We don’t yet fully understand why hedgehogs are disappearing from our landscape but the main contributing factors are believed to be:

A Prickly Issue

Hedgehog?

Todaythere are believed to be fewer than one million hedgehogs in the UK.

Hedgehogs are

vulnerable to injury

by lawnmowers

and strimmers.

Our gardens have become very tidy with little space

for wildlife.

Thousands of

hedgehogs are killed

each year trying to

cross our busy roads.

Use of insecticides kills vital insects and removes an important food source for hedgehogs.

Impenetrable walls and fences stop hedgehogs using areas where they once happily lived.

We have lost 50%

of our hedgerows in

the last 60 years.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust want to besure that this isn’t the end of the hedgehog’s story.

The UK’s first Hedgehog Improvement Area was launched in 2014 and it is based right here in Solihull. This pioneering project is working with your community to help save this struggling species.

A Road to Recovery

Make a hole in your garden fence so hedgehogs can roam between gardens.

Here’s a few things you can do to

help hedgehogs in your garden.

Encourage insects into

your garden.

A wild area will provide food and

shelter for hedgehogs throughout the year.

Create a log pile

to attract yummy

insects and provide

a safe place for hedgehogs to

hibernate in winter.

Hedgehogs can

swim really well

but make sure

they can climb

out easily.

Avoid using chemicals in your garden allowing more insects for our hedgehogs

to eat.

Supported by the

Hedgehogs have been disappearing from our countryside, parks and gardens at an alarming rate. Just half a century ago they were a common sight after dark, but today we are lucky if we see any at all. Our environment has changed dramatically in that time and these changes have had a massive impact upon hedgehog populations across the UK. Hedgehogs are vanishing from gardens in Solihull where they had been regular visitors up until just 10 years ago. If we don’t act fast then we risk losing one of our most enigmatic and engaging species forever.
