Hello, my friends.
As I sit here writing this article, my heart is heavy and my eyes are filled with tears. Once again, a person filled with hate for the Jewish people has done the unthinkable. He has chosen to murder eleven and injure at least 4 individuals because of his hatred and selfishness. I send out prayers to the congregants of Tree of Life Synagogue (Etz Chaim) and the Pittsburgh officers who were killed or injured in a senseless act of violence. Too much hate and anger exists in our world today. STOP! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! My heart aches for our people and all the people who experience such cruelty and violence against them. In this week’s Torah portion, Vayera, we learn about how our actions and choices, not only affect our own lives, but also, the lives of everyone we engage with. God’s message is “not to eradicate the evil doer, but wipe out the evil from their

heart and turn them toward God in repentance.” How is it possible to turn around what is evil in one’s heart? Is it possible to reverse the hatred, the Anti-Semitism, xenophobia, the bitterness and the divisiveness felt in our country at this time? I am continually praying for peace to exist in our world. We all need to pray for our country, our government, and our world’s leaders to make peace happen, NOW. I invite all of you to attend services on Friday evening, November 2nd, at 7:30 p.m., to worship together, as we pray for answers to these many questions. Shabbat is a day of rest, relaxation and prayer, not one of violence, gunfire and death. SAVE THE DATE: Our Chanukah dinner will be at the temple on Sunday, December 9 at 5:00 p.m. *Please note the changes. Due to the popularity of this event, we have moved it back to the Temple instead of at the Goodman’s home. We greatly thank them for their hospitality

Shalom everyone!!!
I wanted to thank everyone for the love and prayers I received while out of town. I’m sorry the November issue of the Kibbitzer has gone out late, my trip up north had to be extended a week. But it’s done and we can get back to normal.
My holiday project is going well. The lay-away was paid for in the first month. I was able to get the kids a couple of toys each. I was able to get the aunt a gift card so she can get her hair done. Thank you to everyone for helping out.
My final step in the holiday project is putting together a food basket. If I could get folks to bring food item to Shabbat Services and pitch in that would be Awesome!! I’m hoping to have this complete by the second week of De-cember.
If you feel the desire to help, please contact Pene Obenour - [email protected] or 440-231-5754. Any small donation will be appreciated.
Were having Game Day Sunday November 18 @ 2pm. Bring a game to share and a guest. I had wonderful time at our last game day and am looking forward to this event. Come out and have some fun….

THE KIBBITZER
Are we safe in our temple? A relevant ques-
tion, a legitimate question, one that several members have been discussing after the Tree
of Life Synagogue killings in Pittsburgh. As a teacher, this has been a part of my
world for at least fifteen years. Kenston High School where I work, was built to be a “safe” school. The academic section of the building
can be sealed off from the public parts of the building. Once the school day begins you
cannot enter any of our buildings without waiting in a secure lobby for identification. Staff members wear photo I.D.’s and all visi-
tors have immediate background checks and are issued photo I.D. visitor passes to wear. Each building has dozens of security
cameras that can be accessed directly by the Bainbridge Township Police Department.
Staff and students have been trained in the A.L.I.C.E. defense system. Each classroom has an age-appropriate system to secure its
door. We have resource officers on the cam-pus.
So, are we safe when we come to wor-ship? Safety begins outside our building. We
are lucky to have a supportive community in Mentor. The police regularly park in our driveway to monitor traffic on Center Street.
Their presence lets people know that we are being monitored. Over the holidays we asked
them to give us special attention, and they did. We appreciate their security watch. Dur-ing the holiday services, we have extra secu-
rity thanks to George Evangelista. He is an experienced security guard and policeman,
and is armed. George is either in the parking lot watching who enters or sitting in our lob-by.
All of the doors to Temple Am Shalom are kept locked when we worship. If you are late
to services, ring our doorbell. You’ve probably seen me get up and look out the window. My
phone has an ap that alerts me when there is motion at our door. Renee and I also get noti-
fications when we are not at the Temple, and
we can turn on the camera and see who is on the stoop. We also have a security system
that we set when we leave. So, you should feel secure when you are here.
Can we do more? We can always do more, but cost is a factor. It was pointed out that a panic bar on the front door would be better
than our current lock. It would also allow people to leave and it would re-lock. This is
something the Board will consider at our meeting November 7. It should be fairly inex-pensive, but in reality, glass doors are not
very secure. We could replace the doors with attractive metal doors, but this is more ex-
pensive. Because of my school experience, I’ve actually
sat in the sanctuary and thought about how we could make it more secure. We have solid doors in back that could be closed and
locked, but then getting to the restroom would be a challenge. We could add a set of
doors from the lobby to the hall into the sanc-tuary. This may be costly, but do-able. Final-ly, we could build a safe space on the stoop in
front of our doors. This could be pretty expen-sive.
Renee, the Board, and I would like to hear your thoughts on this, so please join us after
the Shabbat Service Friday, November 2 for a community discussion about Temple Am Shalom’s security. Most importantly, don’t be
afraid to join us. Hiding at home is no way to deal with this issue. P.O.P. Pride, Optimism,
Participation. Andy

NEW MAILBOX
You may have noticed that we have a new mailbox mounted on the right side of our front door. Beginning November 1, we will no longer be using our post office box number. Please address all Temple Am Shalom correspondence to 7599 Center Street Mentor, OH 44060. The change was made to save over $200 a year. Our original reason for switching to a post office box was because we were losing mail. Part of that may be because we are only around a couple days a week to pick it up. Our new box is lockable, so the mail goes in the top and we have to unlock it to empty it. So, beginning November 1, be sure to use our “new” old address.
#ShowUpForShabbat
Temple Am Shalom is planning on honoring the memory of those who died in the Pittsburgh Synagogue
shootings and the Kentucky shootings
at Friday’s November 2 Shabbat
service at 7:30 PM.
We also plan to add the wounded
police officers to our healing prayer
list.
A discussion will follow the service.
ALL are welcome.
