We would like to thank all our staff, community members and parents who helped out during the UIL Academic Meet on Wednesday, December 3 rd . Thank you so much for all you do for our Elementary Campus. Now that the UIL Meet has passed, your child/ren will not be staying after school for UIL practices. Tutoring sessions are still being held after school until 4:30 p.m. Bus transportation is available. The band directors are working hard in organizing our Annual Elementary Christmas Program which has been scheduled on Thursday, December 18 th . Time will be announced in next week’s newsletter. Mrs. Dube & Mrs. Gonzales’ Pre Kinder News:

This week students learned about time, seasons, and weather. We read "What's the Weather?". We learned about the letter Ii and rhyming. In Math, students reviewed numbers 1-8 and were introduced to the number 9. We discussed types of weather and temperature. On Friday we read the fable: "The North Wind and the Sun". On December 10th, Pre-kinder/Headstart students will be going to Zavala County Bank to sing Christmas Carols. We will be sending more information out next week. ! Hear words: Have your child listen to words & identify its beginning sound. Telling you which letter the word starts with. Name foods at your thanksgiving dinner & have your child identify the beginning sound & letter.

Count: Ask your child to count how many food items are at the thanksgiving table or how many items are on their plate.

Ms. Escalante- Kinder Math & Science:

In math: for the next 5 school days students will develop numbers 11 –20. Continue subitizing, conservation, comparing numbers, using concrete and pictorial models, and using comparative language. Students will also learn to develop strategies to solve story problems by identifying key words and using the “part-part-whole” chart. Continue to practice adding and subtracting numerals and word problems, counting with TOUCHMATH through visuals, manipulatives and kinesthetic activities. In our daily board, students will review the calendar, counting 1-100, skip counting by 5s and 10s, counting backwards from 20-0, money, seasons of the year, and tally marks. In Science, for the next 10 school days, students will review natural resources of water and soil. Students will illustrate and communicate two ways of how water and soil are useful. Ms. Elrod Kinder Reading and Social Studies:

Ms. Elrod’s class has covered the letters l. o. g, h, t p, a, n, m, I, s, f, k, and r. Students are blending sounds to create words. Next week, we will

add the letter Bb. With the addition of each letter, we will continue to increase our decodable word bank. Each week gets more challenging,

especially now that we have consonant blends. From now on, students will have a decodable reading and spelling assessment at the end of the

week. Writing is an essential part of our phonics program. Several students are already reading decodable phonics books and library books and

are taking AR tests Our letters to Santa are posted out in the hallway. Parents are invited to come read their child’s letter.

Mrs. Howell:

The first grade math class will be moving into number relationships up to 99. The unit will address relationships and patterns in numbers including the sum of a multiple of 10 and a one-digit number, reciting numbers, skip counting, and numbers that are 10 more and 10 less than a given number. In science we will continue to identify and describe a variety of natural sources of water, including streams, lakes, and oceans. Mrs. Valdez

Students were busily working on their Flip Books for "Animals Building Homes" where students had to describe the order of events/ ideas in text, which are displayed in the classroom. In Saxon Phonics students continued to practice letter recognition, affixes, letter sounds and sight words. The lessons learned this week were vowel /e/ and /ee/ sound. Mrs. Lopez:

We have been furiously working on fractions! This week students worked on reading and following directions to color fractions of decorations on Christmas trees and create a winter wonderland street scene! Next week we will continue to work on fractions and identifying equal parts of a whole and sets of objects. In science we will continue to discuss fresh water and salt water as well as finish up our unit on rocks.

3rd and 4th graders practiced on non-fiction comprehension stories. Next week students will continue to work on their reading skills and strategies. Parents please help your child/ children study for their weekly spelling assessments.

3rd Grade Science - The students will continue reviewing and identifying the landforms with its name and characteristics. Modeling Landforms: Students will kinesthetically model the formation of four landforms. This is critical to their understanding of the processes that help to build up and wear down the landforms on Earth.

4th Grade Science - The students will continue investigating and conducting activities with complete and incomplete circuits.

3rd Grade - The students completed and took the assessments for Unit 6 - People Influence Communities: Heroes. Next week, they will describe how individuals, events, and ideas have changed communities, past and present. 4th Grade - Fourth graders finished and completed the test for Unit 6 - Revolution. Next week, they will identify leaders important to the founding of Texas as a republic and state including Jose Antonio Navarro, Sam Houston, Mirabeau Lamar, and Anson Jones.

Third Grade- Third graders are working with fractions. Please continue to practice multiplication facts. Fourth Grade- Students are working on adding and subtracting fractions. They are also finding equivalent fractions. Please continue to practice multiplication facts.

Students read and discussed the Fantasy story “The Big Race”. The target skill will be reaching conclusions. The target strategy will be for students to infer and predict. In Social Studies, students read and discussed, “The Land Around Us”.

5th /6th grade Math notes *5th grade students are completing Unit 6 : Fractions. *6th grade students are working on algebraic expressions. *Congratulations to all UIL participants. Great job in representing La Pryor Elementary.

5th Grade - Fifth grade will begin Unit 6 Lesson 1: Changes to the Earth’s Surface

In this lesson students will focus on three landforms, how they are formed, and where they are located in Texas.

6th Grade - Sixth grade will continue with Unit 6 Lesson 1: Energy Transformations

In this lesson they will be using a simple system and demonstrate energy transformations that occur within systems.

*Parents: If your child hasn’t brought a pack of (3”x5”) index cards, please make sure to bring it in as soon as possible. They

will be using them to write their Science Vocabulary and use it as a study guide throughout the year. Thank you for your

cooperation. Ms. E. Gomez:

5th Grade –We will continue to learn about the Road to Revolution. We will learn about the important figures, events and battles that lead to us become a free country. Please encourage your child to do their homework and to study for their tests. If they are not successful in passing their test(s) then they need to get their parent’s signature in order for them to correct it. Encourage your child to read on a daily basis as it will help in improving their comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, etc. The websites that your child can go to is ISTATION and Reading Plus. It would be great if your child can dedicate 30 minutes at least three times a week and or weekends. Make sure to also encourage your child to practice math and do the necessary steps to each equation as well. The websites that your child can go to is Think Through Math or Accelerated Math. It would also be great if your child can dedicate some time for these math programs as well. Let’s encourage our students to be responsible in all aspects of their education!!!! 6th Grade— We will continue to learn about South America. We will learn the countries, rivers, geographic landmarks, etc. We will be learning about their customs, population, educational systems, governments, etc. Students will be doing a power point presentation on the research that they will be doing on a specific country in South America. In P.E. classes students have been working on ball handling skills and we will continue for next few weeks. We

hope to have good future basketball students. Please make sure students wear running shoes for P.E. as for

our floors are very slippery and students can fall and get hurt.
