Better Than You Take Charge!

By MOHD RIZAL HASSAN [email protected]

A Learning Facilitator is a person who con-stantly encourages their audience to be their best.

The question is, what is "the best"? One guideline I would like to share with you to gauge what is "the best" is to simply help your audience be BETTER THAN YOU.

You may have been invited, selected, elected, proposed or just shoved forward in front of a group of people.

The reason you are now standing in front of an audience is because someone out there believes that you are knowledgeable, experienced, you have something to contribute, to share and to make an impact.

They believe that you are all that and maybe more, because if you were anything less, you would never find yourself invited in the first place!

Therefore, when your client or audience invites you to speak because they believe you are 'more' than them, then when you

conduct your program your intention would be to help your audience to be better than you.

Imagine that your audience is already 'good', and they invited you to speak because they believe that you are 'better‘.

Therefore it would only be logical for you to help them to be 'better than you' and be 'the Best'!

And how would you know that you've achieved this level of success with your audience?

Remember the saying, “You can see a bad trait about a person only because you possess that same bad trait”?

Similarly, you are able to recognize a good quality about a person only because you too have the same good quality within you.

The point is, when you do see good qualities emerging from your participants after your program, you have only achieved

“Go beyond

What you expect and you’d be surprised

by the unexpected. Go for what is expected

and you’ll get what you want.”

Mohd Rizal Hassan,

2012

the success of helping your participants to be SAME LIKE YOU.

So how do you know you've achieved the success of helping your participants to be better than you?

You will know when their actions surprise you.

This element of surprise means your participants have taken positive steps and have even achieved success beyond your expectations.

For example, if a participant who used to be broke starts to make money after attending your program, the participant is same like you.

If the participant becomes a billionaire faster than you, then the participant is better than you.

So, look excitedly forward to your next group of participants and look forward to be pleasantly Surprised.

That's a sure sign that you have just helped someone to be BETTER THAN YOU.

Achieving Mastery as a Learning Facilitator is about getting everybody else to become better than you.

Mengapa saya perlu memiliki perniagaan?

Mind Your Own Business By THARWAH KASSIM

[email protected]

Jadi, apakah kekangan apabila kita menjadi pekerja sesebuah organisasi?

Page 7: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

dak) selama kedua-duanya belum berpisah.

Cetakan berganti cetakan dikeluarkan bagi memenuhi permintaan pembaca membuktikan Ateh berjaya mengolah kembali Law Of Attraction (LOA).

TLC: Mohon Ateh gambarkan apakah itu konsep Law of Universal Attraction.

Tiada manusia suka hidup miskin kerana ia menyebabkan kita terpaksa meminta-minta.

Dialah Yang Maha Mengabulkan Hajat (As- Somad) lagi Maha Penyayang.

Bersantai sambil beraiskrim!

TLC: Siapakah inspirasi Ateh?

Ateh: Rizal Hassan.

TLC: Bagaimana Ateh bercuti?

TLC: Bagaimana Ateh memotivasi diri?

Ateh: Mentor Akademi LUA!

Keluarga tercinta menjadi pendorong semangat usaha Ateh.

DETERMINATION

Your Psychic Stamina Determination means the ability to carry out a task all the way to the end. Anyone who attends motivational courses knows it’s easy to be determined.

However, when you come home from these courses, it becomes difficult to stay determined.

Motivational speakers are like Silat coaches. They can only motivate you.

It is up to you to be determined to continue fighting.

How much and how long you can keep fighting depends on your physiological stamina.

Similarly, how much and how long you can stay determined depends on your psychic stamina.

Therefore, to never give up and always stay motivated, you want to learn how to train your determination; your psychic stamina.

In this column, TBD: To BE Determined, I will share powerful methods used by the Pendekars, warriors of Silat. They use these to keep their psychic stamina charged and stay committed.

You will, too.

There are 3 rules in TBD to remember when charging your psychic stamina:

1. Rule of Energy: You are always energetic in different ways at different times.

2. Rule of Control: You are always in full control of how you use your energy.

3. Rule of Responsibility: You are

always responsible for where you are,

where you want to be and how you

get there.

The Rule of Energy tells you that as

long as you are alive, you have energy.

There is no such thing as having no

energy.

The Pendekar’s determination is key

to their success

Page 13: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

Imagine studying lazily for an exam, yet when a friend invites you for a movie, you suddenly become highly energised.

This rule says that your energy mode was mismatched with what you were doing.

If you were studying Melaka history from a textbook and your energy mode was better suited to watching movies, a round of P. Ramlee’s “Hang Tuah” might reenergise you.

The Rule of Control tells you that you have the power to choose the activity that best matches your energy mode.

All you need is to understand what these modes are and how to use them best.

Even the most stressed out of employees can be recharged by seeing their newborn baby smile at them.

The Rule of Responsibility tells you that you’re responsible for your current situation, ambitions and actions to achieve those ambitions.

Being responsible doesn’t mean you’re to blame for what has happened to you.

It means YOU are the one who is able to respond and make changes to it (response-able).

Together, these 3 Rules form the acronym ENCORE, which means an additional performance at the end of a concert.

Considering that, it’s a fitting meaning for when you can carry a task all the way to the end, and still have the ability to deliver more.

Over the next few issues, I will reveal how To BE Determined using more Silat concepts. So, keep reading and surprise yourself!

PLFs prove worthy in the new year

29 January 2012 SHAH ALAM - Almost 100 people spent two days listening to seven speakers deliver self-development topics from their expertise at the Raja Tun Uda Library here.

Today was the close of the learning event known as the PLF Showcase - A New Year | A New You!. The event, co-organised by Take Charge Sdn Bhd, Pertubuhan Nisa' Malaysia and Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Selangor, was the first time such an activity took place.

Program director, Mohd Nadzrin Wahab, who was also one of the speakers, explained the concept of the event as a learning buffet, provided free to the public, who would otherwise have to pay a steep price to gain knowledge.

The speakers were the Professional Learning Facilitators, a group of certified trainers who bring a unique twist to their training programs.

"The Professional Learning Facilitators, or PLFs for short, are members of a fraternity who have completed a intensive 3-day training program to become 'trainers', except, we focus on the learning, not the training," he said.

He admits, it is an alien concept for most to grasp, but he sums it up as caring more for engaging the learner and using any means necessary to ensure the message gets across, as compared to a rigid structure of teaching that a trainer must follow.

Each PLF instead follows and uses the Take Charge Learning Facilitation System which was founded by Mohd Rizal Hassan of Take Charge Sdn Bhd. To enable these PLFs to gain exposure and test their mettle in front of a real audience, the PLF Showcase was born.

Jointly developed between several PLFs, the concept of the event was to put on stage in front of a public audience, newly graduated PLFs.

After their presentation, Rizal and the audience, would provide coaching and feedback on their performance and share points for improvement.

The event was deemed a success after several audience members inquired if there was going to be a repeat edition. Rizal replied that the showcase will continue as a quarterly event throughout the year.

On stage together for the first time.

Rev Up Your Life thrills & surprises

29 April 2012, SHAH ALAM - Despite the potential traffic jams and the lure of staying home comfortably over the weekend, a dedicated group of people braved the heat and distance to attend the PLF Showcase 2.0 - Rev Up Your Life! at the Raja Tun Uda Library in Section 13, here, over two days to listen to 12 talented speakers share their knowledge.

The two days were a buffet of knowledge where members of the public from all walks of life attended. Topics as diverse as personal development, email marketing, child development, gold investment and business management excited the senses of those who came.

The event, which was jointly organised and hosted by the PLF Family and Take Charge Sdn Bhd put on stage Professional Learning Facilitators (PLF) who have completed a 3-day basic training program to become skilled educators.

The PLFs are trained in the Take Charge Learning Facilitation System founded by Mohd Rizal Hassan, an International Learning Facilitator. Most of these PLFs were already trainers or coaches in their own fields before attending the course.

As part of their continuous development as a PLF, they are required to present their

best learning materials to an unknown audience, while Rizal observes them.

This gives the PLFs the practice and exposure to stand up in front of a crowd and learn to manage the audience. The audience, who are allowed to watch for free, are then given the opportunity to provide feedback on the speakers' performance.

The Family grows bigger by the Showcase.

Page 16: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

Some of the PLFs were also being audited for Mastery, the next level of PLF certification. At this level, a PLF is recognised as a Master Practitioner of the Take Charge Learning Facilitation System and may be given the right to audit and certify other PLFs.

The serene surroundings of the picture-perfect library complemented the learning shared inside the auditorium on the second floor, where parents and children sat and listened to the talks.

Rizal commented on the difference between this program and other learning programs, "Our events are family-friendly, which means babies and children are always welcome. The informality of the event allows us to share and connect well with the audience. For PLFs on stage, it also provides a good challenge to present with distractions".

The event kicked off on Saturday with Rizal sharing a 30-minute tip with the audience which served as an appetiser for the coming speakers.

Among the more memorable moments included Hakim Mohd Nor's sharing of a personal development method which allow-

ed him to excel in his studies, attain the five-figure monthly income he wanted, the car he dreamed of and a life partner he had never met. He is getting married this year.

Audience members were also pleasantly surprised by Mohd Nadzrin Wahab in full Malay warrior garb performing a Silat wardance as part of his topic, followed the next day by a spine-tingling combat demonstration by Rizal and himself.

The other presenters on Saturday included Rina Baha who explored professional etiquette, Muhammad Fazlaidha who extolled the power of email marketing for entrepreneurs, Nura Muna Ab

dul Halim who shared the importance of attitude in a Muslim's daily life, and HR specialist Azmi Abu Bakar who demonstrated the effectiveness of mindset transformation.

The Sunday presenters were just as thrilling with Zuhairi Mohd Nopiah introducing the Islamic perspective on the Law of Attraction, Firdaus Arshad on recovering from a negative life event, Suhaili Ikhsan on using house chores to develop young children, Gold Coach Shila Hakim on investing intelligently in gold and Tharwah Kassim on the benefits of starting your own business.

Mac fans had a treat as Hanis Jenalis closed the two-day event with his eagerly-awaited topic, "How to Master My Mac", which only served to convince if not convert the non-Mac fans in the audience to run out and buy an apple of the non-biological variety.

Program director, Nadzrin deemed the event a success. "I believe we've achieved what we set out to do. This is the second episode of the event and more people attended this round than the last. It's also the first time PLFs attained Mastery before a public audience, so yes, I'm happy".

Rizal, looking for trouble.

Suhaili Ikhsan Changing how

parents love their children

Most Malaysian parents grow up inheriting their own fathers’ and mothers’ parenting methods and ideology.

Thus, when Suhaili Ikhsan appeared on stage during the very first PLF Showcase in 2012, little did she know how much of an impact she would have on the people who were watching her.

Step by step, she carefully deconstructed the audience’s preconceived notions of parenting and dismantled them before their very eyes.

By the end of her topic, many a parent had converted to her views that a child is unlike an adult in every way, therefore should not be treated like an adult, nor conform to adult expectations.

Suhaili is both a parent’s best friend and probably worst enemy. At PLF gatherings, when Suhaili appears, parents ask themselves if there’s any evidence that they bought fast food for their children, or that they were eating non-dairy ice-cream, or even if their kids were blissfully distracted by a tablet computer.

TLC: Please tell us how you came into this line?

Suhaili: Since 2000, I started to run my own kindergarten. After several years, the business grew and I have seven branches.

I also attended many courses related to business and early childhood education.

I started to do in house training for all of my teachers & staffs.

Then, some of my friends invited me to train their teachers which then led to me being offered to be a UMCCED (University of Malaya Centre for Continuing Education) trainer. That’s how I started.

TLC: Tell us about what you share in your courses?

Suhaili: I play 3 roles: firstly, as a Preschool teachers’ trainer, I share topics related to early childhood development and important preschool activities that should be carried out according to the milestones of a child’s growth.

Secondly, as a Parenting coach, I share how to handle children’s behaviour (especially 0-8 years old) and make parents understand the practice that’s appropriate to their child’s development.

Thirdly, I’m a kindergarten consultant. I consult for new kindergarten operators on how to set up their new business, give them resources on suppliers, books etc.

I also advise kindergarten operators on how to increase their business revenue.

TLC: Who are your inspirations and why?

Suhaili: Firstly, Oprah. I love to see how

The worst thing anyone wants to be seen as, is a bad parent, and Suhaili is fully qualified to make that assessment.

At the same time, it is heartening to know that such an expert is part of the PLF Family, as she becomes the rallying point for young parents to learn how to do it right.

She is passionate about child education, and her chain of kindergartens allows her to apply and share what she’s learned with educators and parents alike.

Secondly, Puan Ainon Mohd, chairman of PTS. I am always amazed by how has she built her publishing empire.

She is a millionaire but she doesn’t live like a real millionaire. She is a real business mentor and I’m always eager to learn from her.

TLC: How do you spend your days off?

Suhaili: In 3 ways. I do a lot of activities with my children such as playing with gooey mixtures, building something from boxes and so on.

Aside from that, I love to go on dates with my husband (without the kids, watch movies and have romantic dinners.

I also love to spend time alone; go to the spa or lepak with my friends.

TLC: What makes you happy, sad, angry and scared?

Suhaili: Happy: When children are happy.

Sad: When I see unfortunate children, especially Palestinian children. Angry: When I know any child being scolded in public or

/murdered/ raped/ or suffers because of an adult. Scared: When I saw a child on a motorcycle without wearing helmet!

TLC: What is the definition of a good PLF?

– Suhaili on where she

will be in 10 years.

TLC: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three books would you want to have with you?

Suhaili: Tafseer Al Quran, The Sealed Nectar, Ihya ‘Ulumuddin (Imam Ghazali) – I really love to read everything he wrote about child education in this book.

TLC: What’s the one thing you would change about yourself?

Suhaili: I really want to become more patient. I’m so inspired by how Rasulullah SAW kept calm when he people threw filth on him while prostrating in his salat near the Kaabah.

Evil people often littered his path with thorns, threw stones until his legs bled and so on.

Such were his challenges. Where are we if compared to his sufferings? But he never complained. He never sought any excuse to stop striving.

TLC: Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Suhaili: I will have my own TV talk show about children and guiding young parents to understand and to encourage the abilities of children.

Keeping the love alive.

Nisa’ Attitudes Satu Pengenalan

Nisa’ Attitudes By NURA MUNA ABDUL HALIM

[email protected]

Menjadi hamba kesayangan Allah?

Menjadi insan paling bahagia?

Menjadi insan kesayangan ramai?

Page 22: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

Survivor English Wrestling With English By COACHSHA & COACHRIDZ [email protected]

A few months back, while shopping for a birthday cake for our daughter in Taiping, we met a Bahasa Melayu (BM) ‘survivor.’

The guy at the counter was Nepalese. When asked about the variety of cakes at the bakery, he explained in Bahasa Melayu, the Nepalese version.

Word by word, he talked about the cake. Did we understand? We got the message.

Did he make grammatical errors?

Definitely.

Did he get his job done? Well, we bought the cake.

The question is: What makes him speak the language, good enough to convey the message across?

Did he speak BM out of his love for our language? Did this foreigner have a strong love and interest to be fluent in our mother tongue? Has he always dreamed of working in a bakery in Taiping?

He has no choice. To stay employed, he must know BM. He has to be desperate to survive.

Simply put, he chose to activate his BM ‘survivor’ mode.

Similarly, to bring our command of English to a higher level, we want to first, activate our own English ‘survivor’ mode.

In this issue, let’s take a look at Language Proficiency Levels.

This helps us to know where we are now and where we aspire to be.

Level 1: Novice (Beginning)

Here, we have extremely limited vocabulary and grammar.

Our skill is limited to ordering food, finding a place to stay, buying necessities, and usually with difficulty.

We don’t want to be at this level, do we?

Wrestling with English isn’t this difficult.

Page 24: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

Level 2: Survivor (Intermediate)

A step higher than the novice, a survivor has the basic vocabulary to survive.

This means that we can ask for the time, talk about the weather, family and jobs.

Our grammar is more or less correct. We know the present, past and future tenses, though at times we do get ‘tense’ using them.

A survivor still needs a dictionary but the command of English is good enough to survive a new environment – office, college, country.

We want to be at least here, don’t we?

Level 3: Conversationalist (Advanced)

You’d like this stage!

Here, we can converse about ideas, exchange opinions, enjoy TV and radio talk shows with slight to moderate difficulty.

Grammar-wise, we’re fine with simple rules and find a bit of a challenge with complex ones.

The best thing is, we can get the conversation rolling!

Level 4: Debater (Fluent)

At this level, we can have a long conversation.

We are happy to use complicated grammar structure with little or no difficulty.

The plus point is we can speak with good accents too.

For sure, this is our dream stage, yes?

Level 5: Native (Mother Tongue)

According to some language experts, anyone who has spoken a language since the age of five is considered a native speaker of that language.

It’s not impossible to reach this level of fluency. Continuous practice helps, and we want to begin at the Survivor Level, at least. To go higher, see you in the next issue – Ready to Wrestle!

Mohd Nadzrin Wahab

Redefining Silat By NURA MUNA ABDUL HALIM

A proud father. That is my strongest impression of Nadzrin. The very first time I took notice of Nadzrin was during the second day of our PLF program in November 2011.

He showed us a video of his daughter, Alisha, playing her badminton racket like a guitar. This impromptu concert was the result of him trying out an encouragement technique Rizal had taught us on the first day.

Although I don’t remember the technique, but I clearly recall the proud smile on his face as he shared his daughter’s achievement!

I am always mesmerised by kung fu films; at how they apply kung fu as life principles. They make kung fu as their way of life, so to say. Nadzrin demonstrates how silat can be applied as good as that. And it's real!

Through him, I learned that silat goes far beyond being simply a cultural curiousity and way deeper than being merely a martial art. It can potentially enrich the soul as long as we want to delve sincerely into its principles.

His other talent is writing, although he doesn’t call himself a writer. He prefers to introduce himself as a WordSmith, and an apt title it is. He utilises his talent in choosing superb words to deliver meanings to simplify the silat principles into life lessons.

When Nadzrin puts his idea to words, they just fall into place and I have to admit, there were several times I Wished I could write them all down.

Let’s take a closer look at this PLF pendekar.

Page 26: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

TLC: Please tell us how you came into this line?

Nadzrin: I started becoming interested in teaching in university when I was crazy about silat.

When I completed my basic training in Silat Cekak Hanafi, I was offered the position of Assistant Instructor (Probationary).

The exposure I got as an assistant, and later, full instructor, challenged me.

Imagine standing there in the middle of the night on a wet field, with a hundred pairs of eyes watching your every move, as you teach techniques.

The uniqueness of that silat was that you had to teach it physically to everyone in the class. By the end of the night, you were exhausted.

Worse still, you had to be fully on your game, in case there were some smart alecks who would pukul curi to test your skill in front of the class. Now those were worst case scenarios.

It was public speaking from hell.

But, that gave me the confidence to face a crowd and share. I’ve been in love with the stage ever since.

When I started working as a journalist, a lot of those communication skills I learned in silat helped me to adapt, interact with and manage people, irrespective of their backgrounds.

Later, I got the opportunity to work as a wellness instructor specialising in stress management and fitness which gave me a nice introduction to corporate training.

After that, my twin backgrounds as a journalist and trainer allowed me to work as a knowledge management instructor. I taught corporations how to write standard

operating procedures, policies, proposals, emails and even their marketing materials.

Now, I’m a Learning Coach working out of the Asia-Pacific regional learning centre for Accenture, one of the world’s largest consulting firms.

Thus far, it’s the job I enjoy the most, as I get challenged every day by the executives that come for courses.

It’s also allowed me to travel to our other offices around the world and experience facilitating to international audiences.

TLC: Tell us about what you share in your courses?

Nadzrin: The methodology I founded is called EnSync, and for the longest time, it was nameless because it was a collection of things I learned in silat and professional communication.

It took Rizal Hassan to suggest that maybe I was keeping these two apart, when the fact is, I could find the link between them and develop them into one whole.

Interestingly, when I shared what I had learned in my professional certifications with my silat teachers, they gave me greater insights into the fact that all of it had count-

erparts and analogies in traditional Melayu thought.

By way of analogies, I saw the link between physical strategies used in silat and verbal interaction strategies, and a whole system became clear to me.

I now explain most things, especially when it deals with human communication and thought using the traditional Grecian four element model: Tanah, Api, Air, Angin.

It’s applications are numerous, from personality typing to emotion management, to conflict resolution, to leadership modes and so much more.

As I continue my studies with my teachers and research its applications, I find more and more value in the treasury of Silat

Melayu knowledge.

TLC: Who are your inspirations and why?

Nadzrin: My inspirations are my teachers, especially those who acted as surrogate fathers for me after my father passed away.

There are too many to list here, but chief among them are Sheikh Afeef uddeen Al-Gaylani, Habib Hasan al-Attas, Ustaz Saiful Muhammad, Prof Dr Azlan Ghanie and Mohd Zainudin Ismail.

They taught me what it means to be responsible, and I’m still doing my best to meet that bar.

Other than them, are my friends and fellow PLFs, who constantly challenge me with their successes.

Nadzrin and the team of wellness trainers.

TLC: How do you spend your days off?

Nadzrin: My wife would argue I have no such thing as a day off. Both my mother and wife call me a workaholic. I can’t not do anything.

Truthfully, though, I’m pretty much a homebody and am not too fond of travelling. I’d rather stay home and spend time with my family, read a good book, or watch movies .

TLC: What makes you happy, sad, angry and scared?

Nadzrin: Happy? I love discovering new things. Every time I find something that surprises me, I feel good, and I like that.

Sad? Well, sad is usually when I don’t do as well as I thought I would, or promised and basically disappoint myself. And dead animals. I can’t stand to see dead animals.

Angry? Not much gets me angry actually. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I was angry at anyone or anything.

Scared? I hate confrontation, which is why I’d naturally either prevent them from happening or manage them immediately.

TLC: How do you motivate yourself?

Nadzrin: I would read. My conception is, if

I’m not motivated, it’s because one of my beliefs has changed to a negative one. So, in order to change it back, I need new information to counter that. Easiest way to get new information, is to read.

TLC: What is the definition of a good PLF?

Nadzrin: I believe a PLF is someone who enjoys learning and enjoys sharing that learning with other people.

TLC: If you were stranded on a desert island, what three books would you want to have with you?

Nadzrin: An English translation of the Qur’an (because my Arabic is lousy), Sirrul Asrar (because it’d take years to understand anyway) and the thickest omnibus of Spider-Man comics that has ever existed.

TLC: What’s the one thing you would change about yourself?

Nadzrin: My fitness level. My target this year is to get back to being the energetic, agile and skinny Nadzrin my wife used to know.

That would lead to better health. With that, there’s so many more things I can do.

LUA: Seni Menarik Kejayaan & Kebahagiaan

Law of Universal Attraction By ZUHAIRI MOHD NOPIAH [email protected]

“Aku heran betullah dengan si Hafiz tu. Semua yang dia buat menjadi!

“Bisnes maju, rumah besar, keretanya hebat, keluarganya bahagia.

Apa Itu “Law of Universal Attraction” (LUA)?

Page 30: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

“Aku bertindak sebagaimana sangkaan HambaKu.

“Kejayaan menghasilkan kejayaan, seperti wang menghasilkan wang” (Aril Panjaitan). Keluaran hadapan: LUA: Magnet Kejayaan Diri & Organisasi.

Magnet kejayaan Diri & Organisasi

apabila kita memahami ilmu Law of Universal Attraction (LUA).

Kenali sebelum mendorong Tingkah Laku Positif Kanak-Kanak

By SUHAILI IKHSAN [email protected]

vi. Kurang kemahiran sosial.

vii. Kurang makan sayur.

viii. Gangguan emosi; cepat marah dan menangis.

Page 32: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

3. Menonton TV tanpa had kawalan.

4. Permainan video serta kurang terdedah kepada pelbagai aktiviti menyeronokkan (seperti zaman kanak-kanak kita dahulu; melastik, terjun sungai, bermain pondok, main congkak, panjat pokok dan pelbagai

keseronokan lagi, masih ingat lagi?)

Coach Sha & Coach Ridz

Building bungalows with English When you approach the Coaching Zone from the outside, there is no indication to announce the presence of any type of educational center, not even your traditional signage.

Housed in a typical shophouse block, you’d hesitate to rush up the stairs as you see the prominent sign for a dentist’s clinic over the entrance.

But as you look further up the stairs, you notice the words Fasih Berbahasa Inggeris on a bunting, and homely looking shoeracks beckoning you to walk in. The moment you’re in the door, you stop, because you wonder if this is the right place.

“Did I just walk into someone’s home?”

You see a half-carpeted, half-wood-boarded floor, a dining table and very comfortable sofas, unlike anything you’d see in a tuition center or an office. Then, you’d notice the faint waft of dhikr coming from the speakers even as the air greets you with the cool fragrance of attar.

As you stand there in awe, you hear a “Hi!” chirp from the corner, and you’re now face to face with the only two FBI agents in Malaysia, Coach Sha and Coach Ridz.

Sha, the more bubbly one, loves gratuitous puns and feels like the perfect foil her husband, the more cunning, black-humoured Ridz.

Shukri Abdullah to conduct a seminar in Taiping. That was the first time we experienced a real 'training' session.

We enjoyed the session so much that we wanted to learn more. Dr Shukri allowed us to follow his sessions at schools where he gave us the opportunity to share our experiences as 'successful students'.

From there he noticed our talent and made us part of his Bijak Belajar team in 2002. We travelled to schools nationwide delivering Bijak Belajar module and during those sessions, as English Coaches, we shared tips on how to be good at English.

Teachers loved them, especially English teachers. They suggested that we create a module specifically on English. So we created English Sure Boleh (even before Sure Heboh came out).

That was in 2003. We shared non-exam oriented tips on how to catch English naturally.

TLC: Tell us about what you share in your courses?

CS & CR: We share simple and specific tips on how to be good at English. How anyone can catch the language naturally wherever and whoever they are.

We see that the challenge is NOT about the language. It is NEVER about the language. It is about the people learning the language. It is about the ATTITUDE towards the language.

Our approach is to make our audience aware that once they change their attitude towards the language. They can enjoy the language. And we really make them enjoy by games and activities that will make them see that English is not the challenge.

The word is SELAMBA.

We encourage them to activate their SURVIVAL mode. We challenge them by showing how a Nepalese, Bangladeshi or Vietnamese can speak comfortable BM after 2 years in Malaysia and many Malaysian university graduates can't even construct a decent sentence in English after 'learning' English for 17 years. 17 looooooong years!!!!

We coined the phrase Wrestling With English WWE and made the word WRESTLE and the strategy to catch English.

Write, Read, Speak, Talk and Listen.

Do all these the FUN way and English will be yours without you knowing it. You will even end up dreaming in English.

Kehebatan BerFamily By MARIA FAHMI

[email protected]

Sistem ini menyentuh banyak aspek kebersamaan atau kata keramatnya, “Shifting From Me to We”.

Keluaran hadapan: Falsafah Familying

Understanding the Corporate Training Process

SMART Action Tools By AZMI ABU BAKAR

[email protected]

Developing an effective employee training program is vital to the long-term success of any business.

Corporate Training programs provide multiple benefits for employees and the company, but only if they are carefully planned and properly implemented.

Clear understanding of policies, job functions, goals and company philosophy lead to increased motivation, morale and productivity for employees, and higher profits for the business.

Training is a means to a specific end, so keeping goals in mind during the develop-ment and implementation stages of your training program will assist in creating a clearly defined and effective program.

Training is one of the most profitable investments an organization can make. No matter what business or industry you are in the steps for an effective training process are the same and may be adapted anywhere.

Most corporate training and develop-ment processes are based on the following five basic training steps.

You will find that all five of these steps are mutually necessary for any training program to be effective and efficient.

Step 1: Establishing a Needs Analysis This step identifies activities to justify an

investment for training. The techniques necessary for the data

collection are surveys, observations, interviews, and customer comment cards.

Several examples of an analysis outlining specific training needs are customer dissatisfaction, low morale, low productivity, high turnover and performance gaps.

By determining training needs, an organization can decide what specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes are needed to improve the employee’s performance in accordance with the company’s standards. Step 2: Developing a Training Plan, Budget and Annual Training Calendar

This step Summarises and prioritises the Organization’s needs into their Training Calendar. With this, it’s easier for them to determine the training budget annually for the whole organisation.

The 5-Step Corporate Training Process.

Step 3: Sourcing the Training Resources At this step, most of the training

coordinators or corporate organisations shall begin determining either to conduct in-house training or sending their staff for public programs depending on the number of participants that were indicated in the Training Needs Analysis.

The allocation of Training budget as well as the critical needs are also taken into consideration in making such decisions. Step 4: Deliver The Training Program

At this step, training shall be delivered accordingly either through an in-house or public program.

Most training coordinators shall focus on the training objectives and liaise with the respective training providers, trainer or Professional Learning Facilitator to custom-ise the delivery and training methodology according to the Training needs. Step 5: Evaluate the Training Program

This step will determine how effective and profitable your training program has been.

There are many methods for evaluation

such as pre and post-surveys of customer comments cards, the establishment of a cost/benefit analysis outlining your expenses and returns, and an increase in customer satisfaction and profits.

The objective of the training evaluation is to measure the program and the training administrative arrangement, the trainer or facilitator performance and the most important part; training effectiveness to the participant as well as to the organization.

The objective of the training evaluation is to measure the program and the training administrative arrangement, the trainer or facilitator performance and the most important part; training effectiveness to the participant as well as to the organization. There are several obvious benefits for evaluating a training program.

First, evaluations will provide fesedback on the trainer’s performance, allowing them to improve themselves for future programs.

Second, evaluations will indicate its cost-effectiveness.

Third, it’s an efficient way to determine overall effectiveness of the training program for employees as well as the organization.

The importance of the evaluation process after the training is critical.

The training coordinator will use the information to communicate to higher management that most of the trainings conducted are really focused on the actual needs and the training budget has been utilised effectively.

Birth of a Family All In The Family By THE LEARNING CIRCLE

portunity to create a 3-day workshop called

The Professional Learning Facilitator (PLF) program.

This workshop integrated classroom engagement skills, learning delivery skills, and business approaches that a brand new facilitator would need. Most importantly, it

As with all things, the PLF Family began with one dream. One man had experienced a transformation, and he wanted to share it with the World.

As a martial arts trainer and later a Learning Facilitator for a large engineering firm, Mohd Rizal Hassan had a passion for learning and sharing knowledge.

Like many other learning professionals, Rizal was interested in exploring new methods and strategies to improve his classroom engagement and learning delivery skills.

However, it was not until he immersed himself in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) that he discovered how powerful and useful it was to his career.

The strategies in NLP greatly enhanced his abilities as a learning facilitator and allowed him to be engaged by many com-panies within Malaysia, and later inter-nationally.

This success was just the beginning to many more to come. And he wanted to share this with his peers.

So, in the beginning, he put together a workshop called the Learning Facilitator’s Toolbox.

After a few modifications, he saw the op-

was a program to guide presenters to be the PLF they had always wanted to be.

The program would introduce and enable the participants in the Take Charge Learning Facilitation System.

It was not a certificate program, but par-ticipants could achieve the level of Mastery by inviting Rizal to coach and audit them while they conducted their own programs.

The very first corporate workshop was held at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) on the 29th of December 2010 and saw 25 participants attending.

The first public workshop was organized on 14 Feb 2011, also at IIUM.

Among those early graduates of the program were Zuhairi Mohd Nopiah (Found-er of Law of Universal Attraction), Haji Azmi Abu Bakar (SMART Knowledge Consultant), Fauzul Naim Ishak (FINE Academy) and Sofiyah Satuyah Rasin (Oasis of Odyssey Solution).

The program was well received and saw several iterations with new PLFs being produced. Yet, Rizal saw a camaraderie and cooperation missing from the mix.

That opportunity came in June 2011 when he was approached by a government agency for a project.

It entailed designing a multi-topic competency program and enabling the agency’s internal trainers.

Rizal gathered together those PLFs he felt he could depend on to share the effort and income from the project. It would also serve as a good practice ground for those new PLFs

to perform. Unfortunately, the project never took off when the said agency changed their priorities.

But, the idea was too good to be put aside.

On 16 November 2011, a new batch of PLFs was born. Among this group were Heliza Helmi (Akademi Fantasia), Nura Muna Abdul Halim (Nisa’ Malaysia), Hakim Md Nor (Suria Horizon) and Mohd Nadzrin Wahab

(EnSync Learning).

This group’s eagerness to achieve Mastery in the Take Charge Learning Facilitation System drove them to come up with an event where they could have Rizal for a whole day to coach and audit them all at the same time.

Thus, the PLF Showcase was born.

The initial idea was mooted by Nadzrin but was developed, expanded upon and managed by Muna with the resources of her organisation, Nisa’ Malaysia.

It eventually became a two-day, public program for free that would feature 10 PLFs on stage, sharing the best of their knowledge.

Although the event was initially intended to run at the DBKL library, some logistical complications saw it being moved to the Shah Alam PPAS Raja Tun Uda library.

No one could have foreseen how important that change was to the founding of the Family.

On the 28th and 29th of January 2012, the very first PLF Showcase ran to a crowd of more than 100 people.

The PLFs got their opportunity to present, as a PLF, in front the public for the very first time.

They got honest feedback to improve their performance.

And also, for the very first time, the largest number of PLFs gathered in one place and discovered that there were more of them than they had realised.

Buoyed by the energy of the event, Rizal made a very important announcement on the 2nd of February 2012.

The most important part of his announcement was that the PLFs are now a Family.

The second part announced the creation of the PLF Lab concept, where any PLF can run a free 3-hour session to help upskill their fellow PLFs.

The PLF Labs is a concept like no other; PLFs sincerely sharing among PLFs, organised at any time, any where, by any PLF.

Thirdly, he declared that the showcase will be held quarterly throughout the year.

All talks during the showcase will be video recorded and placed on a dedicated website to help promote the PLFs and their services to clients.

This was the beginning of a self-sustaining ecosystem that would produce, develop and support PLFs throughout their careers.

The PLF concept had at that point evolved from a mere program to a self sustaining support group which we affectionately refer to as the PLF Family.

PLF Showcase 2.0, the second iteration, was held on the 28th and 29th of April 2012 at the same venue and was an even bigger success with many firsts.

This time, 12 PLFs rocked the stage, witnessed by more than 150 people. It also

PLF gatherings often hijack weddings.

Page 44: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

saw 5 PLFs attain Mastery, the first time ever in a PLF Showcase.

This was also the first PLF Family event to get airtime on the TV Hijrah talkshow “Assalamualaikum”, hosted by Amin Idris, who is himself a PLF.

Fauzul Naim Ishak and Maria Marzuki represented the Family during the ‘live’ interview.

It was around this time that Rizal announced that the Family would be establishing a Foundation to assist PLFs who want to attain expensive learning certifi-cations, but don’t have the funding to do so.

The PLF Family began to pick up speed following this and more new PLFs joined the fray.

The biggest contributor to PLF interaction is the dedicated PLF Family Facebook Group. Every single day, PLFs report their successes, share their knowledge and give and receive support from each other.

As a Family, the PLFs always looked forward to seeing each other, either by attending each others’ programs (often even helping out), organising Labs or even just visiting their homes.

It seems that every time the Family gets

together, something new gets created.

This was exactly what happened at Kompleks Mahasiswa Universiti Putra Malaysia on the 27th of July 2012 when a group of PLFs was attending Rizal’s ad hoc 2-day workshop on NLP, Hypnosis and Business Planning.

Instead of just learning, they immersed themselves in a fruitful discussion that gave birth to a new methodology called SOIF, a more positive alternative to the time-honoured SWOT.

Rizal and Muna took it upon themselves to refine it further and develop it to become far more robust. It was applied and tested by various PLFs to different audiences in different learning topics.

As a result of all this testing, the very first SOIF Coach Certification Program was conducted in Bangladesh on the 19th of September, 2012.

The 2nd SOIF Coach Certification Program was conducted in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan on 25th September 2012.

Thus, when the next showcase (PLF Showcase 3.0) was organised on the 17th and

Witnesses to the birth of SOIF.

Page 45: The Learning Circle Vol 1 Jan 2013

CONTENTS PAGE THE LEARNING CIRCLE JAN 2013

18th of November 2012, it was no surprise that the PLFs gave birth to something new again.

This time, they formally announced the creation of International Professional Learning Facilitators Sdn Bhd (also to be known as PLF International), a learning provider that would act as an outsourced marketing arm for all of the PLFs.

Also revealed is the monthly eMagazine

titled “The Learning Circle”, which would be published online, primarily for the PLFs, but also as a way to brand the PLFs to the world.

On 29th of December 2012, the PLF Family celebrated their 2nd anniversary as commemoration of the PLF Program that produced the very first PLFs.

Now, it seems that the sky is the limit for the PLF Family. As new members join its ranks, this motley crew of people bound by a

common purpose and the love of learning gathers speed, intent on becoming a force to be reckoned with.

The idea that began as a dream has grown into a full blown reality with many more achievements planned ahead, InshaAllah.

As of now, we are Family. The PLF Family.

their expertise with the public for free. It's primary intention is a stepping stone towards mastery as a Master PLF, certified by Rizal.

The event is held every 3 months in a year, traditionally at the end of January, April, July and October with different themes of personal development.

How do I become a PLF?

All you have to do is attend the next 3-day The Professional Learning Facilitator Program organised by PLF International. You may check the course calendar at www.thelearningcircle.com.my, or email [email protected] for more information.

What is PLF International?

It is a company founded by the PLFs themselves to help market their members’ services to clients.

What is a PLF?

PLF stands for Professional Learning Facilitator. In the competitive world of training and facilitation, anybody with the confidence to stand in front a crowd of people and talk wants to be called a ‘trainer’.

A PLF elevates the mere concept of ‘training’ to the Art and Science of facilitating learning.

PLFs use the Take Charge! Learning Facilitation System®, founded by Mohd Rizal Hassan, to achieve this goal.

To qualify as a PLF, they undergo a 3-day intensive program where they explore and use the many tools used by Rizal in his many high-impact programs.

He is known to fill his programs with tools and techniques, rather than theories and talk (lecture). Focus is given to “How to” rather than just “Why”. He believes that there will always be many ways to address a subject and he is merely adding another

point of view to one’s rich repertoire with regards to the subject of sharing and learning. A PLF has the option of continuing their development to the next level, which is as a Master Practitioner of the system, where they will be considered to audit new PLFs.

What is the PLF Family?

The PLFs are not bound by a rigid organisation, nor official grouping. Instead, they are related by fraternity in a "family", where each member is respected for their unique specialisation and skills. The family will sometimes organise learning events between family members based on interest. Some are internal, and some are external for a public audience.

What is the PLF Showcase?

The PLF Showcase is a two-day learning event where a group of dedicated PLFs share
