During a recent Process Safety incident when a mechanical seal failure on GCU feed pump P774 resulted in a heavy sour naphtha leak and release of H2S to the atmosphere, immediate emergency action taken by Abdul Nabi - GCU Head Operator, and Adel Shaiji - Area Outside Operator, supported by “B” shift crew, prevented the incident from escalating.Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a colorless, flammable, extremely

hazardous gas and exposure to high concentrations can quickly lead to death. The Company has procedures in place to ensure H2S awareness and training of all personnel and contractors during normal and emergency conditions.B shift crew isolated the pump suction line by closing the isolation valve located 75 feet away from the leaking pump while Abdul Nabi and Adel isolated the leaking pump by switching it off from a local switch and closing the isolation valves in the vicinity of the pump.Despite the hazardous and difficult conditions presented by the leaking naphtha spray and the high level of H2S at the location of the leak, the immediate first line response taken by Abdul Nabi and Adel in quickly donning Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) before entering the area, ensuring it was evacuated of all personnel and successfully isolating the leak, was instrumental in securing the unit in a safe and controlled manner with minimum asset damage and no injury to personnel. It is worthy of note that this diligent

and professional action taken by Abdul Nabi and Adel was carried out in fully compliance with OSOOL Bapco and the 4 Keys to Safety. Although all our staff go through extensive training and drills to prepare for such events, it is only when a real emergency occurs that we find out how good the training has been and how our employees will react. In this particular case, both Abdul Nabi and Adel performed to the highest degree of excellence. The good and timely secondary response provided by the unit crew and emergency response team from Security and Health, Safety and Environment also reflected the many hours of training that have been invested by each member in preparing for such emergency event. Bapco’s General Manager - Refining, Hafedh Al-Qassab, met with Abdul Nabi and Adel and expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude for their action. He stated that, “It is because of the attitude shown by employees like Abdul Nabi, Adel and “B” Shift Crew that we are able to make progress on our journey to achieve the highest level of Operational Excellence.”

Most accidents happen

because people don’t think

or because they don’t look

before they act. Sometimes

they think that the job is

routine, like getting a text

message while walking

along, opening it and

answering it; simple! They

have done it a hundred

times – no problem. This

time, however, they take

their eyes off the ground; trip, correct themselves and

carry on. Others, at work, in the mall, in the park, they

all act the same. Hundreds of people every day walk and

text or chat aimlessly on their mobile and occasionally,

someone trips and corrects themselves – what’s the

problem? The problem is when someone trips and doesn’t

correct the fall and breaks their mobile or fractures their

wrist/ankle – again they recover so no major problem.

The major problem is when someone (you) trips and the result

is an incurable injury or death. In Bapco, we try to encourage

the entire workforce to work safer, to think about the job in

hand, being in work or at home. BOOST observations help

you observe unsafe acts and correct them, so hopefully if

you’re willing to consider the observation comment(s), you

and others will be safer.

Always keep your eyes on your path and hold the hand rails

whenever you use the stairs!

Market Highlights:1. Saudi Aramco raised its Official selling Prices (OSPs) for August-loading barrels of Super Light and Extra Light while making cuts of 10, 30 and 40 cents per barrel respectively for its Light, Medium and Heavy grades. Overall, OSPs in Asia remain at a historically low level which could bode well for sales in a crude market which appears tighter than at any point in recent months. 2. FGE in its latest issue of Chairman’s Corner released last week, sees oil prices will bounce around US$60-80/bbl through 2020. Through end 2016, FGE expect to see prices occasionally dip below this range, with the risks are to the downside, not the upside.3. For the first time since 1999-2000, Kuwait has posted an “actual” budget deficit. The KD2.31bn ($8.0bn) deficit for fiscal year 2014-15 after transfers to state reserves is almost entirely due to the $22/bbl fall to $81/bbl in the average price Kuwait received for its crude exports. 4. Saudi-based Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (Apicorp) has announced the establishment of a US$3bn sukuk programme and is looking to issue its first sukuk by the end of this year, as part of the programme. According to an Apicorp statement, Standard Chartered is acting as the sole arranger. Apicorp’s chairman said that the programme will enable Apicorp to extend attractive financing terms to its clients and partners alike, and enhance Apicorp’s ability to participate in financing some energy-related projects which may not otherwise attract the commercial banks.5. Saudi Basic Industries (Sabic) declared that it has inked a joint-venture (JV) deal with Korean petrochemical manufacturer SK Global Chemical to produce polyethylene products. As per the deal, both the companies will spend $640 million to buy Nexlene technology and will build a plant to manufacture various high-performance ethylene / alpha-olefin copolymer products in Ulsan, South Korea. The facility will produce 230,000 tonnes of products a year and is set to be owned by Korea Nexlene (KNC), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the JV holding company Sabic SK Nexlene (SSNC), which will be headquartered in Singapore.6. Rosneft; the top Russian oil producer; and the Indian Essar Oil have signed a non-binding term sheet for Rosneft to buy an equity stake of up to 49% in Essar Oil (which controls the Vadinar oil refinery, India’s third largest), the Indian company said in a statement last Thursday. The latest proposal to purchase a stake in Essar is conditional upon due diligence, determination of the transaction price, execution of definitive transaction documents and receipt of requisite approvals, the Indian refiner said.A source close to the matter said the entire process, including due diligence, will take at least two to three months.Rosneft also signed a deal to supply the refinery with 200,000 barrels per day for the next 10 years. The deal is consistent with Rosneft’s goal to send 40% of its oil exports to Asian markets by 2019, up from about a third now.7. Myanmar is seeking joint-venture partners to import, store, distribute and sell oil products in the Southeast Asian country, according to a tender document (closes on October 20) seen by Reuters last week.

The Myanmar Petroleum Products Enterprise (MPPE) operates storage facilities and is in charge of retail and wholesale distribution of petroleum products under Myanmar’s Ministry of Energy. The new joint-venture company will be required to expand the business and rehabilitate existing facilities. MPPE will hold 51% of equity while the foreign company will hold the rest. The joint venture will be for a maximum of 30 years after which it could be extendable by two 10-year periods.8. Renewable and Alternative Energies:Oman is pushing two very different solar projects as it searches for alternatives to burning gas, whose domestic output is likely to peak in the medium term:a . State-led Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and US-based GlassPoint Solar will build the Miraah solar thermal plant to improve recovery of heavy and viscous crude from Amal oil field. The plant will deliver 1.02GW of thermal power – no electricity is produced – in the form of 6,000 tons/day (6,000 m3/d) of steam.b . Oman’s Authority for Electricity Regulation (AER) meanwhile has issued the country’s first license for solar photovoltaic (PV) pilot plant at Mazyunah, which AER sees as a means of assessing the feasibility of commercial deployment of PV technology and gauging the challenges of larger projects using similar technology. The license will enable a joint venture of Oman’s Bahwan Engineering and US firm Astonfield to sell electricity to state firm Rural Areas Electricity Company (Raeco) for two years.

What is the best way to keep my child safe around swimming pools? An adult should actively watch children at all times while they are in a pool. For infants and toddlers, an adult should be in the water and within arm’s reach, providing “touch supervision.”

For older children, an adult should be paying constant attention and free from distractions, like talking on the phone, socializing, tending household chores, or drinking alcohol. The supervising adult must know how to swim.

Pool Rules If you have a pool, insist that the following rules are followed: • Keep toys away from the pool when the pool is not in use. • Empty blow-up pools after each use. • No tricycles or other riding toys at poolside. • No electrical appliances near the pool. • No diving in a pool that is not deep enough. • No running on the pool deck.• Use non-slip materials on the pool deck, diving board and ladders.• The steps of the pool ladder should be at least three inches wide, and the ladder should have handrails on both sides small enough for a child to grasp. There should be a ladder at both ends of the pool.• Electrical equipment should be installed by a licensed electrician • Check with a professional pool contractor to be sure the depth is sufficient for a diving board or slide. Always put a slide in a deep area of the pool-- never in shallow water.• There should be a fence at least six feet high around all sides of the pool with a locked gate to keep children out when there is no supervision and the fence should be constructed so it is difficult to climb.

Lawn furniture, trees and shrubs should not be close enough to provide an easy boost over the fence. Avoid using a side of the house as part of the fence; toddlers have wandered out through an open patio door or window and drowned.• Mark water depths conspicuously. Use a safety float line where the bottom slope deepens.• Above-ground pools: Install sturdy guard rails around the pool deck. Look for rolled rims on the metal shell to be sure the rims do not present a sharp cutting edge if someone falls. The access ladder to the deck should be sturdy and without protruding bolts or other sharp edges. The access ladder should swing up to prevent children from unauthorized entry or should be easily removable for secure storage away from the pool area.

• Check the pool and equipment periodically for cleanliness and good maintenance. Cover all sharp edges and protruding bolts; repair rickety or broken ladders and railings. Replace non-slip materials when they wear out.• Teach children to float or swim as soon as possible.• Always provide competent adult supervision when the pool is in use.• No one should ever swim alone.• Caution children against showing off and playing rough and explain the dangers of running and diving recklessly.• Never push others into the pool.• When using water slides, always go feet first.• Before diving or sliding, check to be sure that other swimmers are out of the way.• Keep rescue devices and first aid supplies near the pool.

•Teach children what to do in case of emergency. An alarm bell that could

summon help would be a good idea.• Keep electrical appliances such

as radios out of the pool area because of the hazard of electrical shock.• Never swim after drinking alcoholic beverages, eating or taking medications.

Pool Safety Tips for PetsThere are some basics rules you can follow to prevent tragedy when pets are around the family pool. First, your pet should always be taught where the steps in the pool are located, in case he falls in or gets in trouble while swimming. Even pets that are experienced swimmers can sometimes panic if they accidentally fall in the swimming pool. Pets that are too small to use steps should not be allowed in the pool. Here are some other helpful strategies for keeping your pet safe:• A fence should be installed around the pool.• Install a pet-safe ladder in the pool so your pet has easy exit access.• Pets should not be allowed around the pool without supervision.• Pool covers are NOT a form of protection. Covers can be deceptive to pets, as they look like a solid surface but can give out and lead to a tragedy.• Familiarize your pet with water at a young age; don’t assume he can swim.• Consider purchasing a pool alarm system. These float in the pool and go off when there is a disturbance in the water.• Take your pet to the veterinarian immediately if a near-drowning or water injury occurs.

Saturday, August 1, 2015 Saturday, August 1, 201516 17Oil & Gas NewsFarnek Biogas Initiative Goes Live to Help

Families in NepalDAIKIN Completes the Transition towards One

Brand, “DAIKIN” Brand

Tendeka Expands in China with Exclusive AICD Agreement

UAE-based Farnek, the region’s leading total facilities management (FM) company has unveiled the latest initiative under its 2015 social engagement and corporate social responsibility strategy, with the installation of its first biogas plants in rural Nepal.Working with its long-term sustainability partner, myclimate, the Switzerland-based non profit climate protection foundation, the biogas initiative idea was first mooted in September 2014 with Farnek looking at ways to support the families of its multicultural workforce - many of whom come from developing nations - as part of its drive to become a recognised leader in sustainability.“Over 19% of our employees are Nepalese, and with these isolated rural communities in the country facing ongoing challenges in terms of access to clean, affordable energy, this was a great opportunity for us to contribute towards improving living standards for the families of our team members and advance the sustainability agenda in Nepal at a vital community level,” said Markus Oberlin, CEO, Farnek.Biogas plants provide a mainstream renewable energy solution allowing people to produce methane by fermenting animal waste. The construction of the plant is very simple. A pit is dug close to the house, within which an enclosed dome-shaped digester is built underground out of clay and bricks, which is then covered by soil. There is an inlet for cow dung (which is mixed with water) and other organic waste and liquids, which decay producing methane. An outlet pipe, then carries the methane gas direct to the kitchen for cooking and lighting. Even the slurry of the remaining manure serves as a high quality fertilizer replacing chemicals and it can also be sold on to other farmers. The dung from two or three cows each day produces enough methane gas for five hours of cooking or lighting. Each biogas plant saves the equivalent of five tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year for up to 20 years, thus contributing to reducing the impact of fossil fuel usage. Sandrine Le Biavant, Director Consultancy, who heads-up all of Farnek’s sustainability programmes said: “We currently have the pilot projects in place and are keen to widen the initiative to other areas of Nepal, as well as potentially to other countries with similar needs, such as India.“It’s also a great educational tool as it demonstrates sustainability in action and

creates awareness amongst all our employees, about carbon offsetting and the value-add of implementing renewable energies for the future,” she added.Le Biavant confirms that Farnek is also using the initiative as a tangible example of successful sustainability programmes with the aim of getting other UAE-based companies involved in the project, and thus extending its reach to more families across Nepal and boosting the carbon offsetting potential. The benefits of the Farnek-sponsored biogas units include access to a cleaner and safer source of energy, enabling rural families to produce their own electricity, heat and fertilizer. Also according to the WWF, due to their reduced workload, families can save up to 2.17 hours per day.Health benefits are also there with a reduction in medical issues due to the inhalation of the carbon dioxide from firewood using for cooking and heat. It also provides a new source of income from the sale of the fertiliser to other potential biogas plants. Farnek’s Camp Boss and coordinator in Nepal, Bhumidatta Agasti, visited the families for a week and returned with very practical feedback. “When the women found out that they could create cooking gas from cow dung they were very happy. Now they have a smoke free kitchen and they don’t have to venture into the jungle to collect 20 kilos of firewood a day. They are the envy of their neighbours and as such, they are creating further demand for renewable energy.” The impact of aggressive deforestation due to traditional reliance on fossil fuels is also reduced to a corresponding figure of 1.8% per year with a long-term forecasted drop of up to 50% over the next three decades.“Our fledgling efforts have, to date, been positively welcomed by the local communities, and have also been recently recognised at the annual FM Awards in Dubai, where Farnek’s biogas project was awarded ‘CSR Initiative of the Year’,” added Le Biavant.Following the devastating earthquake in Nepal in late April, Farnek also put in place a support system for employees who had lost close family members and/or had their homes damaged or destroyed and many employees also voluntarily donated money to their Nepalese colleagues to help the relief effort, which amount was doubled by Farnek as extra financial support.

Since the acquisition of McQuay International in 2006, Daikin had integrated many of its attributes and innovations that had positioned McQuay as a Leader among HVAC applied equipment manufacturers.“We are pleased to announce that as of April 1st, 2015, we completed the transition and started using the Daikin brand for all our products and services,” said Mr. Michel Farah, Product Planning Director at Daikin Middle East and Africa. “This represents a single source for all air conditioning product ranges for residential, commercial and industrial applications. We will continue developing industry leading Innovative and energy efficient systems

with the highest level of comfort and sustainability designed to meet customer and regulatory requirements,” he added.“At the same time we will continue to provide aftermarket service and parts for all of our McQuay installed products,” added Mr. Sanjeev Maheshwari, Director of after-sales service at Daikin Middle East and Africa. As a part of the transition, Daikin changed the legal company name from “Daikin McQuay Middle East FZE” to “Daikin Middle East and Africa FZE,” effective as of July 2nd, 2015.“This is a very exciting and important change for our company. Completing the transition of our brand in this region will help us achieve our goals with continuous focus on investments in talent, technology and creating long term relationships with our customers,” said Mr. Yuji Miyata, Chairman of Daikin Middle East and Africa.

THE MIRACLE OF PETROLEUM JELLY Jamie SIGH 8089 Ingredients(Rice)

• 200ml rice wine vinegar

• 4 tbsp. sugar

• 4 tsp. salt

• 750g sushi rice

(Sushi & Maki rolls)• fish (tuna, salmon, white

fish)

• raw king prawns (with shell)

• 2 tbsp. sake

• wasabi paste

• seaweed

• cucumber

• avocado

MethodFirstly, make/buy your Sushi

vinegar, and set aside.

1. Wash the rice thrice, then drain

and leave to stand for 15 minutes.

Bring 1 litre of cold water to a boil

and add seaweed and rice. Simmer

with the lid on for ten minutes, then

leave to stand without taking the lid

off for another 20 minutes.

2. Tip into a large wooden bowl,

sprinkle on the sushi vinegar and

cut through into the rice with a

slicing motion with a wooden

spatula.

3. Fan to cool, with a wooden

paddle (or an old tablemat), for ten

minutes. Turn the rice over, fan for

two minutes. Repeat this four times

and the rice should be at room

temperature and just sticky enough.

4. Use the rice immediately as it is

past its best after a few hours.

5. For the Nigiri sushi, cut your

chosen fish carefully into strips.

Always try to get sushi-grade fish,

and always use top-notch fresh

fish - some sushi fish has been

deliberately frozen to kill any

bacteria.

6. Take the prawns, peel them

leaving the tails intact and butterfly

them carefully taking the dark strip

out from underneath. Impale them

on a skewer lengthways to take out

the bend.

7. Place 500ml of water in a pan

with the sake and bring to the

boil. Simmer the prawns until

pink - this should take about two

minutes. Leave to cool and remove

the skewer. You will have straight

prawns which will be easy to place

on the rice.

8. Take a ball of rice about the size

of a walnut, roll it in your hands

to polish the outside, but don’t

compress the rice too much.

9. Place a dot of wasabi on the top.

Place a prawn or a fish strip onto

this. Press into place with a tapping

motion between your thumb and

middle finger. Repeat to use up as

much of the fish as you wish to turn

into Nigiri.

10. For the Maki rolls, take a

bamboo-rolling mat, cover it

liberally with cling film. Take a half

sheet of Nori seaweed. (The ones

made with half a sheet are smaller

and have more filling to the rice

ratio, and are a better eat.)

11. Cover with rice all over except

for the edge facing you, where you

need to leave an empty border of

about ¾ inch. - this will give you a

join. Press the rice down firmly but

gently to give you a thin but even

coating. Down the middle, line up

your strips of filling – choose from

salmon, cucumber, avocado and

wasabi. Roll the mat away from

you, catching the filling into the

roll. Firm up with the mat.

12. Unroll and using a knife with

a damp blade cut into bite-sized

pieces.

13. Serve the Nigiri and Maki rolls

with pickled ginger, wasabi and

soy sauce.

Memorable Moments

The widely-anticipated Ashes 2015 cricket series between Australia and England kicked off on 8 July 2015. A best-of-five test contest, the series is evenly poised after England drew first blood with a comprehensive 169-run conquest of Michael Clarke and company, before Australia recovered quickly to dish out a sound thrashing to Alastair Cook’s men with a 405-run victory at the prestigious Lord’s cricket ground in only four days of play.Standout performances so far have included top-scoring Steven Smith’s double-hundred during the second test, with the young Sydney batsman once again proving to be a key pillar of the Australian batting order. Englishman

Joe Root struck 134 at Cardiff as young guns from both sides once again proved that they are here to stay, while 37-year old Aussie opener Chris Rogers defied age to strike a masterful 173. For the bowlers, Josh Hazlewood leads the standings with a tally of 10 wickets to this name, while England’s Stuart Broad, spinner Nathan Lyon and 6’6” World Cup sensation Mitchell Starc follow closely with 9 wickets apiece. With games scheduled at Edgbaston, Nottingham and The Oval over the remainder of the summer, you can bet that both sides will be hungry for much more than prestige, renewing their rivalry on the turf with everything to play for.

The 2015 Wimbledon Championships came to a close on Sunday, 12 July 2015 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, with Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic being crowned champion for a second successive year after a 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Swiss great Roger Federer. Djokovic was at his unbeatable best and stretched his Grand Slam tally further to an impressive 9 slams after being shocked in Paris for the title by Swiss powerhouse Stan Wawrinka. Runner-up for the second straight year at nearly 34 years of age, Federer continues to be the all-time leader with a masterful total of 17 Grand Slams. On the women’s side, Serena Williams of the United States continued her thorough

dominance across all surfaces in 2015, picking up her third straight Slam of the year with a 6-4, 6-4 score line over Spanish upstart Garbine Muguruza in the final. Williams had to hold off inspired performances by local youngster Heather Watson and then dangerous Belarusian Victoria Azarenka earlier on in the tournament. The younger Williams will undoubtedly be gunning for a Calendar Slam when the US Open kicks off in New York on August 31. In Doubles competition, first-time champs Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau picked up the Men’s title, while in the Ladies’ Doubles it was Swiss Martina Hingis and India’s world number one Sania Mirza who won a three-set contest.
