Celebrating 50 Years “Serving the Industry Since 1965”
2015 KENTUCKY WOOD EXPO
T
he 31st Kentucky Wood Expo took place in Lexington, KY on September 18 & 19 at Masterson Station Park. This was
our second show in Lexington and we had excellent attendance from the industry. A big thanks goes out to the Parks and Recre-ation Department, for their assistance and cooperation during the week and the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau along with the Lexington community for all their support for the show. The Expo is conducted by the Kentucky Forest Industries Association to provide members an opportunity to see new technology and make purchasing decisions.
The weather was perfect Friday and Saturday which brought an estimated attendance of 3,500 visitors through the show from over 10 states. The industry crowd was excellent with a number of exhibitors making contacts and selling equipment.
This year’s Wood Expo was a huge success thanks to many of our members and partners throughout the forestry community. The show featured a number of new events that not only drew in additional attendees but also provided many educational benefits and additional things to do while at the show. A huge thank you goes out to the University of Kentucky Forestry Department for all of their efforts to assist with conducting the lumberjack competi-tions, educational events and supply-ing much needed labor for the Show. A shout out also needs to go to the Kentucky Division of Forestry for their support of the Wood Expo by helping with the set up and competitions in the arena. The industry is lucky to have such excellent partners to support forestry and the wood industry in Kentucky.
In addition to the educational events the lumberjack arena had a full slate of activities between the FFA forestry competition and the Collegiate Conclave. On Friday afternoon the show hosted a celebrity lumberjack competition between 4 person teams representing the Lexington

Police Department and Winchester Police Department. The winning team came from the Winchester Police Department.
On Saturday the arena was busy with the college student competition with teams competing that represented the University of Kentucky, University of Tennessee and West Virginia University. After a full day of events including an axe throw, sawing and chopping the Universi-ty of Tennessee was declared the winner with the most points and took home the
coveted trophy as the champions of the Wood Expo conclave events.
University of Kentucky Forestry Department had included several educational activities that took place in addition to the usual logger training. A forest landowner webinar was attended by several along with many other educational opportunities covering chainsaw safety, urban forestry, tree identification and a wide range of other topics. Also the cutting board program was a huge success giving away over 265 cutting boards and added to the 2015 show more than 110 bird feeders to those in attendance that were willing to sit through a brief pro-gram. The program explained the value of the wood industry to the state’s economy and then offered an opportunity to route, sand and finish an actual wood product. All of these new activities helped to make the show even bigger and better in Lexington.
Music was provided both days from Tanner Horton & Friends. Tanner is the stepson of KFIA President Darrin Gay, Gay Brothers Logging & Lumber in Oneida, KY. Tanner has a love of bluegrass and country music and showed his talent to those in attendance.
New to the show this year was a Chainsaw Carving Competition where 7 carvers competed by designing the perfect piece to submit to a live auction on Saturday. The piece that raised the most money determined the winner of the competition who was Sam Dunning, Benton, KY. The money was a 50/50 split with Log a Load for Kids raising $1,900 for the Kentucky Children’s Hospital.

FOREST PRODUCTS WEEK
IN KENTUCKY
October 18-24, 2015
N ational Forest products week was established by
federal legislation in 1960 to run yearly in October starting on the third Sunday of the month. This year we celebrate the importance of our industry and the many lives that it touches and the huge economic impact it has throughout the country. The state of Kentucky has also proclaimed the same forest products week in Kentucky to recognize the value to the state of the products wood industry. Special thanks to the Kentucky Division of Forestry for their work in getting the proclamation approved and publicized at the state level.
“Kentucky’s forests are a renewable natural resource, with forest products industries gener-ating and contributing a total economic impact of $12.8 billion to the state’s economy, employ-ing over 59,000 people,” said Gov. Beshear.
Kentucky is one of the lead-ing producers of hardwood forest products in the south and exports wood products across the nation and the world. This economic impact was generated from forests located in all 120 counties of the Commonwealth, providing resources harvested by over 1,800 logging firms and processed at 703 facilities located in 109 counties. These industries include sawmills, pulp and paper mills, and a wide variety of secondary producers such as cabinet, barrel, and flooring manufacturers.

LOCAL STUDENTS ATTEND EXPO
T he expo hosted around 500 elementary and high school students from surrounding counties of Lexington. The students attended the show
free of charge thanks to the generosity of members of K F I A. This is a small price to pay to help educate the next generation of leaders and consumers about the importance of forest products. Each year we receive a number of positive comments from schools and teachers about this program.
While at the Wood Expo, the younger students participated in activities designed to show the participants the value of forest products, the many ways that wood is used in our everyday lives, and the forest management practices used by the forest industry.
The high school students participated in an expanded FFA Program. They tried their hand at 10 different events ranging from tree and wood ID to log grading and measurement. They finished their day with a friendly lumberjack competition. We want to thank Michael Froelich,
Kentucky Division of Forestry for his organiza-tion and UK Department of Forestry for their participation in making this event a success and congratulate Whitley County High School for finishing in first place.
A number of exhibitors also participated in the event by providing industry related items and handouts for the school kids. We want to thank all the exhibitors and volunteers who worked with the kids program. Special thanks to Stacy White, UK Extension Service
for organizing the youth program.
We appreciate Larry Norfleet, Bobby Atkinson and George Crawford
from Somerset Wood Products and Amy Conley, Diamond Forest
Resources and Shane Middleton, Shane R. Middleton Trucking, for assisting students with guessing the weight of a log for a special FREE log guess. Ohio Valley Veneer supplied a log for the contest weighing in at 7,700 pounds. Mohawk/Columbia Flooring, Holden, WV sponsored a tablet for kids 13 and older and an MP3/video player for kids 12 and under. The winner of the tablet was Brandon Claxton from Whitley County High School with a guess of 8,160 lbs. and Alexis Nicole Jackson from Berea Community School won the MP3/video Player with a guess of 8,000 lbs. WATERS OF THE US RULE STAYED BY COURT
T
he national issue concerning the Waters of the US (WOTUS) which could increase regulations on many of the small streams
throughout the country and a heavy effect on logging has been put on hold by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals which issued a nationwide stay of the WOTUS rule by a vote of 2-1. This decision comes in a case that consolidated several actions brought by a total of 18 states seeking to overturn the rule and includes Kentucky as opposing the proposed rule.
The Court’s Order notes that there is still a question as to whether the Court has jurisdiction in these consolidated cases, an issue that will be resolved in the next several weeks. Nonetheless, the Order believes that a stay is warranted to preserve the status quo while the jurisdictional issue is sorted out.
The Order found that the states will likely succeed on the merits of the appeal based on three arguments: 1) the WOTUS rule’s distance limitations on the definitions of adjacent waters and waters having a significant nexus to navigable waters is not consistent with the Supreme Court’s Rapanos decision; 2) the distance limitations are not a “logical outgrowth” of anything that was in the proposed rule, in violation of the Administrative Procedures Act (APA); and 3) the rule is an inappropriate expansion of federal authority that improperly alters the federal-state balance of power in implement-ing the Clean Water Act. The Order noted that “the sheer breadth of the ripple effects caused by the Rule’s definitional changes counsels strongly in favor or maintaining the status quo for the time being.”
