Only the naive could possi-bly believe that we can be knightson a white charger riding in toSaudi Arabia bringing universalbrotherhood. Perhaps theseactivists should ask themselveswho might replace the House ofSaad if it fell. We sought regimechange in the Arab world before andthe results are now playing out everynight on our television screens.

If David Ben Gurion, in theaftermath of the Holocaust, could negotiate an arms dealwith West Germany, surely astrategic alliance with an obvi-ous ally of the West, and despitelingering mutual suspicions, ofIsrael, merits our support,Indeed, unconfirmed reportssuggest Saudi Arabia may bebuying drones from Israel, evenif, for obvious reasons, thetransaction is taking place underthe radar and through SouthAfrica. There is also credible evi-dence that Israel and SaudiArabia have discussed Israel’suse of Saudi airspace in theevent it decides to launch anattack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The Harper government andnow the Trudeau Liberals wereright to allow the sale of lightarmoured LAVs to Saudi Arabia. If the Saudis weren’t able to buymilitary equipment from Canadathey would buy it from a more will-ing and reliable partner. Webelieve that the need for Canada toplay in full measure its role instopping the spread of Islamic ter-ror should far outweigh our dis-dain for the devious machinationsof the House of Saad. Those whosee a world of only sweetness andlight are almost childlike in theirfaith in human nature. MostCanadians, we hope, understandthat there is no security insurrender.

LAVs to Saudi ArabiaThe House of Saad shows no

repentance for beating its own citi-zens into submission. And genuinerepentance is, after all, the forerun-ner of forgiveness. The Saudiregime, linked since 1744 to theteachings of Mahammed ibn al-Wahhab, clamps down on thoseaccused of diluting the true mean-ing of Islam. It denies rights towomen. It tolerates no dissent. What’s perhaps even more disturbingis that the Saudis aggressively exporttheir brand of Islam, fundingmosques in countries which shouldbe beyond their reach. Nor can weforget that while there may have beenno direct evidence that the govern-ment as an institution or its seniorofficials played a role in 9/11 there islittle doubt that Riyadh turned ablind eye to Saudi donors and unreg-ulated charities who financed al-Qaeda’s operations. For years SaudiArabia has hidden behind aMachiavellian cloak of probity andgood faith.

But the Saudis have nowbecome dependable, and indispens-able, allies in the fight against ISIL,Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthi. And Saudi Arabia, together withIsrael, understands that only powerand might will curb Iran’s nuclearambitions. While most countrieswith the legal instruments to targetterrorist financing have stood idlyby, Saudi Arabia has obtained con-victions in 900 cases. The Saudigovernment has frozen over 31 mil-lion Euros owed by 2187 entities orindividuals, far exceeding the dismalresponse among other nationsmerely paying lip service to theirown laws. Expressing sympathy forISIL lands a person in jail. And toaddress the extremism being preachedin the country’s mosques the Ministryof Islamic Affairs has launched a“war of ideas” aimed at imams whoincite their worshippers.

No Room

At the Inn

Alexandra Katzmanand Jonathan Webberwanted to hold a non-reli-gious wedding ceremonyand paid a deposit toBernadine’s Stillman Innin Galena, Illinois. Theirwedding was to take placeon May 14, 2016.

But when the inter-faith couple visited the Innlate last year to finalizedetails for the wedding Innowner Dave Andersonadvised them that hewould only permit aChristian wedding at thehotel. When Mr. Webberand Ms. Katzman toldAnderson that she wasJewish and the familywould be uncomfortablewith such a service,Anderson told them thatthe wedding was “not agood fit” for the Inn.

The couple hadstayed at Bernadine’sStillman Inn the weekendthey became engaged anddecided that it would bethe perfect location fortheir ceremony. Theyfilled out the proper formand made it quite clearthat they wanted a “non-religious” wedding. TheInn’s website providedinstructions for securingthe services of a localjudge which would be noproblem since the motherof one of Ms. Katzman’sfriends was a judge. TheInn seemed satisfied asthe deposit cheque wascashed.

But the protest wasto no avail. It was either aChristian wedding withGod or religion or nothing. The deposit was returned

New London Mayor

Condemns Anti-Semitism

Blatant anti-Semitism has permeatedthe British Labour Party.Khadim Hussein, aBradford Labour council-lor, complains that theschool education system“only tells you about AnneFrank and the six millionZionists that were killedby Hitler”, while neglect-ing to mention the deathsof millions of Africans.Vicki Kirby, the vice chairof Labour’s Workingbranch, tweets that Jewshave “big noses” and“slaughter the oppressed”.Then there’s suspendedLabour MP Nas Shah whoapparently would like tosee all Jews deported fromIsrael to America. Andwho can forget the viewsof ex London mayor KenLivingstone whose readingof history tells him thatHitler was originally aZionist.

And so it’s arefreshing change whennewly elected Londonmayor Sadiq Khan endors-es a pledge co-signed by150 mayors from 30European countries andover 300 mayors from theUnited States to fight anti-Semitism. “I am proud,”said Khan, “to sign theMayors Against Anti-Semitism pledge and I willencourage other majorsacross the country andEurope to do thesame...Sadly, for manyLondoners, antisemitismis a very present problem. As a British Muslim, I amno stranger to discrimina-tion and prejudice”.

Khan has been out-spoken in his condemna-tion of members of his own

MRS. TRUMP

BLAMES

THE JEWSWIFE OF PRESUMPTIVE NOMINEE SAYS

CRITICAL ARTICLE “PROVOKED” ANTI-SEMITISM

By RAFAEL MEDOFF

Dr. rafael Medoff is founding director of the

David s. wyman institute for holocaust studies

and author of 16 books about Jewish history. -

Melania Trump, thewife of presumptiveRepublican presidentialnominee Donald Trump, says that a Jewish journal-ist "provoked" anti-Semiticharassment by writing anunflattering article abouther. In doing so, Mrs.Trump has joined a smallbut notorious group of pub-lic figures who, instead ofconfronting anti-Semitism,have preferred to blame thevictim.

Julia Ioffe's recentarticle about Melania, in GQ

Magazine, disclosed thatMrs. Trump has a half-brother whose existencetheir father has neveracknowledged. As a result,Ioffe received numerousthreats to her life from self-described Donald Trumpsupporters. Some of theharassing telephone callsincluded recordings ofspeeches by Adolf Hitler.Ioffe has filed a complaintwith the police.

In an interview withDu Jour Magazine, thewould-be First Lady wasasked about the anti-Semitic harassment of Ms.Ioffe. Melania replied: "Idon't control my fans, but Idon't agree with whatthey're doing…but there arepeople out there who maybewent too far. She provokedthem."

Donald Trump iswell known for his reluc-

tance to distance himselffrom his more extreme sup-porters, and for his tenden-cy to blame others for "pro-voking" unruly behavior byhis admirers. Some criticsmight say that Melania isfollowing in her husband'sfootsteps by depicting hermore vicious "fans" as theones who were unfairly"provoked" by Ms. Ioffe.

Mrs. Trump, howev-er, is not the first public fig-ure to blame Jewish behav-ior for the actions of anti-Semites.

One infamous out-burst along these linescame from British ForeignMinister Ernest Bevin in1945. Annoyed by the grow-ing pressure to admitHolocaust survivors toMandatory Palestine, Bevinwarned that if "the Jews"tried "to get too much to thehead of the queue, you havethe danger of another anti-Semitic reaction through itall." Zionist leader ChaimWeizmann memorablyresponded that just a fewmonths earlier, "the Jewshad the highest priority inthe queues which led to thecrematoria of Auschwitzand Treblinka."

The following sum-mer, another prominentEuropean public figureinvoked the blame-the-Jews theme. Afterpogromists murdered 46

Jews in the Polish town ofKielce in 1946, the highestchurch official in Poland,Cardinal August Hlond, declared that the attackerswere simply responding tothe (alleged) presence ofmany Jewish officials inthe country's newCommunist regime. TheseJews were "attempting toimpose forms of govern-ment completely rejectedby the great majority ofpeople," the cardinal insist-ed; therefore, the responsi-bility for the violence inKielce "is borne to a greatextent by Jews."

It is even more trou-bling that such sentimentshave been privately voicedby several presidents.

Consider, for exam-ple, the February 21, 1973telephone conversationbetween then-PresidentRichard Nixon and evange-list Billy Graham. (Thetranscript was released bythe Nixon PresidentialLibrary in 2009.) Nixon toldGraham that Jewish oppo-sition to Christian evange-lism would "stir up" anti-Semitism. "It happened inSpain, it happened inGermany, it’s happening--and now it’s going to hap-pen in America if thesepeople don’t start behav-ing," the president assert-ed. "It may be they have adeath wish," Nixon added."You know that’s been theproblem with our Jewishfriends for centuries." Even"a lot of reasonable peo-ple…are getting awfullysick of Jewish behavior”,he said.

Unfortunately, suchattitudes sometimes can befound on both sides of thepolitical aisle. In 1968, theU.S. government publisheda transcript of PresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt'sJanuary 17, 1943 meetingwith local officials inCasablanca. Discussingthe status of Jews in Allied-liberated North Africa, FDR

While doingresearch at the CentralZionist Archives inJerusalem several yearsago, I came across anotherRoosevelt statement in thisvein. The document con-tained the notes of RabbiStephen S. Wise, the mostprominent American Jewishleader of that era, from ameeting he had withPresident Roosevelt onJanuary 22, 1938. WhenWise referred to the mis-treatment of Jews inPoland, FDR respondedwith an anecdote allegingthat "the Jewish grain deal-er and the Jewish shoedealer and the Jewish shop-keeper" were dominatingthe Polish economy, andthat was what provokedlocal Christians to startsaying "the Jew should go."

In the cases of Nixonand Roosevelt, their privatesentiments about Jewishbehavior did not becomepublic knowledge untilmany years after they hadpassed away. In the case ofMelania Trump, however, she has unabashedly madeher views known; perhapswe should be thankful fortha

“To suggest that I amanti-Semitic is ridiculous. We have a lovely relation-ship with the Jewish com-munity in Toms River.Kelaher maintains he wasjust expressing how localresidents feel.

Appealing Blatant

Passover Punishment

Susan Abeles, anOrthodox Jew, worked forthe MetropolitanWashington AirportsAuthority for 26 years. Each year, prior to 2013,she requested and receivedtime off to observe thePassover holiday. In 2013she followed the same pro-cedure for Passover. Butwhen she returned to workher superiors accused herof failing to follow proper

protocol. They claimed shehad not given ample noticeof her impending absence. She was suspended with-out pay for five days. Sodistraught was Abeles thatshe retired “involuntarily”the same year.

In May of 2015Abeles filed a complaintagainst the AirportsAuthority claiming that ithad violated the ReligiousFreedom Restoration Actand the Civil Rights Act.The Authority counteredthat it is not strictly a gov-

ernment entity and that ittherefore falls outside theprovisions of the ReligiousFreedom Restoration Act.The federal district court ofVirginia, where the casewas heard, ruled againstAbeles.

Now Abeles has filedan appeal. Her suit asksthe court to order the air-ports authority to rescindthe “absence without leave”designation and remove anyreference to it from her per-sonnel file. It asks thatAbeles be reinstated to herposition if she so chooses. The suit further seeksfinancial compensation forlost income, lost pensionmoney due to early retire-ment and remuneration forpain and suffering.

The Becket Fund forReligious Liberty and theAmerican JewishCommittee each filed afriend of the court brief onher behalf. “It takes somechutzpah for the govern-ment to punish a Jewishwomen for celebratingPassover”, says EricRassbach, deputy generalcounsel at Becket. “Thatdidn’t work out so well forPharoah.”
