Giving thanks … It is a tradition at our home to go around the table before we eat our Thanksgiving meal and have each family member or guest say what they are thankful for. It’s often the children who come up with the most profound things to be truly thankful for. Just a few of the many things that I am most thankful for re: Liberty and the PTA are listed below: • Truly Terrific Teachers. The kindness and top-notch quality of our Liberty teachers, administrators and staff shines through over and over again. From helping our children learn and grow on a daily basis to stepping up to volunteer for PTA (in big numbers and often), it is clear we have teachers that go above and beyond. And it is appreciated! • “Joiners.” The parents & teachers who “joined” PTA in record numbers! • “Planners” and “the Clean-up Crew.” Those who step up to help plan and execute our large Events and lead our Committees and those who “stay after” and make sure we have returned the school to “as good as or better than we found it” are individuals who always put a smile on my face. Treasurer’s Report by Lisa Teetz lisateetz@verizon.net Hello Liberty Families! It has been a fantastic month financially for the PTA. We have brought in over $7500 already in membership dues, of which about 70% stays right here at Liberty. Fall Fest was a huge success and we raised over $2700! We are wrapping up the sales from the fall cookie fundraiser and still tallying the profits, but have already deposited over $3,200 in direct donations alone. These funds will allow us to continue to support the many activities and classroom needs at Liberty throughout the year. Please remember to take part in the many dining nights we have throughout the year at various locations throughout the town. The PTA received $320 in profit from 2 dining nights in September

at Kule-Yos! On the horizon is the Stone Ridge 5K, which is 100% profit for the PTA and Bingo night in early November. Keep coming out to support the PTA events! Membership Report We are pleased to report our current membership stands at approximately 750+ members. This exceeds our goal of a 5% increase in membership from last year! This is just AWESOME! We continue to wish, dream and hope for 100% PTA membership (1 parent/teacher for each child). Rub  that  lucky  rabbit’s  foot  and  come  on  out  for  Bingo!    Doors  Open  @  6:30pm  on  Friday,  November  9th.    1st  game  starts  @  7pm  in  the  Gym.    Admission/Bingo  Packets  are  $5  for  Students  and  PTA  Members  (adults).    $15  for  not-­‐yet  PTA  Members    (and  you  may  join  PTA  if  you  wish).    We  play  five  games  of  Bingo,  with  each  “sheet”  containing  three  Bingo  cards.        There  will  be  20  “grand”  prizes!    Each  grand  prize  consists  of  a  Bingo  Basket  filled  with  similar  prizes  (e.g.  bubbles,  balls,  balloon,  kazoo,  water  bottle,  trinkets,  Kule-­‐Yo’s  gift  card  +).    We  have  approximately  2  to  4  “big”  winners  each  game,  and  then  continue  to  call  the  game  for  “treasure  chest”  prizes  for  additional  winners.    

The  last  game  is  “black  out”  and  we  play  until  all  students/children  have  won  a  prize  from  the  treasure  chest.    We  need  10+  volunteers  for  each  1  hr.  shift  from  6:30-­‐7:30pm  and  7:30-­‐8:30pm  and  we  need  “all  hands  on  deck”  to  help  with  clean-­‐up.    To  volunteer,  e-­‐mail  our  Volunteer  Coordinator  Anaheeta  Minwalla  at  acminwalla@verizon.net  or  fill  out  this  form  and  return  via  backpack.

We are looking for people to step up and lead the following areas: • After School Enrichment/ASE We need a Lead who can solicit and coordinate third-party vendors to provide ASE programs for Liberty in the Spring. If we have no Lead, we will have no additional ASE programs. • Dads Club/Eagle Eye Program We are seeking a Dad to work with Mrs. Linda Textoris, Administration Intern, to lead the Dads Club and “new” Eagle Eye Program at Liberty. This Dad (or dads) would set the monthly Calendar for Dads to volunteer in the Eagle Eye program and be the head “wrangler” to have Dads join PTA and become involved in activities at Liberty. Kick-off for the Eagle Eye program will be at Donuts with Dads during American Education Week (AEW). • Legislative Lead We need one or more person(s) to head up legislative issues on behalf of Liberty PTA and to attend PTA Day at the VA General Assembly on January 27th-28th.

Committee Reports: After School Enrichment (ASE) Our Fall ASE program consists of Chess Club, Drama Kids, and OM. We hope to offer additional ASE programs in the Spring, but we need a Lead.

American Education Week (AEW) We will celebrate public school education from Nov. 12th – 16th.

A flyer will go home with all the details via the Thursday folder on Nov. 7th. Just some of the activities will include: Muffins with Moms (Monday, Nov. 12th @7:30-7:50am) and Donuts with Dads (Friday, Nov. 16th @7:30-7:50am), which will also kick-off our new Eagle Eyes program. Teachers will also be planning special programs within their classrooms.

Directory The PTA Membership Directory is being finalized now. The Directory will be sent to PTA members via e-mail in early November. Odyssey of the Mind (OM) We have held our first parent meeting and Coaches and Teams are being finalized.

We are forecasting a banner year for OM for participation and thinking outside the box! Outdoor Classroom GREAT NEWS ON LIBERTY'S OUTDOOR CLASSROOM!!!

We are thrilled to report that the outdoor learning environment in both courtyards is VERY CLOSE TO COMPLETION! The main outdoor classroom courtyard now includes: a stunning water feature complete with a cascading waterfall, bench seating for 1-2 classrooms, a weather monitoring/solar station and a butterfly garden. All that remains are a few finishing touches but the space is just about ready for teaching! We hope the space will be developed and used in many ways to teach about our natural world as it relates to Loudoun County, Virginia and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculums. The second courtyard, the "kitchen garden," will be completed over the month of November by an Eagle Scout candidate and Freedom Student, Joshua Kim, with supervision by Outdoor Classroom Committee member and Liberty dad Jeremy Woon. We recently held two, very successful

workdays wherein we recruited parent and teacher volunteers and Freedom H.S. students requiring volunteer hours. In addition, a local Eagle Scout candidate Matthew Riley stepped up to take on a very complex component of the project: the water feature. A huge THANK YOU to all of those who participated in those work weekends: Our current PTA Outdoor Classroom Committee: Vinayak Arumugam, Anne Corej, Nabeela Fischer, Laura Tubridy (chair), Sukdev Rawat, Avinash Tale and Jeremy Woon.

Our water feature crew: Eagle Scout candidate Matthew Riley. Special thanks to Matthew's dad and his business, Andy Riley and Enterprise Contracting, for all the professional expertise and value-added on the water feature. Matthew recruited several of his fellow scouts from Troop 682 and their parents to assist in this endeavor. Many thanks to all who helped. Also thanks to Nabeela Fischer who assisted with the planning for this project.

Our weather station crew: Liberty 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Melissa McAtee, her husband Kyle McAtee, and Avinash Tale. We benefitted from the Freedom HS Senior Class volunteer day initiative. Also thanks to their chaperone English teacher Nathalia Hardy. spending many extra hours at the school so we could get the work done! And last-but-not-least, I would like to thank our PTA "Treats on Call" extraordinaire Beth Cattafesta for making sure we didn't get peckish while hard at work! I hope I didn't leave anyone off! Reflections Reflections is National PTA program that unleashes artistic talent in the areas of literature, visual arts, photography, musical composition, dance choreography, and film production. Stone Ridge Race for Education Another Record Year! Thank you to all the runners, walkers, volunteers and fans who came out to support the 2012 Stone Ridge Race For Education! We had the perfect weather to welcome a record number of

registrants this year across the Fun Run and the 5K – the final tally came in just shy of 1600! And there were over 160 volunteers that helped pull off this great community-wide event. A special thank you to the Liberty Volunteers for Stone Ridge Race: Julie McGoldrick, Kristy Jones, Anaheeta Minwalla, Amy Minwalla, Michele Hartman, Brooke Hartman, Kyle Elliott, Patrick Griffis, Taylor Griffis, Beverly Weatherly, Judy Luu, Bhuvana Mouli, Heather Tavares, Shri Chimaladinne, Kristin Reed, Rich McGoldrick, Ritesh Khandelwal, Lori Miller, Karin Meenan, Susan Lee, and Laura Szczybor. November Box Tops Contest & Collection Sheet  Please tape, glue or staple one Box Top to each turkey and send in via backpack by Nov. 26th to enter the contest for November. Every child in the three classes with the most Box Tops submitted from Nov. 1st through Nov. 26th will receive a Liberty water bottle and a coupon for $2.00 off of the admission fee to the “Jingle Bell Jog” in December.
