Senior Warden’s Message
can go. Budgeted expenses for 2018 are about $3,500 less than the 2017 budget. We do anticipate having some carry-over from 2017 to 2018, which should help buffer some of the net loss and the church does have money in savings that can be used to offset any other net losses. However, I think everyone would agree, we would rather not have to tap into savings for that.
As I see it, we only have a few op-tions (and these are not mutually exclusive, a combination of the three
would work): First would be to do some ag-gressive fund-raising. Second
would be for pledges to increase. Third would be for members of the congregation to volunteer in the church to offset work that we cur-rently pay for. This is our church, and collectively and individually, we must decide how we want to respond to this situation.
Aside from that, the Vestry would like to thank Buddy Hall, Susan Mills, and Misty Martinell for their help filling in as VPOD. You three were a life saver for us all! And please make sure Ray and Joe are in your prayers. Ray will be travelling back to Idaho for the holidays and, as mentioned, Joe is facing some significant health challenges.
Also, it is the time of year when we are looking to find the people who will be joining our Vestry next year. If you are interested, please speak to me or Pastor Susan. If someone from the Vestry approaches you, please open your heart and consider serving the church in that capacity. As the Senior Warden, I really would prefer that we can have more people in “the room where it happens”.
By Nick Burrows
As I was thinking about what to write this month, I was reminded of one of my favorite scenes from the musical Hamilton. The song is “The Room Where it Happens” and the scene is a dramatization of the Compromise of 1790. Aaron Burr is lamenting that Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton met behind closed doors to negotiate the agreement and only the three of them know how the compromise happened, because “no one else was in the room where it happened”.
With a current Vestry of five members, and considering that Ray Fury is currently in Alabama and Joe Cash is facing some significant health concerns, it sometimes feels like Kris, Jacquie and I are like Jefferson, Madison, and Hamilton – and that makes me uncomfortable – so I am going to use this space to fill the congregation in on some of what we have been discussing.
The biggest thing that we have been talking about lately is the church’s 2018 budget. The Vestry will be approving the final budget at our January meeting, but as of right now, the budget is showing a considerable net loss, which means the expenses of the church exceed the income we anticipate bringing in from pledges, regular giving, loose plate offerings, and fundraisers. Our budgeted expenses for 2018 are approximately $176,000. However, based on what the Finance Committee gave the Vestry, we only anticipate operating income of about $158,000, which means we need to make up about $18,000.
The Vestry feels like we already have minimized expenses as low as they

December Outreach: The Angel Tree, a ministry of St. Vincent DePaul Society’s Christmas basket program, has been part of our St. Luke’s outreach for 20 years! This congregation has repeatedly stepped up to support families who are struggling and show them God’s love and compassion. Thank you so much!
This year we continue in that tradition. St. Luke’s is again participating with St. Vincent DePaul Society’s Christmas Basket program by sponsoring 50 “angel tag” children. St. Vincent DePaul Society makes sure each of these children receive two gifts – a practical item such as clothing and a “wish” item such as a toy or something of special interest to the child. Many children wish for bikes – some are purchased and donated by elves like you and some are donated by Bill’s Bike Shop.
This year, our Angel Tree is located outside of the church office. If you can help fill these wishes, please take a tag, purchase a gift, and return the gift with the tag firmly attached (unwrapped, but boxed if possible) to the church by December 10th. There are suggestions on the tag to help you shop – however, whatever you can provide will be appreciated. Even if you can only fulfill part of the wishes on the tag, you will have helped make Christmas brighter for a child.
Please contact Angie Lee (208 521 6964) if you have any questions.
Merry Christmas.

Make a Joyful Noise The Advent and Christmas season is upon us and our music programs at St. Luke's are busily preparing. We have a choir, a bell choir and a contemporary music group all practicing for Sundays in Advent, the Advent Lessons and Carols service, Christmas services, and Epiphany.
This is a great time to try out one of these groups - even if you just want to participate during the holiday season. If you are interest-ed, contact the church office for rehearsal times and more details or call Angie Lee (208 521 6964). Your talents are our treasure!
Christmas flowers If you would like to donate toward the Christmas flowers, please complete the insert in the Sunday bulletins or send your donation to the church office.
All donations and dedications must be received by Wednesday, Dec. 19. Remember to mark your check “Christmas flowers” and let us know if you have a dedication (in memory of, in celebration of, etc.)

The 2018 liturgical calendars have arrived! These are more than just calendars! Did you know that on the back of each month they list the appointed readings for each Sunday, as well as other feast and holy days?
Did you know that there is a reason that some days are colored differ-ent than others? (The answer and code to the colors is listed on the back of the calendar)
Did you know that you can get a copy of this cal-endar just by picking one up in the Parish Hall or coming into the office? Donations of $3-5 are suggested to cover costs. Stop by and pick yours up today!
Listening For God Advent Quiet Day 2017 By Cher Stone
Please join us on Dec. 16, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. for an Advent Quiet Day. Our theme is Celtic Spirituality and each activity will have some of those options, although if you have other ideas, no problem. We will have the church as a total sacred space for you to pray, read, paint or write as the spirit moves you. We will keep the space quiet and accessible. We will have designated areas for each quiet activity and there will be no child care so as to maintain the quiet. A light lunch of soup and bread will be offered for your nourishment of the body while feeding your soul. This is a safe and sacred time of listening, of letting go and of absorbing those experiences that only come of silence and openness.
Please put this on your calendar for Advent, a gift just for you!

The St. Luke’s Prayer Chain
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will,
he hears us.” 1 John 5:14
The St. Luke’s Prayer Chain is made up of church members who are called to the ministry of prayer. Any member of the Prayer Chain may be called to initiate a “prayer request.” This request is then passed along the chain until it returns to the member who received the call. (If one member is unavailable to receive the call, Prayer Chain members will call the following person on the list.) The Prayer Chain members will keep all prayer requests confidential. December 2017
Thank you to those who helped with November hospitality: Megan Dodd, Patti Sherlock, Sandy Thomsen, Lonnie Martinell and everyone who assisted with the all-church potluck on November 5.
Thank you to everyone who helped with everything and anything pertaining to the Bishop’s visit on November 5th!. What a wonderful day.
Thank you to everyone who has turned in their pledge card for 2018. Having these helps us present a better 2018 budget at our annual meeting.
Thank you to everyone who assisted with our November Outreach, especially Kelli Marshall, and everyone who adopted a box, donated food, money or time, or moved and moved again the boxes in the Parish Hall. This amazing project brings so many people in our community together: our parishioners, schools, athletes, other churches and wards, students doing community service, a business owner who found he has 220 loaves of bread that needed to be donated, and the list just goes on and on. Our November Outreach provided Thanksgiving dinners to over 325 families! Our Turkey Boxes, well , really Kelli, were featured on Channel 8 and on East Idaho News online. As most of you know, Kelli’s
father, Clyde Toole, passed away a few days before the Turkey Box pick-up day, and the generosity of every-one who stopped by to help, comfort, and work was amazing. Kelli told us about a woman who came in with a Turkey Box she had adopted and she told Kelli that several years ago she was recipient of one our of boxes and it was her time to give back. Hers is not the only story like this. And many of the people who received a Thanksgiving dinner were so emotional and overwhelmed at the generosity of others that it brought us to tears.
All the “extra” food was given to the Idaho Falls Community Food Basket.
