Mindful SLO Do you like to set new year’s resolutions? Prefer to setintentions for the year ahead or pick one thing to work on ortoward? Regardless of how we think about the possibilities, goals, wishes, and dreams for the year ahead, all require usto check-in with and listen to ourselves. And, if listening toyour inner voice and to what your body may be telling you is

challenging, you’re definitely not alone. Both require us to be vulnerable andself-aware, create time and space for ourselves, and be brave enough to listen.Perhaps it’s no coincidence that as our daily lives seem to get busier and louder, many seek to create quiet and cultivate more calm for ourselves (e.g., yoga, meditation, lap swimming, or Tai Chi).

Listening to Our Body and What Our Hormones May Be Telling Us: As chemicalmessengers, hormones, travel throughout our body coordinating complexprocesses like growth, metabolism, and fertility. They can also influence thefunction of the immune system, and alter behavior. Changing hormones don’tonly affect teens. What many women don't know — is that the hormonalchanges of perimenopause can bring changes in mood, and for some, aheightened risk of anxiety and depression. “Women with a history of depressionand anxiety are at a higher risk of having a flare-up during the time leading up tomenopause. And getting doctors to take the issue seriously can be challenging”says Jennifer Payne, who directs the Women's Mood Disorders Center atJohns Hopkins University (As Menopause Nears, Be Aware It Can TriggerDepression And Anxiety, Too, NPR, January 16, 2020). Many women gothrough perimenopause feeling isolated and alone. This is especially tough giventhat this period in one’s life can last over a decade and usually coincides withraising teens who are going through their own hormonal changes. Havingconversations with others experiencing similar things or having been through itcan help us feel understood and validated, and that is a valuable gift (ThinkYou're Too Young For Menopause Symptoms? Think Again, NPR, January18, 2020).

Listening to Our Body and it’s Need for Sleep: According to new research fromThe University of Berkeley, California, “A sleepless night can trigger up to a30 percent rise in emotional stress levels” (Stressed to the max? Deep sleepcan rewire the anxious brain, Science Daily, November 2019). The Berkeleystudy “finds that during deep sleep, or non-rapid eye movement slow-wavesleep, our heart rate, and blood pressure drop exponentially, effectively cooingvarious stressors of the day.” While we may not all feel we need 8 hours, qualityrest “enables our bodies to regulate appetite, conserve energy and mitigatesymptoms of anxiety.” "’We have identified a new function of deep sleep, onethat decreases anxiety overnight by reorganizing connections in the brain,’ saidstudy senior author Matthew Walker, a UC Berkeley professor of neuroscienceand psychology. ‘Deep sleep seems to be a natural anxiolytic (anxiety inhibitor),so long as we get it each and every night’." Furthermore, “Without sleep, it'salmost as if the brain is too heavy on the emotional accelerator pedal, withoutenough brake," Walker said.

Listening to Our Emotions, Feelings as Sources of Information for Success andWell-being: We’ve recommended Marc Brackett’s Permission to Feel:Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and OurSociety Thrive (2019), but you may not have time to read it now. Given itsimportance, we share a shorter article that explains how “our feelings provideimportant information that can change our lives for the better when we giveourselves permission to feel them” (Permission to Feel, Psychology Today,2019). The important take-away is that listening to and understanding our
