Samuel "Sam" Sharpe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Sharpe
Samuel "Sam" Sharpe, or Sharp, National Hero of Jamaica
(1801 – 23 May 1832),[1]
was the slave leader behind the
widespread Jamaican Baptist War slave rebellion of 1832
(also known as the Christmas Rebellion).
Samuel Sharpe aka "Archer" was born into slavery in the
parish of St James, Jamaica in 1805 on the Plantation of
Samuel and Jane Sharpe. The Slave Return of 1832
announcing his death, gave his name as Archer aka Samuel
Sharpe the son of Eve and was only 27 years old when he
died. The Slave Return of Samuel and Jane Sharpe 1817
showed a young 12 year old Archer on the plantation with his
mother Eve and siblings Joe (2 years old) and Eliza (20 years
old). When or why Archer changed his name to Samuel
Sharpe is unknown. He was allowed to become well-educated.
Because of his education, he was respected by other slaves.
Sharpe became a well-known preacher and leader in the
Baptist Church, which had long welcomed slaves as members
and recognized them as preachers. He was a deacon at the
Burchell Baptist Church in Montego Bay, whose pastor was
Rev. Thomas Burchell, a missionary from England. Sharpe
spent most of his time travelling to different parishes in
Jamaica, educating the slaves about Christianity, which he
believed promised freedom.
Baptist War
Slaves learned that the British
Parliament was discussing abolition of
slavery; those who could read followed
such news closely. In the mistaken belief
that emancipation had already been
granted by the British Parliament, Sharpe
organised a peaceful general strike
across many estates in western Jamaica to
protest working conditions. As this was
the harvest of the sugar cane, it was a
critical time for the plantation owners:
generally the workforce had to work
overtime to process the cane quickly at
its peak. The Christmas Rebellion
(Baptist War) began on 27 December 1831
at the Kensington Estate. Reprisals by
the plantation owners led to the rebels'
burning the crops.
Sharpe's originally peaceful protest turned into Jamaica's
largest slave rebellion. The colonial government used the
armed Jamaican military forces to put down the rebellion,
suppressing it within two weeks. Some 14 whites were killed
by armed slave battalions, but more than 200 slaves were
killed by troops. Afterward more reprisals followed. The
government tried, convicted, and hanged many of the
ringleaders, including Sharpe, in 1832. A total of 310 to 340
slaves were executed through the judicial process, including
many for minor offenses such as theft of livestock.
Just before Sharpe was executed for his role in the rebellion,
he said in his last words: "I would rather die among yonder
gallows, than live in slavery."[2]
The rebellion and government
response provoked two detailed Parliamentary Inquiries. The
Jamaican government's severe reprisals in the aftermath of the
rebellion are believed to have contributed to passage by
Parliament of the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act and final
abolition of slavery across the British Empire in 1838.
Legacy
In 1975, the government of independent Jamaica
proclaimed Sharpe a National Hero, with the
posthumous title of Rt. Excellent Samuel Sharpe.
Also in 1975, Sam Sharpe Teachers' College was
founded and named in his honor in Granville, a
suburb of Montego Bay.
Sharpe's image is used on the modern Jamaican $50
bill.

Robert Smalls (April 5, 1839 –
February 23, 1915) was an enslaved
African American who, during and after
the American Civil War, gained freedom
and became a ship's pilot, sea captain,
and politician. He freed himself, his crew
and their families from slavery on May
13, 1862, by commandeering a Confederate transport ship,
CSS Planter, in Charleston harbor, and sailing it from
Confederate-controlled waters to the U.S. blockade. His
example and persuasion helped convince President Lincoln to
accept African-American soldiers into the U.S. Army and the
U.S. Navy.
Smalls was born in Beaufort, South Carolina. After the
American Civil War, he returned there and became a
politician, winning election as a Republican to the South
Carolina State legislature and the United States House of
Representatives during the Reconstruction era. As a politician,
Smalls authored state legislation providing for South Carolina
to have the first free and compulsory public school system in
the United States. He founded the Republican Party of South
Carolina. Due to the state's white Democrats disfranchising
most blacks (who made up much of the Republican Party),
Smalls was the last Republican to represent South Carolina's
5th congressional district until 2010.

Elizabeth Freeman https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Freeman
Elizabeth Freeman (c.1744—December
28, 1829), also known as Bet or Mum
Bett, was the first black slave to file and
win a freedom suit in Massachusetts. The
Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling, in Freeman's
favor, found slavery to be inconsistent with the 1780
Massachusetts State Constitution. Her suit, Brom and Bett v.
Ashley (1781), was cited in the Massachusetts Supreme
Judicial Court appellate review of Quock Walker's freedom
suit. When the court upheld Walker's freedom under the state's
constitution, the ruling was considered to have implicitly
ended slavery in Massachusetts.
Any time, any time while I was a slave, if one minute's
freedom had been offered to me, and I had been told I must
die at the end of that minute, I would have taken it—just to
stand one minute on God's airth [sic] a free woman— I
would.
— Elizabeth Freeman[1]
Freeman was illiterate and left no written records of her life.
Her early history has been pieced together from the writings of
contemporaries to whom she told her story or who heard it
indirectly, as well as from historical records.[2][3]
Freeman was born into slavery about 1744 at the farm of
Pieter Hogeboom in Claverack, New York, where she was
given the name Bet. When Hogeboom's daughter Hannah
married John Ashley of Sheffield, Massachusetts, Hogeboom
gave Bet, around seven years old, to Hannah and her husband.
Freeman remained with them until 1781, during which time
she had a child, Little Bet. She is said to have married, though
no marriage record has been located. Her husband (name
unknown) is said to have never returned from service in the
American Revolutionary War.[4]
Throughout her life, Bet exhibited a strong spirit and sense of
self. She came into conflict with Hannah Ashley, who was
raised in the strict Dutch culture of the New York colony. In
1780, Bet prevented Hannah from striking a servant girl with a
heated shovel; Elizabeth shielded the girl and received a deep
wound in her arm. As the wound healed, Bet left it uncovered
as evidence of her harsh treatment.[1]
Catharine Maria
Sedgwick quotes Elizabeth saying, "Madam never again laid
her hand on Lizzy [sic]. 'I had a bad arm all winter, but
Madam had the worst of it. I never covered the wound, and
when people said to me, before Madam, "Betty, what ails your
arm?" I only answered - 'ask missis!' Which was the slave and
which was the real misses?"[1]
John Ashley was a Yale-educated lawyer, wealthy landowner,
businessman and leader in the community. His house was the
site of many political discussions and the probable location of
the signing of the Sheffield Resolves, which predated the
Declaration of Independence.
In 1780, Freeman heard the newly ratified Massachusetts
Constitution read at a public gathering in Sheffield, including
the following:[1]
All men are born free and equal, and have certain natural,
essential, and unalienable rights; among which may be
reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and
liberties; that of acquiring, possessing, and protecting
property; in fine, that of seeking and obtaining their safety and
happiness.
— Massachusetts Constitution, Article 1.
Inspired by these words, Bett sought the counsel of Theodore
Sedgwick, a young abolition-minded lawyer, to help her sue
for freedom in court. According to Catherine Sedgwick's
account, she told him, "I heard that paper read yesterday, that
says, all men are created equal, and that every man has a right
to freedom. I'm not a dumb critter; won't the law give me my
freedom?"[1]
After much deliberation Sedgwick accepted her
case, as well as that of Brom, another of Ashley's slaves.

He enlisted the aid of Tapping Reeve, the founder of
Litchfield Law School, one of America's earliest law schools,
located in Litchfield, Connecticut. They were two of the top
lawyers in Massachusetts, and Sedgwick later served as US
Senator. Arthur Zilversmit suggests the attorneys may have
selected these plaintiffs to test the status of slavery under the
new state constitution.[5]
The case of Brom and Bett v. Ashley was heard in August
1781 before the County Court of Common Pleas in Great
Barrington.[6]
Sedgwick and Reeve asserted that the
constitutional provision that "all men are born free and equal"
effectively abolished slavery in the state. When the jury ruled
in Bett's favor, she became the first African-American woman
to be set free under the Massachusetts state constitution.
The jury found that "...Brom & Bett are not, nor were they at
the time of the purchase of the original writ the legal Negro of
the said John Ashley..."[7]
The court assessed damages of
thirty shillings and awarded both plaintiffs compensation for
their labor. Ashley initially appealed the decision, but a month
later dropped his appeal, apparently having decided the court's
ruling on constitutionality of slavery was "final and
binding."[5]
After the ruling, Bett took the name Elizabeth Freeman.
Although Ashley asked her to return to his house and work for
wages, she chose to work in attorney Sedgwick's household.
She worked for his family until 1808 as senior servant and
governess to the Sedgwick children, who called her
"Mumbet." The Sedgwick children included Catharine
Sedgwick, who became a well-known author and wrote an
account of her governess's life. Also working at the Sedgwick
household during much of this time was Agrippa Hull, a free
black man who had served with rebel forces for years during
the Revolutionary War.[8]
From the time Freeman gained her freedom, she became
widely recognized and in demand for her skills as a healer,
midwife and nurse. After the Sedgwick children were grown,
Freeman and her daughter bought and moved into their own
house in Stockbridge.
Freeman's real age was never known, but an estimate on her
tombstone puts her age at about 85. She died in December
1829 and was buried in the Sedgwick family plot in
Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Freeman remains the only non-
Sedgwick buried in the Sedgwick plot. They provided a
tombstone, inscribed as follows:
ELIZABETH FREEMAN, also known by the name of
MUMBET died Dec. 28th 1829. Her supposed age was 85
Years. She was born a slave and remained a slave for nearly
thirty years; She could neither read nor write, yet in her own
sphere she had no superior or equal. She neither wasted time
nor property. She never violated a trust, nor failed to perform a
duty. In every situation of domestic trial, she was the most
efficient helper and the tenderest friend. Good mother,
farewell.[2]

'A Minor/Adult
Ages & Curfews' Submitted by Sis. BJ Israel
In law, a MINOR is a person
under a certain age—usually the age of majority—which
legally demarcates childhood from adulthood. The age of
majority depends upon jurisdiction and application, but is
generally 18. Minor may also be used in contexts unconnected
to the overall age of majority. For example, the drinking age in
the United States is usually 21, and people below this age are
sometimes called minors in the context of alcohol law even if
they are older than 18.[1][2]
The term underage often refers to
those under the age of majority, but may also refer to persons
under a certain age limit, such as the drinking age, smoking
age, age of consent, marriageable age, driving age, voting age,
etc. These age limits are often different from the age of
majority.
The concept of minor is not sharply defined in most
jurisdictions. The ages of criminal responsibility and consent,
the age at which school attendance is no longer obligatory, the
age at which legally binding contracts can be entered into, and
so on, may be different.
In many countries, including Australia, India, Philippines,
Brazil, Croatia, and Colombia, a minor is defined as a person
under the age of 18. In the United States, where the age of
majority is set by the individual states, minor usually refers to
someone under the age of 18, but can in some states be used in
certain areas (such as casino gambling, handgun ownership
and the consuming of alcohol) to define someone under the
age of 21. In the criminal justice system in some places,
"minor" is not entirely consistent, as a minor may be tried and
punished for a crime either as a "juvenile" or, usually only for
"extremely serious crimes" such as murder, as an "adult".[3]
In Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, a minor is a person under 20
years of age. In New Zealand law, the age of majority is 20
years of age as well,[4]
but most of the rights of adulthood are
assumed at lower ages: for example, entering into contracts
and having a will are legally possible at age 15.[5]
______________________________________
The AGE OF MAJORITY (ADULT) is the threshold of
adulthood as recognized or declared in law. It is the moment
when minors cease to be considered children and assume legal
control over their persons, actions, and decisions, thus
terminating the control and legal responsibilities of their
parents or guardian over them.
The Israel of God Newsletter
The Israel of God Bible Study Class 520 W. 138th Street, Riverdale, IL. 60827 - PH: 708-392-1320 - Email: [email protected] 6
Most countries set majority at 18. The word majority here
refers to having greater years and being of full age as opposed
to minority, the state of being a minor. The law in a given
jurisdiction may not actually use the term "age of majority".
The term typically refers to a collection of laws bestowing the
status of adulthood. The age of majority does not necessarily
correspond to the mental or physical maturity of an individual.
Age of majority should not be confused with the age of sexual
consent, marriageable age, school leaving age, drinking age,
driving age, voting age, smoking age, etc., which each may be
independent of, and sometimes set at a different age from the
age of majority.
Although a person may attain the age of majority in a
particular jurisdiction, they may still be subject to age-based
restrictions regarding matters such as the right to vote or stand
for elective office, act as a judge, and many others.
Religion - In the Bible, age 20 is the point at which people
were considered fully responsible for their actions, able to join
the military, had to pay taxes, etc.[88]
In the Roman Catholic
Church, the age of majority is 18 years.[89]
Age of Consent - The AGE OF CONSENT is the age at
which a person is considered to be legally competent to
consent to sexual intercourse and is thus the minimum age of a
person with whom another person is legally permitted to
engage in sexual activity.
Map of the World Showing Ages of Consent http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ef/Age_of_Consent.png
We know that people are not suppose to be engaging in
sexual activity without the benefit of marriage and we also
know that people will ignore this law and do it anyway.
Please read the Bible and guard against evil.

'FOOD SAFETY' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_safety
Submitted by Sis. B Jordan
Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling,
preparation, and storage of food in ways that prevent
foodborne illness. This includes a number of routines that
should be followed to avoid potentially severe health hazards.
In this way food safety often overlaps with food defense to
prevent harm to consumers. The tracks within this line of
thought are safety between industry and the market and then

between the market and the consumer. In considering industry
to market practices, food safety considerations include the
origins of food including the practices relating to food
labeling, food hygiene, food additives and pesticide residues,
as well as policies on biotechnology and food and guidelines
for the management of governmental import and export
inspection and certification systems for foods. In considering
market to consumer practices, the usual thought is that food
ought to be safe in the market and the concern is safe delivery
and preparation of the food for the consumer.
Food can transmit disease from person to person as well as
serve as a growth medium for bacteria that can cause food
poisoning. In developed countries there are intricate standards
for food preparation, whereas in lesser developed countries the
main issue is simply the availability of adequate safe water,
which is usually a critical item.[1]
In theory, food poisoning is
100% preventable. The five key principles of food hygiene,
according to WHO, are:[2]
1. Prevent contaminating food with pathogens spreading
from people, pets, and pests.
2. Separate raw and cooked foods to prevent
contaminating the cooked foods.
3. Cook foods for the appropriate length of time and at
the appropriate temperature to kill pathogens.
4. Store food at the proper temperature.
5. Do use safe water and safe raw materials.

Some foods are toxic and may even cause death if eaten:
Ackee fruit (unripe can lead to death)
Almonds are actually seeds and if bitter or raw are
full of cyanide. They must be heated to remove the
toxins.
Apples and stone fruits (apricots, cherries, peaches,
pears and plums contain amygdalin, a compound that
produces cyanide. Large doses can lead to dizziness
and vomiting, increased blood pressure, kidney
failure, coma, and even death.
Eggs (uncooked or undercooked)
Elderberry stems and leaves
Meats (raw or undercooked)
Potatoes (poisonous stems and leaves) - Most potato-
related deaths come from eating green potatoes or
drinking potato leaf tea. Never eat potatoes that have
sprouted (have eyes on them).

NEXT BAPTISM…
The next Baptism will be on January 14, 2017.
If you are interested in being baptized, please
see Brother Cornell to have your name placed
on the list. All Baptisms are performed after
class. 14 People were baptized on 11/26/16.
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you
in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38
Psalms 118:18-24
The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death. 19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD: 20 This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter. 21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. 22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of
the corner. 23 This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. 24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Praise the name of JESUS!

"I CRY"
“And God shall wipe away all tears from
their eyes; and there shall be no more
death, neither sorrows, nor crying, neither
shall there be any more pain: for the
former things are passed away.” -

While watching television one day I was suddenly
overwhelmed with grief. Tears streamed down my face but I
didn’t utter a sound. I turned the television off. My heart
couldn’t take it anymore. I didn’t really understand it these
tears of sorrow for people I didn’t even know.
Tears of sorrow, tears of pain, tears of joy they all look the
same. Tear drops are flowing from my eyes to my checks.
They have no name until my heart speaks. It speaks of my
sorrow for the people in the news those who lost their homes
in tornado's, their lives in fires and floods. Rapes, murders and
drive-by shootings; children killing children, it’s insane – it’s
crazy this world we live in. I didn’t know any of those people
yet my heart felt their pain and suffering just the same.
I cry for abused children and those molested every
day.
I cry for the homeless who have no place to stay.
I cry for those who have run out of tears.
I cry for those who will never cry again.
The tears flow even faster. I grab a tissue my nose began to
run. My heart beats faster and faster. I feel unbearable pain
and sorrow. There’s death in the family disaster just struck
home. I cry a river my eyes turn red. They swell up they’re
puffy. I can’t see anything. I cry out loud. Dear Lord this pain
is driving me insane. I can’t take it anymore. Stop the pain –
stop the pain.
When I focus on the Lord I realize my loved ones aren’t
suffering anymore. I know this pain won’t last forever. Lord I
am eternally grateful for that precious time we spent together.
Although their presence will be missed they can never die as
long as I exist. They will live on safely tucked away in my
heart. It’s full of memories I will cherish for the rest of my
life. I shed one last tear but this time its tears of joy I feel.
I cry tears of joy when I think of the Lord. It’s hard to explain
but if you love the Lord you know exactly what I mean.
There’s a smile on my face as the tears roll down my cheeks I
can barely speak. This lump in my throat almost choked me.
When I think of all the blessings you have brought my way I
know they came from you Lord, that’s why I give thanks
every single day. In times of trouble you made a way – out of
no way. When I didn’t know what to do I prayed and prayed.
Suddenly things began to change; it was all because of you.
Things happen for reasons I can't explain but Lord who am I
to question you the Almighty Creator of man-kind? Your
thoughts are higher than my thoughts. You know the end from
the very beginning of all who walk this earth. I only know you
have a master plan for every child, woman and man.
When things happen in Gods almighty wisdom he might be
trying to get our attention. Whatever the reason I know the
Lord will always be there. With prayer and faith I can survive
anything life throws my way.
So whatever tears I cry, be it sorrow, pain or joy. I know I can
weather any storm as long as I am obedient to the Lord. The
Lord heard my cry. He promised never leave me. I am never
alone when I cry out loud in the name of JESUS.
“As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save
me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and
cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.”
