2011-2012 Meet Raegnar Bartolo President of our new Club in-formation

“ Who are you? I’m Raegnar (Rain) Bartolo, a junior at Wil-

son High School. I moved from Torrance, California earlier

this year and I as a part of the Narbonne Key Club of Division

-19 South of CNH( Cali-Nev-Ha) District. When I moved to

Portland I expected to see a Key Club, but to my surprise

there wasn't.

How did you start the process?

Before I moved here I talked to a good friend of mine,

Joyce Cho, my great mentor who is now the President of my

old club. She mentioned that every Key Club must have a

Kiwanis sponsor. After researching to find a Kiwanis Club in

Portland, I had a hard time. But writing this now obviously proves that I was wrong.

When I discovered the Facebook page of the Kiwanis Club of Portland, I immedi-

ately looked for the albums and I saw the KEY CLUB PICTURES! I then Google it and

found the Division 62 Key Club website. I found Giovanni McKenzie’s contact informa-

tion and sent an e-mail right away! Giovanni told me what I needed to know, step by

step. Answered my questions, dealt with my confusion and encouraged me more. I

saw in him his passion and dedication for his division. Happy and relieved that I have

someone to help me throughout the way!

What’s happening now?

Giovanni, Jim McAllister (our Area Administrator) and I are working

to complete the chartering process to make us an official club.

I’ve already recruited 17 potential members and wish to expand

our membership over the two months. Our acting board will have

its meetings on the first and last Thursdays of each month to organ-

ize meetings and write a progress report of the club. For service

hours, I’ve already managed to come up with 13 activities inside

and outside of school, assuming 5 of them will be in a regular basis.

For fundraisers, we have 3 ideas and still pending.

2011 DISTRICT PROJECT: KIWANIS CHILDREN CANCER PROGRAM

The Kiwanis Children Cancer Program was founded

by Governor Frank Morehouse of the Pacific North-

west District of Kiwanis International in 2010. Kiwanis

Governor Frank’s inspiration was a young cancer pa-

tient named Penny. Governor Frank worked at the

hospital where Penny stayed. Penny was diagnosed

with a brain tumor and would require surgery and ra-

diation therapy. Penny would visit Governor Frank

during her hospital stays and talk about what was

happening to her. Penny eventually lost her battle

with cancer. The KCCP is dedicated to Penny’s

memory.

The new Pacific Northwest Key Club District Governor,

Varun Awasthi saw the need for this project. Our Gov-

ernor made it his duty to ensure that Key Clubbers

across our district knew more about children’s can-

cer, and make our contribution to curing cancer.

How can you help?

The two greatest contributions you could make is to:

Help us educate

Help us fundraise

2011-2012 The ELIMINATE PROJECT eliminating neonatal & maternal tetanus

WHAT IF YOU COULD SAVE A BABY’S LIFE? There are few events more joyful than the day a new baby is

welcomed to the world. But in 38 countries, a dreaded dis-

ease quickly turns that joy into tragedy.

Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every

nine minutes — that's 60,000 babies every year who will never

grow up, make their mothers laugh, play with friends or dream

about the future. The effects of the disease are excruciating

— tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and ex-

treme sensitivity to light and touch. A significant number of

women die from MNT each year too.

$2 = Protection for mother

+ future babies

$1.80 (roughly) = 3 doses of tetanus vaccine
