Introduction It has been almost 40 years since I first met Jerry and his family. Like all the collec-tors I wanted to see his fabulous Mechanical Music Machines. Being amongst the best collections in the world it was a must and every time I was in the area I visited Jerry and Virginia at their home in Arcadia, Los Angeles. It always was a pleasure to listen to his perfectly restored and maintained instru-ments and discuss his many projects. Jerry was a perfectionist and he had the best American restorers taking care of his babies. He loved music and spent a fortune on his music roll library. Thousands of music rolls and cardboard books still bring back to life the best classical music pieces and popular music from the 20th and 30th. When it came to part with one of his instrument Jerry was not easy to handle and I still feel very proud, that I was one of the few collectors, who achieved a major deal. When I traded with Jerry his Welte Titanic Philharmonic Organ for one of the best and biggest Hupfeld Helios Orchestrion – a dream came through for both of us. I am very thankful to have met Jerry and his family and now have the opportuni-ty to find a new home for one of America’s best collection.

JERRY (GERRIT) PAUL DORING STORY

Jerry Doring was born on April 28, 1918 in Richmond Hill, Queens County, a borough of New York City. He was the middle child born to Paul and Elizabeth Doring. Jerry was exposed to music from his be-ginning. His mother was an accomplished pianist, and his father had a beautiful tenor voice. Jerry’s dad might sing an aria from a famous opera, and Jerry’s mom would accom-pany on the piano. At the age

of two, Jerry moved with his parents and two siblings, Dorothy and Kenneth, to Los Angeles, California. Two years later they settled in Alhambra, a suburb of Los Angeles. As a young man, Jerry joined his school choir and, like his father, displayed a beautiful tenor voice. He performed in his high school’s musical plays and Shakespeare dramas. Throughout his life, he would often recite passages from As You Like It or Hamlet while sitting around the kitch-en table with his wife and four children. His beautiful operatic voice only got exercise at shower time, though, to the tunes from The Marriage of Figarro or Rigoletto.

After graduating from Alhambra High School, Jerry attended Whittier College where he majored in business administration and joined the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps). Not long after graduating from college in 1941, Jerry was drafted, but he was able to enter Officer Candidate School with the United States Army. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant, and served both stateside and overseas in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1945 after the end of World War II. In 1942, he met Virginia Hoff, a psychology major at Occidental College. They married in 1946. They had three children two years apart starting in 1947: Chris, Karen, and Wendy, and a fourth surprise four years later, Jeffrey.

Jerry always demonstrated acumen for mechanics. He first started restoring old ra-dios. When he was discharged from the Army, he joined his sister in owning a music store in Alhambra. They sold sheet music, records, record players, radios, pianos and televisions. Jerry soon exercised his mechanical skills with radio and record player repair while working in the store. The store eventually closed, and Jerry went to work with his dad selling insur-ance. After several years with his dad, he opened his own insurance company called The Jerry Doring Insurance Agency. He sold insurance until his retirement at the age of 62.

When his children were young, Jerry and his family often took summer trips around the USA. Jerry particularly liked visiting the old ghost towns like Virginia City, Nevada. It was in these places that Jerry showed an infatuation for antiques and of course the nickelodeons often seen in old Western town saloons. It was in the 1950s when he picked up a National nickelodeon and fully restored it at his home in Arcadia, California. With that purchase, he was soon hooked with a new passion and avocation. Jerry’s collection of mechanical music instruments began to grow. He had to convert and expand his garage space many times to house his growing hobby. He had to raise the roof to accommodate the taller instruments and provide a temperature controlled environment to help maintain the integrity of them.

Throughout the rest of his life, Jerry bought, sold, and traded mechanical music in-struments. He also amassed one of the largest roll collections known to mechanical mu-sic collectors. Jerry loved to display his acquisitions and frequently sponsored activities for the Music Box Society, Amica, or the Carousel Association. He corresponded with collectors from around the world, and loved to share and exchange information pertaining to his hobby.

Jerry was a perfectionist when it came to restoring his instruments. He often hired out the restoration, especially as he became older, but he was very precise about his expecta-tions. He carefully saw that all minute details were correct.

Jerry continued to enjoy and participate in his hobby up until almost his death at the age of 91 in 2009. His wife and children are now releasing the instruments for sale nine years after his death. They look forward to seeing another collector take ownership and appreci-ate and enjoy them as much as Jerry did.

Lösche Titania II

The Leipziger Orchestrionwerke was founded in 1902 by Paul Lösche and continued busi-ness till about 1930. Unlike their German competitors ,Welte, Hupfeld, Philipps and Weber, who sold their instruments worldwide, Paul Lösche concentrated mostly on the German and European market. Jerry’s Titania II is the prettiest in existence today. Illuminated reverse glass paintings and a rotating beautiful bronze statue give the orchestrion its high class and stylish look. 5 ranks of violin, cello, flute, clarinets and bass pipes together with piano, man-dolin, bass, snare drums and castanets let this instrument play: “wonderful and strong music replacing the best concert and dance orchestra”.

History: The instrument was for many years one of the highlights of the Mechanism Musik Museum in Copenhagen where Jerry bought the instrument from. The owner of the muse-um found it in a restaurant in Leipzig, where it miraculously survived the World War II. It was completely restored in America, back to its original glory.

Lösche Titania II

Coinola Midget Orchestrion Style K

Manufactured by the Operator’s Piano Company of Chicago, who was one of the lead-ing American builder in the field of mechanical musical instruments from about 1904 to the mid 1930’s. The Coinola Midget was introduced in 1917 and became a real best seller. The Style K had a rank of violin and flute pipes, which can play solo. Besides the piano with man-dolin there is a base and snare drum and cymbal. Behind the grillwork at the bottom of the case are two wooden shutters, that allow to regulate the volume of the sound to match the room in which it was situated. Coinola Midget Orchestrions are favorites of collectors today because of the variety of instruments sitting in a small cabinet.

Cremona Orchestral K

The Marquette Piano Company manufactured between 1905 and 1920 a variety of coin operated pianos, orchestrions and photoplayers under the “Cremona” trademark. Top of the line was the Cremona K with its beautiful beveled clear glass and Tiffany style art glass front, its arches with colorful lamps in the niches, and its pretty oak case. Fantastic sweet sound by three ranks of pipes for effects of violin, flute and piccolo with piano, mandolin, triangle, tambourine and castanets. As the Cremona advertising says: “Altogether a wonder-ful instrument full of remarkable musical results. Built especially for high class trade desiring a superior instrument”. “The latest improved automatic expression device; varies the tonal expression from very loud to very soft without impairing the perfect rendering of the music”

Built by Willhelm Bruder Söhne around 1922. The organ was acquired by Hathaway and Bowers and restored by Louis Suierveld. The organ plays special rolls due to a very spe-cial mixture of pipes. This organ is regarded as the best 52 key Bruder organ known and has a great selection of multi tunes music rolls.

Bruder Elite Orchestra Apollo Fairground Organ

The 65-key Bruder Elite Apollo Fairground Organ was originally imported by the Berni Organ Company, a New York importer of Gebrüder Bruder organs in 1912. It served on a Hershell-Spillman Beer Garden carousel at Coney Island, New York until it was sent to the BAB (Ervista Bona, Andrew Antoniazi and Dominic Brugnolotti) factory in Brooklyn, NY for a conversion to play the 66-key BAB music roll. The restoration included the addition of 22 bronze tuned bells around the Spillman logo. The full history of the organ was published in the COAA “Carousel Organ” June 2009. The organ attracted thousands of visitors at the Car-ousel Plaza of the Lake Amusement area at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. In 1981, Jerry Doring purchased the organ, which has been warehoused since from Jim Wells with a fan-tastic original Bruder statue. In 1984 the restoration for the Apollo Organ began by the late Louis Suierveld formerly of Norwalk, CA. It was decided to replace one of the double BAB roll frame so the organ could play Wurlitzer 165 music rolls as well as the BAB 66-key rolls, giving the organ an incredible range of classic and popular music. The final touch was given to the organ by renowned restorers Hayes McClaren in Fresno and Johnny Verbeeck in Belgium and was concluded in 2004. The outcome is an exceptional beautiful instrument of refined tone and quality. It is in fact two organ in one, since it is able to play the 165 Wurlitzer and the 66 BAB music rolls, giving the organ two different characters. A fantastic and rare piece of Organ History.

Mills Violano Virtuoso

The Mills Novelty Company out of Chicago is mostly remembered for the Violano Virtu-oso and the arcade and gaming machines. Born as the “Mills Automatic Virtuosa” in 1905 its inventor- Henry K. Sandell developed the idea further and in 1912 the Mills Violano Virtuoso started to become a big success. This is what the advertisement said: The world’s greatest musical attraction. No composition is too difficult for the Violano-Virtuoso. Classical, operatic, and popu-lar music are all equally well played. Every note is clear, full and true. The faults common to other automatic players are all successfully eliminated. It is without doubt the musical mas-terpiece of the day. The Violano-Virtuoso may be best defined as a violin with piano accom-paniment. The violin is played by a finger-like arrangement of electro magnets operated by a small motor. Where other companies in the mechanical music field used pneumatics, the Violano is operated with only electro magnets. Jerry’s Violano bears Serial # 1530 and really plays very nicely.

Philipps Violine

The Philipps Violine, Style PC 10 was the largest keyboard instrument the German com-pany produced out of Frankfurt am Main. Due to the cooperation with Rudolph Wurlitzer thousands of instruments were sold to America and up to now the few remaining once are highly appreciated by the American collectors. This specific instrument is unique because of its instrumentation. Piano with mandolin attachment, xylophone, bells, triangle, bass and snare drum, cymbal 2 ranks of violin pipes, flute and one rank of cello pipes in the back of the instrument.

North Tonawanda Pianolin

A group of employees of the Eugene DeKleist factory left the company and formed the North Tonawanda Musical Instrument Works. The most popular and best known North Tonawanda instrument is their Pianolin. As most of their keyboard less instruments this Pi-anolin uses an endless roll. The instrument consists of a 44-note piano with accompaniment of violin and flute pipes. This specific instrument has gold leaf carvings and the hardware is gold plated. Cute and very good sounding.

Peerless Arcadian Orchestrion

The Peerless Piano Player Co. owned by F. Engelhardt & Sons was operating out of St. Johnsville, N.Y. Their instruments are admired by collectors for the vividly patterned quarter oak cases and their fantastic Tiffany style art glass. Probably the most spectacular art glass of all American instruments is on Jerry’s Arcadia. (the very instrument is pictured in the En-cyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments- the bible for a collector- by Q. David Bowers page 558). Together with the Seeburg H this are the most beautiful cabinets ever built for an American nickelodeon. The instrument consists of piano, solo mandolin, 2 ranks of each 32 violin and flute pipes, bass and snare drums, cymbal and triangle and a set of castanets. This fantastic and rare instrument plays the special Peerless “O” roll.

Polyphon Style 100 “Savoyard”

A terra-cotta figure appears to play a Style 103 Polyphon music box with 77 musical notes, which uses a 15 ¾ “disc. When a coin is dropped in a slot in the form of an alms dish the music box starts to play and a crank connected to the figure’s arm gives it a circular mo-tion in the manner of an organ grinder. Reproduction of the Savoyard in terra-cotta and wood were made in the late 20th cen-tury, but this is one of the few all original specimen.

What Sypmphonion and Polyphon was for Europe, Regina was for America - a syn-onym for “music box”. Between 1894 and World War I the Regina Music Box Company out of Rahway, New Jersey sold more than 100’000 instruments. Few brought more happiness and enjoyment in the “good old days” to American homes than Regina Company with their music boxes. A huge variety of disc music boxes, for deep and small pockets, were produced and one of the top model was the Regina Corona line. With the invention of the disc changer the owner was capable to select from 12 top hits by putting a coin in the slot for restaurants or at will for homes. While on the Swiss cylinder music box you were stuck with 6-12 melodies on a pinned cylinder, the disc music box allowed you to always listen to the latest hit. – The jukebox of the beginning of the new century – Jerry’s Regina Changer is the Style 34 made for home use and is in like new condition.

Regina 15 ½ “Automatic Changer

In 1899 Regina introduced the 15 ½ “automatic disc changing music box. Regina of-fered them for commercial use with coin slot or with on-off lever for home use. There were many different case options but they all sold as Regina Corona, Style 35 or 36 with coin slot. The example in Jerry’s collection was the most expensive version – with the clock on top and the round art glass. Just beautiful to look and listen to.

Very nice Steinway B Piano in a Louis XV Art case. B stands for semi-concert grand or 7 feet long. The Model B is often referred to by pianists as “the perfect piano”. Work has been done on Action with new hammer. The Piano needs to be fully restored and preferably re-finished. All new parts are original Steinway parts. This instrument will be perfect to be used together with the Welte Vorsetzer (push-up) in this collection.

Hupfeld Universal Grand Deluxe

The Universal line was the basic line of Hupfeld orchestrions, which were available in many different case styles and interior specifications. The Grand Deluxe orchestrion has pia-no, mandolin and a 30-note metal xylophone.

The pride of the Doring collection with a great history. This fantastic instrument was advertised as to replace a 20 men orchestra and has violin, violoncello, flute, clarinet reed and large bass pipes in addition to piano, mandolin, orchestra bells and xylophone, bass drum, Chinese cymbal, snare drum and expression effects. This is the largest class I orches-trion in style 31 case, which is really a class II cabinet with the large bass pipes in addition. The beautiful moving scene, showing an Italian villa and simulating a huge fountain and day and night ambience plus the only style 31 cabinet in USA make this instrument to one of the most valuable instrument in the world. The Helios was completely restored by one of the great American restorers- Hays McClaren. (A style II/33 was sold by the author for over $ 1’500’000) Jerry traded this instrument with the author many years ago for the Titanic Welte Philharmonic organ. History: The Helios was built in 1918 as a special order by Mota- the Spanish distrib-utor for Hupfeld to a Spanish/Moroccan restaurant. During World War II the restaurant was turned into an officer’s club in which the Desert Fox General Erwin Rummel enjoyed some meals and musical entertainment by the Helios. Rommel got pushed out of Africa and Gen-eral Patton took over his seat and continued to enjoy the music. When it was auctioned off in Tunis, Fredy Künzle bought the instrument and the 3 of us finalized a trade at the annual convention of the Music Box Society International on the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

Welte Mignon Vorsetzer (Push-Up) M.Welte & Sons look back on well over 100 years of history. Founded by M. Welte in 1832 the company manufactured many types of mechanical musical instruments. From the first clock with pipes to the largest orchestrions and cinema organ. Welte orchestrions and the later Welte Mignon reproducing system received the highest acclaim from musicians, royalties and the general public. Welte Mignon, Duo-Art and Ampico – the so called big 3—dominated the American market and in Europe Welte was the undisputed leader for repro-ducing the play, virtuosity and expression of the most famous pianist of its time on a perfo-rated music roll. Rachmaninoff, Paderewski, Grieg, Rubinstein, they all played and recorded for Welte. For customers, who already had a piano or piano grand Welte built the so called Vorsetzer or Push-up. Push it up to the keyboard of any piano and it will play magically by itself. Wooden fingers and an ingeniously clever pneumatic system made the piano play by itself- controlled by the specially programmed Welte red roll. Weber Unika

The Weber Unika was one of Weber’s most popular orchestrion. Recommended for “Cafes, Restaurant and Grand Dance Halls”. The ingenious music arrangements of Gustav Bruder and the capability of playing the violin part as solo (not the same melody as the pia-no) make this orchestrion a must for every collector. Instrumentation: Piano with mandolin attachment and one rank of violin pipes. The instrument comes with an original roll cabinet holding 40 rolls.

Weber Otero

The Company of Gebrüder Weber was founded in 1880 and operating out of Waldkirch in the Black Forest. They built the most sophisticated mechanical music instruments in the world and with the incredible Gustav Bruder arranging the music for the Weber instruments their classic music is by far the best. While manufacturers in Europe and America concen-trated on the quantity of instruments, Weber’s main concern was the musical quality. The Otero was the fourth largest instrument Weber manufactured. None of the Weber Elite exists anymore and only 7 Maesto and less Solea are known today worldwide. The highest price paid for a Weber Maesto was over 1 Million $. Jerry’s Otero is an early one and has the orig-inal glass with a moving scene, depicting the bridge over the river Rhein at Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He bought it from Carl Frei, who found it in the Black Forest, moved and hidden away from World War II by the restaurant owner. The Otero consist of a Feurich piano of ex-cellent quality with mandolin attachment, a rank of violin and flute pipes, castanets and full percussion. The Otero is one of the most wanted instruments.

Imhof & Mukle Tribute

It all started with Daniel Imhof and his flute-playing clocks in 1848. In 1874 the Imhof & Mukle company was established in Vöhrenbach, Black Forest, Germany. Up to around 1900 all Imhof & Mukle instruments used pinned cylinders to play the music. Together with Welte, they manufactured the most beautiful and huge barrel orchestrions with of course limited melodies pinned on a barrel. Imhof & Mukle developed their own “Music Leaf System”, which consisted of a long roll made of tough manila paper wound on a wooden spool, allowing to play music up to 30 minutes without changing the rolls. The “Tribute” was found in a restau-rant in Belgium and completely restored by Mike Argain and consist of piano, mandolin, violin and cornet pipes, xylophone, orchestra bells, cymbal, bass and snare drum. It also has a tall matching roll cabinet holding 32 long playing Imhof rolls and a smaller one with 16 rolls. The back painted glass with light effects make this instrument a stunning piece in the collection.

Reymond Duwyn was an employee of the famous Th. Mortier factory, who built the most famous dance organs and café orchestrions in Antwerp, Belgium. He left the compa-ny and started his own business in Wilrijk, Belgium. In comparison with Mortier, Bursens or Decap his output was very small and mostly limited to clients in the region. The organs had a particularly sweet and mellow “warm” type of sound and due to the limited numbers pro-duced a very high-quality finish to the pipework. We do not know, how the organ made its way to America, but unfortunately the orig-inal front got lost in transit. Jerry bought it many years ago from the Dutch Village in Win-chester, CA and ordered from the Dreamfactory in Switzerland one of the 3 baby Taj Mahal reproduction front, originally designed by Th. Mortier in the mid-20th. Made of grinded mar-ble this Duwyn/Mortier Café Orchestrion will be one of the nicest instrument in the world. A combination of beauty and musical ingenuity. The restoration has been commissioned by the Doring family to NBC (Netherland Bookorgan Company) in Tilburg, Holland and will be finished in due time for the new owner. It will be MIDI controlled and play unlimited melo-dies chosen on a computer touch screen. Truly on of the highlights of the collection.

Wurlitzer Style 153 Duplex Military Band Organ

For Three-Abreast Carousels and Open-Air Dance Pavilions – this is what the advertise-ment said, and Jerry’s Military Band Organ is truly one of the best. Restored by Dana Johnson, Louis Suieveld and the case by John Maxwell. As the title says the organ is equipped with a duplex long roll mechanism, which allows to play music without interruption. With over 160 pipes, full percussion, 16 bell bars and swell shutters for volume control it is really a little gem.

The Style B, BX, C, CX were probably the most popular orchestrions built by the Wur-litzer company. They were manufactured in many different cabinet styles and some had the “wonder light” added on top. Since this was a fascinating addition for the public it is also called “fascinator”- the very first disco light. The X stands for the automatic roll changer, which this instrument does not have. Jerry’s Style C has a high-grade piano with mandolin attachment, two ranks of pipes – Violin and Flute, orchestra bells and full percussion and plays a 10-tune roll.

Julius Bartholomeus Vander Beken was born in 1868. He received the training in build-ing mechanical organs at the works of Louis Francois Hooghuys. In 1909 the family left Ger-aardsbergen and lived in Enghien, where he started his own organ business. Only a very limited number of high standard organs were built and Julius died in Enghien in 1948 at the age of 80. The organ is completely restored by the late Belgium organ restorer - Johnny Ver-beeck. The organ front was made new, in the Coney Island style, out of original Bruder and Mortier carvings. A fantastic cardboard operated carousel organ – the only one in America.

Nicole Frères Overture Music Box

The music box was probably invented by Antoine Favre, Geneva, for pocket watches and snuff boxes. Ac-cording to Arthur Ord-Hume it was David Lecoultre of Brassus, Switzerland who invented the cylinder in the most familiar sense. In any case it was the Swiss, who dominated the world market for cylinder music boxes till around 1900, when the disc music box took over. You now were no longer restricted to the pinned music on a cylinder and you could buy the latest hit and play it on your machine. The Rolls Royce of music boxes were manufactured by Nicole Frères, Geneva and by far the best music was arranged and reproduced by an Over-ture Music Box. Mostly with only four melodies but with a very narrow comb, giving a much larger scale for the arranger and with the fat cylinder a much longer play time. This is a very fine example, with beautiful marque-try to the case and a nice selection of Mozart, Handel and Haydn melodies.

Bontems Bird Cage

Blaise Bontems (1814 - 1881) was the first inventor who achieved to really reproduce mechanically the singing of birds. Born in Ménil, France he moved his business around 1850 to Paris and in 1854 to the Rue de Clery, 72 in Paris. His birdcages were not ment to be toys or novelties- no they were a piece of art for the rich and famous of the second half of the 19th century. This specific bird cage was manufactured for a public place and therefore has a coin mechanism to activate the “singing”. With 3 singing birds this is a very rare piece and still in perfect condition. Probably manufactured by his son – Charles Bontems.

Mira Disc Music Box

Mermod Frères was founded in 1816 and was one of the leading manufacturer of cyl-inder music boxes in Switzerland. Where other companies failed to adjust to the invention of disc music boxes- Mermod Frères did not and introduced in the last decade of the 19th century the Stella music box, which used discs without the projections (patented by An-dré Junod from St. Croix) instead of the stamped teeth all other manufacturer in Germany used. Although Mira and Stella music boxes were manufactured in large quantities, only few survived in comparison with the big 3; Polyphon, Symphonion, Regina. The Mira in Jerry’s collection plays 18 ½ “discs. In America the Mermod products were sold by Jacot Music Box Co. out of New York as “Empress” and advertised as:” Unequaled for Sweetness, Harmony and Volume of Tone”. Basically, true and therefore considered by collectors today as the finest types of music boxes ever made.

The Musical Clowns

Built by Paul Zwahlen of Yverdon, Switzerland in the 60th. Zwahlen was a famous Swiss automaton builder for commercial use. He built the automatons for window displays and restaurants till around 1980. His customers were “Toblerone”, Caran d’Ache, Cheese factories, etc. The 4 clowns, playing clarinet, saxophone, accordion and bass drum, were only built 3 times for Circuses. Retonio sold them to Jerry around 20 years ago. Built for eternity they move and simulate to play music (on an 8-track tape player) once you feed them with a coin.

A look into the music roll collection Jerry was always on the search for additions to his music roll collection. He left no op-portunity to acquire as many rolls for his instruments as possible and spent a fortune doing so. I believe, that his collection has over all one of the best selection of classical and popular music in the world. Over 1000 rolls in total.

Gebrüder Bruder & Wilhelm Bruder Söhne The world most famous fairground organ building town was Waldkirch, located in the “Black Forest” in Germany. All major organ firms, such as Gavioli, Limonaire, Ruth had their branches in Waldkirch, but the leading maker was the Bruder family. They all originated from Ignaz Bruder ( 1780-1845) and manufactured under Ignaz Bruder and Sons, Gebrüder Brud-er and Willhelm Bruder Söhne. From the late 19 century till the 1930’s Willhelm built a variety of organs. From hand-cranked organ to the large and ornate fairground organs operated by cardboard music books and later music rolls. Many organs were sold to America and con-verted to play different rolls and sold under Barni, Parker or Wurlitzer. The Doring Collection houses two fantastic examples of the later “Bruder Area”

Ludwig Hupfeld AG The Ludwig Hupfeld AG was the largest manufacturer of mechanical musical instru-ments in the world. It all started in 1892 when Ludwig Hupfeld took over J.M. Grob & Co and formed the Ludwig Hu pfeld AG in 1904 to build the new factories in Böhlitz-Ehrenberg for around two million gold marks. The company employed thousands in a factory building of 100’000 square meters just outside of Leipzig. Examples of most major Hupfeld instruments survive in collections today. The most wanted Hupfeld instruments today are the Hupfeld Phonoliszt with the 3 violins, the Super Pan and the Helios line. Of these instruments may be a few over hundred survived worldwide. Hupfeld Pianos were manufactured till 2009, when the company declared Chapter 11.

Rudolph Wurlitzer Rudolph Wurlitzer was a German immigrant and started to do business in 1856 with his capital of $ 700, buying and selling musical instruments in Cincinnati. In 1890 the Ru-dolph Wurlitzer Company was incorporated and eventually moved to North Tonawanda, N.Y. ¬ - an incredible success story began. Starting with small barrel organs and self-playing pianos Wurlitzer soon became the leading orchestrion builder in the United States. This in big part was thanks to a cooperation with Philipps – one of Germany’s leading manufactur-er of orchestrions. Two sons of Rudolph Wurlitzer visited in 1902 the annual Leipzig Trade Fare, which resulted in importing over 1000 Philipps Pianella instruments until about 1914. Around this time Wurlitzer decided to manufacture their own orchestrion line and started to fit Philipp parts into their own designed cabinets. From Barrel to Band-Organs, from Pi-anellas to huge Mandolin PianOrchestras, from Theatre Photoplayers to the largest Cinema Organs and finally to the most famous Juke Box manufacturer in the world. The Doring Col-lection houses two very nice Wurlitzer and one Philipps instruments.
