Our next General Meeting is this Monday, November 24th, at the
Livonia Civic Center Library starting at 7:00 PM.
There is NO General Meeting in December. The first meeting of
2015 will be Monday, January 26th.
Weekly Saturday Breakfasts continue throughout the year and
are held at Steve’s Family Restaurant, 40370 Five Mile Rd.,
Plymouth, MI 48170 (W. of Haggerty). We start arriving shortly
before 8:00 am when the doors open.
John Hopkins (K8YYZ) also coordinates our monthly “LARC in
the Park” outings on the second Saturday of each month, usually
after breakfast. We welcome ideas for indoor activities during the
Winter. Contact John, K8YYZ, with any suggestions you may
have.
We are pleased to be able to offer our club members, guests and
vendors the option to purchase memberships, event tickets, vend-
ing tables and more using our online store. You can get to the
store at: http://www.livoniaarc.com/larcstore/
Our Treasurer, Doris, is now accepting payment for LARC 2015
Annual Dues. Bring cash or check for $15 to our General Meeting
or pay online at our store (see above).
The LARC Night Out/Christmas Party was a great success!
Good food, good conversations, great door prizes. Check out the
pictures on pages 5 and 6. Many thanks to Doris (K8DXJ) and

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION BRIEFLY "HAM-LESS" AFTER
CREW MEMBERS RETURN TO EARTH
Page 2 November 2014 The Repeater
The only two radio amateurs on the International
Space Station (ISS) were among three crew members
who returned to Earth on November 10, and another
ham-astronaut won't arrive on board the ISS until later
this month. An exciting 2015 appears to be in store.
NASA Flight Engineer Reid Wiseman, KF5LKT,
and European Space Agency Astronaut Alexander
Gerst, KF5ONO, joined Expedition 41 Commander and
Russian Cosmonaut Max Suraev on the flight home
this week. Traveling in a Soyuz space capsule, the trio
touched down safely in Kazakhstan after some 6
months on the station. Wiseman and Gerst were active
on Amateur Radio during their time in orbit, handling
questions from curious Earthlings during Amateur Ra-
dio on the International Space Station (ARISS) educa-
tional contacts and, in Wiseman's case, his first ARRL
Field Day in
June -- an
activity he
discussed in
a recent
#askAstro
YouTube
post.
This was
the first mis-
sion for both
Wiseman
and Gerst.
While in
space, the
pair carried
out a spacewalk to relocate a failed pump module and
configure the station for upcoming additions. Wiseman
completed a second spacewalk with fellow NASA astro-
naut Barry Wilmore, now the ISS Expedition 42 Com-
mander.
According to ARISS, there will be no US Operation-
al Segment hams on the ISS until December 7, and the
ARISS Russian team will conduct any school contacts
in the interim. European Space Agency astronaut Sa-
mantha Cristoforetti, IZ0UDF, heads to the ISS on No-
vember 23. She will be the sole radio amateur on orbit
until next March. That's when Cosmonauts Gennady
Padalka, RN3DT, and Mikhail Kornienko, RN3BF --
both space veterans -- will arrive. A key research focus
during Expedition 41 was human health management
for long-duration space travel, as NASA and Roscosmos
prepare for Kornienko and NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly
to remain aboard the ISS for 1 year.
Several call signs are available for use on the ISS.
NASA astronauts use NA1SS, while Russian cosmo-
nauts operate under RS0ISS. Other call signs include
DP0ISS, OR4ISS, and IR0ISS, available for use by Eu-
ropean Space Agency astronauts. UK telecoms regula-
tor Ofcom recently issued the call sign GB1SS for as-
signment to UK space travelers while aboard the ISS.
NASA Astronaut Kjell Lindgren, KO5MOS, and
Japan Aero-
space Explo-
ration Agen-
cy (JAXA)
Astronaut
Kimiya Yui,
KG5BPH,
will head to
the ISS next
May. Astro-
nauts Tim
Kopra,
KE5UDN,
and Tim Peake, KG5BVI, will be part of a crew incre-
ment heading into space a year from now. Peake, who
is from the UK, may use the GB1SS call sign.
British pop singer Sarah Brightman is currently
scheduled to travel to the ISS in October 2015 for a 10-
day visit as a fare-paying "spaceflight participant." Her
website has adopted an otherworldly theme. While it is
not known if she will participate in any Amateur Radio
contacts during her short ISS stay, she apparently
would be eligible to do so using GB1SS.
ARISS has announced that the deadline is Decem-
ber 15 for schools and educational institutions and or-
ganizations -- formal and informal -- to submit pro-
posals to host an Amateur Radio contact with an ISS
crew member. ARISS is especially interested in arrang-
ing contact events that will draw large numbers of par-
ticipants and integrate the radio contact into a well-
developed educational plan. ARISS anticipates that the
ham radio contacts between students and the space sta-
tion will take place between May 1 and December 31,
2015. The ARRL website has more information.
Contact ARISS with any questions or for additional
information. NASA has posted more information on the
International Space Station and its crews.

Page 3 November 2014 The Repeater
Bruno (WA8DHP)
reported on the Ed-
mund Fitzgerald Spe-
cial Event at the
Dossin Great Lakes
Museum, which took
place on Saturday, No-
vember 8th. Twelve
members assisted Bruno in making 39 CW contacts and
195 on SSB. Doris, K8DXJ, then went home and made
95 more.
If any other LARC members operated from home
and made contacts for W8F, please bring your log to the
November 24th General Meeting for Bruno to confirm.
Bruno thanks all for the fine work on this special event.
A very cold job for the antenna team.
Tas (K8TAS) and John (N8DXR) take their turn at the W8F Phone station.
Alan (N8BTU) and Larry (K8MU) making many Phone contacts.
Mike (N8MR) and Rick (N8XI) take their turn, while Chuck (WV8A) supervises.
We did have visitors .
Page 4 November 2014 The Repeater
The older members of the Club are probably familiar
with Hedy Lamarr, an iconic actress from Hollywood’s
Golden Age. But, did you also know we can thank for de-
veloping Wi-Fi technology?
Born in Austria in 1914 Lamarr tried to defuse a po-
tential military threat during World War II. To prevent
remote-controlled torpedoes from being
hijacked, she helped develop an early ver-
sion of spread spectrum communication,
which is part of the basis for wireless
technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Lamarr, got her first taste of engi-
neering at the age of 18 when she married
Friedrich Mandl, an armaments manufac-
turer 14 years her senior. After divorcing
Mandl and moving to Hollywood to take
up acting, her passion for engineering
remained strong to the point that she set
up a room in her house complete with a drafting table and
wall of engineering reference books. Experimenting with
automated control of musical instruments with composer
George Antheil, they came up with the idea of “frequency
hopping.”
At the time, radio-controlled torpedoes could easily be
detected and jammed by broadcasting interference at the
frequency of the control signal, thereby causing the torpe-
do to go off course. Frequency hopping essentially served
to encrypt the control signal because it was impossible for
a target to scan and jam all of the frequencies.
Lamarr and Antheil were granted a patent for their
invention on August 11, 1942, but the US Navy had a
“Not Invented Here” policy and just stuffed her patent in
a file cabinet. No, Hedy Lemarr did NOT save the Navy
or help us win WWII. Her patent
was ignored until twenty years later
when the groundbreaking technolo-
gy was used on military ships dur-
ing a blockade of Cuba in 1962.
When Bell Labs discovered their
own spread spectrum, the patent
search discovered Lamarr’s work.
By then it was in the public domain,
and it cost nothing to include with
their own.
Unfortunately, Lamarr’s part in
its development has been largely overlooked and her ef-
forts weren’t recognized until almost three years before
she died in 2000 when the Electronic Frontier Founda-
tion gave her an award for her technological contribu-
tions. She passed away at the age of 85.
