Message from the Principal

What another fabulous year we have had here at AISM! We have all been so busy that it has flown by.

So many units of inquiry, so many field trips, so much learning and so much fun. This time of year is always

bitter sweet because we say goodbye to many people.

Goodbye and good luck go to:

We hope your new schools value you as much as we do!

Have a safe, happy holiday everyone else – we‟ll see you in August.

If You Give a Student Some Homework

If you give a student some homework, they will ask you for a pencil. When they

see the pencil, it reminds them of a magic wand. The student will want to do a

magic trick. They will find their black magic hat. When they find their hat, they

say the magic word abracadabra. The bunny does not come out, so they go to

find a carrot. The carrot reminds the student of a pencil. When they find their

pencil, they remember that they have to do their homework!

To help us understand where our water

comes from and the process it goes

through to get to our taps, Grade 3 visited

the Pequenos Libombos Dam and the

Umbeluzi Water Treatment Plant. We

learned how the region of Maputo ensures

access to finite water resources for its

population. We were amazed at how

much water we use and the extensive

process necessary to treat it.

As part of our “Sharing the

Planet” unit, Grade 3 visited

Catembe. We learned about ferries,

harbors and ports, as well as

beaches. The students created

beautiful poetry using descriptive

language inspired by the sights

and sounds of the beach.

HEALTHWISE Following their research investigation into Health Care in

Mozambique, five Grade 5 girls put their resulting

proposal into action. They collected donations for Health

Bags, each made from capulana fabric and containing

soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste and a toilet roll, for

distribution to 30 children in a paediatric ward at the

Central Hospital.

Also included in the bag was a pamphlet on healthy

habits, e.g. how to wash hands, and the importance of

cleaning your teeth correctly.

Secondary School Colleen Fletcher Secondary Principal

The end of the year is such a turbulence of emotions. We are all exhausted and yet excited about travels

and the break, but mostly we are saddened by the inevitable farewells that we face when living abroad.

We say goodbye to several teachers on the secondary side and I wish them all the very best in their new

adventures. Tom and Donna, all the best in your new projects in Singapore and I know that all your many

years of experience will serve you well in curriculum development in Asia. Bob, we will miss your big voice

at every school event and we will miss your guitar-playing and singing on campus and boundless energy

in the science room and on stage. Christina, thanks for your absolute professionalism in the humanities

department and we wish you well in your posting back home in the Netherlands. I know that all your Afri-

can adventures will flavour your classes.

Henry, voted top and best and favourite teacher every year!!! There is never any room for any other

teacher to come close! Henry, your strength lies in the sincere relationships you build with all your stu-

dents, leading to trust and achievement. We cannot thank you enough as faculty and as parents for

what you have done for our children to learn to believe in themselves. We wish you well in your new ad-

ventures.

Angie, our own paparazzo and Facebook fiend! You have put us on the map with your insatiable com-

mitment to capturing every special moment on and off campus. We cannot even begin to envisage a

future at AISM without a marketing and publishing department thanks to your creative enthusiasm.

Thanks for 6 years of humour in the most stressful moments, your creativity in costume design and make-

up artistry that embellished more than 15 AISM shows and events. You are not leaving the continent but

we wish you well and hope you take a very special part of Africa with you.

Jacquie, where do we even begin? Ten years ago you started at AISM as a primary school teacher and

taught 3rd and 4th grade for 6 years. But if ever there was an opportunity to take to the stage or direct

others on it, you were there (who will ever forget your rendition of Marilyn Munroe?). Then four years

ago you moved across to the secondary school teaching drama and dance and you simply started to

soar. It is so evident that you teach to your passion and it is infectious. Your own further study in dance

enriched our programme, and who will ever forget the dances in Peter Pan, A Midsummer Night‟s

Dream, Oliver, Grease, and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, not to mention all the other performances

like CATS, The Highwayman, the Shakespeare Evening and this year‟s choreography workshops and per-

formances. We wish you all the very best in Australia, and I don‟t even have to tell you to keep a piece

of Africa in your heart, because you are all African.

To all of you ... Hamba Kahle (Go Well)

The Gr 9/10 Public Speaking Elective class presented their „Ted‟ style „talks‟ on the night of Monday 20th

May on the top floor of the Mabukwini Library to an audience of interested parents and faculty members.

The students spoke on a range of global issues and provided some solutions that every one of us can im-

plement.

Our budding orators researched topics that spoke to their hearts. We had Eduardo speaking on Obesity,

Yaara on The Beauty Business, Mathew on Poverty, Daniel on Child Abandonment, Yavnika on Maternal

Mortality of Women in Mozambique, Michaela on Water, Ammaarah on Over-

Fishing, Marcus on Human Trafficking, Stefan on

Rape, Sean on Poaching, Ethan on Gun Control, and

Eddie on Cultures and Traditions.

The students‟ preparation involved many hours of re-

search, planning, interviewing, drafting & and re-

drafting of content, ordering and re-ordering of slides,

citations and so much more. The journey was long

and arduous but the learning experience and end

result were most rewarding.

The talks had the audience riveted and often quite

disturbed. Daniel‟s take on Child Abandonment left

many with tears in their eyes. The evening ended with

Dr. Mary Jo Heatherington giving out the certificates

of completion of the Elective course.

GRADE 9 : THE MOCK TRIALS OF TOM ROBINSON

Gr 9 enthusiastically recreated the trial of Tom Robinson from the novel `To Kill a Mockingbird‟ as part of

their English inquiry into Truth and Justice. The trial came with a twist: while the characters and their stories

were consistent with the 1950‟s novel, the case was to be tried under Mozambican law in the present

time.

Each class held its own mock trial, with the special assistance of lawyer/parent, Pedro Couto, who sat as

the senior judge. Students threw themselves into the roles of the witnesses and lawyers, and the tension

ran high.

The balance between truth and justice was thoroughly investigated as each class returned a different

verdict: D block acquitted Tom Robinson and G block found him guilty. In the end, it came down to

which version of the `truth‟ was most convincing.

Many thanks to Mr Couto and his associate, Mr Pinto Basto, who helped to coach the `legal teams‟ and

thanks also to those parents who came in to watch, creating a convincing courtroom atmosphere.

JOB SHADOWING & INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS

Looking for something to do during the June/July break?

Why not ask a family friend or someone you know if you can do a “job shadow” at their place of em-

ployment or maybe an informational interview?

What is Job-Shadowing:

"Job shadowing is a work experience option where students learn about a job by walking through the

work day as a shadow to a competent worker. The job shadowing work experience is a temporary,

unpaid exposure to the workplace in an occupational area of interest to the student. Students witness

firsthand the work environment, employability and occupational skills in practice, the value of profes-

sional training and potential career options. Job shadowing is designed to increase career awareness,

help model student behavior through examples and reinforce in the student the link between class-

room learning and work requirements. Almost any workplace is a potential job shadowing site." Paris,

K., & Mason, S. (1995). Planning and Implementing Youth Apprenticeship and Work-Based Learning.

Madison, WI: University of Wisconsin, Center on Education and Work.

What is an Informational Interview?

The informational interview is an opportunity to learn about a career which interests you, by meeting

and talking with someone who is working professionally in that field. In a question-and-answer session,

you will learn first-hand about a job directly from someone who performs the tasks on a daily basis. Be

sure to make an appointment, dress appropriately, stick to a 20- or 30-minute time limit and keep your

questions clear and pertinent. Remember to send a brief note of thanks to your interviewee after-

wards.

You may be surprised at how different your dream job is in “real life”!

Have a great and productive holiday.

AISM Track and Field Invitational

AISM held its final track and field event of the school year on 25 May, competing against Trichardt, EPM,

Einstein School, and Emmanuel School. After six hours of competition only 39 points separated the top two

schools. Trichardt came out on top with 1734 points to AISM‟s 1695. AISM managed 48 gold medals on the

day - an outstanding effort.

U8, U10, U12 Soccer Tournament

Our final sports event of the school year was an U8, U10, and U12 soccer tournament. AISM hosted EPM,

MIS, Mafalala, and Inter Maputo. In the U8 and U12 categories, AISM tied for second place overall. Both

teams should be very proud of their excellent seasons. However, the highlight had to be the U10 team fin-

ishing an undefeated year in tournament play by winning all four games, including a nail-biting 4-2 victory

over Mafalala. Special congratulations to the U10 team on winning their fifth tournament this year.

Thanks To All Sports Volunteers

The AISM Sports and Activities Department wishes to thank all of the amazing parents, teachers, and stu-

dents who have helped out at our many activities this school year. We played sport almost every week-
