P a s t o r ’ s Vi e w

Dear Friends, God has given us such an amazing life to share with one another and our surrounding communities, and all who are participating in our Year of Prayer are seeing the amazement multiply. Please join us in the following prayer ministries and prayers of celebration:

1) Prayers of thanks for our Lenten member speakers, for our countless Holy Week member organizers and servants, for Kelly's love and leadership (sending service Sunday, April 30), for member Darlene Thorson's 33 years of service to our Preschool (celebration luncheon Sunday, May 7), for newly baptized and confirmed members, Cruz Dearing, Isaac Whitehouse, and Katie Hoaglund.

2) Summit! - Our next first Friday monthly Prayer Summit is next Friday May 5, 7-9 pm in the sanctuary. If possible, please attend, believing that God's promise is true: God's presence, direction, and power are made available to us through prayer in Jesus's name. The prayer focus of this Summit will be praying for those who don't know Jesus as the only Way to an abundant and everlasting life with God. Please join us in serving Jesus's Great Commission to us which starts with Saving the Lost through prayer and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

3) Praying Shepherd Teams - As energy and encouragement are flowing into staff through prayer teams that have begun to pray for and walk with our staff, Pat Loyacano is working with our Evangelism/Discipleship ministry to form teams who will commit to praying for and loving on a group of households based on where people live. Please contact Pat (205-706-0709) if you'd like to join us in serving Jesus's Great Commission to us which continues with Pastoring the Saved through prayer and loving each other with the good news of Jesus Christ.

4) 40th Anniversary prayers -- Please submit your written prayers for God's continued transformation of our congregation for our 40th Anniversary prayer booklet. You may turn them in to Wendi in the church office (205-988-5004). It is a great encouragement to our members to see other members' hearts in prayer. Our congregation's 40th Anniversary is Pentecost Sunday, this year falling on June 4. We will intentionally celebrate our 40th year of ministry from June 4, 2017 to Pentecost 2018 in big and small ways.

5) PITCH - Having been told personally that a number of households are holding onto written prayers that come from our church, the Holy Spirit put on my heart to form a team and begin sending regular (and eventually daily) prayers to all who would receive them. PITCH (Prayers In The Christian Home) will be a ministry to equip households to pray for the vision, mission, and objectives of our church, in addition to praying for the manifestation of the marks of a follower of Jesus living the new life opened to us through the forgiveness of sins and outpouring of Holy Spirit. Please contact me (205-401-2553) if you'd like to join us in serving Jesus's Great Commission to us which continues with Equipping the Pastored through training and loving each other with the good news of Jesus Christ.

6) Please pray for Charter member Tom Nelson who will preach on May 28, focusing on God's work in and through our congregation these past 40 years (even as I'm at the church I grew up at in Tennessee, preaching for their 100th anniversary on that Sunday).

7) Please pray for our Children's Ministry and Evangelism Committee as they're collaborating on a Saturday, June 3 food and fun celebration that will be open to us and our surrounding community to share the Gospel of Jesus in word and deed, along with our personal testimonies and our church's vision, mission, and objectives.

8) Please pray about your Extra-Mile gift to Our 40th Mission Challenge which every year celebrates our birthday by helping start Gospel ministries in other places. Our Missions Committee has agreed on two $4,000 (40 x 100) Mission Challenge projects, one of which will open the door to our partnering long term with a Birmingham city church.

9) 500th - As a Lutheran Church that values the historical substance of being Lutheran (1--salvation for the abundant and everlasting life by God's grace through faith in Jesus and 2--the preeminence of Holy Scripture), we're beginning to plan a celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther's posting of the 95 Theses on the Castle Church Door in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517. Please let me know if you'd like to be involved.

10) Amanda and I are heading to the LCMC Leadership Conference on Discipleship in Omaha, Nebraska this Sunday through Tuesday after stops this week for Amanda's work round table and for assisting my mom with some family things.

11) Mike and Sarah Harfield's SS class et al have been meeting with Launch Global's Executive Director Bob McNabb as Evangelism/Discipleship Ministry continues to spearhead plans for Fall Discipleship groups.

12) Our Latino Outreach April 18 on "Who is Jesus?" was attended by 5 participants and lead by our member Ernesto Osorio along with the Dearing family (for children in attendance) and myself. May 9 is the next Latino Outreach at 6 pm at church.

13) Jail Ministry, which strengthens our members in learning to share God's Word, their testimony, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our community, has two new participants in Marquita Kirkland and Joy Dearing with the next fellowship dinner on May 15 at the DeGreens and training on May 20. We now have 14 trained members, most of whom regularly serve at our jails, most notably our octogenarians Gene Murray and Audrey Hains.

Children’s Ministry

Kid’s Pj Prayer Time Friday May 5th, 2017

Recap from last month: We got things moving with some music then the little folks walked through Psalm 23 and played the Praise God A-Z game. We made prayer stones as little reminders for prayers. We finished up the night with milk and cookies then prayer circle.

These little folks were so open and eager to pray with and for each other! We can't wait to see what Papa God has instore for them as we continue, as a family, to raise them up and disciple their sweet spirits and uplift their individual gifts.

THIS MONTH Friday May 5th, 2017

Kid's Pj Prayer Time - May 5 th from 7-9:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. This pairs with monthly Prayer Summit and will allow parents the opportunity to join the grownup summit. Please have children wear their PJs and get ready for some fun! We have lots fun planned for the kids learning through music, crafts, games, snacks, and fellowship. We pull it all together at in prayer circle and get closer to Papa God through prayer. Our Theme is the 10 Commandments (Ten Ways to be Perfect- Exodus 16–17, 19–40 - Jesus Storybook Bible).

Immediate Needs: Prayer Team for this ministry.

Big Folks willing to be active family members leading and loving kids.

MUSIC! We would love to have one of our own family members to take this on (we have had to access outside help in the past) this is 30 minutes, once a month.

Stuff that would add to the ministry:

Donations for craft & art supplies for prayer journals, snacks, a large circular tablecloth.

Homemade cookies!

Thank you everyone for joining hands, leading, loving, and living as a family.

Susan & the children's ministry team

Born and raised in Mt. Eden KY, a rural town where hunting dogs and horses way outnumbered the

human population. I spent a lot of time playing in the creek, playing softball and exploring with

my dog. I relocated to AL week before Christmas 1998.

I met and married Philip in Culinary school. After obtaining my degree, with honors, I worked in

restaurants working from line cook to chef. Now I own my own artisan baking business and sell at

local farmers markets.

We have 3 children, Whitney, who is off on here own, Isaac, a sophomore in college, and Cruz

who I homeschool.

I love being at CtK and it's people - my new family. I am loving getting to know all the children

and their families and I appreciate all those who have welcomed me as I have begun to settled

in. I am working hard to get to know all my new family members, if we haven't officially met,

please introduce yourself and grant grace as I strive to remember everyone's names!

I look forward to joining hands with all of you, living and loving as a family.

Hola niños!

This last week has been another very full one for me! I go to school for 4 hours every day that you go

to school (so I get to rest on the weekends too!). That sounds like not a lot of time right? Well what

if you had to start all over and learn all about your letters and numbers, how to read and how to talk?

That’s what I’m doing in Spanish school. My brain gets tired after only those 4 hours because I am

used to talking and thinking in English! None of my teachers know English very well, so I always have

to speak Spanish. Even at my house here, the family only speaks Spanish! If I need a fork or new tow-

els, I have to ask for them in Spanish!!

But it’s definitely helping me learn very, very fast! I know some of you are learning Spanish at school,

so maybe we can practice together!

I want to tell you guys about one of the projects Principio does. Did you know that the water that

comes out of the sink here is bad to drink? And the water in the ground is dirty too? That means

that we have to buy our water here in big containers from the place that cleans the water for us. But

in some places, like the mountains where my clinic is, we need to clean the water ourselves. We have

special filters that help us with that.

In some of the villages around us though, they don’t have the special filters. The have to drink the

dirty water. And it makes them very sick. This makes Jesus and me and my friends at Principio very

sad. We wanted to help our friends in those places get clean, healthy water. So we taught some Hon-

durans how to make the special filters. Now, they are building them and taking them to the places

where before there was only dirty water. Now they have clean, clean, clean water! Now they won’t get

sick when they drink it! Now they have good life!

I got to go to one of these places a few weeks ago. We took them some special filters. While the

workers were setting them up, the rest of us talked with the people that lived there. Our conversa-

tions led to us asking them to pray with us.

This makes me think of a story about Jesus in the Bible. Do you remember a story where Jesus

talked to someone about water? It’s in the book of John. Jesus says, “The water that I will give him

will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” What do you think that means?

Well, why is water so important anyway?

Because without it we will die! We use it to drink, to cook, to wash our bodies, and our clothes! It is

the most important thing for living!

And Jesus says that His water is important for our eternal lives!

So when me and my friends with Principio take physical water to our friends, we also take them Spir-

itual Water….the kind that only comes from Jesus! Now they have both kinds of life! What do you

think?

I love y’all,

Calley

Child Development Center

Happy Almost Summer for Christ the King Child Development Center! By the time you read this, we

will have had our Big Event for April...our Annual Art Show and Luncheon. A HUGE "Thank You" goes to

our CTKCDC committee members who helped, especially Judy Novack. And also "Thanks AGAIN!" to

our favorite chef Bob Kasper who made our faces and tummies happy.

Please know that the Child Development Center is always thankful and grateful for the support of

congregation members. If you or anyone you know is looking for a part-time or almost full-time job

with the job description: "loving, teaching, caring for, and mentoring God's little people"...please let us

know!

Lastly, it has been an honor being your Children's Ministries Director and recently your Child

Development Center Director over the past several years. We have done some wonderful things

together and I appreciate each of you who have in some way helped the children who walk through the

doors of CTK each week. I have decided that it is now time to pass the torch to another person.

Please find out how you can support your new CTKCDC director. I am certain that the Child

Development Center and the staff at your day school would be glad to know that you are here for

them!

Lastly, a favorite closing prayer: May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

The rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God be with you and bless you:

May you see your children's children.

May you be poor in misfortune,

Rich in blessings.

May you know nothing but happiness

From this day forward.

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home

And may the hand of a friend always be near.

May green be the grass you walk on,

May blue be the skies above you,

May pure be the joys that surround you,

May true be the hearts that love you.

Dear Christ the King Congregation Members,

He is risen! He is risen indeed! I hope each of you have experienced a wonderful Easter season and took

the opportunity to be part of a group discussing the book on transforming prayer. As a congregation, we

were blessed by several of our church family who courageously shared not only their thoughts on the

book, but shared their own vulnerabilities in their personal walk with Christ in today’s world. The world

does not make serving easy and it is our response to Christ’s call on our lives and the work of the Holy

Spirit that spurs us on to serve when everything in the world tells us we are “not worthy to serve”,

“don’t have time”, or “I’m just not gifted”. If you are fearfully and wonderfully made by the God who

knows the number of hairs on your head, you must realize WE ARE ALL GIFTED TO SERVE!

We will all greatly miss Kelly Mongoven as she is now called to serve in Florence, Kentucky at Hopeful

Lutheran Church. She has been obedient to the call of God on her life and leads as an example for all of

us that we never know when or where God will call us, but we are to be ready and willing to go when

HE does! Even though miles will separate us, we will all continue to serve alongside each other in the big

“C” Church as we move forward.

The Child Development Center will be saying good-bye to Director Christy Ethridge after 2 years of

service and Darlene Thorson who has decided to retire after 33 years of caring for infants and toddlers in

the program and our church. That is dedication! Please express your appreciation to each of these ladies

for their dedicated service to our littlest ones. There will be an opportunity to celebrate “Ms. Darlene” on

May 7 after the 10:40 service.

Please support and pray for our summer mission trips to Mexico and Camp Noah to West Virginia that

to this point have around 30 members participating!

The Nominating Committee will begin meeting and preparing for a new Council to begin service August

1, 2017. If you would like for someone to be considered for a Council position, please submit his/ her

name to Mimi Avery, Janet Bedsole, Bob Bender, Bob Kasper, Chris Sedlacek, Kelly Tessman, or Senior

Youth Representative Katie Manak.

As transitions take place in our church family, find the place that you are being called to serve. It may be

a large commitment for you or a small one, but what matters is the impact it may have on someone else!

As always, please bring any ideas or concerns to any member of Council and we will be happy to help

you.

Blessings,

Mimi Avery

The Helping Hands Ministry is looking for a few

volunteers, to help coordinate and serves lunches here

at the church. Post-funeral receptions offer guests and

family members a chance to spend time together and

remember the person who died in a more casual

setting. For many people, these events are a more

comfortable environment for remembering the person

who died and spending time with friends.

each day at 3:33 to pray, “Lord please bring/

continue revival in this nation and your church, and

start/continue your revival in me.”

40 Days of Prayer

As God has led us in this chapter of our life in Christ,

May Memory Verse:

(Underlined is for 3 years & younger)

“Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is

right.” -- Ephesians 6:1

Prayer Service

The second Sunday of every month

during our 5 pm worship time we have a

prayer and healing service. This service

consists of worship songs, guided

personal prayer, an opportunity for

prayer requests and the laying on of

hands, and communion. We believe that

God honors all of our prayers and that it

is critical for the life of a church and a

Christian to set aside time to pray.

Prayer gives us the opportunity to

become in step with the presence of God

in our lives. If you have never come to

this service, please join us on the Second

Sunday of every month to worship and

pray.
