The Appeal raised over $124,000, which was approximately $12,000 more than budgeted. Donations from our community are crucial to the Library’s operation. They make up almost a third of the yearly cost of operating the Library. Funding from local towns provides approximately a fifth of the operating budget. Without your help and that of many other individuals from our year ‘round and summer community our Library could not offer all of its wonderful services. Thank you for your continuing support of our special Library. Annual Plant Sale Despite the crunchy snow and the threat of a major winter storm this weekend we have begun to plan for our Annual Plant Sale. This year the sale will take place on the morning of Saturday, May 25 th . As always, we depend on local gardeners and garden owners to supply most of the plants that will be placed on sale. As you start your vegetable and flower seed trays (I hope to plant my onion seeds tomorrow with perennial flower seeds to be started soon as well) please consider planting a few extra six packs for the Plant Sale. As the weather warms up think, too, about potting up and donating your perennial flower and soft fruit divisions. As always, we will have a supply of pots in the Library shed. Must See Movie Series Join us Thursday, March 14, 7-9pm, for Day of Wine and Roses (1962). Joe Clay (Jack Lemmon), a promising adman, meets his future wife Kirsten (Lee Remick) at a party. Once married, the pressures of his business lead Joe to seek solace in liquor. Kirsten joins him in his nocturnal drinking sessions, and before long both are confirmed alcoholics. After several frightening episodes, Joe is able to shake the habit but Kirsten finds it impossible to get through the day without liquor. The two split up, although Joe clings to the hope that someday he and Kirsten will be reunited, if for no reason other than the sake of their young daughter.

Play Reading Group Join us Wednesday, March 20, 6:30-9pm. Talley's Folly (1979) is the story of one night in the lives of two unlikely sweethearts, Matt Friedman and Sally Talley. The one-act play takes place in a dilapidated boathouse on the Talley farm in Missouri, the Fourth of July, 1944. While on vacation the previous summer, Matt met Sally and has sent her a letter every day since. Though the single reply from Sally gave him no hope for romantic encouragement, he has bravely returned to ask her to marry him. Eventually, the couple begins to reminisce about the night they met and the time they spent together.Matt takes it as a positive sign that she has changed into a nice dress before coming to see him tonight. Sally's protests do not match her behavior. She is the most mysterious and intriguing girl he has ever met and he determined quite a while ago to make her his wife. Tally’s Folly won the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Lanford Wilson (April 13, 1937 – March 24, 2011) was an American playwright who helped to advance the Off-Off-Broadway theater movement, producing his earliest plays in New York at the Caffe Cino in 1964.[1] He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1980 and was elected in 2001 to the Theater Hall of Fame. In 2004, Wilson was

He was nominated for three Tony Awards and has won a Drama Desk Award and an Obie Award. The Blue Hill Public Library Play Reading Group welcomes inexperienced and experienced readers alike. The only criterion is the love of plays and the joy of reading them aloud among like-minded theater fans. Art Adventures Program Explore Japanese “haiga” on Thursday,

March 28th at 7pm. Haiga is the Japanese word for the combination on a paper or scroll of haiku poetry and “ga” (painting). The poem is composed of 3 lines with 5, 7, then 5 syllables each and usually includes a nature or seasonal word that the painting

illustrates. Frederica Marshall will create haiga and then lead audience members in making their own haiga on prepared cylindrical surfaces. Marshall studied painting, pottery, poetry and calligraphy during her 28 year stay in Japan. Contact Margret Baldwin at the library and see the Events Calendar listings on the library website to learn more. About this program, “Art Adventures,” a monthly series funded by Friends of the Blue Hill Library, that began February 28. This 8-month series will spotlight a variety of visual and performing arts from jazz and painting to photography and even tattoo art. Each program will be at 7pm on the 4th Thursday of the month (except for August when it will be the 2nd Thursday). Audience participation will be part of every program from writing haiku poetry to drawing portraits from a live model. Everyone attending an event will receive a list of relevant library resources including books, CD/DVDs and other topical materials.
