With their defense seeing them through, the Beavers defeated the Panthers by the score of 29-7 to advance to the State Semifinals for the second time in three years. “It was awesome to go home,” said Falls City head coach Steve Marbach, who graduated from Judson High School. “It looked different from when I was there. Offensively we made big plays but our defense held them to seven points. It was a monu- mental feat.” After a penalty on the open- ing kickoff against Burton, the Beavers forced the Panthers to re-kick. The re-kick resulted in an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Austen Camber, knocking just 16 seconds off the clock. Cody Jendrusch kicked the extra point to put Falls City’s lead at 7-0. Jendrusch was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra point attempts in the game. Burton countered with 2:14 left in the first quarter on a 2-yard run by Juwan Mathis. Mathis also kicked the PAT to tie it up at 7-7, which stood through the end of the first quarter. The Beavers retook the lead at the 11:55 mark of the second quar- ter as Cameron Soto connected with Dean Gaskamp on a 7-yard passing score to put the score at 14-7, which stood through- out the remainder of the second quarter. With 37 seconds left in the third quarter, Soto connected with Gaskamp again for a touch- down, this time on a 22-yard play. Rather than kick the PAT, Cody Houdmann took the snap out of the kicking formation and ran in the two-point conversion to extend the lead to 22-7. The final score of the contest came with 2:11 to play in the fourth quarter on a 52-yard run by Soto, putting the final tally at 29-7. Statistically, the Beavers gained 306 yards of total offense, with 255 yards rushing over 35 carries and 51 yards passing over five completions. By com- parison, the Panthers gained 346 yards of total offense, with 234 yards rushing over 46 car- ries and 112 yards passing over four completions. In terms of penalties, the Beavers were flagged seven times for 60 total yards and the Panthers were flagged 12 times for 72 total yards. In terms of turnovers, the Panthers were intercepted twice in the contest, both times by Gaskamp. “Dean made some huge plays throughout the game but the strength of our team is you never know who the guy is going to be each week,” said Marbach. “Burton’s counter game was good but we had a plan to slow them down. It was incredibly physical throughout the night.” This week, the Beavers will face the Tenaha Tigers in the Class 1A Division II State Semifinals. The game will take place on the northwest side of Houston at Berry Center Stadium in Cypress. Falls City is the designated Home team for the contest. “They won the state championship last year and con- sistently go deep in the play- offs,” said Marbach about the Tigers. “You don’t find yourself in the state semifinals if you’re not an excellent team. It’s going to take a full effort from us this week. They’re blazing fast, so we’re going to have to execute on our tackling.” Kickoff in Cypress is set for Friday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Beavers break Panthers, 29-7 Falls City to face Tenaha in state semifinals Corinne Sekula photo The Falls City Beavers enter the stadium in Converse Friday night for the state quarterfinals playoff against Burton. Three boys and their fathers participated in a youth hunt the weekend of November 30 - December 2, 2012. Gene Lyssy hosted the hunt for the Texas Youth Hunting Program on his prop-erty in Falls City. Texas Youth Hunting Program offers hunting opportunities to youth ages 9-17 who otherwise would not be able to experience the hunting tradition in Texas. The hunts are made possible by landowners like Lyssy who offer their wildlife resources to the youth. The hunts are conducted by certified huntmasters who run the weekend hunt in a safe, structured manner. Landowners are covered by liability insurance provided by TYHP. Youth must complete a hunters education course prior to participating in the program. Successful hunters on Lyssy’s hunt were Kyle Purdes and his father Michael Purdes, who went back to Houston with a big hog. Justin Gonzales harvested a doe with his father Luis Gonzales of San Antonio. Justin Shih of Sugar Land hunted with his father, Amos Shih, and harvested a doe and two hogs. Huntmasters for the hunt were Harry and Shirley Odell of Edna and David Sneed of Victoria. Landowners or youth who are interested in participating in the program may get informa-tion at http://www.tyhp.org/.

Basketball team’s record doesn’t reflect the hard work they’re putting forth. While the boys are 2-4, they hope to show the local public what they’re made of during the Karnes City JV Tournament this Saturday.

Last week, Dec. 4, the boys got an important

win over Pettus 48-12, with junior Earl Morin, who’s been battling a sore throat and stomach bug, pouring in 16 points.

The boys also faced some varsity teams dur-ing the Karnes City Varsity Tournament Nov. 29-Dec. 1, including Karnes City’s own varsity Badgers.

By Haleigh WarlickThe Badger bas-

ketball team got a key win against Pettus last Tuesday as it makes the shift from football to bas-ketball. The boys have had some struggles with a record of 1-5 as of last week, but are still keep-ing their heads high for district, which begins Dec. 18.

The boys struggled early, but got a key win

Tuesday, Dec. 4, against Pettus. Devontrey Forth led the team with 17 points and Paul Kinney chipped in another12 points in the win 69-46.

“Most of the kids are coming from football,” Head Basketball Coach Jeremy Gamez said. “And because we had such a great season of football, the playoffs ran into bas-ketball season. Other schools have had three

full weeks of practices and games. That being said our record really doesn’t reflect how good we could be.”

Another adjustment is a new coaching style, shifting from Coach Sean Armstrong to Coach Gamez.

“The kids are picking up the new system and are working hard,” Coach Gamez said. “It’s going to take some time to adjust

to the new way of playing, but things look promis-ing.”

Along with football this year’s team will have plenty of senior leader-ship, and some rising juniors and sophomores as well.

“This season should be really good,” senior Philip Vaughan said. “We have a group of guys that are real close to each other and know the game of

basketball. If we execute on the court we should be unstoppable.”

These first handfuls of games have not been up to the expectations of this season, but should defi-nitely improve with time and practice. Now that the boys are into basket-ball full time they should be able to pick things up.

“The first couple of games were like riding a rollercoaster,” Coach

Gamez said. “At times we played really well, and other times not well. We have things to build on and some things to improve. We are looking forward to this week’s practices and tournament games.”

The boys travel to Goliad this Thursday through Saturday for its tournament.

Badgers basketball team picks up key win against Pettus

By Allen CordawayFriday was a night the

Lady Badger Basketball team would like to forget. Skidmore-Tynan broke their 14-game winning streak, defeating the injury-plagued girls 30-39.

The Lady Badgers began district action Tuesday against Poth (results will be in next week’s paper) and travel to Schulenburg this Friday.

But for Coach Burke Braun and the Lady Badgers, injuries have been a top concern. Key senior players Courtney Pieprzyca and Lani Pitts suffered ACL injuries, and junior Kayla Ramirez is just returning after knee surgery.

The girls had been on fire prior to Friday.

1The girls won their own

Karnes City Tournament Nov. 29-Dec. 1, with senior point-guard Aileen Lunquist earning all-tour-ney MVP.

They swept away the com-petition, first blowing away Odem 60-27. Sophomore Morgan Kelley and senior Khadeshia Hopkins shared the scoring spotlight with 16 apiece. The defense held the Lady Owls to single dig-its.

They then faced Jourdanton and defeat-ed the Squaws 54-34.Lundquist had 13 points.

Lunquist’s 16 points pro-pelled them to a third win over Pleasanton 59-40.

Finally, the edged out Cole High School 51-46 in the championship game. Lundquist again led with 16 points.
