Compiled by [email protected] 1 French-English Glossary of the Sensible 27/01/2018 The Language of the Sensible French-English glossary Welcome to the glossary of the Sensible. We hope it will be a valuable tool for those wishing to produce material in English as the Sensible gains recognition on the international scene. This glossary of terms is intended to help those who need to translate material around the Arts and Practices of the Sensible from French into English, some of whom may not be native English speakers. It is the product of a long collective reflection over many years and includes the terminology of the Sensible as well as more general terms and suggestions on how to use them in this context. It is neither exhaustive nor definitive, but we hope it will be a valuable reference and continue to evolve through the feedback of those who use it and have queries around the language of the Sensible. It is organised in alphabetical order based on the French terms. Please note that it is British English biased. The latter part of the document is a sub-glossary covering research and statistical terminology. Note: The terms in bold belong to the terminology of the Sensible and should be used as they are so we can achieve a collective unity of language. If there are issues or constructive feedback on those terms, feel free to contact us. Where English terms are followed by an =, the text following is a dictionary definition Italic texts : examples of translations In using the word Sensible orally – in reference to the paradigm of the Sensible elaborated by Prof Danis Bois - please note that it is in its French pronunciation \sɑ̃.sibl\. Because of the difficulty of translating the term ‘Le Sensible’, we suggest that the first time the notion is used in a publication, a footnote is added explaining what
