Dear Fellow Lions:

As the school year comes to a close, I would like to take a

moment to thank all those who volunteered their time, money,

and services to Liberty High School. Everyone here is so

appreciative of all of the various booster organizations that

help us provide an excellent education to our students.

Parent and community support is a vital ingredient of our success.

We are grateful for the long hours you put in working snack

bars, driving students, washing cars, baking cookies, hauling equipment, selling tickets, buying

spirit items, and in general going above and beyond the call of duty.

One of the great aspects of Liberty High School is the strong sense of history here.

All of us understand that we walk in pathways that were paved by those who came here

long before us. Our Scholarship Program provides over $100,000 each year to very deserving

seniors. Those funds are donated by parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, business

owners, and alumni from LHS who wish to help the next generation in their transition to

post-secondary life.

In addition, teachers also spend many hours outside of the classroom tutoring students,

attending sporting activities and other extracurricular events, and in evening and weekend study

sessions preparing students for exams. They come in before school to help students who have

missed class for sports or other activities.

Our students themselves have made many donations. Canned food drives, clothing drives,

tutoring, volunteering for local charities, helping at elementary schools, blood drives, raising

money in the memory of classmates who have died, and participating in Relay for Life are all

examples of ways in which our students give back to their community.

We practice charity. We give back to our community. We are neighbors and friends.

We invest in our future. We are a family.

We are Liberty High School.

INSIDE THIS

ISSUE On April 5, 2013 at the Brentwood Community Center, the Liberty Union H.S.

District awarded certificates of Reclassification to 45 Liberty students who

were formerly considered English Learners. In all 101 students from across the

District were honored.

Parents, students, friends, staff and District personnel were in attendance when

each student was recognized for this outstanding achievement. To earn this

award an English Learner must score a level 4 or 5 on the State CELDT test,

must earn C’s or better in all core subjects for the grading period, and must

score a 325 or higher on the Star Test in English Language Arts OR pass the

English Language Arts portion of the CAHSEE. When all of these criteria are

met, a student is reclassified as English fluent and truly bilingual.

After the awards ceremony, those attending enjoyed light refreshments and

took many pictures to commemorate the event. We hope this will be the first

of many such annual celebrations to honor our Reclassified students.

Congratulations to the 255

students who received 361

Achievement Awards for grades

9th - 12th on May 20th. Awards

were given out from fifteen

departments for Most Improved

and Most Outstanding. Other

honors included 20 President

Education Awards from President

Obama, Top 10 students, students

with 4.0 and above , US Maine

Corps Distinguished Athletic

Award, U.S. Marine Corps

Distinguished Musical Excellence

Award, U.S .Army Reserve Award,

U.S. Air Force Math Award,

U.S. Army Reserve Science Award.

Also honored were the Boy’s &

Announcing New Athletic Director

V O L U M E 2 0 1 3 I S S U E 4

Liberty High School is pleased to

announce the new Athletic Director for

the 2013-2014 school year.

“I am honored to be selected as the Athletic

Director starting our 2013-2014 school year,

replacing John Ambrose after 9 years of dedicated service.

We are planning to have a preseason parent meeting for each

of our Fall, Winter, and Spring sports seasons. This will be a

great opportunity to receive important information about

eligibility, our LHS Athletics Boosters, post-secondary athletic

opportunities, and to meet our coaches.

The Fall Athletics Parent meeting will take place in the first

couple of weeks of school. The specific date and time will be

communicated in August. Have a great summer!"

- Curtis Cunningham, Athletic Director, 2013-2014

Summer Reading Help your student be prepared for school next year by

encouraging him/her to read for pleasure this summer.

Just 15 minutes per day adds up to about 31,500

words per week, and studies show that for every

100,000 words the reader’s vocabulary grows by 50%.

All good reasons, but the best one is that it is fun! The

library has a list of titles that the students are enjoying.

Encourage your student to stop by and pick up one.

GOOD TITLES:

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson. Before Wendy

came into Peter Pan’s life there was Tiger Lily.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jessie Andrews.

Greg and Earl are forced to spend time with a

classmate recently diagnosed with Leukemia. Will

their lives change for the better or stay the same

The Diviners by Libba Bray. New age, old magic.

Call the Shots by Don Calame. Sean, Matt and Coop

try to make a low budget horror film.

Butterfly Clues by Kate Ellison. Obsessive compulsive

Disorder is not all Lo must deal with when she

accidentally witnesses a murder.

Scarlet by A. C. Goughen. Scarlet, a spunky lady-thief,

had made a home in Sherwood Forest with Robin

Hood and his bank of thieves, but a face from the past

may put her forest life and people she loves in

jeopardy.

Every Day by David Levithan. How can love survive if

each day you wake up as a different person?

Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Cyborg Cinder, a mechanic

in the chaotic street market of New Beijing,

threatened by disease and aliens, meets Prince Kai

when he brings a beloved robot in for repair.

Dodger by Terry Pratchet. Dodger is the

canniest cove in all of London, scheming with

Dickens, glad-handing Disraeli, and even getting

the upper hand over Sweeney Todd in his quest

to protect an anonymous girl.

Academy Name Change The Arts and Humanities Academy (AHA) is officially changing

its name starting with the 2013/14 school year. We will now

be PADA, the Public Art and Design Academy! The academy

feels that this name more accurately reflects our mission and

purpose. Our students work for 3 years to learn how to be an

artist capable of creating a work of art for a public space. Our

seniors work directly with the city of Brentwood to design and

create a public work of art. Check out this year’s Electric

Utility Boxes they have painted in the downtown area!

ROP Student of Excellence Award Anastasiya DeWolf was awarded the Contra Costa County Student of Excellence award in ROP Desktop Publishing. She received a scholarship and plaques and the annual Contra Costa County ROP Student Excellence Award at the Celebration on May 9, 2013. Students are recognized in a variety of categories. The process began with a nomination from her ROP Desktop Publishing Teacher, Sharon Johnson. In this process, the student writes an essay and the teacher submits a letter of recommendation. A panel of county industry partners selects the winner for each category based on the essay and teacher recommendation. Each winner has a picture and summary printed in a program. The following is what was written for Anastasiya:

Anastasiya’s work ethic is beyond compare and she has perfect attendance. She is a member of the Business and Technology Academy and will complete all requirements for certification before she graduates in 2014. She has the ability to follow directions and works wonderfully by herself and in a team. She seeks out “real assignments” which are documents Liberty teachers and staff members request with very little information provided about what they want for the final product. She creates documents and publications that are far superior than the requestor dreamed. Anastasiya plans to major in Business Administration with a minor in accounting and graphic design.

Parents of Migrant Education Students, We wanted to share with you how our school year 2012-2013 ended. During Spring break, we continued with our tutoring program and we had Two University Excursions. We visited St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA and National Hispanic University in San Jose. CSU Hayward was visited and provided information on several different post-secondary institutions as well as vocational schools and financial assistance resources. All three events provided exposure to post-secondary education to Migrant students and parents in attendance. We will also be having two fun learning outdoor education programs during summer. One is the Inter-Act Camping trip and the Mini-Corps Camping trip. For our summer one week trip to Washington D.C. (Close-UP ) program we will be sending, Junior, Magaly Arias from Liberty HS and Junior, Ana Celaya from Freedom HS. - Thanks and see you all next school year
