President’s PenWell, I now know that some of

you actually read what I write in thesenotes.

Within hours of the last issue ofThe Lens coming out in the emailversion I had a response from severalmembers with options for setting up aweb presence.

I quickly accepted the kind offerof Wal Phelps to create a page, andwithin hours a draft outline waspresented to me. Circulating thisinformation to a number of memberson email the ensuing commentsenabled some tidying up to occur.

For those who were interestedthe web address is http://aus-tralianpps.wordpress.com/ and anyfurther items of interest, pictures, thoughts etc. which may be of interestwould be welcomed.

Perhaps with time we may beable to put more past issues of TheLens online as part of our historicalcollection. Unfortunately these days"APPS" is computer shorthand forapplications for many tablet likedevices, so searching on the web bythese initials would never be helpful.

There is a section on thewebpage for members images, and Ihope that it may be possible for somefolio winners to make their way toWal for inclusion on the website.

Also at the end of the year weshould be able to display the prize-winners for the year. Send [email protected]

How times change, not long agowe were talking about the hot weath-er, now we talk about the cold weath-er that we are having. We have beenhaving some cold mornings recently, but at least we have generally hadpleasant days to follow.

This morning proved the oldsaying, "you should always carry acamera with you". I went for a walkalong the beach, being able to actuallywalk along the sand because of thevery low tide.

Beautiful patterns on the sandwould have made lovely pictures, alsosome windswept trees silhouettedagainst clear blue sky. But of course, despite having purchased a smallcamera to carry with me, I did nothave it. At least one can retain thememories of what was there. But it isalways hard to practice what youpreach.

I have come across someinteresting comments from an Internetmail group I read.

"Photographers don't know howto critique art only technique.

Painters would never discus a paintingthe same way many photographersseem to want to critique photographs."

"Criticism of art and ofphotographic art should be intended tohelp the original artist to understandwhether or not they achieved thecommunication of the idea they had tothe viewer.

After all, a photograph, apainting, or a book is a way ofcommunicating an idea that the artisthas to the audience. The feedbackthey get about how successful theywere is what the critique should beabout.

Describing how you would havemade the image is less helpful thandescribing what you see in the image. If you see a dark and gloomy sceneand the artist intended it to convey alight and airy feeling, that's helpful. Ifyou "like" it or "dislike" it, that's nothelpful.

Describing how you would havedone the image by changing thecropping, changing the contrast range, etc. to get the picture you would likemight be helpful but it is talking abouta different image than what the artisthas created.

It may be that you see in theactual image exactly what the artistintended or maybeyou didn't, but theartist doesn't knowthat. All they get isa description of adifferent image thatyou do (or maybedon't) like better".

I am not sure Ientirely agree withsome of thesecomments.

I always findit hard, as theoriginal maker, todetermine the bestcrop for somepictures.

Often lookingat a picture inconjunction withcomments fromcircle members Ican think "Yes, itwould be bettercropped there". It isoften hard toanalyse one's ownwork.

One criticismI try to avoidrelates to quality ofequipment. Of

course the person with $200 camerawould get a better picture if he had a$3000 camera and comparable lens.

So is your criticism of thephotograph or the photographer notbeing able to afford better equipment?

I feel today too much of ourserious photography is based onequipment, not just cameras but alsocomputers to help fiddle out the "best"picture. I am sure that for most of ourmembers photography is a pleasure, you do it with the equipment you haveavailable, to the best of your ability, and enjoy it in the process.

So next time I go for a walkalong the beach I will try andremember to take my camera just incase.

Also to enjoy myself in theprocess of taking these pictures andperhaps presenting them in futurefolios.

Hi everyone, The two months between copies of The Lens seems to

come round very quickly. I have had some good news for APPS one of our

members Wal Phelps has volunteered to set up and main-tain a webpage for the organisation - this is great news asso many people seem to rely on the Internet for informa-tion these days. I guess Jim will have more of this in hisreport.

I am starting to think that if you do not live in a met-ropolitan area you cannot get things done.

Recently my large format Epson printer stoppedworking, that in itself is a long story, however after somevery helpful intervention from the guy at Kayell, Epsonagreed to repair it.

As we were going to Sydney we delivered it to therepair centre at Epson, they have rung me saying repairsare completed this took over three weeks but they will notfreight Orange; we must pick it up, this is rather ridiculousand rather difficult.

I do wonder if people living in a metropolitan arearealise people in the country don’t ride around onkangaroos and eat snakes and lizards - we actually domuch the same as our big city cousins. Sorry, but I am veryfrustrated with the ridiculous attitude taken by Epson -great printers but it will be a Canon next time, they have aservice centre here.

With winter well and truly here, now is the time tostart doing some indoor table top photography. Our clubrecently had an evening where we made a set up formembers to take water drop images, this is not as easy asit seems but it can be quite good fun.

We also had another table set up to take smokeimages, this is a little easier using incense to create thesmoke then it is just a matter of focus and lighting, a bit offun on a cold winter’s night.

With all the wet weather around I am trying to takesome successful images of reflections in water drops;another thing that is nowhere near as easy as it seems.

Most of these things are better done with an assistant,it’s times like these I wish someone else in my family wasinterested in photography, but I guess I would end up beingthe assistant so that wouldn’t work either.

I mentioned in an earlier report a member of oursociety, Rhonda Martin, had lost everything in the

Coonabarabran fires, happily Rhonda has purchased a newhome in Glen Innes and is settling in.

The folios seem to be circulating without too manyissues - perhaps the only thing our organisation now needsis some new members.

With the APS making the decision not to worry aboutmembers without Internet access we could perhaps offerthese people an alternative, if you know anyone who isinterested in photography and would like to become part ofour organisation please pass on our details and perhaps acopy of The Lens.

As I mentioned in the past, I much prefer to see aprinted image than one on digital monitor. I do send myimages to digital competitions but feel that a printed imagehas a more lasting impression and it is a real pleasure toreceive the folios each month of such a diverse range ofprints.

We are probably the only organisation that stillsupport slides, however, I don’t believe many of ourmembers are now taking new slide images. I guess this isprogress. We have some younger members of our cameraclub who ask ‘what is a slide’ - how quickly these thingsget forgotten.

“The Lens” Tutorial by Jenny Davidson

Creating an interesting edge effect using quick mask

1. I have opened an image of Ellie

2. Make a rectangular selection staying about a half inch from all edges of the image.

3. Switch to Quick Mask Mode or hit Q on your keyboard.

4. Go to Filter > Brush Strokes > Spatter or Sprayed

5. Adjust the preview window so you can see the edge of your mask and move the sliders until you are pleased with the effect. I used a radius of 20 and smoothness of 4.

6. Exit Quick Mask Mode. Hit Q on the keyboard

7. Invert the selection. >Select>Inverse

8. I used the eyedropper to select a colour from the image and used the paint brush to paint in the selected area.
