Our community PBS member station, KNPB, serving northern Nevada and northeastern California, is proud to take part in the KNPB PBS KIDS Writers Contest.
Few things can capture a child’s imagination like a good book. KNPB PBS KIDS Writers Contest invites children, kindergarten through third grade, in communities across our area to use their boundless imaginations to create original stories and illustrations and then submit them to their local PBS station. This year, more than a thousand children from northern Nevada and northeastern California participated in the KNPB PBS KIDS Writers Contest, building their creative voices, and developing critical reading and writing skills.
Visit our website at knpb.org/writerscontest to find out more about the contest, read the winning stories and watch the winners announce their stories.

“The Girl who Traveled to England!” by BrookeNancy Gomes
Elementary School
Once there was a girl who traveled all over the world. Her name was Emma and she was
going to England for a week. She was really excited to see the clock named Big Ben. Emma had a pet
cat that she traveled everywhere with, named Sophia.
What many people didn’t know was that Emma was a spy that went on missions
around the world. This trip, however, was for vacation.
When she arrived in England, Emma went on a mission. She started
looking at all of the beautiful buildings around her. When she got to
her final destination she discovered that Big Ben was missing! Emma was so sad because the clock was
not where it should be. She set out to find the thief and missing clock.
She followed the tracks leading from the crime scene. The tracks
ended at a large building. When Emma went inside she saw her enemy, her grandmother! She had gone to the
dark side many years before. She saw her sitting on a couch
looking at Big Ben.
“Why did you do it, Grandma?” asked Emma. “My eyes are getting bad,” she
answered. “I need a bigger watch!” “You can’t just take things!”
I responded. Suddenly, she started throwing cookies to distract Emma and made an escape.
Emma returned Big Ben to its original place. She was happy that
she finally got to see Big Ben! Emma took a couple of pictures to remember
her trip to England. She went home and told her mother about her trip. She wondered if she would see her
Grandma on her next trip. . . .
