Dear Members, Have you ever asked yourself: How long can I se rve? Only one of us can serve a limited amount of people for a limited amount of time. Two of us can do more. Four of us can compound the effort s of the few and eight of us can divide and conquer with the spirit of individualism and the pride of seeing the opportunities of working within a group. Our group is known as the Association of Junior Leagues International. And we are part of this multi-cultural non-profit o rganization of Women! We make different choices in how we want to make a difference and our group dynamics have ensured that we follow some typ e of order, or
organizational process, to bring our ideas to fruit ion in our community. The Junior League of Youngstown has been serving our community for 85 years! This Anniversary celebrates our beginning as a League wh en the founders came together as a group for a common purpose: Serving the Youngstown area and the women and families who lived and worked here. The women were named Mrs. Robert Bentley, Jr., Mr s. Lloyd Booth, Mrs. Charles Bray, Mrs. John Ford, Mrs. Robert Marstellar (Mary Polloc k), Mrs. Walter Schaff, Mrs. A. Armstrong, Mrs. Bentley Thomas, Mrs. George Wick, M rs. Newell Castle Bolton (Mrs. Myron C. Wick, Jr.), Mrs. Wallace Thornton (Florence Harr ington). The Junior Service League Shop and Workroom for t he Blind was opened in 1930. In 1931, we were adopted by AJLI. We sponsored artwork at T he Butler in 1932. In 1933, The Children’s Theatre Committee was begun. In 1934, S cribblers was organized. Our impact in the beginning could be defined as o ur Members’ ability to establish and train a volunteer corps of women who decided they would c ollectively do something with their time. These beginnings led to more projects and mo re impacts. We have reached hundreds of thousands of women and children through our char itable and educational purposes. And to this purpose, we choose our time commitmen ts and we work-in our priorities. At times, our commitments compete with other time cons traints. With our willingness to invest time in one another and in the JLY Mission, we start to see the results of how we spend our time. Our members will embark on yet another journey as we add impact to our community. Please help our League with time well-spent at one of our volunteer opportunities and join us at one of our many functions, done-in-a-days, co mmunity collections or JLY business meetings. We hope to see you on May 20, 2014 at Antone’s Ba nquet Center for the Annual Dinner! Sincerely, Leah M. Wilson, The Junior League of Youngstown, Pr esident, 2013-2014
