• To be successful, coaching requires a knowledge of the information:
– an understanding of the process
– a use of a variety of skills and techniques that vary from Caregiver to Caregiver making it an individualized session.

What are the benefits?
• Caregivers change their lives to meet the needs of their child. This leaves little time for the caregiver to research answers on the internet, attend a support group meeting or try and locate someone who might have information. These searches can be daunting at best leading to anxiety for the caregiver.
7
Family Coaching• Are designed to assist individuals who need some additional
support.
• The facilitator is designated to provide feedback to a caregiver, assess the situation and provide additional strategies when the caregiver is faced with a difficult decision regarding services for their child’s school, behavioral health service or private provider.
• The facilitator does not make the decision for the caregiver but points out options to the caregiver allowing them to make an informed decision on their own. 8
Family Coaching
Family Coaching does not provide intensive behavioral support but can provide a guide on Basic Behavior, suggested reading materials and suggested websites for additional information.
Family Coaching can link a Caregiver to a provider to access behavioral services and provide Caregiver Stress Strategies when dealing with a difficult situation. The facilitator can be the voice and reason of calm when a behaviorists is providing a service to the child. 9

Family Coaching• When Family Coaching is provided by a facilitator, it can prove to give the
Caregiver a reprieve of feeling isolated and erase fears about wrong information concerning their child’s diagnosis.
• The facilitators are not counselors but resource personnel
• Provides direct services including tips on forming a good support system, providing current information and follow-up if additional questions from the Caregiver needs clarification of a topic.
• This service could be life changing for a Caregiver, reducing stress and empowering them.
13
Family Coaching• It is important to note that timing and control of the
information is necessary: when the information is given andthe amount of information provided, has to be determined at the time of the session.
• The facilitator will start each session by asking the Caregiver about current issues affecting the family. From there you can develop a session around the family’s need.
• Never drift off the topic!
14

7
Family Coaching• The facilitator should know the content of the guide or script
well enough that they do not have to follow word for word and actually present it as a reference point about the topic requested.
• Drifting off topic can be a hazard and create confusion, therefore, it is important to help the family stay focused on the topic being addressed. If the facilitator and the family determine there is another issue to be addressed then another appointment should be made.
19
What do scripted coaching guides look like• Universal design created by the agency:
– Accessing Resources, including linkage and referral
– Caregiver Stress Strategies and creating a MAP (Goal oriented action plan)
– Transitioning strategies
– Conflict Resolution and how to prepare for meetings
– Facilitating Positive Outcomes in Your IEP meeting
– Basic Behavioral Strategies– Training in basic human rights
20
This is what a scripted Family Coaching guide looks like
• Facilitating Positive Outcomes in your IEP• Start a dialog with the parent and use simple statements in your guide
• Have the parent review last year’s IEP and highlight areas that concern them, after that, encourage the parent to take it to school for the meeting
• Have the parent write a list of their child’s strength and weaknesses they have observed at home and how it is handled
• Have the parent prepare a list of their concerns or accommodation's they propose for the meeting
• Discuss any new evaluations or classroom notes and have the parent keep a binder with important items in alphabet or chronological order

Family Coaching Facilitating Positive Outcomes in the IEP
• As an example, in the Family Coaching Guide you have provided, quote Basic Procedural Law and review with the parent sections such as Section 504, IDEA 2004, FERPA and Least Restrictive Environment.
• In the Family Coaching Guide review the differences between Section 504 and an IEP
• The Family Coaching Guide should encourage the parent to review new and updated goals
• Finally, the Family Coaching guide should encourage the parent to ask any questions about services their child will receive
• Send the Family Coaching guide to the parent to allow the parent to follow along as coaching is provided
22
Scripted Family Coaching Guide on Parent Stress Strategies• Facilitator will send scripted guide to family:
• Guide will start with a dialogue of a dream the Caregiver has for themselves. The Caregiver will then provide and write 3 potential dreams which have been written out
• Scripted guide will list the Caregiver strengths and weaknesses
• Scripted guide will list Caregiver response to the question “If no changes take place what will happen”?
• Scripted guide will list three action steps for the caregivers to follow to start their dream process.
• The facilitator will follow up with the parent in two weeks with a short call to see how it is going
23
Scripted Family Coaching Guide on Universal Declaration of Human Rights• The facilitator will send scripted guide to family.
• The guide will start with a dialogue about Basic Human Rights and review with caregiver.
Suggestions of topic:
What is the law the caregiver needs to be familiar with?
• The Right Not To Be Discriminated against.
• We are all protected by the law• We all have the right to privacy and confidentiality
• We all have the right to nationality
• We all have the right to education and work 24

• Caregivers have time after each session to ask questions about the materials presented

28

How does Family Coaching Assist with caregiver stress?Caregiving is hard enough where isolation becomes unbearable, knowing someone is there to support you is priceless.
31
Who are the caregivers that Family Coaching can support?
• Parents
• Grandparents
• Siblings
• Extended family
• Court-designated guardian
• Foster Care Parents32
How Family Coaching sessions assist with social isolation
• I cannot commit to going to a workshop if I have no child care, transportation, working full time or you are physically unable to go.
• I have no family members or friends around to give me advice because they are unsure of what advice to provide or what help to give.
• Unlike a brick and mortar workshop, Family Coaching can be scheduled at different times during the day, evening or on weekends depending on the hours the agency keeps and since the contact is by phone the session can be scheduled at the best time for the facilitator and parent.

Family Coaching provides support in social isolating situations • Research shows that even modest interventions can make a world of
difference to a caregiver, http://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/04“Caregiving is Hard Enough”.
• Caregiver support leads to less stress and less depression when they know they have a contact person who understands their needs
• Online support can lead to anonymity and venting but it is limited in assisting a person with gaining skills or getting useful information
• Regular calls or texts helps a Caregiver to feel less invisible and forgotten.34
