History

• Evolved from a lawn game in 15th Century in Northern Europe and France

• Known as “Noble Game of Billiards” since 1800’s

• Pool tables originally had flat walls for rails.• Billiard is derived from French “Billart”

– One of the wooden sticks

Terminology(alphabetical)

• Break – Player shoots into racked balls to start the

game• Bank Shot

– Object ball is bounced off bumpers during shot.

• Ball in Hand– Placing cue ball wherever he wants for

next shot.• Corner Pockets

– Pockets at the four corners of the pool table.

• Chalk– Used on cue tip to provide better grip on

cue ball.• Cue Ball

– White ball that is hit by the cue stick to make contact with the other balls.

Rules

• 8 Ball– 1 cue ball– 15 numbered object

balls– Racked with 8 ball in

center of triangle– Stripe ball in one corner;

solid in the other

• 9 Ball– 1 cue ball– 9 object balls numbered

1 through 9– Lowest number ball

struck first– Nine ball pocketed to

win.

Spin Techniques• English

– Side spin positioned on the cue ball, in which the cue ball is hit left or right of the center

• Follow– Spin in direction of cue ball

causing it to spin faster than usual

• Draw– Backward spin on cue ball.

C = Center   6:00 = Low   12:00 = High   9:00 = Left Spin

3:00 = Right Spin

Advanced Techniques

• The Masse Shot– Forces high level spin horizontally and vertically

that causes the cue ball to curve sharply or even at different directions without having to touch another ball or rail.

• The Jump Shot– Causes the cue ball to jump in the air legally.

Legally means to hit the cue ball above the middle and drive it down into the table.
