PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Selective High School applications The application process for selective high school placement in Year 7 in 2021 has been open from 9am

on 8 October 2019 (last Tuesday of the holidays). There is only the online option available to apply, from this year there will be no more paper applications.

Application information booklets will be distributed to all intending applicants, and promotional postcards with the website address will also be distributed as now, all applicants have to apply online. Just ask at the office for an information booklet about the process. It is certainly easier to apply online if you have internet access, your own email address and a printer but you only have to submit one application per student. A common reason for duplicates is that parents realise after submitting their applications that they have made an error and they complete another application for the same student. If you have made an error in your application, you can email the Unit at [email protected] to have any information corrected and then you do not need to complete a duplicate application. If you need to make alterations, please ring the Selective High School unit or see Mr. Lewis. The online application can be found using this link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 and more information can be found by using this link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 All students seeking placement in a selective high school will be required to sit the Selective High School Placement Test on Thursday 12 March 2020. Parents applying online will need to lodge their applications by Monday 11 November 2019.

High absences – Start of Term 4 It was noticed by myself and a lot of teachers, that there were a lot of students away on the first Monday back for Term 4. Many parents used the excuse “we thought it was a pupil free day”. Considering I advertised that it wasn’t a pupil free day in our newsletter and online on our website and Facebook pages, as well as the final K-6 assembly in the last week, I find this to be unacceptable. This shouldn’t happen ! We are trying very hard to improve the skills, understandings and attitudes of each and every student, but when things like this happen, I feel the parents community aren’t supporting us as well as they can. At the same, our attendance to school data could be a lot better ! Please think very carefully as to why your child is missing school and if you are taking a trip overseas, how long your child will be absent from school and how much learning they will missing. We strongly

recommend against taking long trips or days off for erroneous reasons. Being at school is very important !

Enrol now for Kindergarten 2020 Does your preschool child turn 5 years of age before 31 July 2020 ? Have you enrolled your child at Lidcombe Public School for next year ? Now is the time to fill in your application. Please call into the office for an enrolment form as soon as convenient or arrange for one to be sent home with an older brother or sister.

Our 2019 Kindergarten Transition program has changed dramatically and this will be the fourth year of its implementation. We have begun our transition days in Term 4, running from 9.00am to 11.00am in the mornings. We still have 6 sessions left on the following days:-

Thursday 31 October 2019

Thursday 7 November 2019

Thursday 14 November 2019

Thursday 21 November 2019

Thursday 28 November 2019

Thursday 5 December 2019

There will be a number of great activities for your child and you as their parent that will not only strengthen your bond, but also familiarise and build confidence in your child about their classrooms, teachers and other students.

If you have already completed an Application for Enrolment form for your Kindergarten child you will automatically receive further details about these sessions as they become available. If you would like to read some general information about enrolling in a NSW public school please refer to the Department of Education and Training website link:- www.schools.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/gotoschool/enrolment/detsef.pdf

Kindergarten students will start school on Wednesday 5 February 2020. Of course, parents and Kindergarten students will be called in before that for their Best Start Interview – times to be announced.

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. These awards have been running for over 3 years now. Our Week 1 recipients were:- Muhammad Malas (3M), Liam Garner (4K), Salaheddine Zreika (3T) and Aliza Nazir (3/4B). Our Week 2 recipients were:- Jireh Fanene (4L), Andrew Tran (5G), Zammir Syed (6A), Kingsley Tieu (3T) and Jun Woo Lee (3M).

Well done students !

Great work ! The best part of my week is when students come to visit me in the office to show me outstanding work. In these last two weeks, it hasn’t been students coming to see me in the office, it has been out and about that they have done their best, and my “great work” commendation extends beyond the students towards a parent this newsletter. Firstly, as posted on Facebook, congratulations to both Ethan Symes and Elizabeth Soliola, both will be going to the State PSSA Athletics Championships in Week 4, representing Sydney West, Ethan for Long Jump and Elizabeth for Discus and Shot Put. Ethan was also named Age Champion for the 12/13 year old boys for the Sydney West PSSA Championships, a remarkable feat in itself – well done to both of you.

In fact, well done to every student from Lidcombe that went to the Sydney West Athletics Championships, your efforts, behaviour and determination were all outstanding. Also shared on Facebook, were the feats of this remarkable woman, Julie Leask, a former parent of our school (Billy and Maddie were her children). Now a professor, she was just named as the Financial Review’s 2019 Woman of Influence for her outstanding work on advocating for immunisation rates to improve. I was stoked to see this news on the Channel 9’s Today Show, where she was being interviewed. Well done Julie – we are so proud of you as well !

Unwanted visitors It seems as though from time to time, we have a number of people who come into the school. If it happens before or after school, of course, make sure you inform me or at the very least, inform the office of something you have witnessed or are not happy about. Sometimes, we have people come in on the weekends or over the holidays too. Most of these people do come in and use the playgrounds in the right way, but others are only interested in causing damage or vandalising our property. If you notice any such behaviour going on within our school, could you consider ringing the school security unit to report suspicious activity on their 24-hour hotline number, 1300 880 021. Your assistance here is greatly appreciated to keep our school looking beautiful and functional for our wonderful students.

Farewell We don’t normally say farewell to families as they leave our school to start other chapters in their lives, but I feel I need to on this occasion, as Janine Duchstein has not only been an ardent supporter of our school, she has worked very hard within the P&C structure to assist wherever needed. She brought in a lovely surprise for the staff, pictured below, but couldn’t stay due to being overcome with emotions. We wish Sydney (5B), Josh (KK) and the whole family a wonderful next chapter in Minto and hope they keep in touch with us. All the best !

New seated area – Block D I hope our whole school community are enjoying our new seated area outside Block D. the area will serve many purposes, mainly as outdoor learning environments for the students and their teachers, but also as a place for parents to sit and wait for their children of an afternoon. It has long worried me, the bottleneck that exists down the pathway, so to have that pressure alleviated must be a relief to all, certainly me. We still have two, low lying circular

table/seats to be installed but it certainly is a breath of fresh air to see this area finally utilised.

Stage 3 Canberra Camp Well done to the nearly 150 students who went to Canberra and impressed everyone they met with their outstanding behaviour, manners, role modelling and respect. After a little bit of a slow start, the students were truly wonderful and allowed themselves the opportunity to learn and grow in what always is a fantastic learning experience. Thank you to Mrs. Pant (our fabulous camp organiser), Mrs Matthews, Mrs James, Miss Davies, Miss Hendy, Miss An, Miss Fisher and Mr Sage for giving up their personal time to go on camp with the students.

Our students have been given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. As a result, the excursion was $20 because of the Government’s Parliament and

Civics Education Rebate program. We appreciate their assistance.

Make Up ?? For school ???? Just to be absolutely clear, our school uniform policy does not outline or advocate the use of make up on a student’s face at school. Lately, I have noticed Year 6 girls in particular, coming to school with make up on. This practice needs to stop now. There is plenty of time for that sort of stuff when they are much older. As the father of two girls myself, I have never allowed (or allow, as one is still in year 9) my girls to go to school with make up on.

Enrolments 2020 We still have a term to go before we end 2019, but now it is time to start thinking about enrolments for 2020, especially Kindergarten. Each year, a number of families approach the school for an “out of area” enrolment for their child to start Kindergarten. I am absolutely committed to ensuring all of our “in area” students and siblings are catered for before considering “out of area” applications. At this stage, we have 128 Kindergarten students on the books for 2020 – we may even reach 160 ! The number of “out of area” applications we receive each year continues to confirm the wonderful reputation our school enjoys in the community.

Newsletter All newsletters are emailed to our families. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage. We hope many of our families take up this option in the future. Thank you for taking up this option and saving just that little bit more of our environment.

Parking around the school Unfortunately, I must stress this particular point again. The car parking around the school is at an absolute premium, I get that, really I do. But that doesn’t excuse anyone out there being unsafe in their cars. Quite a few parents have been seen parking in our grounds or behaving in an unsafe manner outside the school, (mostly parents that know the rules !) , double parking, speeding, letting children out of the right hand side of the car, mainly down near Mills St East and Gillivers Lane – you are seriously compromising the safety of the students ! People have even been seen to let children out of the car whilst on the pedestrian crossing ! With parking rangers coming out just about everyday, that could actually end up being a very expensive mistake ! Please ensure you drop your child(ren) off outside the school in a safe manner or walk you children to and from school using the pedestrian access points, not through the car park. Other parents have now complained about our parents double parking in Doodson Ave and Mills St., or even parking over resident’s driveways. What is happening is extremely dangerous and stupid, with students getting out of cars from the wrong side of the car into oncoming traffic. Please do not double park to let your children out. It is against the law and I have no problem contacting the authorities and giving them your license plate number if you are doing the wrong thing out there. We now have a dedicated police officer appointed to oversee this situation, so if you are doing the wrong thing, you will be fined ! I would really appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Principal

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).

How much fun are our Special Ed students having at their rehearsals for the D’Arts School Spectacular to be held on 22 and 23 November at Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney Olympic Park. The Schools Spectacular is an iconic cultural event, unequalled in the world. With a 2700 voice choir, 2300 diverse dancers, an 80-piece symphony orchestra, a world-class stage band and a vast number of outstanding solo performers, the Schools Spectacular is unparalleled in the world in terms of sheer size, scale and scope. In fact, this world-class performance is a Guinness World Record holder! Showcasing incredible talent of all ages from public schools in all regions of NSW, this is a not-to-be-missed event. In 2019, the Schools Spectacular celebrates some of the greatest music, theatrical shows, stories and lessons of all time, performed by some of the most remarkable young Australians you’ll ever see. If you are interested in purchasing tickets for one of the performances (2 on Friday and 2 on Saturday) please go to https://premier.ticketek.com.au/shows/show.aspx?sh=SCHLSPEC19&v=SSD. Prices start at $35 up to $59. There is also an option for a family ticket. For those parents whose children are taking part, a note regarding transport and tickets will come home next Monday.

* Just a reminder to parents that they are not permitted to park on school premises at any time. * When exiting Mills Street of a morning or afternoon, please remember to put your indicator on to show whether you are turning left or right. * PLEASE do not park illegally, we know you are ‘just dropping your child off and won’t be long’ but you are endangering other children by your selfishness.

We are seeing more and more children come to the office asking for food. We are more than happy to make a sandwich for a child that has forgotten their lunch and we can’t contact a parent. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to provide sandwiches for the children who haven’t brought enough food in. Children are very active and need plenty of healthy food to keep them going through the busy school day. Please ensure that you send Crunch and Sip and food for Break 1 and Break 2 each day. There’s some great ideas here for Crunch and Sip - https://keepcalmgetorganised.com.au/crunch-sip-ideas/

Check out https://theorganisedhousewife.com.au/lunchbox-ideas/one-week-healthy-lunchbox-ideas-kids/ for some great ideas for the lunchbox.

P & C Meetings for this term will be held on the following dates:

Monday evening, 11 November – 7pm - Staffroom Tuesday morning, 10 December – 9.15am – Lidbury Hall

All welcome!

Just a reminder that PSSA, STEM and Dance2bfit fees should now have been finalised. Please note that if fees are not paid, students will be unable to take part in the activities until payment is received. Should you be having difficulty

paying any of these fees, please see Julie in the office.

The Uniform Shop will be trialling the sale of “Excursion Bags”. These will be royal blue with the school logo screen printed in white on the front. There will also be a panel for your child’s name. More often than not we ask the children not to bring their school bags on excursions and carnival days and instead bring their food and drinks in a plastic bag. In the interests of the environment these bags will be reusable and able to be used right through primary school. These will be available for sale shortly for the small price of $10.

If you would like to preorder one, please fill out the form below and return to the office with the money, as soon as possible.
