The Gospel According to Greg Greg Taylor

[email protected]

On Sunday, toward the end of my message from Deuteronomy 8 on why “Remembering is

Essential,” I shared with you a pledge to the families of our church from our ministry staff. Time was short on Sunday, and I didn’t have the time to expand upon this pledge that I would

have liked, so here is a recap and further explanation:

Both Adam and Ernie, along with the Children’s and Youth Ministries of First Christian Church, are promising to help your grade school, junior high and senior

high students better understand the doctrines of FCC and the very most important aspects of the Christian Faith.

Ernie took a Sunday last November and went through a basic version of the “Six

Staples of FCC” – a study we do during all of our “Discover FCC” classes for new members and/or visitors. While this may seem too much information for a 1st

grader, we are committed to helping our grade school students better grasp who we are as a church.

This winter/spring, Ernie will also be putting together a Baptism class for grade

school students interested in becoming a Christian. Many of the students currently attending our church may not have grown up in our church – and thus may not

understand what we believe the Bible teaches about baptism by immersion. This class will serve as an excellent opportunity to learn what the Bible teaches about

baptism. If you have a grade school student who would be interested in attending such a class, let Ernie or Peggy know.

On Sunday evenings, our junior high and senior high students experience a 90

minute REVEAL service, consisting of worship, a message (usually from Adam), small groups and fellowship. We are regularly averaging between 50-70 students, and this

winter/spring, the theme is “Back to the Basics.” Adam and others will be teaching each week on the very most important aspects of the Christian faith. If you have

junior high and/or senior high students, I would strongly encourage you to get them to REVEAL each week – they will be blessed.

I am excited about this pledge and I would love to hear your feedback as well, either now, or as

the winter/spring unfolds. I also need to remind you to put this pledge into perspective. While this is very important, it is only part of the perfect situation for the families of our

church. If you are a parent or grandparent, or person of influence in the life of a grade school, junior high or senior high students, you are called to “pass on” the faith. You are called to

“impress upon” (Deuteronomy 6 language) your children and grandchildren the most important aspects of the faith and why being a Christian makes all the difference in the world.

You don’t have to hold a Master of Arts in Theology degree to tell others what an impact Jesus Christ has had on your life.

Blessings to you, and if you are participating in B90X, keep reading God’s word! We are in

week 3 – you can do it! See you Sunday as we study a judge named Jephthah and learn why “Good Theology Isn’t Optional.”

Greg

Young at Heart

David Buck, Coordinator

Our program for February 2nd will be a

fine piano player who is self-taught and

successful in his life. He has been here before

playing for us and was delightful. His name is

J. Morrow, from rural Clinton, and he has been

a fine example for many at his young age.

Then on the 16th of February we‟ll have our

friend Carol McFeeters Thompson who always

brings us something very interesting and

informative. Who knows what she will have

for us this time. “We pardon to the extent that

we love.” Frances De La Rochefoucauld

Our first trip of 2011 will be on

February 10, to Goodfield Barn #2 to enjoy

“Barefoot in the Park.” It‟s full of laughter,

and the food will be delicious, as usual. Then

on March 30th we‟ll travel to White Pines

State Park to see a show depicting Dolly

Parton‟s songs. The food will be excellent

also. Starved Rock is on the agenda for April

to a show and meal. In May we‟ll travel to the

Illinois River at Moline to enjoy the big bands

on the Celebration Riverboat. “Prayer is the

mortar that holds our house together.” Mother

Theresa

What a difference it makes in our

relationships when we magnify and bring out

the positive in people. It not only helps the

other people improve, but it helps us enjoy

them more, just as they are. This is my

command: Love each other - Jesus

If you ordered a Young at Heart calendar, you

can pick it up in the church foyer or the church

office. You may also purchase one for $6.00 if

you did not pre-order. The calendars will be

available in the foyer or the church office.

The time it takes to read 12 pages daily gives the Word the priority and position it

deserves in our lives.

The greater impact, power and benefit of reading this much of God‟s Word at a

time.

Some have not read through the whole Bible and this provides a plan, motivation

and the opportunity to do so.

The overview it gives to read the entire Bible in a short time (90 days) helps us see

it as a whole: God‟s redemption plan from start to finish.

Some have read their Bible regularly in the past, but aren‟t currently doing so and it

will encourage them to renew a daily time in God‟s Word.

Some have never read much, if at all, on their own in the Bible and it will

encourage them to begin a daily time in God‟s Word.

Reading God‟s Word changes us - the more we read, the more we change.

Most books of the Bible will be completely read in 1 or 2 days versus 1 or 2

chapters or a few verses at a time. This gives us a complete picture of each

individual book.

The whole church reading the same thing at the same time has many benefits: we

can more easily share with each other about what God is teaching us, be

accountable to each other, encourage one another…

Read the testimonies of others who have already completed the reading plan at

www.theBiblein90days.com.

Each individual should ask God if this is how they are to read God‟s Word

currently or if He has another plan for them at this time. The 90 day plan may not

be for everyone. Just make sure you have a plan and are in God‟s Word regularly!

A short term commitment is easier to keep than a long term one (we often fade in

April or May in reading through the Bible in a year).

To challenge those who read the Bible regularly already to a higher level of daily

commitment.

“There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation

through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way

or another – showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training

us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks

God has for us.”

2 Timothy 3:16,17: The Message Bible
