MIKE HEALEYAn optimistic view of our natural environment

The gallery is delighted to welcome one of Scotland’s contemporary painting Masters, Mike Healey for his first Solo Show in a Scottish gallery. One of Scotland’s most senior painters, Mike has previously limited the weight of his solo show presence to two outlets in (London) Thompson’s of Marylebone and the Walker Galleries (Harrogate). Interestingly, the Duke (Prince William) and Duchess of Cambridge (Catherine (Kate Middleton) - who studied the History of Fine Art at St Andrews) own one of Healey’s paintings acquired at one of his shows in London in 2013.This solo show is a coup for our gallery and we are very privileged to have this opportunity to bring 55 of Mike Healey’s remarkable paintings to show in the West of Scotland.

Healey is an fascinating character. He is a charming man and when he approaches a blank canvas with his paint brushes and palette, he brings an incredible richness and depth from the width of his life experiences. He sets out to build (for us) a lasting reminder of the incredible beauty of our surroundings and the environment that nature has delivered to us, whether it is an incomparably stunning view of our Scottish West Coast scenery, the simplicity of everyday fruits and vegetables or more luxurious edible crustaceans, cut flowers on a table or, in some instances, he wants to give us an insight into more exotic faraway locations where he has lived, like Brazil.

He was born in 1951 (in Brazil) and went on to study at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1970-1974. Healey would also join the academic staff at GSA from 1983-1997, where he became Head of Graphics, Illustration and Photography and went on to run the largest individual department, the Design and Applied Arts Department.Healey had studied in the era of David Donaldson and James D (Jimmy) Robertson, a period when the training emphasis was principally focused on classically-based impressionism, post-impressionism and expressionism. Fellow Art School students in that period included Helen Wilson PAI RSW RGI, Pam Carter, Glen Scouller RGI RSW, Ruth Swann (jewellery designer) and the actor Peter Capaldi (Dr Who).Healey has developed layers of artistic pedigree and reflects that he formed his style at Art School (GSA), which was influenced by his teacher at both his boarding school (Keil School) and the Art School (GSA) – John Cunningham RGI DLitt (who was the archetypal artist - colourful and charismatic, he was married to a French wife, he smoked Gauloise cigarettes, he dressed like an aristocrat and rather eccentrically he wore the obligatory food stains down the front of his jumper). Healey was taught/drilled on how to draw and apply paint, particularly how to be unlaboured and not to overpaint with the brush. He is happy to deliberately let the canvas show through his paint which, in his view, adds a vibrancy and freshness. He was also taught tonality and colour and how to deliver an optimistic (rather than black or depressing) view within his paintings. He wants the viewer to pause and engage with and enjoy his paintings and to appreciate the glory of life and living.

In his final year at GSA, he won the Leverhume Travelling Scholarship and used this to spend a year in the US, during which time he had tea with the globally famous US illustrator Norman Rockwell, who taught him that ‘it is the end result that is important, not how you get there’. Critically, before turning to a phase of life as an art academic, he also gained valuable experience in the commercial world in North America, South America and the UK - a factor that would have influenced his ultimate choice of artistic conversation.

These elements helped to shape his art and the body of work included in this show - we hope you enjoy your introduction to Mile Healey.
