Message from the President

April has proven to be another exhausting month. In March, Treasurer Tom Mayne fell ill and is still recovering. This month, VP Joe Abitante suffered a heart attack. He had successful heart surgery and is on the road to recovery. My wife, Connie, and I were unable to attend April’s General meeting because we were with her brother who suffered a major heart attack. We are happy to announce he is recovering, as well. On behalf of Joe, Tom, Connie and myself many thanks to all the members whose outpouring of support and prayers helped us (and continues to help) get through these trying times.

Please remember to read your entire newsletter for information on upcoming events, including our officer elections in May. Thank you to all the candidates who came forward to run for the IASC Board of Directors. I have faith that our new board will continue to keep our club moving in the right direction.

I can’t forget to thank our super Social committee and all the volunteers that helped make the April Showers dinner dance such a success. These folks continue to outdo themselves at every event. May’s dinner dance, Una Bella Serata, will be another joint effort between our Heritage committee and Social committee. This spectacular event is always a sell-out so please be patient with our staff as they maneuver the dance floor to serve everyone. And don’t forget the dress code is formal attire.

In closing, I would like to thank my board for stepping up during my one week absence. Our members are so lucky that our Board of Directors (and every board that has served this club) can handle anything thrown at them. This board, in particular, has had a lot thrown at us! We just smile, keep the faith and keep going and going and going….

Respectfully submitted-

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

Due to Board of Health Regulations, homemade baked items (cakes, breads,

etc.) are not allowed at the Italian American Social Club on Tuesday and

Friday nights. Cakes purchased at a bakery (Publix, Winn Dixie, etc.) are allowed. Cakes are never allowed to be brought in to any Sponsored Event.

LA COLTURA ITALIANA La Coltura Italiana, the Italian culture, the word culture has many meanings for many disciplines, for instances; we have material culture and non-material culture. Material culture refers to things such as the ways of farming and of fishing, the food people cook and eat, the lay of roads, the styles of buildings, artifacts, styles of clothing, musical styles, and instruments, and medicines that people use in their survival techniques. The non-material culture refers to ideas and values; ideas of the origin of life, and of the wonderment of the world around us. Values refer to those things we treasure; forms of property, a belief in a God, legends, truths, literature, etiquette, and conventions.

Consequently, culture refers to many things, past and present. La Coltura Italiana is one of the richest existing cultures in the world. It provides observers with a wealth of knowledge of governmental experiments, legal expertise, philosophy, agricultural techniques, military tactics, engineering, religion, language, architecture, la cucina italiana, music, medicine, and science. It is as mentioned one of the richest cultural heritages for the Western World. In regards to language, sixty-five per cent of the English vocabulary is of Latin origin, however, philologists do not considered it a Latin language because of its syntax, and I might add, its pronunciation. Nevertheless, in the second sentence of this paragraph, as an example, there are only four words not of Latin origin, it, with, wealth and of. Out of 220 words up to this point 100 are of Latin origin. Latin languages are Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Rumanian. There are other languages also, but not of a national political nature as these. Some others are Ladino, Ladin, Friulan, Sicilian, Rhaeto-Romantic, all in Italy, Catalan in Spain, and Provence in France. There are many more spread throughout what was once known as the Roman Empire. Some are still written languages as the ones mentioned and others just spoken. Language by the way is the major vehicle for the transmitting of things cultural. Art is another way and quite often artists express the values of the people through such things as writings, music, paintings, architecture, tools, and artifacts.

In the Western World as well as others, major stages or periods of art and philosophy are identified; classical, medieval, renaissance (rebirth), baroque, neo-classical and modern. In visual art all of these exist in the city of Rome in one material form or another. A visit to Rome gives one the opportunity to see representations of all the mentioned ages of western civilization.

Many of our local children get their only meals from the Free Lunch (and Breakfast) programs in our schools. Once

they go home on the weekend, they go without. The Kiwanis K-Kids of Belle Terre Elementary began a program

(Children Hungry on Weekends – Not on my Watch!)

The K-Kids collect Individual Serving size non-perishable food and drinks which are discreetly packed into
