    Malang

    |9 THE JOURNEY FEB 2015 |9 THE JOURNEY FEB 2015

  • Malang is the second largest city in East Java province, during the period of Dutch colonization it was a popular destination for European residents. The city is famous for its cool temperature and the surrounding country regions.

Tourism industry in Malang has grown rapidly over the years, especially in Batu area. Thanks to various kind of amusement park such as Jawa Timur Park, Batu Night Spectacular, Batu Secret Zoo & Museum Satwa, Eco Green Park and now the latest addition is the Museum Angkut & Movie Star Studio.

Opened on 9 March 2014, Museum Angkut is now a house for more than 300 vehicles. Yes, any kind of transportation you could imagine from traditional to modern, they even display Chrysler Windsor Deluxe which belonged to Indonesias former president, Soekarno.

A lot of the vehicles were brought directly from their home countries such as Germany, USA, Italy, UK, etc. Its the first and largest transportation museum in Indonesia (even in South East Asia).

Creatively the vehicles were arranged based on particular theme in each zone, such as Batavia zone and its old harbour (Sunda Kelapa) during the Dutch colonial era as well as the old Chinatown in Indonesia or the Gangsters & Broadway Zone that takes visitors to America in late 40s complete with mobster and bank robber diorama with the classic cars. And other interesting zones, such as the Europe Zone and Hollywood & Las Vegas Zone.

More vehicles will soon complement this museum including a Boeing 737 aircraft, trains and ships.

Visitor were greeted by the humongous the incredible Hulk figure as they enter the

    10 THE JOURNEY FEB 2015|

  • Hollywood zone which is the same area as Movie Star Studio. In this semi-outdoor area lets visitors can see and take pictures with some famous Hollywood movie characters and the rides in the movies as well. To name a few, Batman and Batmobile, the Flintstones and Freds wooden car, Scooby Doo and his gangs colourful van.

While not all figures looks exactly the same like the real movie stars but still, its a great spot to take some selfie. One reminder though, try to avoid weekends or public holiday if youre not too keen being in a crowded place. Youd have plenty of time to take good pictures without have to jostle with other visitors.

Before leaving the museum, spent some time in Pasar Apung area. There are plenty of stalls selling traditional food. Other than food, there are also souvenir, toy, clothes and trinket stalls. The prices are very reasonable considering its a touristy spot.

Try not to miss the sampan ride (traditional small boat) around Pasar Apung. Museum Angkut is another great place to visit if you happen to be around East Java during your visit in Indonesia enjoying the beautiful scenery around Batu area, Malang.

12 THE JOURNEY FEB 2015|12 THE JOURNEY FEB 2015|

  • Labuan Bajo is the capital city of West Manggarai regency and its located at the western most tip of Flores Island. The city serves as a gateway to explore the islands around Komodo National Park for snorkeling or diving and visit the giant dragons in Komodo and Rinca Island. It is also the main entrance to explore the extraordinary point on Flores Island and other attractive places on East Nusa Tenggara.

In recent years, Labuan Bajo gradually turned into a busy spot due the increasing number of Komodo National Park for visitors.

But Labuan Bajo itself had alot to offer, one such as the Puncak Waringin to view the fantastic scenery the main harbor of Labuan Bajo and the small islands surroundings. Not just that, unforgettable sunset view is totally worth the wait.

After enjoying the fantastic panoramic sunset from Puncak Waringin, we drove down to the town and stop by the end where the local culinary place located. It is located in Kampung Ujung nearby the new pier special for big cruises boat. Even though it is a local food court, but many foreign travelers spending and enjoying their dinner time here. For me, I had a perfect dinner by taking some local foods and grilled fish as the main menu.

Other interesting tourism sights around Labuan Bajo is the Gua Batu Cermin Cave, Batu Cermin cave is set within an impressive prominent rock formation near Labuan Bajo. Through a hole in the cave, rays of light find their way into the caves inside walls where they perform a spectacular show of reflected sunlight.

A waterfalls can also be find near Labuan Bajo, the Cunca Rami Waterfall. A 70-meter high waterfall with a beautiful natural scenery.

Small islands around Labuan Bajo also can be reach easily either by renting a boat

or joining a daily tour. The small island is a perfect place for sunbathing or snorkeling.

With numbers of exciting tourism sight around the town, Labuan Bajo not just serve as a gateway to Komodo island but also could become as an interesting town to explore.

Tarsisius Pente ; Born and raise in Flores, his interest in tourism he had taken him to most of tourism sights in Flores and other parts of Indonesia.

    text : Jonathan Wiguna

  • The art of silat was created and firstly developed in the islands of Java and Sumatra. It is an art for survival

and practiced throughout Indonesian archipelago. Centuries of tribal wars in Indonesian history had shaped silat as it was used by the ancient warriors of Indonesia. Silat was used to determine the rank and position in old Indonesian kingdoms.

In modern usage, pencak and silat are seen as being two aspects of the same practice. Pencak is the performance aspects of the martial art, while silat is the essence

of the fighting and self-defense. It is often said by practitioners that there can be no silat without pencak, on the other hand pencak without silat skills is purposeless.

Contacts with Indians and Chinese was further enriched silat. Silat reached areas beyond Indonesia mainly through diaspora of Indonesian people. People from various regions like Aceh, Minangkabau, Riau, Bugis, Makassar, Bali, Banjar, etc.

Silat was used by Indonesian freedom fighters during their struggle against

the Dutch colonists. Unfortunately after Indonesia achieving their independence, silat became less popular among Indonesian youth compare to foreign martial arts like Karate and Taekwondo. This probably because silat was not taught openly and only passed down among blood relatives, the other reason is the lack of media portrayal of the art.

Efforts have been made in recent years to introduce and reintroduce the beauty of silat to Indonesian youth and the world. Exhibitions and promotions by individuals as

well as state-sponsored groups helped the growing of silats popularity, particularly in Europe and United States. Indonesian 2009 Silat movie Merantau is one of Indonesian efforts to introduce silat to international scene.

  • If you need to escape the raunchy atmosphere of the infamous Kuta, or the glitzy upscale restaurants and fashion boutiques of Seminyak, or the well-manicured and posh Nusa Dua resorts, a hop over to Candidasa could offer tranquility to achieve an even higher level of calmness. A charming little town in East Bali that offers many amenities for tourists without being touristy.

  • During its heyday Candidasa saw a period of rapid tourism industry growth, marked by the construction of hotels and restaurants along the coastline. Its scenic lagoon served as a focal point of the development and a landmark for Candidasas fledgling industry. Unfortunately what was once an unspoiled blue lagoon has now turned into a big pond bordered by concrete and brick-and-mortar walls, an apparent victim of the haphazard development that damaged Candidasas environment forever.

Most of the beaches in the area are made up of wet, black sand due to the volcanic ash and arent the best place for sunbathing or swimming. But head five kilometers north east of Candidasa to get to the Pasir Putih (White Sand Beach), one of East Balis well-kept secrets beach. Beautiful white sand beach fringed with coconut palms and there are many beach front establishments selling ice cold beer and renting lounge chairs to soak up as much sun as possible.

The main road is dotted with small hotels, guest bungalows, and restaurants serving a wide array of culinary options. Some restaurant had a beach front seat, enjoy dinner with the fresh seafood and sweet your coconut while listening to the roar of the waves breaking the peaceful night in Candidasa.

Candidasa has a lot of charm and a lot to offer the traveler who isnt looking for massive resorts and all night clubs. With great restaurants, beautiful beaches, dive shops, and spas you are able to find a lot to do. Despite the past environmental damage, beauty still envelops Candidasa. As for one who seek more peaceful escape from the tourists-flocked parts of the island, Candidasa serve as a perfect save haven.

Papeda or bubur sagu, is sago congee, the staple food of native people in Maluku and Papua. It

is commonly found in eastern Indonesia, as the counterpart of central and western Indonesian cuisines that favour rice as their staple food.

Papeda is made from sago flour. The Papuan natives acquire the flour by felling the trunk of a sago tree, cutting it in half, and scraping the inner parts of the trunk. The trunk pulp is then mixed with water and squeezed to extract the starch-rich essence. The still moist sago flour is usually stored in

a container made of sago palm leaflets,

called tumang in which it will keep for several months before

spontaneous fermentation will turn it too acidic and unsuitable for making papeda. Depending on the variety and the growing conditions, it may take a sago tree five to fifteen years to accumulate enough starch in its trunk to make the effort of extracting it worthwhile.

Papeda is made by cooking sago flour with water and stirring until it coagulates. It has a glue-like consistency and texture. Papeda is usually eaten with yellow soup made from tuna or mubara fish spiced with turmeric and lime.

    Mesmerizing Indonesian Archipelago

Indonesia is a huge archipelago consisting of thousands of islands that stretch from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost point of Merauke. From

Miangas island the northmost to Rote island the southmost, it spread to more than 17.508 islands with over 1 million km2 making Indonesia a massive sand box to explore. This huge archipelago is endowed with a beauty of diverse cultures and nature with distinctive flora and fauna.

There are eight major islands or island groups in this enormous chain. The largest landmasses consist of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New

Guinea). The smaller islands fall into two main groups: the Molluccas to the northeast, and the lesser Sunda chain east of Bali. Bali is a unique island, which for a number of reasons can be put into a class of its own.

The favourable condition have attracted a great number of visitors to Indonesia. Visiting Indonesia means seeing and experienceing the unique diverse cultural and astonishing natural beauties that this couWntry has to offer and explore.
