Jovian Planet Basics- Far from Sun- Large- Low density- Many moons- Circled by rings- Rapid rotation- No solid surface
Jupiter
• The rings were not discovered until 1979, in a picture taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft, as it went by.
• Has planetary rings that are made up of dust from four moons including Thebe, Amalthea, Metis, and Adrastea.
The Three Main Segmentsof Jupiter’s Rings
• An inner torus of particles known as the halo• A slightly bright main ring.• Outer gossamer rings
Saturn
- Rings discovered in 1655, by Christiaan Huygens, using a relatively small telescope.
- Has 7 main rings making it the most extensive planetary ring system in the Solar System.
About the Rings• The seven rings of Saturn consist of thousands of
narrow ringlets. The ringlets are made up of billions of pieces of ice.
• These pieces range from ice particles that are the size of dust to chunks of ice that measure more than 10 feet (3 meters) in diameter.
Uranus
• Uranus has 13 prominent rings
• There are many other rings that are still being discovered
• The rings were discovered in 1977
Rings of Uranus
• The rings are composed of frozen chunks of ice and rock.
• The rings are extremely dark.• Scientists have to use special
cameras in order to take pictures of the rings.
sexy
Neptune
• Neptune rings were discovered in 1989 by Voyager 2.
• There are 5 primary rings.
Neptune’s Rings• Neptune has three major rings and a fainter fourth ring.• The rings appear to be made of dust particles.
• Neptune’s outer ring, the Adam ring, is unlike any other planetary ring in the solar system.
• The dust that it is made of is unevenly spread out.
Ring Similarities
• Neptune’s rings are made up of similar material as Uranus’ rings. • They also require a special camera to see them. • The structure of Neptune’s rings resembles that of Jupiter’s rings.
