The writings on worship emphasise God’s Holiness and the importance of coming before the Lord in the right way. In Numbers, a range of events acts as a reminder to remain focused on the Lord. REFLECTIONS – Books with Challenges Hi, all - I hope you are dealing with the winter well. At least we have passed the shortest day and the days are getting longer. From 20 September the daylight hours will exceed the night-time ones, and I look forward to that! During this dreary and cool time, I have been working my way through Leviticus and Numbers as I keep to reading a chapter a day. (I also have another set of readings I use for prayer). Wellington Women’s Retreat

My experience with the Women’s Retreat held on June 17-18 was refreshing and very much nourishing. I was hesitant to join the retreat since I am in a new environment and perhaps it was also one of the days I felt lazy to go out of the house since it was a weekend. The retreat was practical and the talks and sharing touched areas in our lives that are very real to us women. It has allowed me to see my situation in the perspective of warfare; a battle where I do not

necessarily have to stand back and watch, but it is a battle where, whether I choose to be in it or not, is already happening. Mhel, in her talks, described how God and how the enemy works to win us. The Lord works in ways that sometimes seem uncomfortable to us but in the end, allows our characters to be shaped ultimately after Him. It has allowed me to see several situations in my life right now that God allows to happen for me to fight for my faith and grow in maturity and my love for the Lord. I am amazed at how we, sisters, can be vulnerable to each other that we can share our deepest thoughts and emotions knowing that we would be understood and loved no matter what we choose to share. It is encouraging to know that I am not alone in fighting my battles. We, at some degree, experience the same concerns and that I have my sisters to turn to for comfort and encouragement when the battle seems tough and too much for me to handle.

Sheen Tungol The topic for the Women’s Retreat is “The Battlefield,” which is based on Ephesian 6 - we are in a spiritual war. We need to put on the armour, face the enemy, and fight. The talks given by Mhel left us in no doubt that we are in a spiritual battle. The battlefield can be in our minds or spoken words. We need to remember God created us the way we are - perfect. We want to travel the best road, but we experience the twists and turns of life. God can feel a long way away during these times, and God sometimes lets us experience this as He wants us to love Him for Him alone. Satan will use our weaknesses and these times to attack.

We need God's armour -read the Scripture – to enlighten our minds, create good habits, and spend quiet time with the Lord. Remember that Satan will creep in to use our weaknesses. God promises to be with us always. We have the power that God gave us. The battle is ongoing, but Jesus has won the war we have the victory in Him. THE PRIZE – BEING FOREVER WITH JESUS. I found the retreat uplifting, a joy to be a part of and a great blessing to be with sisters in the Lord. The hospitality was awesome, and the location was great. Coming from a small group the praise and worship and Mhel’s talks were so spiritually uplifting. Thank you to all who made the weekend possible.

AUCKLAND BRANCH NEWS Women’s Breakfast – Saturday 8th July On Saturday, it was delightful to see many of our sisters and some visitors gathered to pray and fellowship with one another at the Women’s Breakfast held at St Joseph's School. Mira led us into a lovely time of praise and worship and invited us to put everything in God’s hands and leave it with Him. Here are the few scripture verses quoted of God's promises to us in Jeremiah 28:11, Psalm 37:4, Joshua 1:9 and Philippians 4:13. These verse linked in well with Tili’s talk that followed on, "Dare to Dream.” The talk was very uplifting as she testified God's promises to us and how important it was for us to keep persevering in prayer even though our prayers are not answered in our time. God’s timing is perfect, but we need to keep on praying, believing and claiming His promises. The RAINBOW is a tangible sign of God's promise to us, affirming His love and promise never to leave nor forsake us, just like it was for Noah. She shared that in her own life, when she needed God's confirmation and answered to her prayers, He showed her a rainbow in different ways to confirm it for her and how excited she would be that God had confirmed the same. The message I took home from this is that God makes all our dreams come true if it is according to His Holy will and we should never cease to pray. The talk ended with a beautiful song, "Testify to Love".

Winter Oasis Youth Weekend – 9th to 11th July The just concluded Winter Oasis was a tremendous success with 21 young people from Community attending. The massive outreach done before the camp saw 28 children from outside Community attend to experience God. Below, Cassandra D’Souza talks about the experience that was Winter Oasis.

Winter Oasis, a youth camp for high school students Years 9 to 13, took place from 9th to 11th July this year at Camp Morley in Auckland. There were 49 participants and, thanks to some amazing evangelism by the community kids, 29 of them were from outside of the community. Being new did not stop any of the first-timers from fully participating from day one, especially during the Praise and Worship sessions. It was amazing to see them open to new experiences, raising their hands and praising God in tongues. For those of us who had been to Oasis in previous years, it was inspiring and motivating to see them so willing to be moved by the Spirit.

The three talks presented were insightful and revolved around the theme ‘Crossroads’, and its scripture, “For many are invited, but few are chosen”- Matthew 22:14. Thank you, Uncle John Tham and Nicole Lim-Kwan, Aunty

Maryanne Hall and Darren Humphries for respectively presenting the talks - The Invitation, Our Response and The Cost and Rewards. The talks were presented effectively and explained that God had invited everyone to the Kingdom of Heaven. We must respond by preparing ourselves while understanding the costs and rewards. The questions for discussions caused us to dig deep within our sharing groups and evaluate the way we currently prepare and respond to God’s invitation. The fellowship and organised team games were a great way to break the ice, make many new friends and get really muddy during a game of tug-of-war.

Thank you to Uncle Greg for the reflection on “The Our Father”, Rachael Martis for leading the Ministry time and Dwayne Lobo for conducting the Bible Study. Another big thanks to everyone who led a Praise and Worship, was on a music team or organised a morning prayer. Huge thanks to Uncle Colin and the kitchen volunteers, the UCO (University Christian Outreach) group & the Kairos team, who made sure everything ran smoothly ensuring that we could get the most out of the three days. You made a big difference to this camp, and we appreciate all the time you gave to help us on our journey with God.

Cassandra D’Souza

It was two years ago that I last went to Winter Oasis in Auckland, and so I was excited when I received the invitation to attend and give one of the three main presentations at this year's Winter Oasis. It took me back to the first Winter Oasis that I helped to organise at Camp Adair in the Hunua Ranges. As I reflected on that, I remembered how bitterly cold it was ice on the ground and hearing Fr John Rea give a presentation on deliverance and how to do it and the key things to know and understand when praying for someone for deliverance. It was given in one of the bunk rooms into which was crammed a whole bunch of young people eager to learn how to operate in the Holy Spirit. It was for me one of those learning moments, and I still have my notes from that first Winter Oasis, and my

Page 5: The Lamb of God Chronicle - Webs Lamb of God... · warfare; a battle where I do not necessarily have to stand back and watch, but it is a battle where, whether I choose to be in it

5

learning has served me well for many years. I also recall when the decision was made to move the camp to a new location at Camp Morley, and with it came less frost a new beginning and the formation of young people. I found myself giving thanks for the work that the Lord first began and has continued in the young people of Lamb of God and

Encounter Jesus. I found myself giving thanks for people like Karen Fine (Hopkins) Pogia, Telea, Tili, Talu, George, Logo, Joe and Anila and many more and how the Lord worked in and through them. It was a great delight to my heart to see Joe and Anila Collins attend this year's Winter Oasis and to see him encounter the Lord and the Lord Encounter Ethan and to see the Lord baptise in the Spirit and release him in tongues.

Some of the highlights for me were working with Jono Challies from Christchurch who led his first time of worship. It was a highlight for me both in preparing with him here in Christchurch and then to be his wingman as part of a Christchurch led music team. I have seen the Lord do some amazing things in Jono in his preparation and his leading and his participation in WO. I assumed a new name at WO – and that is DJH – pronounced ‘deejh’. Some of the guys are able to call me Dazza, but that is a name only available to a specific group. I had some awesome individual sharing with brothers and sisters both the young people and those who served with UCO and other people who are part of the branch. I was able to learn, teach, encourage, and be encouraged by the many many conversations with so many people. For at least 50% of them, they were people I did not know - what a blessing. The first two presentations were so on the money - not that I had expected anything too much different, but was so greatly encouraged by how the Lord had weaved the presentations together and was doing so for me as well. So it came time for me to speak – the theme of the Camp was ‘Many are called, few are chosen’ from Matthew’s Gospel. I sat and shared about the Lord’s work in my life and how he is calling us all total abandonment like Thérèse of Lisieux. In the middle of my presentation, I sensed the Lord say “you need to address matters of sexual purity with the young men and the young woman as well,” which I did. I continued talking about the call to live in the kingdom now and not seeing the kingdom as some reward at the end of our lives. There are times when you have just to put it out there and say what the Lord tells you to say and see what he does from there. I was also able to lead some folks after the dinner in praying for healing for a young man’s leg and how the Lord works in and through them to bring healing. I was blessed to be able to pray for baptism in the Holy Spirit and release in the gift of tongues for some young men along with my brother Elias Martis from the Auckland branch and pray with some others in the evening session. This seemed to simply open the flood gates as I was able to gather a group of young men after lunch on the last day on the balcony and we prayed together for the release in tongues, and there were I think 6 or 7 men release in tongues. Well, that was not the end; there were two more brothers who were prayed for and release in tongues – on the bus on the way back from the camp to Christ the King Church, and we had an opportunity to all pray in the spirit together in the back of the bus. This was apt as we prayed for those who were involved in a car accident which had delayed our journey. By the time I got back to the church, I was pumped. What a totally amazing time of the Lord moving and allowing me to be part of that as well. Another highlight was prayer on the beach before 6 am when the moon was up and

spending time in prayer there. I give thanks to the Lord for the opportunity to serve him and the work the Lord did in so many who went to winter oasis this year. I am greatly encouraged by what I see in Encounter Jesus and bonus was that there were 20 connected to EJ/Lamb of God and then invited 30 additional people to come – praise God from whom all blessings flow.

CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH - SHARING On a wing and a prayer, mixed with a generous dose of youthful exuberance, we departed the sunny & sandy shores of Goa, India, with our two children aged 5 and 3, to make our way to the charming and serene city of Christchurch, New Zealand. It’s hard to imagine contrasts starker - India & New Zealand. We’ll let you figure that one out. Leaving behind close-knit immediate and extended families, good friends, great neighbours, vibrant church-life and a successful family business was always going to be a big call. On hearing of our decision to immigrate to NZ, Tony & Rufina D’Souza (relatives and leaders of a covenant community in Mumbai), introduced us to the Lamb of God Community, Christchurch. We trusted their recommendation; we knew the D’Souzas were living their lives in the Lord’s vineyard. Roger Foley was prompt and enthusiastic in his emails and gave us a vivid description of what lay ahead of us. We were warmly welcomed at the airport by a large crowd, enjoyed Veronica’s dinner in their home, our first evening in NZ. We were blessed to share the home and hospitality of Philip and Alison Middlemiss while getting settled in our new way of life. Charismatic worship was work in progress, as we had very limited exposure in this area. But, we began a journey of formation that was buttressed by witnessing the fruits of living ‘Life in the Spirit’ within the community. We began to let the Lord into every realm of our lives - home, work, financial and all other decisions. Our burdens began to lighten as we began to understand that the Lord was walking with us and we could trust Him fully, in everything. We built close bonds with our fellow brothers and sisters in Community. Our children have since doubled in number and have strong friendships with the other community-kids. It is only by God’s grace and the prayers of many that we have been privileged to know, to be loved by and to share our lives with some pretty awesome folk. To those that have given us your time and energy, opened your homes and your hearts, we wish to say ‘Deo borem korum’ – God bless you. Looking back 15 years ago, it’s been an extraordinary ride, and we’re so glad we made the journey here.

Update from Bea Vargas

Hi, everyone! I'm sorry it took me so long to write down this letter. I guess I've been avoiding it because I was afraid. Part of starting fresh in a new place is letting go of what you had. The truth is I don't want to let go of New Zealand, but I did need some time to understand that things have changed one more time. It doesn't matter how many times you have had to let go, you always what to keep everything for as long as possible. I'm just happy I could finally understand that living in a new country, with a new community doesn't include having to let go of you guys, but it does mean things are not the same. I'm writing just to say thank you for having me and for putting up with my American accent and cultural differences. But mostly for teaching me your culture and showing me that family is where you have someone to count on. I got to New Zealand with two bags of clothes and, not only had I left with three bags but also with sisters, brothers, friends and role models to look up to. I want you guys to know that even though I might take a while to reply over and email or Facebook, please write. I love getting updates about how everyone is doing and letting you know what I'm up to. I might or might not see you again, only God knows, but I'm still a click away! One more time thanks to every one of you for being part of my life and my kiwi experience. I absolutely loved it.

With a huge hug from North Ireland, Bea

PHOTOS – MEN’S RETREAT IN WELLINGTON A few good men assembled in Petone last 24 June to pray, reflect, and listen to God. The theme of the retreat was “Dying to Self to Serve Others.” The brothers heard about their mission to deny their selfishness and self-centeredness so that God can use them in building His Kingdom here on earth. The sessions concluded with the brothers praying for each other so that God can use them in their homes and workplaces to see God’s reign to flourish wherever they may be.

CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY Resource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes

Is Life Diminishing or Advancing? September 2017

Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light

momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison… [2 Corinthians 4:16B-17 ESV]

In 2013, both my parents died a few months apart. My brother-in-law said to me, “we are next in line.” He made me realise that sooner or later, just like anyone else, death will knock on my door. In my whole life, I have also seen the passing away of many relatives and friends. I can see my body getting more wrinkly, slower, and sickly. It looks like life is slowly diminishing. On the other hand, my life in God is advancing – as I get more mileage in life, my salvation is getting nearer that when I first believed [see Romans 13:11]. My blessed hope, my ultimate joy, my priceless treasure, my greatest dream, and my greatest purpose in life – to go to heaven and see God face to face – is getting closer day by day. Yes, my earthly life is fading, but my life with God is progressing. How about you – do you experience the same irony as well? So What Do You Do Now, Knowing Your Life is Both Diminishing and Advancing in Different Ways? 1. Take good care of your physical well-being. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. [1 Corinthians 9:25 ESV] Aim to have a regular exercise. Visit your doctor regularly. You only have one physical body – take care of it well! 2. Do not lose focus on life. Life can be very challenging, and different trials can throw a spanner on your focus. Keep your eyes dead-set on heaven, no matter what. Do not compromise heaven! 3. Be renewed in the Spirit regularly. Invite the Holy Spirit to draw close to you. Shed away the sins that cling close to you – see Romans 12:1. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. [James 4:8] 4. Build spiritual treasures, not earthly ones. How? Focus on loving God and serving His people. Become Christ-like. Be generous with your material things, especially to those in need and your brothers and sisters. Share the gospel in season and out. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. [Galatians 6:9-10 ESV] Share the gospel with others. 5. Be ready to “go” any time the Lord calls you. Settle all finances, insurance, wills, and trusts, so that those whom you will leave behind can carry on living well after you have gone. Leave all your earthly attachments behind. Travel light as a transient in this earthly life; your real home and destination is still to come. 6. Never give up and lose hope! Stand your ground to the end. Expect hardships and suffering to come in your way with God on this side of eternity. Sin and temptations will not stop bothering you until your last breath. When all is said and done, look forward to the day that you can say, “It’s all worth it – all the troubles and all the sufferings that life can throw at me – because heaven is my home and my reward.” OTHER SCRIPTURE PASSAGES: 1. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. [2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV] 2. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. [Romans 13:11B ESV] 3. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." [Revelation 21:4 ESV] 4. Other references: 2 Timothy 4:7-8; Romans 8:18; Matthew 6:19-21; and 1 Timothy 6:17-19. FOR REFLECTION OR SHARING:

In your life, do you experience both its physical recession and spiritual growth? In what ways?

What is the one thing that can make you give up and lose hope in your spiritual journey?

PRAYERWATCH SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, ARISE Fight the good fight. Reinforce the guard, station the watchmen, prepare an ambush! The Lord will carry out his purpose, Jeremiah 51: 12 NIV Over the past year, I have looked at the attributes that a soldier needs to have to carry out his duties in the army and how it affects us as Soldiers of Christ. Discipline, self-control, commitment, perseverance, sacrifice, loyalty, submission, and service are all part of the package that makes up a good soldier, especially a soldier of Christ. Without discipline, we are a rabble with no direction and follow our own whims, and as Christ’s soldier, we need to have a set time to study God’s word, to pray and to gain the strength of the Holy Spirit we need as we are on duty all the time. As we are a soldier of Christ 24 hours a day and are on show in all we do, self-control is a must as we either reveal Jesus to all we have contact with, or hide our light/lamp under a jar or a bed [Luke 8: 16]. May God’s people read the clear teaching of the Bible and live its message [the fifth Gospel] that we testify that the Living Word has been clearly written on our very hearts. The world does not need us. The world needs Christ in us. The world needs churches where Christ is tangibly present. As Jesus soldier’s we need to have the commitment and be able to persevere in living this way of life we are called to as those around us need to see the good news of God’s kingdom. As a ‘Community of Disciples on Mission,’ we need to have loyalty to our commander, Jesus and our fellow members. We must sacrifice all we have, all we do and

all we want for the Kingdom of God as members/soldiers of the army of light in this world of darkness. As soldiers of Christ, we need to submit all we have and all we do to our commander in chief, Jesus, so the Kingdom of God will advance. Finally, all we have and all we do needs to be at the service of Jesus in the Kingdom of God that light may flood the darkness and evil of this world. In the Lamb of God, the duties of a soldier of Christ includes standing in the gap on the Prayerwatch, so we are building a spiritual wall around a ‘Community of Disciples on Mission’ to protect us from the darkness and the ways of the world surrounding us. This spiritual wall surrounds a place of refuge and a place with a special way of life that is a beacon of light in the world of darkness. In Ephesians 6: 10-18, Paul warns us the battle is spiritual and to put on the armour of God and to stand with Jesus Christ, in his power as we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us [Philippians 4: 13]. Soldiers of Christ, Arise, and put your armour on, strong in the strength which God supplies, through His eternal Son. If you have any comments or questions concerning the Prayerwatch, then please send them to me or give them to one of your branch leaders to send to me. God bless and watch over you all.
