U.S. Ski Clubs Meeting the Need for Year-Round Activities

By Bob WilbanksEditor of the National Ski Club Newsletter

The Austin Skiers had 364 members who participated or will participate on club trips this year - but only 301 of them went skiing. 31 of their members toured Tuscany in September, and 20 will cycle through eastern Europe on the Texas Ski Council’s Danube cruise and cycle trip in October, and 12 will visit the imperial cites of Prague, Vienna, and Budapest in September... Of the other 301members on ski trips, 48 skied at Snowmass, 52 went to Steamboat, 36 skied at Whistler, 36 to Silver Mountain, 40 skied Park City, 48 to Lake Louise, and 41 skied or snowboarded at Keystone. Austin Skiers, like so many of America’s ski clubs, has become, or is becoming, a ski, adventure, and travel club - its members traveling in groups to sightsee, explore, and of course, ski around the world year-round. A lot of this is the result of aging memberships where skiers and friends who have spent decades skiing together as a group have come to enjoy the experience, but want to enjoy each other’s company with less energy expenditure. This is actually not a reduction of our market, but the ski (travel and adventure) club market is expanding into new territories. We travel year-round, doing things that the “purist” ski club member of the 70s (when I joined a ski club) would never consider doing. The attitude then was “we are a ski club and so we ski”.

Then came the summer camp outs, canoe trips, bicycle outings, summer picnics, and happy hours. The thinking was that, if you did not stay active during the summer, your members were going to lose interest in the club and may not return for the ski trip selling meeting in September. Then those local summer activities expanded into scuba diving trips to Mexico or Belize. Then came Costa Rican, Mexican, and Caribbean beach and resort trips and before you knew it, America’s ski clubs became year-round travel, ski, and adventure clubs. But what we really are is organizations whose members like to party, play, and experience the wonders of the world with our friends. And what better friends do we have than those in our ski club?

Meanwhile, we still have great relationships with ski resorts and their lodges, and we should double down on those relationships and see what those folks have to offer America’s ski clubs. I know that several ski resorts and areas actually attract more people in the summer than they do in the winter, so check out their year-round offerings as well as their ski programs. It’s worth a look.

October 2 - 12 , (Sun.- Wed.), 2016

SAVE the DATESuper Summer Theatre - Season 2016 Overview

Friday, July 15, 2016: MemphisMEMPHIS is set in the places where rock and roll was born in the 1950s: the seedy nightclubs, radio stations and recording studios of the musically rich Tennessee city. With an original score, it tells the fictional story of DJ Huey

Calhoun, a good ole’ local boy with a passion for R&B music and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming black singer that he meets one fateful night on Beale Street.

Friday, August 19, 2016: Bring it OnCampbell is cheer royalty at Truman High School and her senior year should prove the most cheer-tastic - she's been named captain of the squad! But an unexpected redistricting has forced her to spend her final year of high

school at the neighboring, hard knock Jackson High School. Despite having the deck stacked against her, Campbell befriends the dance crew girls and, along with their headstrong and hardworking leader Danielle, manages to form a powerhouse squad for the ultimate competition: The National Championships.

Friday, September 16, 2016: The Mystery of Edwin DroodThis wildly warm-hearted musical kicks off when the Music Hall Royale (a hilariously loony Victorian musical troupe) “puts on” its flamboyant rendition of the unfinished Charles Dickens mystery in ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’. The story unfolds as John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde choirmaster, falls quite madly in

love with his music student, the fair Miss Rosa Bud. Miss Bud, is in turn, engaged to Jasper’s nephew, young Edwin Drood. Our title character disappears mysteriously one stormy Christmas Eve. But has Edwin Drood been murdered? And if so, then whodunit?

Much Ado about NothingEngelstad Shakespeare Theatre, June 27 to Sept. 8, 2016 Two of Shakespeare’s most beloved characters, Beatrice and Benedick battle it out in a contest of will - until they land in each others’ arms. This vibrant and comic celebration of romance introduces you to these famous lovers, and to a host of villains, clowns, and eccentric characters, as Shakespeare deftly explores our never ending search for perfect love.

The GreenshowGreenshow Stage, June 27 to September 10, 2016Unwind before the play at The Greenshow, a free thirty-minute frolic of song, dance, laughter, Elizabethan sweets, and just plain fun. Find a place to relax on the lawn or mingle in the courtyard as you prepare for that evening’s mainstage production. The Greenshow offers three different shows. Themes coming soon!

Henry VEngelstad Shakespeare Theatre, June 28 to Sept. 10, 2016 Completing the three-part tale of the prince who would (or possibly wouldn’t) be king, Prince Hal has inherited the throne as King Henry V and now must quickly act to save his kingdom. His stunning St. Crispin’s Day speech includes some of Shakespeare’s greatest lines, but is it enough to rally his countrymen around their new leader?

The Three MusketeersEngelstad Shakespeare Theatre, June 29 to Sept. 9, 2016A fresh, fast-paced, and funny adaptation of one of literature’s most thrilling romantic adventures: the dashing musketeers—and one plucky kid sister—swashbuckle their way through nefarious villains, international intrigue, and exotic ladies. It’s “all for one and one for all” in an action-packed update of this beloved classic.

The CocoanutsRandall L. Jones Theatre, July 1 to October 15, 2016The Marx Brothers infiltrate the Florida real estate boom circa 1920 and find jewels to steal, pockets to pick, lovers to confuse, hotel guests to confound, and a treasure trove of songs by Irving Berlin. So, you Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo fans, brush up your slapstick and get ready for a hilarious celebration of theatrical and musical sun, sand, and shtick.

Mary PoppinsRandall L. Jones Theatre, July 2 to September 3, 2016The Utah Shakespeare Festival’s Production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s MaryPoppins. Everyone’s favorite nanny takes the stage in this supercalifragilistic adventure. One of the most popular Disney movies of all time comes to life in this “practically perfect” musical! It’s an enchanting mixture of irresistible story and unforgettable song.

Julius CeasarEileen & Allen Anes Studio Theatre, July 29 to Oct. 22, 2016 When people can no longer trust their elected leader, what do they do? Do they remain loyal, or do they stab their opponents in the back? Shakespeare asked that question over 400 years ago, and it is still relevant today. Especially poignant in an election year, Julius Caesar is a dazzling masterpiece of betrayal and faithfulness, treachery and trust.

Murder for TwoEileen & Allen Anes Studio Theatre, August 4 to Oct. 22, 2016 Everyone is a suspect in this hilarious musical murder mystery with a twist: One actor investigates the crime. The other plays all the suspects. And they both play the piano! A zany blend of classic musical comedy and madcap mystery, this ninety-minute whodunit is a highly theatrical duet loaded with killer laughs.

The Odd CoupleRandall L. Jones Theatre, September 14 to October 22 , 2016 Two suddenly single pals—a sloppy sportswriter and a fastidious news writer—strain their friendship by turning roommates and unconsciously repeating the mistakes that spoiled their marriages. This epic mismatch of personalities featuring the careless Oscar and the neat freak Felix will have you giggling with laughter as you see traits of one (or both) in yourself.

Far West Ski Association 84th Annual Convention & 31st Annual Silent Auction & Travel EXPO

Double Tree Resort, Scottsdale, AZ (June 9-12, 2016)

REPORT Your newsletter person was sent as a delegate from our club from hotter than h… Sin City to “you could fry a steak on the sidewalk in 1 minute” Scottsdale, Arizona, to attend the 84th Annual FWSA Convention, celebrating 80 years of Snow Sports while exchanging experiences with delegates from other Ski Clubs and Councils from the Western United States. It has been a while since I last attended a FWSA Convention for the LVSSC in Newport Beach, and to see that some of the delegates over 20 year ago were still in the “Ski Business” was a very uplifting experience indeed. A lot more grey hair, for sure, which was one of the main topics discussed during the conference: How can the industry adapt to a steadily becoming older clientele? The convention kicked off Thursday night with a Pub Crawl. This was a great way for delegates to meet and greet on an informal basis. Two bus load full of Pub crawlers were shuttled to Scottsdale’s famous “Pub Row” and had a ball. Friday morning there were a myriad of opportunities for play. Golf, hiking, spa treatment, wine touring and other unique activities were available. Afterwards, we all met at the pool for a Party sponsored by Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and hosted by Central Council Ski Clubs. In the evening attending the the Silent Auction with a Happy Hour and a Ski Show was a must. Over 50 vendors and sponsors were present and every delegate had to sign up with 6 of them for Saturday morning’s Expo business meetings with those vendors and participation in the raffle. Saturday we got down to business during the most important part of the Convention, the TravelEXPO. I spent time with my chosen 6 prospective vendors, who are very interested in working with our club and all of which pointed out the convenient flights from Las Vegas to their destinations:

• Nancy Greene’s Cahilty Lodge, Sun Peaks Ski Resort, Sun Peaks, near Kamloops, B.C., Canada

• Big White Ski Resort, Kelowna, B.C., Canada

• Whitefish Mountain Resort, Whitefish, Montana

• Silver Mountain Resort, Kellogg, Idaho (Has a new indoor Water Park!)

• Mayflower Tours, Downers Grove, Illinois (Organizes any type of travel from Ski Trips to Cruises)

• Ski.com, Aspen, CO (Organizes Ski Trips to JAPAN!)

After the Expo there were several Panels and Program Meetings held. I also attended the Snow Sports Leadership Academy ‘Safe Travels on the Slopes’, the Awards Luncheon, the Keynote presentation, a Cocktail Party, an Awards Dinner & Dance, and the until the wee hours lasting Party sponsored by the Arizona Ski Council and “bartended” by its president Arleigh Meyers and his partner Marie Grollo. Despite the horrible news early in the morning about the Orlando nightclub shooting, ‘Real Business’ had to continue on Sunday with Elections, Club & Council Awards, Reports, a Brunch and the Association’s Board Meeting ( I had to sign a confidentiality agreement to attend). Whoever needs more information or has any questions about FWSA sponsored trips can contact me anytime at the phone number or email address on Page 2. Margot Kull, LVSSC Newsletter Editor

Pool Party

In 1986, the Oklahoma City Ski Club sent a letter to all the ski clubs in neighboring states that their ski club was being sued by the IRS who wanted to declare the club a for profit tour operator. They were asking for legal defense funds because, if they were found guilty, all ski clubs could all be declared for profit operations. At that time, Bob Wilbanks was the editor of Space City Ski Club’s Sitzmark and when their board discussed the letter, he volunteered to find a list of ski club mailing addresses and mail-merge a letter to all the clubs they could find — although no one knew how many clubs were out there, who they were or where they were located. It turned out that Ski Group (an annual traveling trade show for clubs) had a list of 1,000 clubs — but would not share the list for competitive reasons. NASTAR had a list of 1,000 clubs — but would not share it for competitive reasons — and Steamboat had a mailing list of about 1,000 clubs— but would not share the list for competitive reasons. So it was assumed that there were 1,000 clubs out there — but who and where were they? Bob could find no other ski resorts that maintained a reasonable current ski club officers list because of the time and expense required to maintain that list of ski club officers due to annual elections and constantly changing addresses. The industry assumed that there were then 1,000 ski clubs in the U.S. that purchased 6% to 8% of the U.S. ski market — but most resorts, tour operators and lodges didn’t know who or where they were until they walked into the 30± spring Ski Group shows each year. What the ski industry saw as a difficult market, Bob saw as an opportunity to do something fun and to escape a boring job that he had been doing for 20 years. He began to compile a list of ski clubs and their officers through ski councils, etc. and soon had a listing of the officers of 560 clubs. He then began publishing “The National Ski Club Newsletter” in 1987, claiming that it was sent to 56% of the ski club market — because it was assumed that there

were 1,000 clubs in the U.S. A few years later, he was mailing The National Ski Club Newsletter to the officers of almost 2,500 ski clubs and the assumptions about the U.S. ski club market size had been changed dramatically upward to well over one million members. “When we discovered that there was no way for America’s ski clubs to communicate with each other on a national basis nor for the ski and travel industries to communicate with the clubs — except for 1,000 clubs at the spring ski shows, it was obvious that there was a communication gap in this market,” said Bob. “If a ski club in Georgia came up with an idea that helped ski clubs, why should it take 3 years for clubs in Oregon to figure out the same idea — if ever? Initially we called the magazine an idea exchange system among America’s ski clubs because if a concept worked in Texas, it should work in Alabama. So, if a concept worked somewhere, we told the other clubs about it and an idea could flourish quickly within this audience.” At this time, he published a bi-monthly black and white magazine of 12 to 16 pages that basically told America’s ski club officers and the ski industry what the ski clubs in America were doing. The magazine also told those officers what some resorts were willing to do for the clubs on a national basis.

About 1998, ski Europe’s Richard Davidson organized the inaugural meeting in Houston, Texas, of what was to become the National Ski Council Federation of Ski Europe, Bob Wilbanks, NSCN, featured speaker, David Ingemie, President of USIA - then the umbrella organization of the ski industry, and representatives from the New Jersey Ski Council, Texas Ski Council, Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council, Far West Ski Association and the National Brotherhood of Skiers. Bob was present as an observer and, although he has never been a member of the National Ski Council Federation, he is the only person that has attended all of their annual meetings. He set up the invitation lists for the first few Mountain Travel Symposium’s Group Exchanges. The monthly email Newsflash was begun in March 2008 and allowed ski clubs to receive information about the ski industry and other ski clubs in a more timely manner — and during the summer as the print issue was published in November, January, March and May only.More recently, The National Ski Club Newsletter has been reduced to 4 issues (Nov, Jan, Mar, and May) with about 32 full-color pages each issue — plus a monthly emailed Newsflash as part of his efforts to become “a little more retired” while still keeping the magazine alive. In January 2016, he announced his retirement once he had completed the May 2016 issue. In the March 2016 issue, he announced that the magazine was for sale and is now discussing its sale with a half-dozen or so prospective purchasers. The National Ski Club Newsletter is now being sent to the officers of some 1,500 clubs. For thirty years, Bob Wilbanks has been filling a need and in the process, has shared best practices and ski industry information with 2,500 ski clubs in the US. This led to the growth of ski club membership in the 1980’s and 1990’s. He is truly a Snowsports Builder!

CANCUNSunday, November 6 through Sunday, November 13, 2016 or Tuesday, November 8 through Tuesday, November 15, 2016

instead of

We have a lot of interest in our second trip to Cancun. Please see the flyer in the last 4 months’ newsletters online at www.lasvegasskiclub.com. Bottom line: Tons of fun! All-inclusive!FREE: all you can eat/drink at 15 restaurants and bar, tours, golf, massages, etc.

We have added a “Sunday to Sunday” departure to accommodate individuals who have scheduling issues with ‘time off’ during the week. This will allow individuals to only miss 4 days off work, possibly 6. Friday is the ‘Veterans Day’ holiday. So Sunday, November 6th through Sunday, November 13th, my daughter Angie will travel with these travelers, and the rest of us will meet up with you on Tuesday, when we will arrive. Angie traveled with our group last October 2015, and almost everyone has met Angie…She is the bartender from the Christmas Party.

Tuesday is the cheapest day to fly and best day to check in and out of hotels- unlike weekends. When booking a room, all funds are paid directly to the resort. 100% refundable if you cancel up until one week prior to arrival.

Southwest Airlines has released the November booking dates. If you book flights on Southwest and need to cancel, 100% credit of flight funds towards a future flight. If you book your flight and we find it cheaper later on, you can rebook the cheaper rate and use the credit for another flight. So basically - a no risk vacation!

You are welcome to bring family and friends. Additional charge for more than 2 people per room. We hope to get a good group of people going and make this an annual vacation. We will have a meeting in September to go over all the tours and benefits for the $1500 resort credit and book those prior to departure. We will double check flights, passports and packing lists.

What you can expect:

We typically take a 6am flight out of Vegas, arrive Cancun 3:30 to 4:30 pm. We have FREE airport pick up and drop off. We arrive at the resort. VIP check in with Champagne and drinks and hors d’oeuvres. We get VIP Elite bracelets and awesome rooms and we are on our way to 8 days/7 nights of total fun and relaxation!Whether you want margaritas and tacos or wine and filet mignon, they have it all. Room service available 24/7 and liquor dispensers, beer, drink mixes and soda are in the fridge in your room. NO CHARGE!

The day after arrival, you will go to the golf course club house SPA for your FREE manicure, pedicure and 25-minute back massage. Completely relaxed…Now it is your mission to try as many restaurants and bars, pools, golfing, tours, and spa services as you.We will get together for a group dinner at the golf course club house the night prior to departure to share all of our adventures.

On the 8th day, we will have a late check out, so we can enjoy breakfast and lunch prior to departing back to - REALITY! Depart around 4:30pm, arrive back to Vegas around 10:30pm.

Moon Palace is called your “home away from home”! You will agree that it might actually be better than your house, considering you don’t have to clean up anything and all your meals are prepared, and drinks served to you, and tips are included!

The only thing you need to do now is to call Annette at 714-396-2912 or email her at [email protected] by August 15. and get your name on the list. Currently we have 11 confirmed rooms. The more, the merrier!

Thank you for engaging your time reviewing and considering this awesome trip.

The Alpine Ski Club was gracious enough to invite all members of the Las Vegas Ski & Sports Club to participate in its Summer Kick-off Party, May 20, 2016. Twelve or so LVSSC members eagerly followed the invitation and enjoyed the (surprisingly) delicious food and band "Stoked", one of them until the wee hours. ;-) All pictures and videos can be accessed at https://drive.google.comfolderviewid=0B_nXzxKyqdXWnJkdWtRS2hSRWc&usp=sharing
