Hi everyone, and welcome to Nashville Rep’s exciting 2016-17 season! I truly love this time of year, and after something of a break from our audience over the summer, reconnecting with you has all of the excitement of going back to school with none of the homework. A big hug to all of you who have subscribed with us already—your support makes this company possible. If you haven’t subscribed yet, I’m sure it’s just because you haven’t had a chance yet to look over what a great season we have in store for you. It’s not too late! Pro-rated subscriptions are available, and once you see the wonderful show you’re about to watch I know you’ll want to come back. Check out the great shows we have planned this year. Subscribing is a great deal for you—get a flex

subscription if you’re too swamped to commit to any dates yet—and it’s a great way to support something you believe in.

Like, love. I know, sounds a little cheesy to observe that we all believe in love, but you know you do. Even you black-hearted cynics who believe it sucks. The good news is The Last Five Years has something for all of you. I am thrilled to have this show open our season, and I am especially thrilled to have it directed by Jason Tucker. Jason is also a music director and pianist—he did Chicago and Sweeney Todd with us—and having this so-talented man guest direct has been such a treat. I know you’re going to have a great time with this show, and I look forward to seeing you back the next time!

2 2016-2017 SEASON // NASHREP

A WORD FROM OUR PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Time is weird. Sometimes even funny. I’ve been married to my wife for almost a decade—and we’ve been together over 15 years. So is that our relationship? Is our marriage a collection of hundreds of days? Or perhaps it’s the apartments we’ve shared in NY, St. Petersburg, LA and Nashville. Or our first home…or the one we live in now. Even more likely: maybe it’s our son, Mixon, and his little brother who will arrive any day now.

Time is weird and so is marriage. Jason Robert Brown’s time-bending musical The Last Five Years testifies to the power of time and of two people choosing to spend the next ten minutes together…and then the ten minutes after that. The stunning achievement of telling one story

in two temporal directions remains unique in musical theater. The Last Five Years started in Chicago in 2001 and quickly moved Off-Broadway in 2002 where it immediately and firmly lodged itself into the pantheon of American musical theater. Musical theater performers across the country know all of these songs by heart because they are so personal and yet feel delightfully universal.

Here at The Rep, I’ve been honored with the task of telling this story. But I bring considerable talent with me: Gary Hoff, Hanna Schmidt, Phillip Franck, Randy Craft, Russ Davis, and Evelyn Thornhill all have contributed with depth, wit, and intelligence. The musicians play every rehearsal and performance with care and nuance (it’s Nashville, after all, so we have some of the best musicians in the world). And of course, as with any show at Nashville Rep, there’s an unseen crew of technicians, artists, dressers, and more making sure everything works smoothly and perfectly. I’m grateful to each and every one of them.

And then there’s Galen and Seth who, I have no doubt, you will love.

I’d like to thank my friend Rene Copeland for this wonderful opportunity. And I thank you for coming and I hope you enjoy this story. And when you get home, tell someone you love them.

PROTECTING THE WILDEST JUNGLES ON THE PLANET.

MAIN STREET. PRESCHOOL. THE PLAYGROUND. The environment isn’t

just some far off place. It’s the lawn under our feet, the food on

our plate, and the air we breathe. To learn more, go to NRDC.org.

And help protect the jungle creatures in your backyard.

Because the environment is everywhere.
