The June 2012 Summer Issue

Transcript of The June 2012 Summer Issue
Summer is: A school’s-out state of
mind. Skirts instead of pants. Ants at
your picnic. Salt on your watermelon.
Sunstreaked hair, naturally. Playing
hooky from winter. Hot pink and hot
salsa. Cut-offs and fresh-cut limes.

Neon-bright sunlight.
Tents and ten-speeds.
Fifty shades of blue skies. Tubing
a meandering mountain creek. The
fewest clothes possible. Calling a
nap a siesta. Finding the sunglasses
you thought you lost. A personal
playlist that’s Popsicles for your ears.
Trashy books that baste your brain.
Showering off a day at the beach.
“Some of the best memories are made in flip flops.”

When it comes to your mortgage,
Being connected is a force of habit for the Stadtmuellers. The rapid pace of high-tech careers keep
Jo Ann and husband Mark on their toes…and on a lot of video calls, text messages and IMs with their
kids and each other! Mark works in the UC (unified communications) space for BT and Jo Ann works
for iCache Inc., creator of Geode, the world’s most advanced digital wallet. “Our tag line says it all, ‘Your
wallet, simple and secure.’ It stores credit cards, loyalty cards, gift cards and membership cards and
protects this information with biometric security.” And Jo Ann thinks the Geode is a long time coming,
especially for moms on the go with highly connected families like hers. “I love working on a product
that will change the way we interact with our money and credit, providing value, trust and security.”
And likewise, this family works with a company they trust just the same. “We have worked with Lucey
Mortgage through three transactions and through each one he has saved our family money by always
working to secure the best rates. He has our trust and we value him as our mortgage advisor.”
Trust Us. Jo Ann and Mark do.

FROM THE EDITOR
Our year is half gone and the midpoint is a high point: sweet reprieve from homework and hand
warmers. Our theme this month is simple, The Summer Issue, although you know as well as I that
summer is anything but. Big SPF, tiny shorts. Sleeping in hammocks and waking on the beach. From
110-degree sun into 62-degree movie theatres. You might be the beach bum, the roadtripper or the
grill master but it’s always better when we’re together—it’s impossible (and seasonally sacrilegious)
to experience a solitary summer. Whether it’s Sunday brunch or a Spoleto performance, summer
shenanigans are best enjoyed with a cohort and the Girls of Summer are the rst ones to tell us
so. Kelly couldn’t resist telling us about her fellow “turtle girls,” Jennifer expounded at length on her
surfer-girl inspiration, and Meg was emphatic about her helping hands in the literal eld. Gather your
girlfriends and start your adventures—because before you know it, the second half of the year will
be upon us.

FROM THE PUBLISHER
Nikki [email protected]
The Summer IssueI used to buy fresh owers at the grocery store every week until I started
feeling guilty about what seemed a luxurious self-indulgence. I would be
good, I told myself, and save rather than splurge on things I didn’t need.
So for almost a year, I mostly turned a blind eye to the purple irises, the
white hydrangeas, the big open-hearted sun owers. But then the peonies
arrived. Buckets of deep rose-colored ones rst. Yes, they were expensive,
but I had peony fever and I thought, “just this once.” And the next week,
bunches were waiting of the palest pink ones with a dash of alizarin red
in their centers. And I caved again. They don’t last long, these goddesses
of the garden, opening in one lush, languid burst of sensuality. But their
scent reminds me of my grandmother’s house in summer—the quiet rooms,
the polished furniture, the lingering smell of woodsmoke from the past
winter, starched white curtains breathing in and out on the sultry breeze
of a long gold-green afternoon. And peonies blooming in the yard. I would
have paid twice what I did for the inrushing of that precious sense memory
as I cupped their ower faces in my hands and inhaled.

Summer is hardly a good idea.
charleston.skirt.com junew2012 33
Stephanie Hunt is a Charleston, SC-based freelance writer and long-time contributor to skirt!, among other publications. She blogs (sporadically) at alifestill.com and literarycharleston.wordpress.com, and bikes (frequently) through the Lowcountry flatlands, a region she hopes to make more bike-friendly through work with the nonprofit Charleston Moves.
Spoiler Alert
I don’t recall what a movie cost that summer of 1975, probably no more than $3.50 or $3.75—a bargain for a life-changing event—but I do clear-ly remember standing in line in the welcome shade of the Morehead City cinema ticket booth and thinking, “This is not a good idea.”
I was only 12, and who knows what the parental advisory rating system was back then, but I did know this was dicey, and irresistible. Every kid everywhere had heard about the skinny dipping girl, the gory floating head. We all hummed the menacing “da dum, da dum…” chorus, even if we were “too young” to see the movie, which I probably was. But our family was nearing the end of a beach vacation with the Kearns and everyone was waterlogged and sun-crisped and weary from too much fam-ily togetherness. No doubt the adults saw a great opportunity to ditch the kids for a couple of hours and stir up some early afternoon G&Ts, and so off we went to the movies, to see Jaws.
Jaws was more than the first-ever summer blockbuster. It was a 124-minute initiation rite. I walked into the coolness of that cave-like movie theater entrance as one girl—a tennis-tanned, naive and undaunted adoles-cent, who loved nothing more than body-surfing in feisty waves, the more tumble the better. I came out as another person altogether—as prey. Prey with a crush on scruffy-bearded, smart-alecky Richard Dreyfuss, but prey nonetheless. I’m sure I did not venture back into the ocean for the remainder of that vacation, and I’m equally sure that every saltwater dip in the three and a half decades since then has been tempered with a slight hint of terror.
These memories come back to me as I sit on the beach and watch my own 12-year-old daughter catch waves on her surfboard. Claire rides one breaker in all the way to the shallows, hops off and pumps her fist to me in a “Hey, How About That!” salute. I wave a big thumbs-up in reply, and she turns to paddle back out to try again. Bethany Hamilton, the shark attack survivor and one-armed teenaged surfing wonder, is her idol, and the movie Soul Surfer her modern-day version of Jaws, although ten times scarier since it’s a true story. When I finally watched the DVD with Claire last summer (she’d already seen it a dozen times), she was startled to see me cry during the scenes when Helen Hunt (playing Bethany’s mom) sat by her mangled daughter’s hospital bedside. I couldn’t help it. Fear lurks close to the surface in maternal waters, and definitely in shark-infested ones.
I, for one, don’t buy the malarkey about the “carefree, lazy days of summer.” That was the ill-fated fantasy of the poor little boy on the yellow raft, kicking and splashing to Kingdom Come (literally, I’m afraid) in the opening scenes of Jaws. I hate to trip up anyone with a spoiler alert, but summer is hardly a kick-back, let-your-hair-down time; it’s high alert season, a three-month danger zone, which is why Steven Spielberg was brilliant to release his first sizzling blockbuster summer thriller in…summer. When the last school bell rings and kids and grown-ups flee the careful confines and sanity of blessed routine, all hell and hazard can break loose. We are not safe in the water (cue the John Williams “da dum, da dum” soundtrack), nor on the highway, in the campground, the swimming pool, certainly not safe at the mall for god’s sake, and definitely not at summer camp, where it’s a gruesome slow death by cheesy songs.
Not only do ravenous, vengeful Great Whites prowl, the heat index boils, fish hooks fly willy-nilly seeking out tetanus-prone targets, bees tunnel in tall grass awaiting barefoot kids and bored offspring turn wickedly feral. Lightning strikes, jellyfish sting, hot marshmallow skewers impale unwitting campfire sit-arounders, and that delicious chicken salad sitting in a nice sun-ny spot on the picnic table becomes a weapon of mass destruction. Summer is hardly a good idea. The iconic ingredients of June, July and August create recipes for disaster: baseball games? Beware foul balls that careen into the stands. Fireworks? Nothing fun about third-degree burns. Family vacation? A ridiculously dangerous oxymoron if ever there was one.
More than 35 years after watching Jaws for the first time and almost wetting my pants in sheer terror, my heart rate still races when I see a dor-sal fin peek-a-boo behind a wave. It’s a dolphin, of course, but there’s that hold-your-breath moment of “what is it?” and “what if?” A flashback to chum-stoked waters off the fictitious Amity Island. Summer, for those of us not in heat-stroked la-la land, is one wave after another of that sort of trepidation. I believe cute, scientific Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss’s character) was giving us all fair warning of summer’s numerous looming threats when he deadpanned, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.” I’m making sure mine has plenty of life jackets.

This Cynthia Rowley dress has become my unofficial summertime uniform.
Live to Play’s new junior Olympic pool opens at 6am for earlybird laps.
Mint sun tea from Sugar Bakeshop always hits the spot.
The patio at Rue de Jean feels like an afternoon in Paris.
The colors of Charleston feel like summertime: pastel walls and doors, vibrant flower-filled gardens, and fresh produce at the market provide endless inspiration.
June.It seems counterintuitive, but something about June turns me into a full-time hermit. Maybe it’s the gorgeous produce at the farmers’ market or my newfound desire to wake up with the sunrise, but this month I just want to stay in and be cozy. Cooking has never been more fun: tomato and basil tarts with homemade crusts, rhubarb crumbles that bubble over the edges. Even the simplest of salads can be so satisfying on a summer night. In June, I find myself appreciating small things I often ignore: the way the afternoon light hits a perfectly pink wall, the way the flowers droop over the windowbox just so. Charleston’s magic is in the details, and you have to truly slow down to notice.

Mimosas and tulips are essential for Sunday brunch.
Walls of jasmine provide the perfect porch backdrop.
Mason jars are my favorite type of makeshift vase.
Windowsills should always be filled with flowers.
Brunch on the Porch: June seems to be the only summer month with a pleasant level of heat. The humidity has yet to take over, so getting porch time in becomes a priority. Although there are endless brunch spots around town, potluck style brunches on the porch have become the only way for my friends and me. We end up with more mimosas, bacon, fruit, and french toast than we know what to do with and we can lounge on the porch for as long as we want afterwards (which sometimes means all day). It’s lazy and luxurious and wonderful—and that’s what Sundays are all about, right?

Summer Lightning
The best time to fall in love is in summer. All of nature conspires to restore us to a more sensual relationship with the world. The thrum of commerce, traffic, and familiar self-imposed routines suddenly seem stale and intrusive, while other pleasures beckon—plump mangos and fragrant honeydew melons in a farmer’s market, a young man playing a banjo on the street corner, the lush cool lawn in front of the library where a woman and her two girls are stretched out on a blanket reading their books. The body wants a beach, a creek, the shade of an oak tree, the stony path that leads to a lake. The heart wants to stay up all night, just the once, until summer stars fade into daybreak. Some summers are simply about falling in love with the earth again.
The day of Sarah’s backyard party was golden-warm, though the previous week had been overcast and gray. A light breeze spirited the scent of hyacinth and lilac throughout the hills, and I watched a few remaining wisps of fog over the bay dissolve as the afternoon wore on. I’d bought aged Gouda and decent wine to bring along that evening—Sarah’s roommates were going to grill most of the food—but I almost didn’t go. Made sleepy by the unexpected heat and the luxury of a June Saturday all to myself, I made the mistake of lying down for a nap; when I awoke, the thought of showering, dressing, and rushing off to a party that had already begun just seemed like too much work.
Still, my friend Sarah’s roommates had invited a large number of their friends, and Sarah really only had one or two of her own who would show. So I skipped the shower, threw on a light jacket over a t-shirt and jeans, dragged a brush through my hair, and reluctantly left the house, promising myself I wouldn’t stay long.
“Oh, good, I thought you weren’t going to make it!” Sarah hugged me, clearly pleased, and I was suddenly glad I’d come, even if guilt was the main motivator. She took my arm and steered me through a throng of people to the picnic table, laden with plates and side dishes. “I’ll have Ian make you a burger.”
She put a palm on the back of a tall man facing the grill, and when he turned, I was being introduced to one of the most handsome men I’d ever seen. Sarah had to ask me twice how I wanted my hamburger cooked. I was having trouble speaking, as if a chemical reaction had occurred and tak-en over my normal faculties.
“Ian’s one of the roommates,” Sarah told me when he’d turned back to his barbecuing duties and we’d walked a few feet over to the cooler to get some wine. “I told you about him, he’s here on a study grant. He leaves in a couple of months.”
“No, I’m sure you didn’t tell me about him,” I said quietly, trying to focus on something else—Sarah’s necklace, the music playing on the porch, or the other guests, a few of whom I recognized. But when Ian returned with my food, smiling at me, it was as if the rest of the party simply disappeared.
Later, when the moon came up, when everyone had finished the last bites of strawberry pie and most of the guests had left, when the breeze grew stronger, stirring the wind chimes on the porch into music and mak-ing the flames in the backyard lanterns dance merrily, the last of us drew closer in a circle of lawn chairs, not wanting the party to end just yet. Someone opened another bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and the conversation meandered, as if we were sitting around a campfire telling stories. Sarah went off to bed. Though Ian was across from me, we kept accidentally falling into each other’s eyes. It was hard to know where else to look.
I left with the other guests, only to return the next night. It was as if I had known him for a long time already, and would know him for a long time to come.
But Ian and I came close to never meeting at all. If I hadn’t made myself get out of bed to attend the backyard party, chances are good he would have left town without my ever knowing him, and the next sixteen years of my life would have been very different indeed. Yet our relationship continued, mysteriously, returning like seasons—as fleet-ing as summer, blooming, dying out, igniting again in unexpected times and places.
Fall in love in summer if you can, when love is most alive and fragile. I remember catching fireflies in jars on hot nights when I was a child in Maryland. I watched them wink on and off for a long time against the thick glass but I always let them go again, ashamed of trying to hold magic captive in anything so very ordinary.

Meg Moore | Harvesting HappinessSummer, to Meg, is usually just another planting season. But this time around, she’s growing something else:
a Sunday Brunch Farmer’s Market in Riverland Terrace. “I’m a Sunday girl and I’m a James Island girl. I wanted to find a way to stay ‘home’
and sell produce to the people in my community. The market will be seasonal, running to July and then October to December with plans
for a holiday market.” And Meg, of Dirthugger Farm, pays homage to the local spirit, beyond our hunger for local eats.
“More significant than harvesting my first tomato and packing my first CSA bag, it was the people in our community who appeared
seemingly out of nowhere to offer help whenever I needed it. I realize how fortunate I am to have found my passion for growing in a time
when local food is celebrated and sought after. ”

Jennifer Meadors | Making Teeny BikinisSummer stresses: swimsuits, sunburn and sand in your seat. Until now, that is.
Having lived in Hawaii, Jennifer brings Pacific fit to the mainland. “In 2008 I realized I hadn’t purchased a bikini in three years!
Between the seasonal trends and fit, I had been unable to find suits that looked good, fit well and held up.”
After consulting with surfer girls, Jennifer set out to craft the perfect suit through her company, Kini Kai Swimwear.
“Because bikinis expand when wet, they needed to be sleek and functional to stay put in rough water or hold up to beach volleyball.”
And thus their signature “cheeky” bottom was born, optimized to be “no fuss, no muss during a full day by the beach.”
Found online (kinikaiswimwear.com) and locally at Ocean Surf Shop on Folly, Jennifer’s designs have fans around the country.
“It completely makes my day when I receive an email or phone call from a happy customer who loves their new bikini.”

Kelly Thorvalson | Turtle RescueIn 2000, Kelly had a kiddie pool and a consulting veterinarian for the Sea Turtle Rescue Program at the South Carolina Aquarium.
Today she has 11 filtered tanks, a full-time vet and an on-site animal medical facility with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical capabilities.
It all began with a love of the beach—followed by a marine biology degree and being a part of the founding team at the Aquarium.
“We started rehabilitating sea turtles soon after the Aquarium’s opening and with each turtle that was admitted,
I became more intrigued by their resilience and sheer toughness. Sea turtles are ancient creatures having survived mass extinctions,
yet their populations are threatened with extinction because of humans.” When she’s not attending to the rescued reptiles,
Kelly’s often giving hospital tours and off-site checking out protected nests. Found an injured turtle or want to help?

Cyndi Briggs
Sweat poured down the back of my legs and into my faux Doc Marten boots. It was at least 95 degrees and stiflingly humid. My stiff blue jeans, fresh off the rack, stuck to my sweaty legs. I wiped the dripping moisture from my forehead, makeup smearing the back of my hand. The Sex Pistols blared, a cassette tape I’d picked out from the bargain bin at Wal-Mart.
“Aren’t you hot?” my cousin Lori asked, cool as a cucumber in shorts and a tank top. I shook my head, determined not to cave.
“What the heck is this music?” her boyfriend Bill asked, and I snorted at his lack of sophistication.
We sat on my grandma’s porch in central Illinois. I was 16 years old and had no idea what Johnny Rotten was screaming in those songs. I was dying to change clothes and wanted to wash the slimy foundation off my sweaty face. But this week, this summer vacation far away from my hometown in Virginia, was my one chance all year to feel superior instead of inadequate. Here, away from the social structure of my big, crowded public high school, I could reinvent myself into someone else, someone better.
Every summer of my childhood and adolescence, my family piled into our minivan and drove the 14 hours from Virginia to central Illinois. When I was a kid, our annual trek from the mountains to the prairie where my mom grew up proved exotic: The long, straight roads past fields of corn and soybeans hypno-tized me. As we drove by, the gap in the rows of corn would tick by like a metro-nome, marking the miles.
Danvers, population 800, had no stoplight but did boast a grocery store and pool hall where I learned to play Pac Man and ordered my first real cherry Coke. No one locked their doors at night, and we kids were allowed to play outside unsupervised after dark. My hometown felt so much more restrictive, fearful. We locked and chained our doors, locked our cars. Danvers felt like freedom to me. We spent most of the week running around the yard playing Ghost in the Grave-yard and camping out. It was kid bliss.
The summer before I started middle school was one in a series of sameness. Fifth grade behind me, sixth grade and a new school looming ahead. I spent the usual week in Illinois playing with my cousins, and we drove home in time for the start of school.
On the first day of middle school, it was clear everything had changed. It was as though a memo went out over the summer and I’d missed it. My long, tangled dark hair suddenly looked messy and immature. My mosquito-bitten legs heathen-like. Many of the girls had gotten perms over the summer, their
hair in soft waves, their bangs curled. These girls had abandoned jeans and t-shirts for cute skirts and flowery tops. They wore lip gloss and training bras. Self-conscious of my native self, I went home that day and asked my mom to take me shopping.
Throughout sixth grade I felt a step behind. I could not grasp the shifting sands of coolness. My perm came out awful and I developed acne. I swapped glasses for contacts but still hated the way I looked. I wondered why boys didn’t like me and then looked in the mirror and gave myself the answer. Self-loathing and angst became a daily battle. I never felt good enough. In the striving to feel okay, I lost my little-girl self.
The following summer in Illinois I was different. I was determined to prove myself cooler than my cousins, to redeem myself after nine months of relentless geekiness. In Danvers, they didn’t know about who I was at school, so insecure and out of step. I could re-invent myself, bolstering my own flagging self-esteem by looking down on the only people who knew less about East Coast social graces than I.
After a few days, though, Danvers began to work on me. By the end of the week I was back in my shorts and t-shirts, make-up gone. We watched Nightmare on Elm Street and I lay awake all night, terrified of my dreams. My cousins laughed kindly at my fear and my attempts to prove myself to them. We camped out and roasted marshmallows and told ghost stories. I cried when we drove away at the end of the week, knowing the prison that awaited my return. I scratched the mosquito bites on my legs and fought the anxiety rising in my chest as I thought about the first day of school. After my week’s liberation from insecurity, I knew the reprieve was temporary.
Throughout my adolescence, Illinois became my escape from normal life. Back home, middle and high school dragged out, years of anxious insecurity and waning self-esteem. In Illinois, after a couple of days of pretending and posturing, I could just be myself. No one expected anything of me. My family was simple in all the best ways. They loved and accepted me but didn’t make a big deal about it. My cousins snickered at my Southern accent just before making fun of their own Midwestern twang. Everyone was equal.
My grandparents died years ago, and my baby cousin Carrie, the youngest of us, lives in my grandparents’ house with her husband and two children. When I visit, less often now that I’m grown, I chuck the pretenses of my typical adult life. Now free of those adolescent insecurities, I still revel in the liberation that only comes when I’m surrounded by my down-to-earth family and the corn fields. I sit out at night watching the kids play around us, a new generation of cousins. I notice the fireflies, feel those mosquitoes bite my legs, and let my native soul re-emerge, one quiet summer moment at a time.
Here, I could reinvent myself...into someone else, someone better.

Bridget Smith lives with her husband in Juneau, Alaska. She is a fiction and non-fiction writer. Her writing credits include Death of an Alaskan Princess, a mystery novel (St. Martins Press); Color in Rain Country, a gardening book; Hunger and Dreams and Our Alaska, anthologies, and numerous public radio commentaries, essays and short articles.
She especially likes to write about moments of altered perception.
Bridget Smith
Every summer, our family sails north on the ferry to spend time in our little cabin on a stretch of beach in Haines near our home in Juneau. We haul water and use propane lights. Our cellphones don’t work very well. We while away the hours with friends and neighbors, watching wildlife and eating and playing games. In the evenings, we play board games and party games and card games. One of our favorite games when our kids were young was poker with Nowyta. A transplanted Texan who loved Alaska, Nowyta ran our summertime poker games with great enthusiasm. She would call together all of the
neighbors after a day of fishing or building or just staring at the view. With 70 years of experience behind her, she supervised the games with the toughness of a Texas Ranger. “I sure as heck didn’t come here to play Checkers,” she’d say when everyone checked instead of betting. It wasn’t any fun when players didn’t commit to playing. Who knew that poker could contain the blueprint for life? During the summers in Alaska, when the light stretched long into the night, so did the poker games we played with our neighbors.
According to Nowyta, only four games were fit to play: Draw, Stud, Lowball and, of course, Texas Hold ’Em. She was tolerant about playing games like Anaconda or No Sweat, but it was perfectly clear that they did not qualify as serious poker. When you played with Nowyta, nothing was wild but the dealer.
Now, I know that Nowyta had played in some mighty high stakes games with real gamblers and I’m sure she held her own and walked away not only with the shirt on her back, but probably those of everyone else at the table, but it wasn’t winning big pots that mattered to her. It was making sure that everyone got to play from the time they were very young. She told us that she herself had learned at her “Daddy’s knee.” Nowyta started the youngsters when they were old enough to hold a hand and fan out their cards. Usually the kids’ hand spans were big enough by the time they were 7 and if not, a willing adult stood by ready to assist. When my younger daughter was 14, there was no mystery in raises and
calls, and winning a pot was not that unusual for her. At 18, my older daughter was ready to run games of her own and play with her dad’s cutthroat poker bud-dies. She even cleaned up occasionally.
But the way we played summertime poker was never high stakes or no-limit. Instead, Nowyta taught us a way to keep everyone in the game—she called it Depression. She said it started during the Great Depression when very few people had money to spare. The rules are simple: Nobody can lose more than the buy-in. For us, the buy-in was $2. If the chips in front of you disappeared, you just kept playing. If you won a hand, you only got half the pot. Playing this way kept everybody in the game. For my money, playing Depression taught the most important lesson of all: You have to take care of your neighbors. If you share the wealth, everyone can keep playing. Isn’t that the point? As Nowyta would say, “Dang right.”
Sometimes, when I think of those long summer nights when the sun streamed in through the cabin windows and the hummingbirds fed continually from the red feeder, I thought about what my children learned, and for that matter, what I learned from Nowyta. It seems to me that poker is good train-ing for life. Isn’t the object of poker to make the best hand out of what you’re dealt?
One of the lessons Nowyta taught us was that you have to pay attention—you have to stay present if you are in the game. And you always have to commit to a game before you can play—by betting, not checking. Once you take the initiative by betting, you are bound to your course of action. Sometimes you even have to bluff to stay in the game. Then, with every move, you calculate the odds and take risks without being able to control the outcome. Sometimes you fold a winning hand, and sometimes you win with a nothing hand. Above all, though, it’s fun—fun to play with other people, fun to be with people of all ages, fun to see how each hand will play out, fun to win, even fun to lose.
Nowyta is gone now and we sometimes play poker in her memory—when the sun streams in through the cabin windows and the hummingbirds gather around the feeder. Nobody checks much because Nowyta taught us to commit to the game: “I sure didn’t come here to play Checkers!”

Men are paid more than women in 264 out of 265 major
occupations in the U.S., even those that are traditionally
held by women. Women are paid just 77 cents for every
dollar a man is paid—an average of over $10,000 in lost
wages every year. For the typical woman and her family,
ending the wage gap would buy four months of
groceries, five months of child care, and three months of
rent, with almost $3,000 left over. How did your
