Why is The NewInterpreter’sStudy Bible such akey resource? The New Interpreter’s Study Bible, following in the tradition of The NewInterpreter’s Bible Commentary Series, provides biblical scholarship inservice to the church. Over 60 leading Christian and Jewishscholars, such as Elizabeth Huwiler, Douglas Knight, and RalphKlein, have contributed articles on biblical interpretation andcommentaries for each book of the Bible and the Apocrypha.Throughout, the consistent emphasis has been not only to explainthe terms and images of the biblical text, but also to highlight itstheological meaning for early and contemporary believers.

To this end, the contributors to The New Interpreter’s Study Bible haverecognized some biblical texts and themes that have been eitherproblematic or of special spiritual significance to generations of bothJewish and Christian believers—texts that are anti-Semitic,derogatory toward women, or advocate genocide—as well as poetictexts extolling the virtues of human love, texts in praise of wisdom, and early Christian hymns. For such significant biblicaltexts, the authors have, in addition to their standardcommentary, written special notes and excursuses toprovide in-depth information and discussion.

Through this consistent emphasis on the theologicalmeaning of the biblical text, theauthors and editors of The NewInterpreter’s Study Bible hope tomake the ancient textalive, fresh, and relevantto today’s readers, students, andinterpreters of the Bible.
