 7 p.m. But the readerspick in this category was Cafe Petisco, the friendly

Mediterranean restaurant across from Seward Parkon East Broadway. The eatery has a diverse menu, offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and the staff isvery accommodating. Petisco isnt just a familyrestaurant; its a popular spot serving a part of thecommunity in which there are few full-servicedining options.

    BEST LATE-NIGHT

    RESTAURANT)*+,*-./ 01234*5

    The Meatball Shop84 Stanton St.

Tacos, pizza, crepes, burgers: these are themainstays of the Lower East Sides drunk foodrepertoire. In 2009, theMeatball Shopopened onStanton Street, in a location ideally suited tocapitalize on the booming LES market for alcohol-absorbing grub. As it turned out, the meatballsandwiches and entrees (not to mention ice creamsandwiches) are a significant cut above the usuallate-night fare. So its not too surprising that voterschose the Meatball Shop to satisfy their late nightcravings, even if youve got to elbow your way to atable or the bar.
