Calling all very young archaeologists! Dig, delve and discover the fun side of history!The JORVIK Group is proud to announce our 2014 programme for Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), using our new early years area at DIG. With lots of fun resources including dressing up, puppets, storybooks and games, young learners are encouraged to discover history and archaeology in an engaging and enjoyable way.

Sessions are themed to help give an introduction to different characters from history or different environments that can be explored.

You can choose from seven themes:In the GardenLearn about the plants that grow in the garden - and the bugs that call the garden home! Go on a bug hunt and build your own bug!

Under the GroundFind out what it would be like to be an archaeologist - spend some time digging and see what you find! Learn about objects that are thousands of years old and get hands on with bones, rocks and maybe even treasures!

At the SeasideDiscover some of the creatures that live under the sea and the lost treasure it holds! Join in with songs and stories about underwater worlds and going to the beach!

Visiting VikingsThe Vikings are invading DIG and you get to meet them! Help them dig for lost Viking finds and search through a Viking loot bag. Are you brave enough to join them on their next adventure?

Meet the RomansMeet a Roman gladiator and get put through your paces in combat school! Hear stories from Ancient Rome and dig for Roman remains in our special DIG pit!

Pirates Ahoy!Here there be pirates… shiver your timbers and come to DIG for a morning of pirate mayhem. Sing shanties, make a treasure map and try not to walk the plank!

Kings, Queens and CastlesStep back into Medieval England and find out what life was like in a castle! Dig in our dig pits for some medieval treasures and learn how to dress up like royalty!

Fun to LearnOur EYFS sessions take place within DIG and make full use of all areas of the museum, including the garden, early years’ area and our specially recreated digging pits (with safe and cleanplay soil) where the children can handle genuine artefacts from 2000 years of York’s history.

Each session includes storytelling and a craft activity, as well as games and object handling, which are all themed around your chosen topic. The content and structure for the sessions has been designed in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, providing lots of opportunities for skills development through engagement and play.

Learning OutcomesEach session is designed to:

• aid communication and language development through expression in discovery tasks and joining in with speaking and listening in storytelling sessions

• develop co-ordination and movement through digging and creative tasks• improve knowledge relating to colour, number, materials and shapes through play and

stories• provide the opportunity to explore ideas about the physical world and cultural concepts

through thematic exploration of historic people, places and ideas • provide opportunities for self-expression and creativity through art, dress-up, music

and dance
