Economic Security Initiative

The Economic Security Initiative Committee participated in the Senior Citizens Holiday Luncheon. We were able to set up a resource table, which included information per-taining to legal assistance and senior transportation ser-vices. The information was well received by the senior citizens. “Thank you” for joining the December “Third Thursday” Wealth-Building Webinar. We hope that you walked away with tips to help you capitalize your assets in the new year. Please join us this month during the MLK service week-end, as we participate in a business clothing drive and career transition workshop for female veterans.

Emerging Young Leaders Our Emerging Young Leaders did a fantastic job Novem-ber 23rd during Project Giveback. The number of food boxes they helped assemble for the needy was increased from 1,000 to 1,500 this year. Many of them worked from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM. The girls really helped to make a difference!

For our December 21st meeting, our Emerging Young Leaders participated in the Alexandria Child Holiday Shar-ing project. Our girls reached out to the neediest in our community in these hard times by sorting toys at the distri-bution center.

Sorors, as we begin our new year, let’s reflect on the many blessings from 2013. This is the time to unfurl new gifts and to unveil new opportunities as the new year welcomes you. Global Poverty and Social Justice will have an opportunity to share, once again, in a moment of joy and pleasure with those who are homeless facing the start of another year. We will join forces to feed the homeless as part of our bi-monthly meal service at the Carpenter’s Shelter located at 930 N. Henry Street, Alexandria, VA in 2014. The next meal service

program is scheduled for Sunday, January 19, 2014. Lunch will be served from 12:00-1:00 PM. Global Poverty will take the lead for this meal service. If you are interested in volunteering on January 19th, please contact Soror Saundra McCullough-Cobey at [email protected]. Please wear comfortable clothing. Sorority paraphernalia is encouraged. As a reminder, the goals for the Global Poverty Initiative are to end hunger, preserve the environment and empower women. The program will provide food production skills and training in self-reliance through gifts of seeds, livestock and training in environmentally sound agriculture. Education in sustainable food practices will make women equal partners in ending poverty and hunger. Please consider volunteering to work on the Global Poverty Committee for 2014. It is rewarding, as well as a humbling experience. We would love to have you on the team. Thank you sorors, for your continued support. Happy New Year to you and yours!

Make sure your check is signed. Checks without signa-tures will be returned, resulting in a delay in processing your payment. Do not send payments via certified mail, or any delivery requiring a signature. Certified or registered mail may be returned, resulting in further delays in processing pay-ments. If your name and address is not printed on your check, please write your name and address and specify in the ‘memo’ section the purpose of the payment. This will as-sist us in identifying the source of payment, avoiding po-tential delays in processing your payment. If your name has changed, is hyphenated, etc., make sure your check reflects the current name in our records (you can still use your old checks, but put your current name in the ‘memo’ section). Visit the Corporate website and enter the ‘Members Only’ section to update your contact information. This will assist us in identifying you if names don’t match when we are conducting mass payment. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority operates on a calendar year basis. Membership cards are valid from January 1 through December 31. All dues and assessments are due and payable January 1 of each year and are subject to a late fee of $20 if re-ceived after February 1 – Bylaws, Article VII, Section 1-19. If you paid your dues after the December 9th postmark deadline, please be mindful that you will not be listed on the January Chapter member roster. Feel free to contact me ([email protected]) if you have any questions about these or any other Sorority‐related financial matters.

Ivy Foundation of Northern Virginia

The 55th Annual Cooley Moore Scholarship Luncheon Fashion (LFS) “Polished Chic: Style, Grace, and Elegance”

The 55th Annual Luncheon Fashion Show committee extends our sincere appreciation to Zeta Chi Omega Chapter for your outstanding support for a successful event. Our goal was to raise $16,000 scholarship funding to assist students in offsetting the growing cost of attending colleges/universities. Your commitment, dedication, time and persistence helped us over achieve that goal by raising $21,490. We sincerely thank you for your sup-port. A quote from one of the scholarship recipients: “I would like to thank you for the generous scholarship that you have awarded me through the Ivy Foundation of Northern Virginia (IFNV). I was extremely thrilled and honored to learn that I was selected as the recipient for the Cooley Moore Scholarship. The University of Mary Washington would not have been possible for me had it not been for your generosity. I hope that I can make the most of my time here and contribute back to the community just as much as the foundation has.” Sorors, this is the difference you make! "Individually, we are one drop, together, we are an ocean." Again, thank you for being a part of the LFS Ocean! Please mark your calendars for the 56th Annual Cooley Moore Scholarship Luncheon Fashion Show (LFS) to be held on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at the McLean Hilton, Tysons Corner, VA.
